RIVALRY RESUMES

After months of speculation, mock line-ups and, of course, all those leaked teams, NSW Blues fans finally learned the names of the men who will look to steal back State of Origin glory from those pesky Queenslanders, beginning in

Sydney this Wednesday night.NSW coach Laurie Daley unveiled a

19-man Blues line-up at The Star Casino on Monday morning, which included five fresh new faces who will make their Origin debuts at ANZ Stadium next week.

After being hammered in the 2015 series decider 52-6, Daley and his panel of selec-tors were left with no choice but to make some much-needed changes, with a look to the future also in mind.

Among the new faces to line-up for the

Blues in Origin I – Penrith captain Matt Moylan and winger Josh Mansour, boom Dragons forward Tyson Frizell, Rabbitohs premiership-winning halfback Adam Reynolds and versatile Manly recruit Dylan Walker.

Speaking at the Blues squad announce-ment on Monday afternoon, NSW Origin captain Paul Gallen admitted he wasn’t surprised to see so many new faces wear-ing the Blues attire.

“I’m not surprised at all, I thought there would always be changes, there was no doubt about that,” he said.

“The boys who have been picked as debutants have been playing very well at club level, and I don’t think anyone could say that they don’t deserve their shot.”

Gallen admitted that the beating the Blues were handed at Suncorp Stadium in Game 3 last year was the catalyst for a raft of changes which saw Origin stalwarts Mitchell Pearce, Ryan Hoffman, Beau Scott and Trent Merrin all get the chop.

“We’re not hiding from the fact we were

embarrassed up there but there were always going to be changes,” he said.

“It’s shame those guys aren’t here, the majority of them were part of the winning 2014 series, they were terrific guys and a great part of our team.”

NSW coach Laurie Daley echoed his skip-per’s comments on moving forward with some new ‘blue blood’.

“That’s the difficult part of the job because you become so close to them… it’s always hard but they cop it on the chin and have to keep working hard in case the opportunity to play Origin presents itself again,” he said.

NSW will go into Origin I with a new fullback in Matt Moylan, halves pairing in James Maloney and Adam Reynolds, and an updated backline featuring power-house winger Josh Mansour on the wing and Josh Dugan in the centres.

The Blues will also unleash a strong and dynamic forward pack, buoyed by the Origin return of Greg Bird and the debut of Tyson Frizell.

Returning for the Maroons are all the familiar, champion faces like Thurston, Cronk, Inglis, Boyd, Smith and Parker along with two newcomers in winger Corey Oates and centre Justin O’Neill.

Origin I is always a close battle that goes right down to wire – take last year’s 11-10 win to Queensland for example. I think if the NSW debutants can overcome their nerves early, they’ll out-enthuse Queens-land to victory. Tip: NSW by 7.

VALUEINCREASES

with the Masked Panther

» I’m hearing that the Office of Liquor, Gaming and Racing has finished looking into the sudden departure of former Pan-thers Group CEO Warren Wilson, with no action likely. The Panthers have swiftly moved on from the Wilson era at the club, with Brian Fletcher and Corey Payne now looking after things at an executive level.

» There is no question that Josh Man-sour’s selection in the New South Wales State of Origin team this week will increase his value in the market. The Panthers have tabled an offer to the off-contract star but it appears Mansour was waiting until the Origin team was picked before deciding to take it up, or head back to the negotiation table. I’m tipping it’ll be back to negotiations, but the Panthers should win the race for his signature – they’re very keen to retain him.

» Terrible news for centre Peta Hiku with his season over following an ACL injury against the Titans last Sunday. Hiku was stretchered from the field early in the sec-ond half and was clearly in considerable pain. Unfortunately, he wasn’t the only injury out of the loss to the Titans with James Fisher-Harris suffering a broken thumb. Hiku’s injury most likely opens the door for the return of Waqa Blake to first grade.

