Emily Grimshaw: Focus group of Final Product

We created a focus group of Facebook that

included 6 people; we posted a link to our draft edit of our music video final product. We then asked our participants to answer 5 questions on the music video. This allowed us to gain an outside opinion on the positive and negative elements of our music video and this will allow us to develop our music video so that it was more appropriate for our demographic.

The first question we asked was “How effective are the special effects used?” and the feedback we gained to this was that our special effects were used well and contributed towards the final image of our product. A few comments said that the effects weren’t too obvious and that they didn’t over power the video. This was is a response that we were hoping for because we didn’t want to use a filter over the top of our footage that would distract away from the storyline; we were hoping it would complement it. One comment said that they though the ‘Luma’ effect made the video appear atmospheric which is what we wanted because the filter was primarily used to convey the lonely emotions of the artist and the dark filter connote this.

Then next question was “Is the narrative easy to understand/relatable?” our response was that the narrative was easy to follow which was crucial when we were filming and editing the video especially when creating an enigmatic and time distorted structured video. It was also said that the footage is relatable to the audience which is another element that we were hoping for. Due to our demographic being young adults/teenagers we used actors of a similar age so that the audience was able to relate to them because hey may have had similar relationship problems their selves

Another question we asked was “what improvements would you make to the video?” the overall response to this was that nothing major needed to be changed to the video however there was some issues with the continuity of the footage because some of the filming was more exposed than others. We had noticed this ourselves so we tried to correct it in our final edit by applying a filter over the top of the ‘Argument’ scene which was slightly too exposed, this improved the quality and made the clips fit together better which ultimately made the video appear more realistic.

The fourth question was “how effective were the flashbacks are they clear” our participants answered saying that they are helpful in creating an emotion response, we intended this because the flashbacks were used to convey the idea that the relationship was all the character can think of, it also shows the regret she feels towards it. Another person also said that the flashback is effective in conveying the characters emotion and that this fits with the theme of the music. The flashback was also use because the narrative of our video is quite conventional however we thought that the flashback element broke these conventions.

The last question was “is the indie/alternative genre conveyed well?” a lot of the responses stated that this was done effectively through conventions and element such as props, setting and narrative. This was crucial to us because the audience will be able to instantly recognise the genre of or video therefore making our video conform to the audience’s needs.
