UNDERSTANDING THE SPORTHOW IT ALL BEGANThe oldest sport in the Olympic Games, played since its first edition in Ancient Greece, in 776 BC, athletics is now the sport that most distributes medals in the Games: 141, altogether, from which 47 are gold. With its great number of events, no wonder that it is also a fertile ground for the emergence of legendary figures, such as Brazilians Adhemar Ferreira da Silva and Joaquim Cruz, North American Jesse Owens and British Sebastian Coe.
ABOUT THE COMPETITIONAll the track events (24 altogether) vary in distance, from 100m to 10,000m, and will have up to 3 rounds (first round, semi-finals and finals). The number of rounds in each event will be based on the number of athletes. The exceptions are men’s and women’s 10,000m competitions, with a final with no qualifiers. The 16 field events (throw, put and jump) will be comprised of a qualification round and a final. The joint events, heptathlon (women) and decathlon (men), will be held in a series of competitions throughout two days.
DID YOU KNOW?Speed is the trademark of Usain Bolt, the Jamaican who became a global phenomenon in Beijing 2008, when he won 3 gold medals, breaking records in all competitions he participated: 100m, 200m and 4 x 100m. He repeated the feat in London 2012.
WHILE YOU WATCHPlease kindly remain silent at the start of the runs.

OSE Athletics - marathon S A M B Ó D R O M O
UNDERSTANDING THE SPORTHOW IT ALL BEGANPresent in the Olympic Games since Athens 1896, the marathon is a competition that demands a lot from the athlete and requires a huge endurance. It is also a sport with a lot of history to tell: its creation was a tribute to the Greek soldier Pheidippides, a messenger who ran from the battlefield of Marathon to Athens (a distance of 40km) to announce the Greek victory over the Persians. It all happened around 490 BC, and legend has it that the messenger died of exhaustion right after accomplishing his mission.
ABOUT THE COMPETITIONThe rule is simple, but the challenge is not easy at all: the athlete who first completes the distance of 42.195m wins the gold medal. The route to success involves, in great part, the athlete’s ability to control their own rhythm – besides obviously overcoming the opponents.
DID YOU KNOW?• The last two editions of the Olympic
Games established new records to the marathon. In Beijing 2008, in the men’s race, Kenyan Samuel Kamau Wanjiru ran the course in 2h06min32s. Among women, Ethiopian Tiki Gelana accomplished the time of 2h23min07s in London 2012
• Brazilian Vanderlei Cordeiro was close to winning an unprecedented gold medal for Brazil at Athens 2004 when someone invaded the track and grabbed him for a few seconds. Vanderlei lost the lead, but won the bronze medal – the only medal the country won in athletics at those Games. Later on, he won the Pierre de Coubertin medal for his Olympic spirit

OSE Athletics - race walk P O N TA L
UNDERSTANDING THE SPORTHOW IT ALL BEGANThe beginning of the walk dates back to the 17th and 18th centuries. The first competitors were employees who used to run or walk next to their employers’ vehicles. The walk made its debut in the Olympic programme at St. Louis 1904, but women only started competing at Barcelona 1992.
ABOUT THE COMPETITIONThe events are disputed in the distances of 20km for women and 20km and 50km for men. The athlete is called walker and needs to keep contact with the ground with at least one foot at all times, avoiding running. Additionally, at each step, the leg that moves forward needs to remain straightened. The execution of this movement is what causes the wiggle of the hips, typical of the sport.
DID YOU KNOW?• Polish Robert Korzeniowski is the only
Olympic walk triple champion. He won a gold medal at Atlanta 1996, Sydney 2000 and Athens 2004. In Sydney, he also became the only walker to win the 20km and the 50km events at the same Olympic Games edition. The 50km record was broken in Beijing in 2008 by Italian Alex Schwazer. However, at London 2012, the time was reduced again: Russian Sergey Kirdyapkin completed the event in 3h35min59s
• The rules that stop walkers from running are strictly judged, and violations are usually rigorously punished. At Moscow 1980, seven athletes were disqualified from the 20km men’s event