» Joel Romelo, who made a cameo ap-pearance with the Panthers during the 2009 NRL season, is back playing football again. His life took a turn for the worse when he was jailed on drugs charges, but the 27-year-old is now playing footy in Darwin. Romelo was seen as a potential representative player but his career never really got started. He played three games for the Panthers in 2009 before joining

the Bulldogs, where he played 23 games over four seasons. He then played two matches for Melbourne in 2014 before disappearing from the NRL scene.

» Anyone who follows Jamie Soward on social media knows how much he loves his girlfriend Madi (he tells us regularly, in case we forget). Apparently Madi has scored even more brownie points by surprising Sowie with a trip to Boston, the home of his beloved Boston Celtics. He’s heading to the US for a holiday in October.

» The Panthers last week confirmed the signing of forward Chris Grevsmuhl until the end of the 2018 season. Grevsmuhl, 23, has linked up with the Panthers after obtaining a release from the final year of his contact with the South Sydney Rab-bitohs. “I’m excited to join the Panthers and can’t wait to pull the boots on and get started,” Grevsmuhl said. “The Panthers have developed a very strong team that never gives in and that’s what I’m most excited about. The chance to train at the Panthers Rugby League Academy and improve my game with the coaching staff here is a great opportunity for me.”

» Phil Gould rarely speaks about Ben Alexander’s 1992 car accident and the impact the youngster’s death had on the club, the community and him person-ally. But in a brilliant interview with the Sydney Morning Herald’s Andrew Webster last weekend, Gus spoke openly about the crash that tore Penrith apart. “Every time I drive to Penrith I think about it,” Gould said. “That part of my life was extremely difficult. I think about it every day to be honest. It’s hard to talk about those days because we went from the

highs to the lows very quickly. We won the club’s first ever premiership then lost a special person in Ben in tragic circum-stances the very next year. I loved Ben. I was very close to Ben. The damage it did to everyone at Penrith, not just his family and close friends, was enormous.”

» Greg Bird had the last laugh last week-end after the Titans defeated the Panthers 28-24, but it was certainly a tense after-noon for the Blues star. He was booed by the Panthers’ faithful as he left the field for a concussion test just prior to half-time, and shared what appeared to be a few nasty words with ground announcer Scott McRae on his way into the sheds.

» Panthers coach Anthony Griffin was

short but strong with his assessment of last Sunday’s performance against the Ti-tans. “I’m disappointed. We let ourselves down, we let our members and fans down. It’s not what we’re about,” he said.

» Things got a little murky for Panthers hooker James Segeyaro this week with revelations that he joined Corey Norman and Junior Paulo in dining out with a former Nomad bikie and an accused crim-inal before Norman was allegedly caught in possession of unknown pills last Friday night. While there is no suggestion that Segeyaro has done anything wrong, he has been issued with a ‘consorting’ warning by police given the company he’s keeping. Segeyaro shares a home with Norman, who plays for the Eels.

When Matt Moylan’s name was read out as a member of Laurie Daley’s NSW Blues squad on Monday morning, it was almost a year to the day that the popular Penrith fullback went down with

a season-ending injury.Last year Moylan’s name was also tossed

around in the Origin ring as a bolter for the 2015 series but the ankle injury he suffered against the Eels in Round 12 ruined any chance of him taking part.

But a year is a long time in footy. After a slow start to the season with a

troublesome back injury, the Panthers captain and St Clair Comets junior found

form, is fit and firing again, and ready to take on his greatest challenge.

“Playing footy growing up you want to play at the highest level and, to have that opportunity this week and the challenge ahead, I’m very excited about. It’s going to be an honour to pull on the sky blue jersey on Wednesday,” Moylan said.

Like Panthers teammate and fellow Blues debutant Josh Mansour, Moylan received a call from Penrith’s football manager on Sunday night to let him in on the good news.

Despite what looked to be some apparent nerves during Penrith’s heartbreaking loss to the Titans on Sunday afternoon, Moylan said he hasn’t been thinking about his impending Origin selection.

“Personally, no, if you read into all the speculation and let it get to you, it’s prob-ably going to affect your performance,” he said.

