PENR ITH PANTHERS VS PARRAMATTA EELS

KICKOFF: MONDAY 7PM | REFEREES: JASON ROBINSON & GAVIN REYNOLDS | VIDEO REFEREES: LUKE PHILLIPS & REECE WILLIAMS | TV: FOX SPORTS 7PM | RADIO: TRIPLE M 7PM

FORGET THE OFFICIAL PREVIEW, forget the tactics and the team changes, let’s just get straight to it and tell you the 15

reasons we hate Parramatta:

1. They’re Parramatta.2. Jarryd Hayne. Word is that ‘Air Crash

Investigations’ will feature the ‘Hayne Plane’ on an upcoming episode.

3. They beat us 19-18 in extra time at Penrith Stadium last year. Not something any Penrith fan wants to see.

4. Back in 2009, they beat us in a crucial game late in the season. A win would have put us in the top eight. We’ll never forget the heartbreak.

5. They’ve won more than 60% of their all-time matches against us. Just not on and it’s time the stats turned in our favour.

6. The Eels helped draw Penrith’s two biggest ever crowds at Penrith Stadium (22,582 in 2010 and 22,304 in 2003). We’d rather let Rabbitohs fans in for free just

to see the Eels’ name off the Panthers’ record books.

7. Round 1, 2002. It still gives us the chills. The Eels won 64-6 at Parramatta Stadium and Luke Burt scored two tries and kicked 10 goals for a club record 28 points.

8. Parking at Parramatta Stadium. It’s woeful. Clearly Eels fans cannot manage a car park.

9. Mitchell Allgood. A Penrith junior playing for the Eels. Enough said.

10. Ricky Stuart’s whinging. He’s already copped a $10,000 fi ne this year for having a go at the refs, even though his side was up by 20-odd points against the Titans and blew it. An extra box of tissues will be supplied in the away coach’s box at Penrith Stadium this Monday night.

11. Their headquarters is located on “Eels Place”. Oh please.

12. Chris Sandow. If Parramatta are down 30-0 on Monday and Sandow kicks a

40/20, he’ll cheer like the Eels have just won the grand fi nal. A contender for world’s most annoying player.

13. That time they beat us 64-6. So bad we put it in the list twice.

14. They’ve won more premiership titles than us.

15. That time in 2010 when Penrith led 22-0 at home, only to be beaten 34-28. Any comeback hurts, but when it’s the Eels coming back at you, it hurts even more. Not a great night for Panthers fans.

But hang on, I’m not that cruel. There’s a few reasons we LIKE the Eels:

1. They’ve won 11 wooden spoons.2. They choked in the 2001 Grand Final,

somehow losing to Newcastle after dominating the entire season and going into the match as short-priced favourites.

3. They came last in 2012. Feels good to say that, doesn’t it?

4. Back in 1993, they got beaten 68-0 by

Canberra in round 21. The game should be released on DVD.

5. From round 10, 1959 to round 10, 1960 they lost 19 straight matches. If only they could repeat that feat.

6. Sterlo. No jokes here, we actually really like him.

7. The fact that they won the minor premiership in 1896, according to the NRL Media Guide. Typical Eels, claiming they won something 12 years before rugby league even began in Australia.

8. The Western Sydney Wanderers are now more popular than them at Parramatta Stadium.

In all seriousness, this is a crucial game of footy. The winner gets their season back on track, the loser sets up permanent camp in the bottom half of the ladder.

Rivalries are a wonderful thing. Let’s hope Monday night’s chapter lives up to the hype, and the past.

Why we don’t like the EelsPREVIEW BYTROY DODDS

These sides shared the spoils last year, with the Panthers beating the Eels at Parramatta Stadium, but having the tables turned on them at home later in the season

FEATURE STORY

ONE OF THE MOST popular places at a footy match would have to be the canteen, where you can buy a meat

pie and bottle of Coke before settling in to watch a terrifi c game of footy.

