A Note About Your Financial

Contributions to First Lutheran

When making a financial contribution to the church, it is no longer necessary for us to know your envelope number, or even for you to use an envelope at all - we only need your name so that we can give credit to the proper person. Taking that into consideration…..

If you make a contribution using a per-sonal check with your name on it, you may simply place your check in the of-fering plate - it is not necessary to use an envelope.

If, however, your offering is in cash and you want to receive credit for it under your name, then it should be placed in an envelope with your name written on it so that it gets credited to your own personal contribution statement.

Unless you indicate that you would like your offering placed in a specific fund (i.e. - missions, kitchen, building, etc.), all contributions are posted to the Unified Fund, which is used to cover mainte-nance and operating expenses.

THANK YOU!

Ask Pastor Tony . . . . . .

Dear Friends,

There has been much conversation about the use of the American Flag in the church throughout the course of history. Let me unpack a little of that history for you and offer an explanation of our current practice and thoughts.

The American flag did not appear in Christian church sanctuaries prior to WWI. The pride that was brought back after the WWI theater was so great that the flag was displayed everywhere, including the sanctuary of the Christian church. This response was also a patriotic movement of sacredization of the flag…..hence, you will see pictures of towns before and after WWI with and without the flag prominently displayed. Many congregations choose to display the flag on a flag pole outside of the church, either taking it up and down ceremoniously at dusk and dawn or having it lit at all times, which is the appropriate etiquette. The American Flag is ultimately some-thing that is considered in the church adiaphiron - i.e., neither commanded nor forbidden by the Holy Scriptures.

To me, as a very patriotic, awarded civilian of the United States Marine Corps and a former chap-lain for the United States Department of Veterans Affairs, I want to see the flag displayed. I do not believe that the flag is appropriate in the sanctu-ary, however. When we worship in God’s house, we hang up our political views, secularization, and the items of the world at the door so that we can concentrate on the risen Savior, Jesus Christ…that is MOST important. For as many as the American flag is a symbol of pride, it is also a stumbling block of faith for just as many.

God is without country. As we left the ELCA, we joined the NALC, the North American Lutheran Church. We are represented by churches in the United States, Canada and mission congregations in Mexico. Do we display their flags? We had a pastor serve us from Madagascar….do we display that flag? We have missionaries in Nigeria….

do we display that flag? I was a missionary in Jamaica….how about that flag? Do we display the flag of our enemies, as we should be praying for them? We could go on and on, but at the end of the day, God is without country and so is the sanctuary.

The flags in our sanctuary were moved in the early fall because we were painting in the sanc-tuary. When they were moved we found that the flag poles were in need of replacement or repair. They were moved to the fellowship hall where they have been ever since. The poles have been cut to the appropriate height and are dis-played well there. The movement has nothing to do with dishonoring our country or our veterans of multiple theaters but everything to do with honoring God in God’s house. Scripture teaches us in Luke 20:22, “Render unto Caesar what is Caesar’s and render to God what is God’s”. Also, in Galatians 3:28, “There is nei-ther Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.” Ponder these texts that Jesus taught us.

Plans are being made to display a flag in the narthex of the church to present our United States flag reverently. We would like to display the flag to honor our veterans and to remind us pray for our country as we go into the sanctuary and out into the world. This is most appropri-ate. Yes, we pray for our veterans and service people weekly in our worship, but we also pray for those whom we are pitted against in the secular world of wars, turmoil, and strife.

Do you know what the “other” flag was? I’ll quote Lutheran Professor Rev. Dr. William Schmelder. “The so-called Christian flag is another matter entirely. It has no tradition of the church behind it. In fact, it violates much of what anyone knows of ecclesiastical heraldry. It seems to be the design of one man, who both drew it and profits from it. He or his heirs still get a royalty on every one sold. People seem to think that you need something to balance the U.S. flag on the other side, so you have a Christian flag.” …..continued on pg. 4

The Christian flag is a contemporary item in the

church. The problem with this Christian Flag in

the sanctuary, or anywhere for that matter, is

that there is a “Pledge of Allegiance” to that

very flag. This is extremely problematic, not to

mention highly heretical and doctrinally un-

sound. When we enter into the sanctuary of

God’s house, we DO NOT pledge to ANY-

THING other than to make our confession of

faith in the risen Lord, Christ Jesus. To make a

pledge (i.e. - confession) to anything other than

Christ Jesus holds us in direct violation of the

First Commandment, “I am the Lord your God,

you are to have no other gods before me.” Mar-

tin Luther wrote extensively about this as idola-

try in the Large and Small Catechisms in the

Book of Concord….the collective confession of

the Lutheran Church and the books which con-

tain our doctrine based on the Holy Scripture,

all of which, as I stood before Christ in my ordi-

nation and at the altar of First Lutheran, I prom-

ised to uphold, protect, and teach to the best of

my ability. Thus, my reason for this essay.