“To get out there and play a good game you’ve just got to do what you normally do and let that talk and speculation go by.

“I think you’ve just got to go out there and put your best foot forward and the rest is in the selectors’ hands.”

Moylan is one of five new faces to be chosen in the NSW team for the Origin opener at ANZ Stadium with a number

of familiar names of Origins past includ-ing Beau Scott, Ryan Hoffman, Mitchell Pearce and Penrith’s Trent Merrin given the flick to accommodate the new blood.

Moylan said he’s expecting to get a lot out of his first Origin experience.

“There’s a few new faces and that’s going to bring a lot of energy and enthusiasm to the squad,” he said.

It wasn’t that long ago that Josh Mansour and Panthers teammate Matt Moylan were a bunch of unknowns, playing park footy with the Windsor Wolves in front of virtu-ally no one.

In less than a week, the Penrith pair will pull on the famous sky

blue jumper for the very first time, and be greeted by 80,000 screaming fans in rugby league’s greatest arena.

Speaking with Extra Time at Monday’s NSW Blues Origin announcement, 26-year-old Mansour reminisced at just how far he and fellow ‘wolf pack’ member Matt Moylan had come in just a few short years.

“I’ve shared a long journey with Matty… we started out at the Windsor Wolves and pretty much made our NRL debuts together, and now we are here,” he said in disbelief.

“It’s been an unbelievable ride and I’m very excited to be a part of it all with him.”

Mansour’s name had been tossed around in mock Origin squads for years but he has always remained just out of calculations.

After enduring an uphill battle with injury in 2015, Mansour came out on top and, last Sunday night, heard the words he’d been dreaming of for so long – “Sauce, you’ve made Origin”.

Upon hearing those four words from

Penrith’s football manager on his way home from Pepper Stadium, the power-house winger couldn’t wait to tell his mum and of course his fiancé, Daniella.

“It was a bit of a mood changer, that’s for sure,” Mansour admitted.

“Obviously I was disappointed with the loss against the Titans on the bell – that really hurt – but when I got that call on the way home, that brought my mood back up.”

Mansour will turn 26 during the Origin series and admits he’s pumped for what’s ahead.

“It’s so surreal… it’s been a massive achievement for myself and I’m definitely very excited,” he said.

“I can’t wait to get into Origin camp with the boys and be part of this brotherhood.”

After not missing a single Origin series on television as a kid, the soon-to-be Blues debutant expressed his excitement at finally being able to experience the legend that is State of Origin footy for himself.

“It’s the pinnacle of rugby league and I think the physicality of the game really excites me,” he said.

“I think that’s one of my strengths and I can’t wait to just run out there and get amongst it.”

Mansour will partner ex-teammate and best friend Michael Jennings in Laurie Daley’s new-look Blues backline that also features fellow newcomer Matt Moylan and former bad boys Josh Dugan and Blake Ferguson.

Mansour has previously represented both Australia and Lebanon.

with Brad Drew

The New South Wales Blues have announced their team for the opening game of the 2016 State of Origin series, and as anticipated, there were a number of new faces selected in the side to face off against the Maroons next Wednesday night at ANZ Stadium.

For what seems like months, the make-up of Laurie’s Daley’s side has been speculated upon, and unlike previous

years, there were very few guaranteed selections.

Matt Moylan won out in the battle of the number ones holding off incredibly strong competition from the Cowboys’ Lachlan Coote. Josh Mansour secured a spot on the wing, Dylan Walker takes up a position on the bench as a utility player, whilst Adam Reynolds will wear the cov-eted number 7 jersey for the first time.

In regards to tactics, coach Daley has opted to go with size and power on his bench and it would appear that he has laid out the challenge to the Maroons forward pack and, along with Paul Gallen declaring that this year’s series will be his last, I believe NSW have got the team to get the job done.

While there are certainly a number of players who have been extremely

unlucky not to be selected for the open-ing game and, yes, we all have our own opinions on who should and shouldn’t have been selected for the Blues, it is now time to put our thoughts to one side and get behind our state to secure a victory in Origin I of the 2016 series.

