A Section Reviewby Ross Booth

Congratulations University Blues! Your defeat of Old Xaverians by 1 point has breathed new life into therelegation battle at the bottom of the ladder . It is now possible (and indeed always was) for either Collegians

or Caulfield Grammarians to drop to B Section along with Bul!een-Temp!estowe .With two matches to go Blues are one game behind Collegians and Caulfield Grammarians but have the

edge in percentage .This week's clash at Albert Park between Caulfield and Blues is all important . Blues must win this, whilst

Collegians faces a tough task against North Old Boys at Harry Trott .If Blues were to defeat Caulfield and Collegians lost to North then the three clubs would go into the last round

locked togeher on 24 points .The final found relegation matches are :

University Blues v North O .B .Caulfield Grammarians v De La Salle .Old Xaverians v Collegian s

So, it could go right down to the wire !The Blues hit the post four times in their match, so they might have been unlucky to lose . One former senior

official thought that Xavs were lucky not to lose by six goals . Mike Yandell returned to top form and their twoU19s, CHF Chris Holmes and centreman Eddie Banks contributed greatly . Danny Corcoran won't be pleasedbut now he has the justification to rip into the Xavs . Are Ormond restored as flag favourites ?

North Old Boys finals chances were ended when they lost by 17 points to De La Salle . It was an evenfirst half but 1 .10 by North in the third quarter put them behind by 13 points at the last break .

Tim Cooke was brilliant in that third quarter for De La, Peter Rennie was dangerous on the forward lineand managed 6 goals . North kicked the first 3 goals of the last quarter and hit the front and appeared capableof going right on with it . But De La were steadier and got the next four goals . It was a good win by DLS whohave rarely won at Brens Oval since the beginning of their "modern era" in 1975 . Jerome Griffin was solidat full back, but when have you known him not to be .

Ormond trounced Caulfield Grammarians by 112 points . The 'Monds were rebounding after last week'sloss to Old Xaverians and showed no mercy as they piled on 11 goals in a grand last quarter performance .Ormond scored 18 of their 22 goals at the clubhouse end . Why? There was no wind, the ground conditionswere similar at both ends . Perhaps, Ormond likes kicking to the clubhouse end . Mark McDonald was backto his best at CHF with 8 goals and rover Joe Young kicked 5 .

It rained for more than half of the Old Paradians - Bulleen-Templestowe match in the northern suburbof Bundoora and the score reflected the conditions - 6 .12 to 3 .8 with Old Paradians the victors by 22 points .The ground was a quagmire . Neither side scored a goal in the last quarter and indeed Bulleen didn't kick oneafter half-time. Nice to see Paul Fahey back in the pivot and getting kicks for OP's . And where would Bulleen-Templestowe be without the consistent Harry Harison, Scott Wotherspoon & Paul Bell? The answer to thisunhappily phased question is still on the bottom but with a poorer percentage .

Old Scotch kept their faint final four hopes alive with a 22 point win over Collegians at Elsternwick Park,Collegians led by 2 points at half time but their Captain, Centreman Stuart Hinchen failed to reappear afte r

Brian Irwin plays his 50th game for Kew today .Even though Brian first signed with Kew in 1979 forthe U.19's he has had stints at Templestowe and NorthKew which have restricted a high game tally. "B.J ."is now back with the Kew boys and showing his ver-satility by playing wing and centre half forward . Healso gives a helping hand on the Social Committee.Congratulations and good luck today to Brian fromall at Kew .

"SAUSAGE" & "KINGO" - VETERAN OR"VINTAGE"?

Two of Old Hai!eyburians' gentlemen ploddershave been in the milestones over the last fortnight .First it was Richard Kingston who played his long-awaited hundredth game out at Kew last week ; todayit's the mighty "Sausage", Steve Marshall, playinghis 150th against the Rovers at the season's last gasp .

