◦ Green LED indicates the gauge is connected to the interface box. It should blink during normal gauge/computer polling

◦ Red LED indicates the external power supply is connected to interface box. It should be lit all the time

◦ The Interface Box uses the Belkin F5U257 USB-to-Serial Adapter.

◦ Download and install the Belkin F5U257 driver on your computer, BEFORE plugging the INTERFACE BOX into your computer.

◦ ONLY download and use the driver for “Windows or Vista 64-bit”

◦ It is very important that you first install the correct BELKIN adapter driver on your computer, BEFORE for you plug-in the Interface Box to the computer.

◦ ONLY use the driver For Windows Vista or Windows 7, 64-bit. This will also work for Windows 10.

◦ DO NOT install any other drivers.


•FIRST, save the correct zipped driver file to your computer Desktop.

•Unzip the driver files to your MAIN C:/ driver. You will need administrative Rights to do this.

•After unzipping the Driver file, plug the IES Interface Box into your computer’s USB port. Do NOT plus it into an USB Expansion port.

•The computer should say your driver was properly installed after a minute or two, and show a COM port.

•REBOOT YOUR COMPUTER.

•Go to your Device Manager. Select the Ports (COM & LPT), and be sure the Belkin COM port is installed between COM5 and COM9 or between COM11 and COM19.


•If the right COM port isn’t selected, then right click on the Belkin Port, and under Properties, select PORT SETTINGS, and ADVANCED. Change the port to between COM5 and COM9 or between COM11 and COM19. IGNORE any warnings that the port is already in use.

•Exit the Device manager, and reboot your computer.

•ALWAYS BE SURE that the Interface Box (Belkin adapter) is plugged into your computers USB port, before you start the OWR software.

If the gauge still does not make LINK to the computer

◦ Exit the IES software and unplug unplug the Interface Box

◦ Reboot your computer

◦ Make sure you have installed the proper BELKIN USB/Serial Adapter drivers (F5U257) for your computer’s Operating System (Windows 64-bit).

(You can download the drivers from http://iesrecorders.com/owrsoftware.htm )

◦ Plug the Interface Box back into a USB port.

◦ Be sure the USB from the Interface Box is plugged DIRECTLY into your computer.

◦ (NOTE: DO NOT connect the USB/Serial Adapter to a USB expander port/box)


If the gauge still does not make LINK to the computer

◦ Go to the CONTROL PANEL, SYSTEM, HARDWARE, DEVICE MANAGER and VERIFY the BELKIN USB/Serial Adapter’s COM port is set to COM5 to COM9, or COM11 to COM19.

◦ If NOT, then change it by going to the CONTROL PANEL, SYSTEM, and DEVICE MANAGER, and select COM & LPT: Then, Select the BELKIN adapter and right-click on PROPERTIES. Go to PORTS, and ADVANCED to change the COM port number. Ignore any warnings.

◦ Reboot the computer

◦ Restart the IES Software

◦ ALL 3 LED lights on the Interface Box should be ON.

◦ NOTE: If power is first applied to the gauge, or the “RED Kill Switch” was just removed, the gauge will not make LINK for 15-30 seconds.


If the gauge still does not make LINK to the computer, your Belkin Serial Adapter DRIVERS might be installed incorrectly. Try this…

◦ Go to the CONTROL PANEL, and select “Programs and Features (or ADD/REMOVE Programs)”

◦ Remove / Uninstall ALL Programs or Drivers that refernence “BELKIN” in the software description

◦ Reboot your computer

◦ Go to the IES Website and download/save on your “C: DRIVE” the correctBelkin F5U257 Driver for your Belkin Driver/Interface Box and operating system (Windows 7, 64-bit).

◦ Gauge is in the Low Power mode, drawing typically under 1 - 2 mA of battery power

◦ Every 5-6 minutes the gauge wakes up, and powers up it’s pressure sensor, and checks what the pressure is in the well. If the pressure has exceeded the Auto Start Pressure threshold, then the gauge begins RECORDING DATA in the SLOW speed mode. If not, the gauge goes back into it low power mode.

◦ If the gauge is in the AUTO START ENABLED mode, and the RED KILL SWITCH is still installed in the gauge, this turns off the gauge and battery pack.

◦ **BUT, when the RED KILL SWITCH is pulled again, the gauge auotmattically starts back up in the AUTO START ENABLED mode, looking for the auto start pressure once every 5-6 minutes.

“SLOW Sampling Speed”

◦ When the Gauge starts recording data, it begins storing data at the “Slow Speed” sampling rate.