For years the canteen facility at Doug Rennie fi elds in Kingswood has had its fair share of dramas.

There were times when the power would cut out midway through a busy period,

making the facility unsafe for workers and patrons, and leaving plenty of hungry customers without food.

Fortunately, thanks to the NSW State Government, Penrith City Council, NRL and Penrith and District Junior Rugby League those problems will soon be a thing of the past. Through the Community Building Partnerships Program, the NSW State Government is injecting $33,000 to help get

the Doug Rennie canteen block back up to standard.

“One of the things that the Program is all about is making sure that we support local communities, and our local sporting teams and clubs,” State Member for Penrith, Stuart Ayres said.

“The Penrith Waratahs Rugby League Club have been slugging it out in a pretty tiny and old school facility for some time, which probably doesn’t meet a lot of food standards we set in place these days.”

Secretary at the Penrith Waratahs, Bill Buckley, said over the past decade they have used the Kingswood-based fi elds a lot of

work has taken place to improve a number of aspects but fi xing the canteen was high on their priority list.

“The canteen has become a serious thing because it just didn’t meet health regulations,” he said.

“Junior football is all about the kids, it’s not about the club. Without people like Yvonne Purtell, Stuart Ayres and the Council none of this would’ve happened.”

Penrith and District Junior Rugby League manager, Yvonne Purtell, said she hopes to work with more local clubs to put in grants for upgrades in the future, given many grounds have been around for a long time.

IN THE BIG BUDGET WORLD OF RUGBY LEAGUE, IT’S SOMETIMES EASY TO FORGET ABOUT THE GRASS ROOTS OF THE GAME. IN PENRITH, THERE’S A DETERMINATION TO ENSURE THAT DOESN’T HAPPEN...

PR IDDO ’S PO INT W ITH LUKE PR IDD IS

WHILE NEW ZEALAND STILL hold the title of world champions, the Australian combinations that have

been built over the past few years shone through in the end as far as last week’s Test in Canberra was concerned. However there were plenty of positives for the Kiwis, especially the performance of Kieran Foran as he more than adequately took control in the absence of Benji Marshall. I believe he provided the direction they have sorely missed over the past few Tests which makes for an intriguing World Cup at season’s end.

With the amount of work that goes into playing surfaces such as drainage and full time care I can’t believe that some of the

matches planned at Centrebet Stadium were cancelled due to rain last weekend.

It was great to be able to watch multiple matches on game day every week and I applaud the Panthers for confi rming they will be looking at doing just this next year which surely adds some value for money when it comes to the fans.

Talking about fans I noted this week that for the last two seasons Penrith have recorded the lowest season match crowd fi gure and currently hold this year’s as well.

While team performances play a big part the actual entertainment during the breaks in play also factor into the equation. Hopefully the options on both fronts

improve otherwise I fear there may yet be lower fi gures to be recorded at the foot of the Mountains during this winter. However this week’s local derby against the Eels traditionally sees both sides fi ghting hard to be known as the ‘Best in the West’.

Penrith are at the point they need to do something to change their season so let’s see a big crowd to give them the support to make this change.

One side that has changed their season’s fortunes over the past few weeks is the Dragons. The ANZAC DAY match against the Roosters is one of the great events on our footy calendar. It’s great to see them back in form and back on track this year.

2003 Clive Churchill Medal winner Luke Priddis played more than 300 National Rugby League matches, including 162 for the Penrith Panthers

RUGBY LEAGUE’S ADMINISTRATION AND management will undergo a major overhaul just months after its

new CEO started in the job.The biggest change is the appointment of

Bulldogs boss Todd Greenberg into the role of Head of Football, a brief that will include a strategic focus on the “whole of game” rugby league operations.

“Rugby league is entering a period of

unlimited opportunity,” NRL boss Dave Smith said on Tuesday afternoon.

“To fully capitalise on it, the game must be as professional, skilled and successful off the fi eld as our players are on it.”

