Arkansas Enterprises for the Developmentally Disabled, Inc. 3rd QUARTER 2011 F CE to F CE AEDD Celebrates its 40th Anniversary and Opening of a New Activity Center Our dream is now a reality! We are celebrating 40 years of providing services and programs for children and adults with developmental disabilities throughout the state of Arkansas. On August 23rd the doors of the new AEDD Multi-Purpose Activity Center opened and our dream became a reality! The 10,000 square foot Multi-Purpose Activity Center will provide a place for special events including monthly parties for the adults we serve, preschool graduation ceremonies and plays, basketball games, annual Prom, programs, parent and staff training and other activities. Over 300 friends, businesses, colleagues, government representatives, Little Rock and North Little Rock Chambers of Commerce, AEDD staff and many of our adult consumers attended our open house celebration. The event was sponsored by Centennial Bank, whose employee volunteers braved the over 100 degree temperature to grill hot dogs and hamburgers for lunch. We would like to thank everyone for their continuous support of our organization and, ultimately, the children and adults who benefit from our services. Commission on the Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities “The Gold Standard” We are very proud to announce that after three years of intensive preparation, and an on-site survey in August 2011, AEDD received its CARF certification. CARF is an independent, nonprofit accreditor of health and human services including: Aging Services ♦ Behavioral Health ♦ Child & Youth Services ♦ Business & Services Management Networks ♦ Vision & Medical Rehabilitation ♦ Community and Employment Services. Achieving this accreditation requires AEDD to commit to quality improvement, focus on the unique needs of each person we serve, and monitor the results of our services. Our organization must demonstrate a willingness to implement a series of rigorous and internationally recognized CARF standards and make a commitment to continuously improve to meet international standards of quality. The CARF accreditation is a sign of quality and is an important consideration for individuals making a decision for their choice of a service provider.

Craig Cloud worked tirelessly to help create the Arkansas Transit Association’s Worker’s Compensation Self-Insured Trust Fund. He actively recruited members to generate the one-million dollars in premiums needed to establish the fund.

When the Trust Fund began in 2006 Craig was elected Board of Trustees Chairman and has continuously served in that position. Today, under Craig’s leadership, the Trust Fund is fifty-nine members strong with more than 2.5 million dollars in premiums, covering almost 13,000 non-profit agency employees. AEDD is one of fifty-nine agencies that participates in this program.

Craig was presented an award of appreciation during the 2011 Arkansas Transit Association Conference for his hard work and determination in

securing new members and revenues for the Trust Fund.

Congratulations Craig!

“LIVING UNITED” On a hot Friday in July the temperature soared to over 100 degrees when over

thirty youth volunteers and adults from the Central Church of the Nazarene in

Tulsa, Oklahoma donated their time and talent to work on projects at our pre-

school. A playground was constructed for our toddler classrooms and rooms in

the school were given a fresh coat of paint. During 2011 over 300 hours of

community service was donated to AEDD because of our designation as a

United Way Agency.

THANK YOU VOLUNTEERS!

Yes, There is a Santa Claus!

And he doesn’t live any further than AEDD! Jim Hinson, retired CFO for AEDD, is still our resident Santa Claus. For many years, during the holidays, Jim dons his velvet suit, grows a gray beard, and brings joy to children and adults alike by listening to their Christmas wishes. Jim has generously agreed to let the AEDD Auxiliary “rent” him out this year for private home visits, school and church parties, and anywhere else there is in need of a visit from Santa! Money raised by Santa visits will benefit the AEDD Children’s Learning Center in North Little Rock that serves children ages six weeks to five years old with developmental disabilities. Santa’s rental rate is $100 per hour. To book a “Santa Reservation,” please call AEDD’s Central Office at 501-666-0246 One of our friendly elves will be glad to assist you! Call early to reserve your Santa visit!

FOOD FOR FAMILIES

Harvest Time

Digging, planting, growing, harvesting and eating are all part of the “Therapy Garden” at the Sammie Gail Sanders Children’s Learning Center

in North Little Rock. Home Depot generously donated supplies and

volunteers to build the garden in 2010. Planting and harvesting the garden is integrated into lesson plans at the preschool, which provides the

opportunity for the children to experience growing and eating “home grown” produce. The first crop of cucumbers were

harvested by our

students and enjoyed as an afternoon snack!