◦ Note: If the gauge is not recording data in the FAST speed or INTERMEDIATE speed modes, it is ALWAYS recording data in the SLOW speed mode.

◦ The ONLY time the Gauge does NOT start in the “Slow Speed” is if the “Fast Speed on Startup” has been enabled in the settings menu.

◦ They are 8 SLOW speed options, which can be programmed in the RECORDER SETTINGS menu.


“FAST Sampling Speed”

◦ When an “Internal Auto Trigger” occurs (i.e. the pressure exceeds the programmed threshold), or the “External (T2) G-Switch Trigger” occurs (if enabled), the Gauge begins storing data at the “FAST Speed” sampling rate (115,000 data points per second).

◦ The gauge records data in FAST speed for the length of time in the “Fast Speed Window”.


“INTERMEDIATE Sampling Speed”

◦ After the “FAST Speed” sampling window has completed, the Gauge will automatically begin storing data at the “INTERMEDIATE Speed” sampling rate (if this mode is enabled).

◦ After the “INTERMEDIATE Speed” sampling window has completed, the Gauge will go back to storing data at the “SLOW Speed” sampling rate.

◦ The INTERMEDIATE SPEED WINDOW can be programmed in the RECORDER SETTINGS menu.

◦ They are 8 INTERMEDIATE speed options.

◦ NOTE: The Gauge can go back into the “FAST Speed” mode before it returns

to the “SLOW Speed” mode, if another “Trigger” event occurs while in the

“INTERMEDIATE Speed” mode.

◦ When the Gauge is “Recording Data” and the battery voltage goes below a safe operating voltage, the gauge will automatically STOP recording data and go to SLEEP, to maintain the pressure data in the gauge memory.

◦ This feature helps maintain the data in memory if the Gauge cannot be recovered in a timely manner and the Battery Pack voltage becomes low.

◦ NOTE: ALWAYS plug an External 9 volt battery or External 9 or 15vdc power supply into the Interface Box for backup power, BEFORE you connect the gauge to the computer/interface box.

The “Low Battery Shutdown Value” determines the battery voltage the Gauge will stop and go to sleep. You can EDIT this value in the “Recorder SETTINGS” menu.

For normal gauge operation, this should never be changed. Don’t change this value without first consulting with Scott Ager.

To change this value: First, go to EDIT, then “Low Battery Shutdown Value”. Then enter “IESIES” to change the “Low Batt Shutdown” value. “80” for the Series 300 gauges and “47” for the Series 400 gauges.

This menu tests the sensors and internal voltages of the Gauge . This also allows you to test the battery packs under load and de-passivate the lithium battery packs. It can be used for Gauge Diagnostics.

BEFORE you proceed with the Test Sensors menu, ALWAYS disconnect any external power to the interface box so you are putting a load on the installed Battery Packs to test them under load (unless you are testing the OWR Section ONLY with no battery packs installed).

IF you have LITHIUM battery packs installed in the gauge, ALWAYS select the “De-Passivate Lithium Battery (Recommended)” option, to make sure your lithium battery packs are they passivated.

◦ When you first download the gauge data, you should move the CURSOR to the point in the pressure file that the guns first begin firing. The time before this point will be “negative”, and the time after this point will be “positive”.

◦ Then go to TOOLS, and select “Set ZERO TIME Point”.

◦ Be sure to go to FILE and select SAVE, to permanently save this change.

◦ If you want to copy a picture of the data on the computer screen to the PAINT program, you can use the ALT-PRINT SCREEN keys to copy it into the clipboard.

◦ You can then paste the picture into PAINT for editing. You can use cut and paste, and copy this into an email or report.

◦ You can also use the Microsoft “SNIPPING TOOL” to copy the picture on the screen

◦ If you don’t want the CURSOR to be displayed in the data picture when you go to the CURSOR menu, and you can HIDE the cursor.

You can take your JOB/LOG time/date information from your Job, and look for a event in the log the corresponds to a pressure event in the datafile.

◦ Place the CURSOR at this exact point in the pressure data file.

◦ Then, you can go to the TOOLS menu and select “SET Reference time/date Stamp at Cursor”.

◦ Enter in the TIME and DATE information in the yellow box, and then select “Set NEW time/date stamp (at cursor)”

◦ NOTE: be sure that you go to the FILE menu, and select SAVE, to permanently saved this information to your data file.

There are TWO ways to program the “Settings” into the gauge for a before a job.

