The Super Duty CustomerYour customers can be classified by the way they use theirvehicles. In most cases, they fall into three general categories.

CommercialThese buyers need trucks that are able to do a specific job.Their reasons for buying may be just as specific, for example:• A functional and dependable vehicle with low acquisition cost• Low operating cost• High power and torque requirementsCommercial customers are expected to make up about 25 percent of the Super Duty market. Super Duty Pickups offerthese buyers a variety of weight classes, heavy-duty suspensions, powerful powertrains and a number of heavy-duty options.

Small BusinessThis category includes single-vehicle owners/operators orthose with fewer than five vehicles. Many of these buyers are“mixed use” operators, meaning that they use their vehicles forboth business and personal purposes. Small-business customersare expected to account for about 30 percent of the SuperDuty market. Because their work trucks may also double asfamily vehicles, these buyers may be especially interested incomfort and convenience features.

Heavy-duty RecreationalThese customers want a truck with enhanced towingcapabilities for a large travel trailer, multi-horse trailer orheavy boat. They’re also looking for trucks that can be usedas campers. These buyers are expected to make up about 45 percent of the Super Duty market. Because of their specialrequirements for towing, off-road use or extra passengers, these buyers may be especially interested in four-wheel drive,dual-rear-wheel models, or the 4-door SuperCab or Crew Cab.

Engine Specifics5.4L 3V SOHC TritonTM V-8The 5.4L 3V Triton V-8 is standard inall F-250/F-350 Pickups (6.8L 3VTriton V-10 is standard in F-350 DRWCrew Cab models).(1) The 5.4L 3Vengine provides more low-end torquethan ever before with over 80 percentof the engine’s peak torque available from as low as 1000rpm. It incorporates a combination of technologies to providethe added horsepower and torque so important to Super Dutybuyers who haul or tow. The technologies used include:• Three-valves-per-cylinder design — two intake valves and

one exhaust valve, which allow the engine to “breathe”almost as well as high-performance four-valve designs butwithout the additional weight and complexity

• Variable Camshaft Timing — optimizes the timing of theintake and exhaust valves during the combustion cycle. This allows the engine to deliver performance tailored tothe load applied, contributing to increased power andefficiency when hauling heavy loads

• Charge Motion Control Valves — specially shaped metalflaps located at the intake port that are used to speed upthe airflow and create a tumble effect in the combustionchamber, again contributing to more power and improvedefficiency

• Electronic Throttle Control — uses electronic sensors insteadof a mechanical linkage to operate the throttle. The sensorstake into account the driver’s input and the vehicle operatingconditions. The powertrain control module computes theoptimum throttle opening and fuel timing so as to providemaximum performance and seamless engine response

6.8L 3V SOHC Triton V-10The 6.8L 3V Triton V-10 is available inall Super Duty Pickup models (standardon F-350 DRW Crew Cab).(1) It producesbest-in-class horsepower and torquenumbers (362 horsepower, 52 morethan last year and 457 lb.-ft. of torque,32 lb.-ft. more than last year). The enginealso incorporates certain advanced technologies to allow it toproduce the impressive horsepower and torque figures. Thesetechnologies include:• Three-valves-per-cylinder design — two intake valves and

one exhaust valve, which allow the engine to “breathe”almost as well as high-performance four-valve designs butwithout the additional weight and complexity

• Short/Long Intake Runner design — the long runners areused during lower engine rpm operation to speed upairflow and provide maximum torque while the short runnerdesign is used at higher engine rpm to provide unrestrictedhigh-velocity air intake for efficient cylinder filling andmaximum power

6.0L Power Stroke® V-8 Turbo Diesel The available 6.0L Power Stroke V-8 turbodiesel is a four-valves-per-cylinder designfor outstanding torque and horsepower. The engine block and cylinder heads aremade of cast iron for unmatcheddurability and long-life. (Based onvehicles in operation from 1994–2004, the Power Stroke isthe longest-lasting diesel engine.) A separate, rigid bedplate isattached to the bottom of the engine block and additionalribbing structure is cast into the block to further enhance thedurability. The Power Stroke, like the Triton gasoline engines, incorporates anumber of advanced technologies to provide its remarkableperformance numbers. Some of these technologies are:• Hydraulic rail fuel injection and electrohydraulic Generation