"Kingo" joined us way back when (1978), as dep-puty vice-captain of the club's first-ever under nineteenteam . This invincible combination stormed on to winthe flag at first attempt, the illustrious Herr Marsha! lfeaturing at the celebrations with the dead horse - butthat's another story, nay legend . For his part, Kingokept the abominable green-man less than quiet in thebig game, playing that tight game from full-back whichhas become his trademark . This is despite forays ontothe forward line which have been noted for their en-thusiasm rather than their frequency or success .

Actually it was some time before the Kolt from Keys-borough netted his first major. From memory "J .R ."will tell you it was around 1 .35 p.m . on Saturday 21July, on Old Camberwell's Barnard Reserve. Sincethen his tally stands at just 2 .

It must also be remembered that our engineeringdefender has international coaching experience too,as the sole red-head in a team of Bouganville natives- his team photo also has him as just about the onlyplayer wearing boot! Since his return we still haven'tbeen able to work out just what he is most attachedto - that Sherlock Holmes pipe (someone shouldgive him a deerstalker next Christmas) or the lovelyHills .

Well it's been a long time coming Kingo - someof us never thought we'd see the day after the thirstfor goals had a near-disastrous result out at Elstern-wick Park three years ago . How much courage thereturn to arms took, most of us will never know . Nodoubt the Kingston love of yarning until late hours withbeer in hand will tell the story one day !

Having left the litigation boys with surprisingly littleto work on in the words of wisdom above, it is nowtime to turn to a colleague in libel and defamation .

the writer of "Punchlines", an Editor's nightmare"Shagger's Gallery" cartoonist, Richmond SocialClub DJ - extraordinaire, and walking advertisementfor Bolle and Berocca - Stevie "Ray" Marshall.

"Sausage" joined the Bloods in 1977, quite a yearwhen one considers that his well-known extrovertstablemate and friendly rival Geoff "Evil" Sincockalso made his presence felt for the first time. Over theyears these two have created as much mirth aroundthe club as Zig and Zag, not the least for "Stinks"classic water displacement contest . Also well remem-bered around the traps were the infamous Jim Beam-soaked "New York Tapes", since confiscated by theFederal Polize.

We'd best not forget Steve's footballing exploits be-fore returning to the gutter. Well over a hundred of hisgames have been in the club's premier side, mainlyas a solid but nimble back pocket, rover or flankerwith those clean wicket-keeping hands for surprisingmarks . At one stage he was probably the club's besttagger, although he has rarely been known to "do aBruce Doull' off the field! A sure right foot and morethan useful left have netted around 70 goals for thelong-sleeved number five .

Now well established as the OHAFC's Director ofMuzak, our very own Blues Brother has shaken morethan a few tail feathers with the ever-popular cocktailparty tapes. And who could count the number of fel-low players in mourning the day "Cyclone" Traceyblew away? In recent years he's taken an almost pater-nal interest in his favourite literary target and fellowersatz blonde, the inimitable "Nosk".

One thing can be said about this much loved pair- at least they're improving . Steve won the firsts'Most Improved trophy in 1980, to be followed by Kin-go the following year with a tremendous year ofdefence for perhaps his favourite coach and erstwhileconversationalist, Nick Tonkin .

Top effort boyz!GIBBO'S TON AT THE TECH !

Phil "Gibbo" Gibbs recently notched up his 100thclub game at F.! T. Since heading down from Shep-parton to attend the Institute several years ago, "Gib-bo" has been a regular down at F.I .T. and one of thelast true F.I .T. "old boys". Phil took the drastic stepof getting married this season just so he could missa couple of matches and go over to Fiji with lovelyJoanne to sort out the coup!! "Gibbo" has playedhis share of senior games, but these days prefers tolead by example in the twos where his ability to dropthe over-head mark and miss kick with either foot con-tinues to impress Footscray talent scouts! Well done"Gibbo" hopefully your great on-field service willsoon be capped off with a stint on the committee.

