"WHAT PUZZLES THE SAILOR."

To know if prisoners nrc reallylured out to do the work of honesttradesmen, as we aio cicdibly in-

formed is the case with the paintingon a new building on King street.

To understand how Mr. Pcavcccould "repudiate an agreement"that never passed beyond the stageof negotiations.

To know why the Oceanic Com-

pany could not charter one of the

several inter-islan- d steamers, thatnrc well fit for the service, to takethe place of its defaulting steam-

ship, and why Ihe Governmentshould accept a sailing vessel tocarry the regular mails if a steamercould be obtained by the contractors.

THIS WAY BONNEFIN.

The following is from the FederalAustralasian of Oct. 3rd:

Here's a piece of good news forthe northern sugar-planter- s: "Theeditor of the Queensland Reviewtelegraphs from Brisbane that Mr.Bonnclin, of Paris, reports havingcompleted the discovery of the art ofextracting the juice from the sugar-cane by which he can manufacturewhite sugar in two hours, and placecolonial sugars in Melbourne at 8per ton. The invention destroys thebeet industry, and settles the laborquestion to a great extent. Mr.JJounelin refers to the Society ofArts, 'Paris, lie will visit Australiaif cncouiasrcd." I3v all means lethim be encouraged. Let M. Bonnc-lin come. His very name proclaimsfor him that he has none but a goodend (bonne jiii) in view.

THE WAIKIKI FIRE.

The first information received re-garding the lire at Waikiki, whii--

was barely in time for yesterday'sissue of this paper, was incorrect. It was not Mr. Fieeth's house, butan old barn belonging to him, whichwas on lire. That building-- , togetherwiih a barn, a cottage and a wood-shed owned by Mr. A. J. Cart-wrigh- t,

weic burned down. Thel"ss to ihc latter gentleman is82,000. covered by insurance. Therewas a ecaicity of water, but a strongbreeze blowing to the sea reducedtile danger to surrounding properly. How the til o originated is unknown. Its occiu rence is a strong argumentfur thu projected fire company atWaikiki.

TROUBLE AT SPREGKELSVILLE.

There was serious trouble amongthe Japanese laborers on the Sprcck-elsvill- e,

Maui, plantation, weekbefore last. Hon. A. S. Cleghorn,Inspector-Gener- al of Immigrants, and Mr. Ito, one of the Japaneseconsular seci claries, went to thebpot, and witli more or less diff-iculty succeeded in restoring orderand subordination among the re-

calcitrant Japs. It appears that theliceused liquor dealer at Wailukuhad furnished the Japanese with acoiibidcrablu supply of liquor, tocany away with them, contrary tothe condition of license requiring allthe stuff sold to be drunk on thepieuiises. The consequence wasthat the laborers iiillamed witli drinkbecame disorderly and refused towok, Hence the necessity foroiticial intervention (is staled above.

AM IMPORTANT EXPERIMENT,

Dr. Goto, a resident Japanesophysician, whoso father mndo a pro-fessional sun ly of leprosy in Japanfor forty yeais, was lately allowedto begin a course of treatment upontwelve patients seven males andfive femnles-i- n tho Kakaako branchhospital. He has now been attend-ing to them about three weeks, and itis said a measure of success highlyencouraging lias followed his ser-vices. P.iins that have afflicted someof the subjects for years arc nowabsent; lung dead flesh lni9 recov-ered sensibility; stiff joints have re-

gained to a great extent their mo-bility; hard swellings have disap-peared, and the general health ofsupposed hopeless cases lias to farimproved as to give the sufferers aprospect of complete recovery. Thodoctor is tonlident of his ability tocute lcproy, andsays he did not comehere to learn how. It will be anoccasion of universal rejoicing if liejustifies his confidence by restoringeven one unfortunate of those underhis hands to home and friends," whole as befote." Dr. Goto isalso treating leprous patients outsideof the hospital, it is asserted withpromising results.

THE RLCEPT10N.

Last evening's entertainment andreception tendered the crew of HerBrittanic Majesty's Steamship Con-

stance by the Honolulu YoungMen's Christian Association, wasa grand success. Too much creditcannot lie accorded the lady friendsof the institution for their kindassistance, as well as for the super!)manner in which they carried outthe several parts taken by them inthe programme. And the enthu-siastic cheers and applause thatshook the building at the conclu-sion of every performance inwhich a lady appeared, showed thattheir good will was fully appreciatedboth by the jolly tars and by thecitizens. The crew, all in navaluniform, occupied the center of thehall. The broad shoulders audinussivc build of the men suggestedthe thought that if these are fairspecimens of the physique of theBritish naval scivicc, it need be nowonder that the Ueet of old Brit-tani- a

commands the respect of allnations. A short address of wel-

come was delivered by Mr. T. II.Davies, which, he said, was not in-

tended as a greeting from him asConsular representative of the Bri-

tish Government, or as an English-man speaking to Englishmen, butrather as chairman of the Entertain-ment Committee of the Y. M. C. A.,an organization, lie observed, whichis open, whether in Honolulu,Boston or London, to the beamanaud tho stranger from whateverpart of the world lie comes. The loud applause that followedMr. Davies's "welcome" showedthat he had well voiced the senti-ments of the audience. A duet wasfinely sung by Mr. and Miss VonHolt, "Life's dream is o'er," withpiano accompaniment by Mrs. Hand-lor- d.