2 injectors help reduce engine noise by way of precise fuelrate and timing control

• Charge air cooling through a large air-to-air intercoolerincreases air charge density

• An Electronic Variable Response Turbocharger (EVRTTM)which is able to change the position of the turbine bladesbased on engine demand for excellent low-speed responseas well as high-speed efficiency

The 6.0L Power Stroke engine also benefits owners withconvenient serviceability features designed into the engine:• The secondary fuel filter (4-micron filtration) is mounted on

top of the engine for maintenance ease• The oil filter is also located on top of the engine and uses a

cartridge rather than a canister design for easy, clean filterchanges and disposal

• The glow plugs, used to assist in cold engine starting, arelocated outside of the valve cover for more convenientservice if necessary

• The PowerCore air cleaner provides a large filter area foreffective removal of airborne contaminants

A Power Takeoff (PTO) Provision is an added benefit for customerswith specific auxiliary power needs. This enables upfitters to supply auxiliary power to hydraulicallydriven accessories such as dump bodies, sprayers, pumps, generators, etc.Transmission Power Takeoff Provision — This is option code 62Rand must be ordered to get a PTO gear and port with the TorqShift5-speed automatic transmission. The 6-speed manual overdrivetransmission has a PTO gear and port standard.Stationary Elevated Idle Control (SEIC) — This standard feature in allF-250/F-350 models provides the “throttle-kicker,” replacing theAuxiliary Idle Control Kit in prior model years. It consists of strategyembedded in the Powertrain Control Module (PCM), and a set ofblunt-cut wires to command it. The selling dealer will need to obtainthe customer interface (e.g., PTO controller or switch) from theaftermarket. NOTE: Option 66S, “Upfitter Switches,” may be usedas a PTO switch.

SEIC provides engine speeds of 910 to 2400 rpm for 5.4L and 6.8Lgas engines, and 1200 to 2400 rpm for the 6.0L diesel engine. Italso automatically locks the torque converter providing power to thePTO gear for the TorqShift automatic transmission when the operatorturns on the PTO switch. Instructions to upfitters for completing theSEIC/PTO circuitry are detailed in the 2005 Model Year Light TruckBody Builders Layout Book, found at www.fleet.ford.com/truckbbasRefer to the latest Dealer Ordering Guide for model andengine restrictions.

Transmission Specifics

Power Takeoff (PTO) Provision Specifics

Manual Shift with Manual Locking Hubs• Standard on F-250/F-350 4x4 Pickups• Simple, reliable design that is highly regarded by serious

off-roaders• To engage the 4x4 system the hublock selectors must be in the

LOCK position, then the desired drive range is selected on thetransfer case

• The floor-mounted transfer case shift lever is used to movebetween available drive settings: 2H (2WD High), 4H (4WDHigh), N (Neutral) and 4L (4WD Low)

• When the hublocks are returned to the FREE position, the driveaxle components do not rotate while driving, which reduceswear and frictional drag

• This a part-time 4x4 system designed to provide enhancedtraction on reduced traction surfaces only. Operating on normalor high-traction surfaces can result in transfer case damage, increased tire wear and decreased fuel economy

Electronic Shift-on-the-fly System• Optional on all F-250/F-350 4x4 Pickups• Easy-to-use rotary control switch mounted in the instrument

panel used to select drive settings• Electric motor actually shifts the transfer case into selected

drive setting• Front hublock selectors are marked with AUTO and LOCK.

Driver can manually LOCK hubs if preferred, but the PulseVacuum Hublock (PVH) design engages the front hubs, providing virtually silent operation

• The PVH system optimizes fuel economy because all front drivelinecomponents are disconnected at the wheels when the system is in2WD operation

• This a part-time 4x4 system designed to provide enhancedtraction on reduced traction surfaces only. Operating on normalor high-traction surfaces can result in transfer case damage, increased tire wear and decreased fuel economy

4x4 System Specifics

6-speed Manual OverdriveTransmission• Standard with all Super Duty

Pickup engines• First five gears provide

optimum close-ratioperformance

• Overdrive sixth gear reducesengine rpm at highwayspeeds, contributing to vehiclefuel economy and quietoperation

