In Belgium, people eat Belgian fries. We enjoy and preach the pleasure-loving Belgian lifestyle ourselves.

Extremismeans
Buiten-gewoonor
Extra-ordinary
BUITEN / EXTRAOur tools are built to be used outside. They are weather-resistant. That doesn’t mean they can’t be placed in an interior space. For example, many offices use our tools for togetherness for their desks, lunch areas and break-out.
GEWOON / ORDINARYThe literal meaning of “buitengewoon” is “out of the ordinary”. We make innovative new stuff, but it is ordinary at the same time: Our tools don’t need to shout: ‘look at me!’ They have to be simple, modest and honest.

Westhoek, ‘West Corner’, is where Extremis (and most of its employees) was born and raised. This is the most rural part of Belgium, where people use words like ‘Mohow zeh’ to express wonder while the rest of the Belgians haven’t got a clue what they are trying to say.

At a time when communication is ruled by mails, mobile
phones and social media, we believe that we need to provide solutions to improve real live face-to-face communication
wherever we find it, as we are convinced that good quality
communication leads to better understanding and a healthy
state of mind.

H O W T O D E S I G NA tool for togetherness
“Don’t make anything, unless it is both necessary and useful... and if it is, don’t hesitate to make it beautiful.” This Shaker community quote is our rule number one. Our main concern is to solve problems, not just to produce beautiful objects. And if a problem has already been solved, we need to add value at some point, otherwise, it has no reason to exist. For example, Walrus has an everlasting hide, and it stores warm and cosy blankets inside the backrests. So there are no ugly covers that ruin your terrace view. Bringing comfort outside has never been so easy!
Design is human! It’s all about the people and the interaction between them, isn’t it? According to an American study, parents and children currently only spend an average of fifteen minutes together each day...
It is our mission to improve the quality of their togetherness and to keep it going (even when the glasses are empty).

isHow to design a tool for togetherness
Designed to fit its purpose. Every design decision has a specific reason: Selecting the right materials increases user comfort. Take a look at Gargantua. The central part of the tabletop is made of perforated steel, but the edges of the table that come into contact with the body are made of wood, which feels warmer. The robustly constructed feet are made of galvanised steel, but the seats are wooden. Once again, contact with the body determines the choice of material... Furthermore, it is no coincidence that the table legs are angled. This allows for enough space and distance to easily adjust the moveable seats to different heights.

1/2 SHEET The perforated central stainless steel sheet is exactly half the size of a standard sheet, which means that none of the material goes to waste during production.
USE IT WISELYThe slats for the benches are made from the leftovers of the wooden arches from the tabletop. This means that wood wastage is kept to a minimum.

nA quick look at Gargantua
Keep your ecological footprint to a minimum. From the very first sketch, the idea was to design products that would last. Not only technically, but also esthetically: we do not design fashionable items you will want to get rid off after only two years. A tool for togetherness must be a convenient product that creates a convivial atmosphere, that you can pass on to the next generations, including the good memories that come with it.
The desire to be sustainable influences every design and production decision. Applying quality materials ethically and wisely is top priority. We aim to find solid materials that look as good or even better as time passes, with minimal maintenance if possible: galvanised steel may not be the most beautiful material, but it is ideal for outdoor use. It is resistant to corrosion and lasts for a long time without any traces of wear.

1 9 9 4When it all started
It began in a wooden garden shed that Dirk Wynants built with his father (a carpenter), grandfather and two of his brothers. The metal elements of Gargantua were supplied by his brother-in-law Karel and his company. Dirk and his father sawed tree trunks into planks themselves to make the wooden parts. Our first piece of furniture, Gargantua, was a result of Dirk’s background in carpentry and his in-laws’ knowledge of metalworking.
This shed was somewhere in the depths of the Flemish countryside, in the rural Westhoek region, but the company decided to go international right from the start. The second table they ever made was sold in France.

Extemporeby Arnold Merckx
Gargantua was the very first design furniture on the market that was intended for long-term outdoor use. Its refined yet robust appearance and indestructibility were in sharp contrast to what you usually found in people’s gardens back then.
Of course you can’t base a brand on a picnic table; Dirk Wynants thought in his role as a marketing man and commissioned the designer Arnold Merckx to create an entire garden range. It became a series that is still seen as “pioneering” to this day, heralding the beginning of design brands that also focused on outdoor furniture.

An iconic Extremis design came about when Dirk Wynants called in Xavier Lust to help him design Picnik. To add strength to this two-seater with a table, simply consisting of a single, folded aluminium plate, the technique was applied that Lust introduced with his design for “Le Banc”.