Peter FrenchPreviews today's matche s

Uni Blues came back from the dead last week to beat Old Xavs by a point and have propelled themselvesinto the match of the day against Caulfield Grammarians. I take my hat off to the Blues - it was a fine winwhich sent quite a shiver down the backs of 2 A Section Clubs who border Albert Park Lake! I was not at thegame and wonder, were Xavs over confident or Blues more desperate? I note Mike Yandell was best afieldand completely eclipsed Mark Summers who has had such an outstanding year in Red & Black and Blue &White, and also wonder whether an ordinary game from the Xavs big man means an ordinary game from therest of the side? That theory may be put to the test tomorrow as Old Scotch has Duncan McCall & John Mairin top form and both are eagerly awaiting the challenge of curtailling Summers and knocking off the Xavs .

Ormond's total eclipse of Caulfield Grammarians will have done little for the 'fields confidence and in agame which will virtually decide relegation I lean towards the Blues . I really was surprised with Caulfield's show-ing as they had looked alright recently . Certainly the loss of David Matthews was a real blow but even so HISNAMESAKE Ben, Ian Kyle, Rob Morrissey, Ray Berzins, Campbell Cooney, Trevor Royals, David Gregor,John Kanis, Mark McClelland and Andy Norman are pretty useful and yet those in attendance at the gametell me it was the weakest effort they'd ever seen a Caulfield side put up and that B grade was where they be-long! Both coaches - Peter Chisnall & Alan Salter have plenty of fuel to stir the fire in their respective sidesand the vagaries of Oval 3 will also assist the Caulfield cause . On the other hand Blues have like a numberof sides throughout the Association fallen back on a tried and tested formula . When things are going wrongand you're being beaten regularly give Youth a go and Eddie Banks & Chris Holmes are just two U19's whohave quickly made their presence felt whilst veterans Bernie Angel the Macauley b rothers & Roger Curnowhave been around long enough to realize the value of A Section .

It promises to be a great game especially with so much at stake and whoever wins is bound to celebrateas if it had won the flag! Caulfield has been the most difficult side to select all year and I wouldn't be surprisedat all if they won today. However I favour the University for whom A Section may just mean a little more !

Again we have an excellent round of matches and the result of the De La & Old Paradians game will beclosely awaited in a number of quarters . O .P's will well remember a 75 point drubbing back on June 13th andknowing they're likely to meet the D's again in a fortnight will be anxious to crush their opponents today . DeLa on the other hand must win as Old Scotch could still pinch fourth spot! It's been a good month for De Laas they've answered the challenge of both Old Scotch & No rt h O.B.'s and have in reality put paid to thoseClubs finals hopes . I believe De La can continue on its winning way and defeat the Old Paradians . O.P's formis not the problem but its forward line might be although I'm reliably informed Mike Skerritt found some olddash last week . De La's game relies on Mike G re ene and its running defence and as both are burning I'mconfident De La can win .

Collegians take on North O .B. at Har ry Trott knowing that a win by the Blues could see it right in the hotseat next week. They looked good during the first half last week but the loss of Captain Stuart Hinchen witha "hammy" signalled the end of its desperation apart from a few such as Rob Oliphant, Richard Schober,Nick Chosich, Simon Williams & David HBoylke. Scotch ran all over them in the second half although I'mnot sure thats a key part of the North game . I'm going for North who will be keen to remind the Lions of the1986 Grand Final and an excellent way to avenge that loss would be to put the Lions in a position of relegation .North have had some tough games recently and with the pressure for a finals birth now off No rt h can be ex-pected to play its natural game and will win and win well .

Ormond travel east to play Bulleen-Templestowe who are bound to put up a far better show against theSection leaders than did Caulfield . However Ormond are too well coached and proud to falter at Lower Tem-plestowe and with one or two positions still up for grabs within the side those favoured by selection today willbe anxious to perform and retain a spot in the side selected for the second semi . Of interest to all at Ormondwill be the return of Craig Clark who will have a run in the Reserves today. If he could find touch in the nexttwo weeks he may be a surprise inclusion in the 'monds defence for the game against Old Xavs on Sept . 6t h- I wish him well in his comeback .

4THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 1987

Tomorrow Old Scotch & Old Xavs meet at Elsternwick Park in what will be a good test for Xavs followingcs loss last week .

Can the Xavs rebound from defeat as Ormond did? One things for certain the Cardinals who have nothingto lose will contest the issue all day and have the on ball players in Scott McGill & Steve Spiers to cause theXavs a headache or two. In And rew Smith, Brian Hodge & Steve Reddish who played very well when movedonto Tregear last week they also have a centre line to match the Xavs and the outcome of this clash could welldecide the game . As stated earlier Mark Summers will have his hands full with the most improved DuncanMcCall & Peter Sherwen will trouble either Geoff Greetham or Steve Cu rtain who is tipped to return follow-ing his game in the Reserves last week. I was also impressed with Ed Allen's game against Collegians althoughhe will be well tested by the in-form Xavs defenders either Murray Varcoe or John Cu rtain . Xavs may be luckyto have such a hard game with the finals so close and knowing they were fortunate to win the earlier encounterwill have plenty of respect for the Cardinals. However I feel the Xavs record in 1987 stands by itself and thattheir more settled and lively forward line will kick them to victory .

` B Section too boosts a great round this week as the top 4 clubs are opposed . The coveted double chancewill be decided this afternoon and Therry at home to Parkside may move from fourth to second if they canwin . Theirs was a good performance at Fawkner last week and the tough game will stand them in good stea dfor todays encounter. Parkside won their earlier game at Elsternwick Park on June 13th by an impressive 40points . However Therry has improved since then and today will be too slick for the Devils who need the returnof versatile Frank Sansonetti and rover Darry l Whatmough . Therry are practically at full strength and willhave no excuses if it cannot win at home today despite the return of Mark Sturgess, Tony Pavia & Peter Whitfield.

The other big game is at Bulleen between Marcellin & St . Bernards . Its hard to fault the Eagles lately. They'vehad excellent wins over Therry & Parkside in successive weeks and need only beat the 'Bernards today tocomplete a hat-trick of wins against their fellow premiership contenders. Of interest both sides suffered defeatsagainst the Blacks whom St . Bernards coach Frank Melican rates highly. The game could well be a forerun-nerof the Grand Final and much will hinge on the key battles between respective goal to goal lines . Can StevePsoras hold St . Bernards Paul Hogan and will Mick O'Dea curb Ga ry Petroff? Certainly the clash betweenr val wingers Mark Cooper & Mark Mahady will be a feature of the game as will the ruck battles between TonyPaatsch & John Klaaysen . Marcellin must also closely watch Vin Comito who is in excellent form . Becausethe match is at Marcellin and their recent form has been so impressive I'm going for the Eagles to win andretain the double chance .

Banyule are at home to Fawkner and as both Clubs still have hopes of surviving the season the game isbound to be a tight struggle. Both clubs have had important victories in recent weeks and both realize that OldTrinity is also in a perilous position, and so there is much for which to play . I'm sticking with Fawkner in spiteof its loss last week, I believe they've gradually restored the side to the best they've got and will be too goodfor Banyule today.

Old Trinity who are staring C Section in the face have one last chance at home today, given that Blackswill be too good next week . They meet a very consistent Ivanhoe and will be relying on their pace and homeground advantage to win the game. I believe the 'Hoe would beat them anywhere and will be too strong inthe air and on the ball for Trinity who with Banyule have found the jump to B Section just a bit too much .The remaining game is at the Uni where Blacks will start favourites against St. Kilda . The Saints had agreat win last week following that dismal effort at Fawkner and if they maintain that spirit and if Tony Riddellis again on the job (14 goals last week - what a great performance!) - then the Saints may just hang on andavoid the dreaded relegation .