• Features a standardtransmission cooler

• Standard power takeoff (PTO)port provided on the left-handside of transmission case

TorqShiftTM 5-speed Automatic OverdriveTransmission• Originally designed and developed to be

used with the high torque output of the 6.0LPower Stroke® diesel, this robust transmissionis optional on all Super Duty Pickups withgasoline or diesel engines

• Torque converter design maximizes low-speedtorque output

• Large fluid pump provides superior lubricationand cooling

• Robust, precision-engineered gears and clutchmaterial contribute to durability

• Pure electronic shift controls work with theElectronic Throttle Control of the engine tooptimize shifts and vehicle performance andresponsiveness

• Selectable Tow/Haul mode uses sophisticatedelectronic controls to sense towing andhauling demands and adjusts its operation tomeet them. When hauling a heavy load ortrailer the Tow/Haul mode reduces gearhunting, improves power delivery and evenuses engine braking to help control vehiclespeed when descending hills

Capability Specifics

Key FeaturesFor 2005 Super Duty is all about capability and getting thejob done. No matter if it’s for commercial or recreational use,Super Duty has the strength to handle the toughest assignments.A wide range of towing capability, increased payload capacityand a new variable Gross Vehicle Weight Rating strategy makeSuper Duty the truck of choice.Towing Capacity(1) — The maximum conventional towingcapacity is 12,500 lbs. for Single Rear Wheel (SRW) modelsand F-350 Dual Rear Wheel (DRW) models with the 5.4L 3VTritonTM V-8 engine. Maximum conventional towing capacity is15,000 lbs. for F-350 Dual Rear Wheel (DRW) models witheither the 6.0L Power Stroke® V-8 or the 6.8L Triton V-10engines when the Built Ford Tough 15K Trailer Hitch Receiveris ordered (15K hitch receiver comes with a 2.5-inch to 2.0-inch adapter with 12,500-lb. capacity).

– The maximum fifth-wheel towing capacity is 17,000 lbs.for properly equipped F-350 Single Rear Wheel (SRW)models, the Best-in-Class rating

Payload Capacity — The majority of payload capacities haveincreased over previous models (due to the variable GVWRstrategy that enables the heavier 6.8L and 6.0L engines tooffer similar, if not higher maximum payloads than the lighterweight 5.4L engine, please refer to the weight ratings in theSpecifications section for additional information). Maximumpayload this year is a best-in-class 5800 lbs. on an F-3504x2 DRW pickup model equipped with the 6.8L Triton V-10 engine.Gross Vehicle Weight Rating — The variable strategy hasbeen developed for 2005 Super Duty models to allowcustomers to specifically build their trucks for their intendeduse. This strategy takes advantage of chassis improvementslike the stronger frame and best-in-class braking system topreserve the payload capability on trucks with higher curbweights. The GVWRs range from 8800 lbs. all the way up tobest-in-class 13,000 lbs. on select models.

Because 85 to 90 percent of your Super Duty customers use their trucksfor towing, the standard Trailer Towing Package is a great selling point.Be sure that your customers understand the towing capabilities of theirvehicle, and warn them against overloading. Explain that Dual RearWheel (DRW) vehicles are designed for greater towing stability, notnecessarily for increased capacity. With the 15K hitch receiver, DRWalso offers greater maximum trailer capacity. DRW models areespecially useful for customers who want to tow a fifth-wheel trailer.

Key FeaturesStandard Trailer Towing PackageStandard on all F-250/F-350 Pickup models, the TrailerTowing Package contains the following equipment:• 7-wire harness with relays• 7-way/4-way connector• Trailer brake wiring kit• Rear stabilizer bar (4x2 DRW only)For additional towing information, please refer to the 2005 RV & Trailer Towing Guide found behind the 2005 TruckSource Book towing tab or the vehicle’s Owner’s Guide, or go to the F-250/F-350 Pickup Brand Exchange at:www.fleet.ford.com/