So buy some beer over the weekend, or-der the pizzas early Wednesday afternoon and sit back and enjoy the game!

LOTS OFNEW CONCEPTS

with Panthers CEO Corey Payne

What a whirlwind my first couple of weeks have been since officially joining the Panthers!

I am thoroughly enjoying immersing myself in the community, meeting our members, sponsors and stakeholders, and getting as much feedback as pos-sible. I want to know what the Panthers do well and in what areas the club can improve.

I met many of you at Sunday’s game against the Titans, and at the post-match fan function in TCs Sports Bar, and I thank you all for your ideas and suggestions.

Hopefully you noticed some of the little changes that have already been implemented on game day such as the red carpet members-only entrance, members cash giveaway and the launch of our Random Acts of Membership programme.

Moving forward we will continue to build on these concepts as we look to

reward our loyal Panthers members and show our appreciation.

I can reveal that the Panthers will be launching an exciting membership initiative in the next week or so. Our focus will be on turning Panthers fans, even those who only attend a hand-ful of games, into Panthers members. There will be some fantastic rewards for existing members who get involved and encourage their friends and family to sign up – so stay tuned!

Finally I want to take this opportunity to congratulate our skipper Matt Moylan and metre-eater Josh Mansour on their inclusion in the NSW Origin squad.

Their selection is another fine example of the strength of the Panthers develop-ment programme.

Best wishes to Moyza and Sauce who I am certain will do themselves, their families and the Panthers proud when they run out for the Blues.

LOWER GRADES

» Intrust Super Premiership NSW: The Penrith Panthers reserve grade team welcomed in a number of new faces last week before earning a much-needed victory to re-ignite their 2016 campaign.Following a number of weeks of defeat, Panthers coach Steve Georgallis un-leashed three of Penrith’s top Holden Cup talents to make their ISP debuts during last Friday night’s Round 11 encounter against the Canterbury-Bank-stown Bulldogs.Junior Kangaroos Nathan Cleary, Tyrone May and Dylan Edwards were given their first real test against men and didn’t disappoint, with each playing a crucial role in Penrith’s thrilling 16-12 win at Belmore Oval. As Penrith’s youngsters settled into the game, Canterbury were the only team to score in the first half and lead at the break 6-0.When players hit the field for the second half it was the Panthers who got on the board next after George Jennings received a great ball via Nathan Cleary to score his first try of the night.Soon after the Panthers struck once again through Corey Harawira-Naera, who swooped on an idle ball to score. With Penrith narrowly ahead 10-6, Jennings extended Penrith’s lead by six more points after he scored his second try of the evening via Will Smith.Canterbury made things close in the end with a late try but the Panthers man-aged to hang on for their first win in more than a month. The Panthers have a bye this weekend.

» Holden Cup: The Penrith Panthers endured an almighty scare last Saturday afternoon following a tight 28-24 win over the Gold Coast Titans at Pepper Stadium.Penrith’s 10th straight victory was an important one in the scheme of things as they did it without Nathan Cleary, Dylan Edwards and Tyrone May, who made their ISP debuts just days prior. Instead coach Cameron Ciraldo un-leashed a number of new kids into the fold to make their Holden Cup debuts. Penrith got off to a very slow start and were trailing the Titans 18-6 at half-time.However the second half was a much different story for the home side, who scored the next four tries unanswered to take the lead late in the game 28-18.Gold Coast made it interesting with a four-pointer close to full-time but the Panthers managed to hang on to reward the large home crowd.Tryscorers for the Panthers included Daniel Brown who bagged a double, Jack Hetherington, Corey Waddell and Christian Chrichton. Jarome Luai kicked four from five.

» Ron Massey Cup: St Marys are back in the winner’s circle following a 34-22 vic-tory over the Concord-Burwood Wolves last weekend.St Marys were up 22-8 at half-time be-fore the Wolves made a real game of it in the second half. Luckily for Brad Drew’s men, the Saints managed to hang on for a much-needed victory.