◦ Go directly into the EDIT: RECORDER SETTINGS menu, and manually make changes to the settings menu, and then save these settings to the gauge.

◦ Taking a .DEF file that was email to you, or that you had previously saved on your computer, and going to the CONTROL menu and selecting “Program Gauge with.def Disk File” to program the gauge directly.

◦ To program the Gauge Settings before a JOB, go to the “EDIT: Recorder Settings” menu. Enter the .DEF file stored on your hard drive.

◦ SAVE any changes back to the Gauge after you make changes. Note: The Gauge Settings will remain programmed in the gauge even when power is removed.

◦ A Gauge can also be programmed with a Disk File, referred to as a “Default Settings File (*.def)”

◦ You can create this (*.def) File in the “EDIT: RECORDER SETTINGS” menu when the Gauge is linked to the computer.

◦ You can also create a (*.def) File in the “TOOLS: MAKE DEFAULT SETTINGS FILE” when you VIEW an OWR Data File.

◦ Note: Always use a data file with the SAME Gauge S/N that you want to program.

◦ You can LOAD a (*.def) Disk File from your computer when you are in the “EDIT: RECORDER SETTINGS” menu (while the Gauge is linked to the computer), but you MUST SAVE the new settings back to the Gauge.

◦ You can also program the Settings directly into the Gauge, when it is linked to the computer, by going to “CONTROL” and “PROGRAM RECORDER WITH DISK FILE”. It will ask you what Disk File (*.def) you want to use to program the Gauge with.

1. VIEW an OWR Data File which was recorded with the same Serial Number Gauge, you are creating the Default Gauge Settings File (*.def) for.

2. Go to TOOLS: MAKE DEFAULT SETTINGS FILE to display the “Settings” of the Gauge used to create the data file.

3. The Settings of the data file will be displayed, and you can then change the gauge settings for your next job.

When you are done, you can go to “FILE: SAVE SETTINGS TO DISK FILE” to make a (*.def) file which can be used to program your gauge.

“Auto” Start◦ The Gauge is enabled to “Start Recording Data” after the actual pressure

value (i.e.1000 psi) exceeds the programmed Pressure Threshold. Note: This only can occur if the Gauge is NOT connected to the computer.

◦ The “Wakeup Time” determines how often the Gauge will “wake up” to check the pressure to see if it has exceed the Threshold Pressure. If the pressure is NOT above the Threshold Pressure, the gauge goes back to sleep again. If the pressure value is above the Threshold, and remains above it for the Threshold Time, the gauge will START recording data.

◦ Draws ~2 mA when the gauge is not connected to the computer, and it is checking the pressure.

“Auto” Start

◦ IMPORTANT: ALWAYS set the AUTO START Pressure at ~1000 psi BELOW the hydro static pressure at the Gauge’s location downhole.


“Auto” Start Options◦ “Low Power Mode” (Advantage: Long Battery Life)

◦ Checks Pressure for one second, based on the “Wakeup Time”. The DEFAULT “Wakeup Time” setting is 255.

◦ If Pressure exceed the “Threshold”, the Pressure must then remain above the “Threshold” for the “Threshold Time”. If this happens, the Gauge is then “Started”. The DEFAULT “Threshold Time” is 30 seconds.

◦ If the Pressure falls below the “Threshold” at any time, this Mode is reset and the Gauge goes back to sleep.

download the data.

Download ALL Data◦ Downloads all the data in Gauge’s memory.

Quick Download (Recommended)

◦ Downloads only the “Valid Memory” data.

◦ When collecting data, sometimes not all the memory is used to store the data, so the Gauge keeps track of how much data has actually been stored in memory. The Gauge will indicate how much data was stored into memory, and this download option downloads ONLY that data.

NOTE: If in doubt, use the “Download ALL Data” option.


◦ If a “PARITY ERROR” occurs while downloading the data, just try downloading the data again. This error sometime occurs in noisy environments.

◦ NOTE: The data can be downloaded as many times as you want to.

◦ The data remains in the Series 300 Gauge memory until EITHER you remove the Battery Fixture, install the “Red Kill Switch”, or you “START” the Gauge again.

◦ The Series 400 gauge has non-volatile memory, so removing the power does not erase the data.


◦ If you see the WARNING below, save the data anyways, and look at the downloaded to see it is OK. You can download the data as many times as you want to.

◦ If you still have problems downloading the data, reboot your computer, and re-start the OWR software, and try downloading the data again.

◦ If problems persist, try downloading the data with a different computer.