TowCommandTM SystemSince roughly 90 percent of Super Duty customers tow withtheir trucks, putting together a “system” to make this aspect oftowing easier was a high priority. The TowCommand System, along with the upgraded braking system standard on all SuperDuty Pickup models and the Tow/Haul function of the TorqShifttransmission, does just that by grouping the features andoptions that will make towing easier and enjoyable for yourcustomers. The driver selectable Tow/Haul function is able toreduce gear search on steep uphill grades or in hilly terrainand provides added vehicle speed control while descendinggrades. The system includes:• TowCommand Integrated Trailer Brake Controller• Manual telescoping trailer towing mirrors with manual glass (XL)• Manual telescoping trailer towing mirrors with power/heated

glass and integrated clearance lights/turn signals (XLT/Lariat)• Requires TorqShiftTM 5-speed automatic overdrive

transmission with Tow/Haul function

TowCommand Integrated Trailer Brake ControllerThe industry’s first-in-class fully integrated trailer brakecontroller offers smooth operation and control featuresunmatched by any aftermarket controller, and it’s factory-installed and comes warranted by Ford Motor Company The benefits include:• The controller uses actual braking pressure, measured inside

the truck’s master cylinder, to calculate how much brakingforce to apply. This information is sent to the trailer brakesin real time so that the braking of the truck and the trailerare matched, helping to provide smooth, controlled stops

• Since the trailer brake controller is fully integrated, not onlyinto the instrument panel but into the truck’s onboardcomputer, this is the first and only controller to be able toadapt its output based on the status of the Anti-lock BrakingSystem (ABS). When the ABS module senses the towvehicle’s brakes are experiencing low traction conditions, the controller’s trailer braking strategy is altered tocompensate for traction conditions as well

• Initial setup and adjustment of the trailer brake controller issimple and intuitive. If the trailer electrical connections aregood, a green indicator will illuminate in the display. Thedriver then adjusts the GAIN control to correspond with theweight of the trailer. Further adjustment may be required iftrailer weight or surface conditions change. Refer to theOwner’s Guide for additional information

Snowplow Installation/Minimum Required and Recommended Equipment cont’dCompleted Vehicle WeightThe weight of the completed vehicle with equipment installed (and second unit body, if applicable) must not exceed the Front GAWR, Rear GAWR or GVWR established by Ford, with consideration for the driver and one front-seat passenger. If sufficient weight is added such that the completed vehicle with a driver and more than one passenger would exceed Front GAWR, Rear GAWR or GVWR, it is the responsibility of the equipment installer to notify the customer of the appropriate use restrictions. (i.e., That the user should limit occupancy of the vehicle to the driver and one passenger while the equipment is installed.) The addition of ballast weight, placed rearward of the rear axle, may be required to prevent front end overloading or exceeding Front GAWR. If required, the ballast weight must be securely attached to the vehicle. For Ford completed vehicles of 10,000 lbs. GVWR or less, the weight of permanently attached equipment must not exceed the Total Accessory Reserve Capacity (T.A.R.C.) as specified on the Safety Compliance Certification Label. Permanently attached equipment includes the snowplow frame-mounting hardware and does not include the removable snowplow blade assembly. Exceeding T.A.R.C. will require recertification.

Front End Wheel Alignment and Headlamp AimFront end wheel alignment (toe) and headlamp aim may require readjustment after installation of equipment and is the responsibility of the equipment installer. Failure to reset front wheel alignment may cause premature uneven tire wear. If required, reset to chassis manufacturer’s specifications found in the Ford Shop Manual.

Electrical ConnectionsInstallation of any inductive load devices (i.e., electric motors, electric clutches for clutch pumps, etc.) MUST NOT be connected to OEM wiring or fuse panels. Power for such devices should be taken directly from the battery or starter motor relay power terminal. Control of these devices should be achieved via relays. No direct current path should exist between OEM wiring and the installed load that is not filtered by the battery. These recommendations are intended to reduce or eliminate any induced reverse voltage into the OEM circuitry.

WarrantyThe Normal Ford New Vehicle Limited Warranty applies to vehicles with snowplows installed in accordance with these guidelines. Consult your Ford dealer or the Owner’s Guide for any further questions.

BlockerBeamTM

A metal crossmember called a “BlockerBeam” is included below the front bumper on Super Duty vehicles. Warning: Removing the BlockerBeam without installing snowplow attachment hardware may affect airbag deployment in a crash. Do not operate the truck unless either the BlockerBeam or snowplow attachment hardware is installed on the vehicle.