Rev. George Wallace's read-ing in 6erio-coini- o tones, "Episodeot Country Life," brought downthe house at nearly cery sen-

tence. Miss McBryde sung "Itmust be so" and was deservedly re-

ceived with an enthusiastic encore, which was responded to in ano less effective manner witli "Somuch I love." General SecretaryFuller than came lorward with asolid five minutes' address that hadin it the ring of "genuine metal allthrough and through." Mr. audMrs. Walker, the latter at the piano, uang n eiy line duet, "Friend-ship," by Slarzinls, whicli was ed

with enthusiasm. Mrs. Adamsfollowed witli a reading, "TheBrides of En derby," by Whittier. This selection, in which the breakingin of the wateis of the Trent andthe duvactatinns occasioned therebyare graphically portrayed, was readwitli a thiilliiig power of elocutionthat held the audience spell-boun- d

from first to last. The Rev. A. D.Miller annou need himself "a liveYankee," and said lie hoped neverto meet a British tar in any othercapacity that that of giving him acoidiul greeting. This gentleman'saddress was characterized by thedexterous manner in which he nailedgreat moral truths to the masthead, interspersing the blows of theclergyman's hatchet with the Hashingwit of the humorist. Mr. F. Damonwas called, and spoke on behalf ofhis late, worthy father, the venerableDr. Damon, the sailor's specialfriend and counsellor for many years, and at thu conclusion of his remarks, presented tho crew with files of"The Friend" covering a periodof thiity years, and containing, practically, the history of Polynesiaduring that time. Mrs. Handfordand Mr. Yurnilley then gave one ofthose rich piano and violin duetswhich have made tho " eloquent air"breathe melody on so many similaroccasions, and being encored, sup-plemented the performance with ananother exquisite piece "Abschied."MibS Beitlia Voir Holt's singing ofLouis Di-ehl'- s "Going to Market"carried the sailor boys away in 'atornado of applause, whicli againburst toith witli redoubled enthusi-asm, vvben, in response to the encore, they were Ueatyd to "The Maid

of Dimrtoo," Mr. Tbeo, H. Davieeung in Ids usual happy style,"Three Jolly Sailors," which raisedthe man-of-war- 's men to high a pitchof excitement. In response to anenthusiastic encore, Mr. Davie3threw tho audience into a furore ofmerriment by singing "As I'd no-

thing else to do." A chorus ofladies, led by Professor Yarndlcy, sung the closing piece, which wasrendered in a manner to elicit un-

qualified admiration. Part secondof tlie entertainment consisted of aliberal collation of ice cream andcake, thu passing round of whicliwas attended to by a troop of ladsand young ladies whose youthfulfaces doubtless reminded many nweather beaten mariner in that crewof his homo across the sea. Beforethe ice cream and cake pait of thoprogramme was altogether gotthrough with, part third was called, and consisted of songs and recita-tions by sotno of the crow. Smithrecited effectively "Tho Pauper'sDinner." Puttef'ord followed witli"Homo on the Ocean Wave," cho-rtiss-

by the crew. Penfold, thepoet of tho Constance, sung a mosthumorous piece,"Things that puzzlethe sailor," convulsing the housewitli laughter at every stanza.

recited, with massive elo-

cutionary spirit, "Mary, Queen ofScots." Penfold, the poet, followedwitli a witty piece, "The Journal ofthe Constance," the crew joining inthe chorus. Captain Doughty thank-ed the friends and members of theassociation for their entertainment, and remarked that when here twoyears ago, he had seen the letters"Y. M. C. A." over the door, andnot knowing whut they meant, sethimself to woik to figure out theineainng, and enme to the conclu-sion that they stood for "You Menof the Constance, Ahoy I" Afterthe reception on this occasion, hethought that he must have beenabout right, for it was now clearthat Y. M. C. A. docs mean "YouMen of the Constance, Ahoy!" Thecaptain concluded by proposing"three cheers for the ladies" whichwere given with tremendous vimand heartiness. "God save theQueen," sung by the crew, closedthe pioceediugs.

De.vu Sistkus and FniESDS: Inthis smallest of all civilized coun-tries, wc are gathered asone of the outposts of the greattemperance army, which, ucver re-

treating, with steadily increasingnumbers, is marching grandly for-ward to conquer the world 1

Who would have thought when, twelve years ago, a few tremblingwomen met in a little church in anobscure town in Ohio, and inaugur-ated the "temperance crusade,"singing as they marched out of thechurch door" Give to the wind- - thy fears.