What a unique situation we've got in C Section . If Thomastown beats Monash Blues who need to win toremain second and if Kew lose to O .M .'s who need to win and take over second, all quite possible, then thesame sides meet again in the first and second semi's next week! I've no doubt that Thomastown will win butplenty about O.M's whose form against the top sides is most questionable . Kew have carried all before themduring the season and will certainly be keen to finish the season on a high note and continue the supremacyit has over O.M's, O.M's are almost back to full strength and hopefully will put up a far better effort that the lasttime these sides met when Kew won by a mammoth 115 points .

However Kew are easily the best side in the Section and will prove it once again this afternoon . As mentionedearlier I'm also of the opinion Thomastown at home will be too strong for Monash & Balaclava will be anxiousto finish with a big win which they'll no doubt achieve against AJAX who have had a dreadful season ,Old Brighton would need to beat Melbourne High by a huge margin and hope that Monash do the sameto Thomastown for it to make a semi-final appearance . Although Old Brighton will go for broke and be unhin-dered in beating the High School, part two of this scenario is unrealistic and so Old Brighton will end the sea-son as the best side out of the four. (they should challenge the Blacks to a game!)

Long standing rivals Old Haileybu ry & Hampton Rovers meet at McKinnon in a local derby. Rovers arebound for D Section next year but have performed well of late, whereas Old Haileybury have been most eraticand face a crucial year in 1988. Neither side has a lot to play for, but the Rovers have more pride and will winthis game today as Old Haileybury look towards more social happenings .

Round 10 against Old Mentone marks the 150thappearance for St . Kevins Old Boys by Richard"Tich" Callanan .

Titch joined the club straight from school back in1978 After a fine initial season, he took some time tosettle down to consistent form and at one stage be-came a permanent fixture at backpocket .

But like a true champion, he has fought back tonearly earn "legend" status . His renowned pace andbeautiful disposal have haunted opposition teams foryears . Whether playing as a rover, flanker or winger, his explosive turn of speed has provided some spec-tacular viewing for SKOB supporters .

Of the field is he definitely a "legend". Hisknowledge of addresses of parties, his attendanceat a club record 318 Twenty-first birthday parties, andhisdetermintion only to go home to change clotheshave made him immensely popular with the rage set .

His stamina in being able to play well after shock-ing Friday Nights has also amazed the pundits . Butabove everything, his best feature has been his loyalty

to the club. Despite repeated offers, he only venturedto A Grade for a short half-season . There he provedhis ability with a senev-goal debut, but returned shortlyafter to help St . Kevins in their bid for that elusive flag.

He's still there helping the club on the field eachSaturday, and hopefully this year his loyalty will berewarded .

Well done Titch .

.vhich these sides will finish . De La Salle lost all final four hope when Marcellin lowered their colours by; four points . Marcellin's victory has strengthened their hold on second place . Old Xaverians annihilate dUniversity Blues by on hundred and thirty five points. This defeat cost the Blues some nineteen percent whichould be vital come Round 18. Inexorably associated with this result was Bulleen Templestowe's defeat ofOld Paradians Green . The Bullant's turned a two point lead at half time into a seventeen point victory as theParadians wilted under pressure . As a result of these two games the Blues and the Bullants are now equalon points and the Bullants closed the percentage gap by a staggering twenty per cent . As a trivial aside both-ams have had twelve hundred points kicked against them!! Collegians proved me a poor tipster when theyefeated M elbourne High School Old Boys by nineteen points. Ormond had the bye .

Page 7: F001° - Victorian Amateur Football Association · Phil "Gibbo" Gibbs recently notched up his 100th club game at F.! T. Since heading down from Shep-parton to attend the Institute

UNDER 19 SECTION 2 (Round 16 )St . Kilda lifted themselves above the dreaded relegation zone with a resounding one hundred and seven pointvictory over Old Melburnians who dropped to second last as a consequence. St . Bernards kicked the sweepand improved their percentage by over eighteen as their final four thrust gained momentum with their annihila-tion of Old Brighton by one hundred and ninety five points. Old Scotch defeated University Blacks by thirtysix points which means that the Blacks continued to hold fourth position by the minute margin of point 53 per-cent from Ban yule . Banyule's three point margin over Thomastown saw them join the Blacks on premiershippoints while Thomastown remained one game outside the four but dropped to seventh because of St. Ber-nard's increased percentage. Leading side Therry had a twenty four point margin over Old Haileybu ry whomust now finish in third place at the conclusion of Round 18 .