2 0 0 4Extremis’ first magazine,
‘noozn’The Kortrijk Biennale Interieur in 2004 did not just feature Donuts, Arthur, Qrater and Woodstock. Along with these new products, Extremis came up with its first magazine. Ten years after the company had been founded, it was high time to introduce the Extremis team and everything that was going on behind the scenes. The magazine was packed with travel tales, trend predictions and the legendary column “When in West Flanders / ToeToeznt”. Given our international clientele, this led to hilarious situations at sales meetings.
Lesson 1 :
We shall start our series of West Flemish lessons with a number of typical situations and useful words or expressions.
This time: a visit to the restaurant. Here you have the English text with the West Flemish dialect translation. There is also a pronunciation guide to the most important words or expressions. These words and phrases will come in really handy in West Flanders next time you visit. Here it goes. Good luck!

And here’s another illustration of our international character: Extremis has now been present without interruption at the most influential design fairs all over Europe. The Kortrijk Biennale Interieur is really useful because it caters to our home market, but with almost 85% exports, the foreign trade fairs are gaining significance. Milan, Cologne, New York, Chicago, Singapore, London, Paris, Tokyo... we are bringing our tools for togetherness to a design-loving audience all around the world.

lounging outdoors
Extremis has launched its first lounge furniture for a large group of up to 20 people in the form of the Behive, a contraction of bee hive and behave. Dirk Wynants found his inspiration travelling around in Morocco and Istanbul, where people recline to drink mint tea or enjoy a water pipe together. The piece radiates togetherness, and is wonderfully relaxing when you have friends over to visit.

As i f i t was yesterday
2 0 1 0Hopper, inspired by hops & beer fests
2010 was the year of Hopper. The hop fields around Dirk Wynants’ new home in Poperinge, the only hop-growing region in Belgium, inspired him to create
a picnic table around which the pickers would have the perfect place to celebrate the end of the harvest. So what is the secret? A long row of tables
with benches, a field of hops and our own beer. Need we say more?

Presenting Marina, by Fattorini + Rizzini + Partners
It was obvious that the focus lied on the Marina line in Milan 2012, as we had worked with Italian designers for the first time. The entire fair stand was built around the ‘Marina’ theme: Extremis’ products were on display in an atmosphere of sea, sand and sunshine. The name ‘Marina’ was chosen specifically to conjure up a nautical ambiance and for its international appeal. To emphasize the maritime character of the fair stand, it appealed to all five senses: visitors could taste the ice cream of ‘Gelateria Marina’ whilst smelling (something our crew really had to rack their brains over) and hearing the soothing ocean in the background.

In 2015 all the transformations on our company premises were completed. Anyone who visited the old buildings will agree: it doesn’t look anything at all like it used to. The place really needed extensive renovation work, with Extremis applying the same methods and ethics as the ones we use to develop our products, with a focus on ecology and efficiency.

Designer interv iew: Dirk Wynants
D I R KW Y N A N T S
Extremis’ main designer and founder
Thanks to this attitude, Extremis soon became a worldwide renowned design collection. Dirk’s designs already won many awards and so did his company for design management, general management and export. Since its establishment in 1994 designer Dirk Wynants has succeeded in getting his company a top position on the international design scene. The fact that he never follows the mainstream, but always brings innovative and progressive design, certainly contributes to this success story. Today Dirk shares his experience at the Shanghai Institute of Visual Arts, where he also runs a design studio.
Dirk Wynants founded his company Extremis in 1994. He is still the full owner and president of the board of directors, but gives priority to designing and art direction. Next to that, he is managing director of his own design studio Dirk Wynants Design Works.
Dirk established Extremis for the realization of his own designs. The Gargantua garden table was his first ever Extremis product. The further development of Extremis as a company (and a brand) was actually based on the success of this first creation.Innovation, superior quality materials, a keen eye for functionality and ecology are part of the credo.
![Page 62: Extremis catalogue](https://reader038.fdocuments.net/reader038/viewer/2022102802/579075dd1a28ab6874b698ac/html5/thumbnails/62.jpg)

isDesigner interv iew : Dirk Wynants
Why did you become a designer?
Do you become a designer or are you one? Whether or not you are a designer has to do with developing many skills and interests, but above all it is an attitude: never accepting that something cannot be done better.
What do you see as the task of a designer and how do you experience the combination of entrepreneur and designer?
A designer must at least have the ambition to improve the quality of life, and once again, here, it is a question of finding a balance between meaningful innovation, function, ecology, aesthetics and so on… and economics as well. I believe the things that have to do with entrepreneurialism have also made me a better designer. That does not make it any less difficult to combine the two.
In fashion, the major designers have also been designing for brands like H&M for years. How is this evolving in the furniture design sector?
The focus on low prices really is very difficult to reconcile with sustainability. In both fashion and the furniture sector, designers are sometimes used to conceal that fact.
Which places, surroundings, cities etc. inspire you?
The energy of a big city is particularly inspiring, but I couldn’t do without the peace of the countryside either. For me, it is mainly a question of finding a balance in which I can still constantly discover new things.
![Page 63: Extremis catalogue](https://reader038.fdocuments.net/reader038/viewer/2022102802/579075dd1a28ab6874b698ac/html5/thumbnails/63.jpg)