Hope and be undismayed:God hears thy sighs, and sees thv tears,

He shall lift up thy head."That the little spring thus openedshould so soon grow to be a stream,a river a flood an ocean, whichshall cover the earth ! For, believeme, dear friends, this is sure to bethe result of it.

' ""We may not live to see the day.But earth 'hall gladden with the r.i..

Of this good time coming."

It was a very small beginning. We were but women. We had beentaught that it was unseemly for usto take any public places, and whereour teachings, led us, our hearts fol-

lowed. Wc did not want to leavethe retirements of our happy homes, and enter the battle which we sawwc must light. But, God pity us!Those dearer to us than our liveswere subject to a danger from whichour weak hands could not rescuethem. We could pray for them, and wc did! but wc felt that prayermust bo supplemented by work.Wo could no longer stand by lookingto politicians, to the party in power,to legislatures and congress to ridus of this demon whose loathsomeform stretched at all our thrcsh-liold- s,

if his form had not alreadyan abode at our very firesides. When wc plead with the law-make-

their answer was, more or lesscurtly: "Wc can do nothing foryou; it is not in our province."Or, at most, a weak attempt to"regulate the tralllc in liquors,"

, was all that we could secure.Gradually and unwillingly to the

women of America came the con-viction that to the part of the na-tion to whom is given "half thewisdom, more than half the purity, and nearly all the gentleness," Godhad assigned the duty, not only ofpraying for the overthrow of theliquor power, but of laboring to thisend, as He should give them wis-

dom. Having no political power,wc had nothing to fear from politi-cal parties; and more than thatbeing ho rarely subject to the temp-tation which enslaves the body andsoul, wc could labor with cleanhands and strong faith. Have youheard of the old lady, who, afterviewing a brewery, a distillery, anda tobacco factory, exclaimed "AintI thankful that the women folkshaven't got all that stuff to smokoand chew and swallow down!"

And so, after the crusader hadmiraculously opened to the eyes ofAmerican women their strength andthe source of their power, the Wo-

man's Christians Temperance Unionwas organized.

If we ask what is the clement inthis organization which has given itsucli an acceptance with all goodpeople which has placed it by theYoung Men's Christian Associationas one of tho two great mora) powersof the world, auxiliary to tho Church

of Christ, the answer cannot be hardto find. Without doubt as MissWlllard has said, "The decisiondeliberately reached at their organ-ization to stand by the name as wellas tho faith of Him to whom womanowes nil she has come to be," andthe prayerful Christian spirit whichcharacterizes all their efforts, is thetrue secret of their power.

Within tho twclvo years of exist-ence tliis "sober second thought oftho crusade," has crystallized intopermanent form in a nationalstate and territorial, district, countyand local organization. All thelarge cities and towns in the UnitedStates aro buzzing with tile busywomen who aro tireless in this work, aud almost every hamlet has itsband of quiet workers, who havenevertheless found tho fulcrum uponwhich rests tho lever which shallmove the world! There arc tenthousand organized Unions, with amembership of two hundred thou-sand women of all nationalities, races and conditions. According totheir creed, they are a "Union ofChristian Women of nil Churchesfor the purpose of educating theyoung, forming a better publicsentiment; reforming the drinkingclasses ; transforming by the powerof divine grace, those who arc en-

slaved by alcohol ; and removingthe dram-sho- p from our streets bylaw."

The results of any such greatwork as this, must be to a grcnt ex-

tent invisible to human eyes. Tosow beside all waters, is our work. The great harvest wc may not see.But it must be evident that agreat effect is being produced uponthe women of the land, not only ingiving wise avenues for energiesheretofore downcast orbut in forming an intelligent senti-ment upon this subject than whichnone is more important in the house, and in "that larger house we callsociety." Much time in everymeeting is devoted to discussing avariety of topics relating to temper-ance and intemperance. Two hun-dred thousand wives and mothersand sisters arc daily preachersand examples of temperance prin-ciples in their own households.

.They arc learning that there is danger lurking in every teaspoonful ofwine in the sauce, or the tablcspoon-fu- l

of brandy in the pie ; that ten-

dencies which may be most fatalmay be found in the earliest yearsof chtldhood; that no appetite ismore sure to be inherited than thatof a taste for liquor. It cannot beotherwise than that the chililrcn inthese families should imbibe tem-

perance sentiments from their in-

fancy, and thus grow up, not onlyintelligent and interested on thesesubjects, but to a great extent freefrom the tasto which so surely leadsinto temptation. In addition tothese home influences, thrown aboutthe children in so many families,scientific temperance education isnow made compulsory in all thepublic schools in fourteen of theStates. Bands of hope and varioustemperance societies among childrenand young pcoplo are everywhereorganized ; temperance papers andlcatlels for children arc circulated ;

quartciiy temperance lessons in theSabbath school are secured ; and inso mairy ways instruction and in-

fluence arc brought to bear uponthe rising generation, that theymust grow up with a much clearerestimate of this "spirit of evil" thantheir fathers and mothers had.