UNDER 19 SECTION 3 (Round 16)Williamstown and Ivanhoe played a high scoring game from which Ivanhoe emerged victorious by forty threepoints . With uncanny accuracy Cq ulfield Grammarians built their winning margin over Monash Blues to eightytwo points . Old Paradian's Purple led all day against Hampton Rovers in heavy conditions before runningout winners by twenty three points . Whitefriars had the bye .

PREVIEW OF MATCHES TO BE PLAYED AUGUST 15, 1987 .

D SECTION ( Round 18)North Brunswick travel to Elsternwick and may find the small ground restricts their game . At home I selectElsternwick to end the seson with a win . Old Camberwell travel to Heatherton where the `Wells should recorda comfortable victory in Heatherton's last game in D Section for at least a season . Old Camberwell must hopethat other results will let them return to the final four . The top game of the round will be that between BulleenUnited and Old Ivanhoe. The result of this game will determine which of the clubs will play St . Kevins in nextweek's second semi final . Both sides have reliable veterans controlling their forward lines - Divirgilio of Bulleenand the evergreen Lou Hockins of Old Ivanhoe. There is little between these sides on their 1987 performancesand so the game could go either way . At home and because of their superior defence I select Bulleen United .Old Mentonians await St . Kevins with the knowledge they must win well to contest next week's semi final .St. Kevins, although sadly depleted by injuries, should be able to withstand all Mentonian efforts and thuswin the game. Near neighbours Coburg and Preston meet at the De Cherie Oval for Coburg's farewell toD Section . Preston whose heavy injury list has blunted their final's thrust, will still be talented enough to winthe game .

E SECTION ( Round 18)The West Brunswick versus Brunswick match on the Western Oval Royal Park is a virtual semi final as WestBrunswick must win well to hope to qualify for next week's first semi final while Brunswick have to hope awin to them and a State Bank loss will mean the Red and Whites finish second . The two sides are very evenlymatched on seasonal statistics although their forward thrusts have different patterns - for West McNeice hasproven a key forward whereas Brunswick have relied on team play for goals. Given my sixteen season associa-tion with the Western Oval I know its winds and wide pockets can upset visiting sides - Brunswick playersmust follow Jim,Flower's instructions on ball movements or they will be in trouble . Today I am confident WestBrunswick caniwin and hope for next week . University High School Old Boys should finish their seasonon a high note by comfortably defeating Clayton who seem fated to complete a winless season . St . Bede'sneed to win well against Old Geelong to insure a semi final berth . At home I am in no doubt St . Bede's willtake the points . Old Essendon Grammarians at home should record a comfortable victory over PeninsulaOld Boys who seem F Section bound in 1988. State Bank anxious to insure their double chance should beable to take the points against Powerhouse who have not enjoyed a successful season .

F SECTION ( Round 18 )Williamstown make the long journey to Patterson River to meet St . Leonards. Williamstown should be re-warded with victory. St . Andrews should continue on their winning way and coach Magro should be able tofine tune his players as they go about defeating University Reds today. Old Carey should end the seasonby defeating Commonwealth Bank at Bulleen today. Who do I select in the match between La Trobe Univer-sity and A.N .Z . Bank whose supporters must be stalwarts indeed? At Bundoora I select La Trobe Universityalthough for A .N .Z. Bank every score will be vital as they strive to avoid the ignoming of the wooden spoon .In what promises to be a preview of next week's second semi final Aquinas visit Whitefriars. Whitefriars falteredlast week whereas Aquinas has lost only one match for the season . Today I select Aquinas to emerge victori-ous . Doveton make the long journey west to play Footscray Institute who will strive desperately to avoid thewooden spoon . However Doveton should win the game by a wide margin as they prepare for next week's firstsemi final .G SECTION (Prelimina ry Final )Po rt Colts meet Monash Whites in this cut throat game on the Ross Grego ry Oval . The two sides will presentcontrasting styles of football as they strive for the right to play Bloods next Sunday at Elsternwick Park . Bothsides have kicked comparable totals over the season - Port Colts have relied on McNamara and Sweet whereasMonash have no particularly successful forward . The Monash defence has been the tighter of the two duringthe season and today I fancy the Students will hold Po rt Colts at bay while their younger players will run theball away from Colts defenders . I select Monash Whites .