I write not to persuade, but to inform, but also

as your trusted leader. As you called me to be

your senior pastor, you called me to be the

chief theologian, preacher, and protector of the

faith. The above exemplifies all of these dutiful

skills as I serve you, but also - and chiefly -

serve our risen Lord, Christ Jesus. As always, I

am available for conversation about this and

many other items of the faith.

Yours in Christ, Rev. Tony D. Ede

Stewardship Update…..

Many of us have a busy summer ahead with vacations, planned events, etc., that will take us away from our weekend worship. As you all know, business goes on as usual, and bills continue (they never go on a vacation!). Please consider your commitment to weekly/monthly giving by remembering to send your tithe by mail or dropping it off at the office. It is essential to keep our church's financial goals all year around. Thank you for your consideration. Join First Lutheran at the “Rhubarb Fest” on June 7th, from 9:00-1:00 at Baum Park. It is a growing event with food, crafts, and more. We are looking for your BEST Rhubarb recipes. Please email them to Lynne at [email protected], or to Verla at [email protected]. Our goal is to distribute them to those who stop by our booth. If anyone has extra rhubarb, we would also like to have bundles to sell at our booth. Contact me, Verla, with any questions.

Gather together with family and friends to support cancer research by joining our efforts for the Ameri-can Cancer Society’s “Relay for Life” on June 27th, 5:00 P.M. until midnight at the Delaware County Fair-grounds. Even if you are unable to 'walk the walk', be present to enjoy the gathering, provide your emo-tional support, and 'talk the talk'. A sign-up sheet is in the narthex, and there will also be a donation box along with a fun guessing game to help financially support the research to find a cure for cancer.

In 1985, a man in Tacoma, Washington donated an impressive $27,000.00 to the American Cancer Society after walking and running a track for 24 hours straight. He was set to help the people who touched his life, and their struggles with can-cer. A year later, 340 people joined in to help. Nearly 30 years later, millions of people have walked or donated to the cause.....we call it the “Relay for Life”. And now, you know the rest of the story (as Paul Harvey would say). Please join in supporting this worthy cause in June during the Mission of the Month noisy can collection. Our First Lutheran relay team will be proud to present a check to the American Cancer Society from our church, supplied by your mindful stewardship.

Our curriculum extends beyond attending worship and class time to study the Bible and the Cate-

chism. Students volunteered their time at church, in their respective schools, and communities per-

forming a combined 413 hours! Highlights of their volunteer activities include buddy (PAL) read-

ing with elementary students, helping with Sunday School, acolyting and other lay ministry du-

ties, donating food to the food banks, making ornaments for our “Touch of Christmas Love” tree,

donating to Coats for Kids, bringing food for Lenten meals and working in the kitchen, babysit-

ting, doing work for the elderly, and so much more!

Sunday School Teacher/Shepherd Recognition

As the Sunday School year has drawn to a close,

I need to take a moment to recognize the people

who brought six Bible stories--King David, King

Solomon and his temple, the Names of Jesus, four

miracles (Healing of the Blind Man, Healing of

the Paralytic, Feeding the 5000 and Calming the

Storm), and Doubting Thomas and the Road to

Emmaus--to life for the elementary members of

our congregation.

The success of our program hinges directly on the

involvement of teachers and adult and youth shep-

herds. I am truly blessed to have worked with such

a creative, adaptable, energetic, and caring group

of risk takers. Week after week, you played a vital

role in the lives of so many while taking a faith

journey with the students.

We are already looking forward to next year and are

planning Rally Day activities for Sunday, August 24.

Plan to join us that day for family fun and a meal.

THANK YOU again for all of your efforts this past year.