What are the obstacles or major challenges you experience in designing for Extremis?
I mainly tend to see opportunities. Of course that is also the best definition of a problem in itself.
What do you still want to achieve in the future?
I hope that I will become a wise man one day, and there are various aspects to that. For that to happen, of course, I will have to stay healthy and active for a long time, because I will need to gain a lot more experience before I become wise. This will also allow me to continue realising my ambition to pass knowledge on, which I feel is both an obligation for every good designer and a very enriching experience in itself that is necessary to become a wise man. My greatest fear, however, is of becoming an irritating old bore, and this is the only way to avoid it...
What is your favourite hotel, restaurant or bar?
I could name lots of fantastic places, since I have the good fortune to get almost everywhere. But to be honest, my favourite hotel, restaurant and bar are simply my own home.

Fun fact
According to an American study, parents and children
currently only spend an average of 15 minutes together
per day. To improve the quality of this togetherness,
Dirk Wynants wanted to create a table where children could comfortably sit at the same height as the adults. This was to enable better
communication.

Abachus is a high table with a little extra: when standing up, you can lean against one of its six arms, providing the minimal comfort you need to honour Bacchus, the god of wine, with your

Look around you at a party or reception and you will very often see guests grabbing a chair to sit down or just to
lean against the backrest. So if you combine an ordinary
cocktail table and this desire for support, you end up with
the blueprint for Abachus: a high-top table with a real
bonus. Six arms to be precise, against which you can lean
comfortably.

Anker
Sailors drop the anchor when they have reached
destination, a place to stay. Sitting around Anker means touching base with friends or
family. Anchoring is about getting grip on what’s truly
important in life, and rather disconnecting from the daily rush at work. Anker’s much
more than just a tool for mooring a ship.

How to keep your wood in shape?
Exposure to sun and rain will gradually change the colour of the wood to silvery grey,
and also roughen the surface. If you want somewhat retain
their original colour, you should oil them about once a year. Remember wood is a
living matter, and by choosing this material, you accept its sensitivity to splits, cracks,
(grease) stain absorption, etc. Treat this beauties with care
and love!

A desi re for great s impl ic i ty
It’s easy to illustrate the Picnik idea using a simple sheet of
paper to create a tabletop with benches attached. One
f lat aluminium sheet is transformed into a picnic
table, thanks to a number of strategic incisions and folds.
The basic shape is exactly half the size of a standard 3 x 1.5
metre aluminium sheet. Apart from the saw cuts and minimal rounding off, material wastage
is nil.

A R T H U RWith a touch of
Guinevere’s elegance
How do you fit a tabletop with a diameter of up to 2.4 metres through a normal doorway? Dirk Wynants designed the table like a puzzle, with eight, ten or twelve identical puzzle pieces
combining to make a circular tabletop.
© designed by Dirk Wynants
![Page 254: Extremis catalogue](https://reader038.fdocuments.net/reader038/viewer/2022102802/579075dd1a28ab6874b698ac/html5/thumbnails/254.jpg)

A table of f r iendship
“Its circular shape reminds us of the myth of King Arthur.
Sitting together around the table as equals, without hierarchy, is a
timeless social need”
Thanks to the round shape and providing extra accessibility with the rotating ‘Lazy Susan’ in the middle, Arthur is synonymous with functionality, encounter, communication and hospitality.
Ecological and economic use of material. Even the smallest car can deliver this large table.

Extremis has turned the idea of outdoor seating completely
inside out, by making the sofa in a cover material, and
covering it with sofa material to make a sleek, weatherproof sofa that always looks great. An ingenious storage pouch
in the back of the Walrus hides a foldout blanket and a thick cushion to provide the softness, comfort and touch that feel best in contact with

The intimacy and versatility of a yacht’s cockpit inspired

“All the technical parts that open and close the screen are above the UV-resistant fabric”
Inumbrina is a lighter version of Inumbra and the difference between these two parasols lies in how they are opened. Inumbrina opens by an ingenious pulley and rope system and it turns out to be really easy, and even faster!

Romeo & Juliet adds some green to an often colourless urban or industrial setting. The bench is made of long, rectangular strips of wood. Two
holes in the seat create room for large flowerpots.

Qrater is a campfire dish made of weathering steel, a type of steel that can be used in the
garden as well as in open spaces. It only gets rusty on the surface, leaving the rest of the material intact. This means Qrater can stay
outdoors all year round.

Woodstock consists of a firewood rack and matching cart. You can fill the rack with a
considerable number of logs and then transport them effortlessly to wherever you want.

Woodstock is not only about great functionality. Like most
other Extremis products, it also offers great environmental efficiency. As the cart is made
of the leftovers from the rack, hardly anything goes to waste. Furthermore, a smart
packaging design ensures a very compact transport
volume.

The adjective ‘serpentine’ refers to the curve of a serpent, a snake, and in the case of our outdoor shower, it is only an extension of a watering hose.