H SECTION (Prelimina ry Final )Bulleen Templestowe and Old Brighton Grammarians meet to determine the challenge to Eltham in theGrand Final . The Combine players are in top form and in Parris, Weedman and Homborger they possessa trio of leading goal kickers who should convert sufficient opportunities to defeat Old Brighton . I select BuileenTemplestowe.

I

UNDER 19 SECTION 1 (Round 17)The in form Bulleen Templestowe are at home to De La Salle and should win well again . If their near neigh-bours Marcellin can defeat University Blues, Bulleen Templestowe will be a game clear in fourth place go-ing into the final round . I select the neighbours Bulleen Templestowe and Marcellin to win their games andthus make the above scenario become factual . Old Xaverians play Melbourne High School Old Boys in Yar-ra Park where the big ground may test the Melbourne High players fitness. Old Xaverians should record acomfortable victory to take them one game closer to the "champion" label . Ormond are at home to Old Paradi-an's Green and must win well to have any hope of avoiding relegation . On the other hand Neil Mullavey andBill Beadle will be stressing to their charges that victory is imperative if the side hopes to play in a semi final .When judged objectively by the season's statistics Old Paradians should win well . However objectivity is notnecessarily a good selection criteria especially when relegation and finals are likely results!! Collegians havethe bye.UNDER 19 SECTION 2 (Round 17)Old Haileybu ry , safely in the final four should make Old Melburnians safer in the relegation zone when theydefeat the Dark Blues today. St. Kilda forfeited to St . Bernards in the ninth round so there is no previousform on which to judge this game. Both sides scored very impressively last Saturday and for St . Bernards victo-ry could well take them into fourth place . A St . Kilda victory will make them certain members of Section 2 in1988. I believe that as St . Bernards have the greater incentive they will overcome the St . Kilda home groundadvantage and win the game. Old Scotch travel to Old Brighton where they should overcome the sea breezesand comparatively small ground and win the game . A very important match is that between University Blacksand Thomastown because the winner could well play in the first semi final . Vacation time may tell against theBlacks but as their forwards have been the more active and as Thomastown must adjust to the big CrawfordOval I will select University Blacks. Banyule desperate for fourth place are at home to Therry who must befavoured to win . As Ther ry have proved themselves to be best side in the section I believe they will overcomeBanyule today and win the game.UNDER 19 SECTION 3 (Round 17)Old Paradian's Purple will tackle Whitefriars with confidence following last week's victory. Nevertheless I mustselect Whitefriars to win today. Hampton Rovers should provide stern opposition for Monash Blues who whoul dhowever take the points. In a final's preview Ivanhoe are at home to Caulfield Grammarains . It is always difficultfor visiting teams to win at Ivanhoe although today I fancy Caulfield Grammarians will be strong enough towin . Williamstown have the bve .

YCENTURY TO FRED STAFFOR D

One of the finest footballers to play at Power Houseis Fred Stafford and his 100th game against Old Gee-long Grammarians was an outstanding performance, until a recurring hamstring injury forced his from thefield .

Freddie commenced at Power House in 1976 af-ter playing with Carlton Under 19's where he hopedto follow in his father;s footsteps, having played in the1947 Premiership team .

Fred won our Best and Fairest Trophy in 1978 andplayed on the wing in the V.A .F.A . State Team (C, D,E . and F) in 1985 .

It was most unfortunate that he sustained an un-necessary injury later in the 1984 season that kepthim out of the game until this year.

Congratulations Fred and we trust you can beat thehamstring problem for season 1988.

Personality ParsTON UP FOR BULL'S DR . ZIGG I

James Ziogas plays his 100th game for BulleenUnited this week. After joining the club in 1980, Jim-my's power play and accurate disposal, getting theball from under the packs has been a big bonus overthe years .

This year's return of one of the club's "ACO'S" af-ter his study and lecture tours was much welcomedas he has slotted into the vital ruckrover role to setBulleen on the road to the finals. Congratulations Zig-gi and much more success in your football in the`.iture .

THROBBER CRACKS A HUNDREDCongratulations to University Blacks defender IanAlexander on playing his 100th game today against

THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 1987

St . Kilda CBC. Ian commenced with the Blacks in1982 having first played junior football with OldScotch before transferring to La Trobe Uni . Throb-ber, as he is affectionately known, has establishedhimself as a reliable, fiercely competitive backman, the nemesis of opposing forwards. Off the footballfield, Ian will confess to enjoying a taste for the goodlife. A glass of red wine is high on his list of priorities, closely followed by some fine cuisine. Indeed the clubwill bravely open the canteen on Thursday nights andAlex can be seen, along with his soul mate CraigJobson, scoffing into a hot dog or three . Throbbersgreat warmth and good humour makes him a mustfor any footy trip both post and pre-season . Well doneThrobber on this fine achievement and indeed onyour recent engagement to Jane .

VAFA representative teams have enjoyedthe comfort of wool for the last three seasons .

Players like Hampton Rover's DavidRogerson seen here in the new Woolblendmarkjumper for season 1987, and Ormond's PhillipKingston wearing the Woolblendmark jumperworn in the 1986 State Games, enjoy thefeeling of wool every week because the VAFAis one of a growing number of associationswho have made the change toWoolblendmark jumpers .

They've made that changebecause they know that woolprovides maximum comfortwhether players are performingin hot or cold conditions.

And no matter how many times th :machine washed or commercially laund °d,Woolblendmark jumpers stay in shape, seasonafter season .

That's why Woolblendmark has VA_endorsement, because nothing touches woolfor economic performance that just goes onand on .

MILESTONE AT WEST BRUNSWIC KAll at West Brunswick congratulate Darren Ander-

son on playing his 100th game against Powerhouselost week . Ando's milestone has come after a lengthycareer which included a knee operation following in-volvement with the dreaded "Tottenham reaper" -iilat unknown force that has been the curse of manya West Brunswick footballer. Ando is a very skilful rover.vho can thread his way through the pack with con-sumate ease and has an uncanny knack of knowingwhere the goals are which makes him a very handyplayer. Knowing where they are and kicking the ball~iTrough is his only downfall . Ando will be a great as-set to the team in the forthcoming finals and all play-ers and supporters will wait in anticipation for someof Ando's football magic. Well done Ando and let'shope we see you around for many years to come .

Saturday was John Beaumont's 200th game. Ithought I'd put the kiss of death on him as I wroteTHE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 1987

UNIVERSITY BLUESThe under-manned University Blues gave coach

Alan Salter his best ever birthday when they camefrom behind to defeat premiership contenders OldXaverians, the Blues showed a real will to win afterhitting the post four times. The VA .F.A . always a trendsetter in football in introducing the first female umpire, may soon have the first of her sex to coach a seniorteam if Yvonne Salter continues to desert her can-teen duties to urge the Blues to "Pick up your men,Pack the back line" etc. The enthusiasm of all the can-teen ladies prompted on foolhardy "Xavs" support-er, obviously insensed by the degree of support fromthis area, told the girls in no uncertain terms that theywould be better suited to their canteen tasks than sup-porting their beloved Blues. A speedy retreat was allthat saved him from a fate worse than death .