Joining Mr Greenberg in the new-look NRL will be Jim Doyle, a highly successful businessman and former CEO of New Zealand Rugby League, who has been appointed to the new position of Chief

Operating Offi cer, where he will have responsibility for critical internal functions and governance for both the NRL and clubs.

The new NRL Executive structure will see the creation of seven business units reporting directly to Mr Smith: Football; Finance; Operations; Corporate Aff airs and Community; Marketing, Digital and Content; Commercial; and Strategy.

Whilst the changes have been lauded by Mr Smith and the ARL Commission, the moves will only add to the questions surrounding Mr Smith and whether or not he’s the right man for one of the toughest jobs in rugby league.

“We have an ambitious strategy to grow rugby league on the fi eld and off the fi eld, in boardrooms and in classrooms, through the turnstiles and on television,” Mr Smith said.

“Todd and Jim are great appointments. They bring deep knowledge and experience of the game and an extensive track record in leadership and business.”

Commission Chairman, John Grant, supported the new appointments.

“It demonstrates the sort of planning that the Commission expects given the experience Dave brings to the organisation and has its full endorsement,” he said on Tuesday.

UNDER PRESSURE ABOUT WHERE THE CODE CURRENTLY SITS, NRL BOSS DAVE SMITH THIS WEEK ANNOUNCED A MAJOR OVERHAUL OF THE GAME’S MANAGEMENT STRUCTURES...

LEGENDARY PENRITH PANTHERS TRAINER Ron Palmer has been involved with the game of rugby league for as

long as anybody can remember. He’s the former player turned trainer

extraordinaire, running out water bottles and messages to some of the best teams in the game.

Now his 29-year-old daughter, Jessica Palmer, has made a name for herself in the female form of the game after she was selected to represent the Australian Jillaroos in the 2013 ‘Festival of the World Cups’ to be held in the UK this July.

Ron said his daughter began her sporting career as an elite soccer player before switching to rugby league four years ago.

“She was once part of the junior Matildas women’s soccer squad until she began playing league,” he said.

“Since November she’s also been involved with the Australian Rugby Sevens side and has toured the world.”

Ron believed it was “natural” that Jessica would eventually have a career in league after her brothers were ball boys for the Sydney Roosters for 10 years.

“Jess was always around the game and loved the game,” Ron said.

“She’s always stayed supremely fi t and doesn’t mind a collision or two. She’s just an outstanding girl as far as her determination and fi tness goes. She’s worked very hard to get to where she’s got.”

Jessica, who plays both wing and hooker, said she was thrilled to be chosen to represent Australia and credits her legendary father for all her successes.

“My dad’s been unbelievable, he’s my idol

and I’ve always looked up to him,” she said.“Any sport I’ve taken on as a kid, my

parents have always been so supportive and were always willing to take me here, there and everywhere. They love the fact I love playing sport and are very supportive.”

Jessica said both her and her father regularly exchange experiences and advice to help improve each other’s cause.

“I always want feedback from the old man like tips and pointers to make myself a better player,” she said.

“I’m forever asking him for better tackling and passing techniques, and he’s always helped me out.”

Ron added that he enjoys giving his daughter a hand with her game every now and then.

“We talk together about her fi tness regime and where she can improve in some of her areas,” he said.

“We also continuously talk about her development because she’s only in the initial stages of learning the game (league).”

Jessica said she was very proud of her long list of achievements across her multiple sporting careers.

“I’m on top of the world at the moment, it’s sort of surreal and I pinch myself every day when I wake up,” she said.

“Things are going really well and I just need to keep on playing consistent footy, train really hard and put my best foot forward to make the next couple of things for union and also perform my best for rugby league as well.”

As for Ron, he’s still one of the fi ttest blokes around and is doing a superb job for the Panthers.

PANTHER RUMBL INGS W ITH THE MASKED PANTHER

GS W ITH NTHER

SEND your Panthers gossip to The Masked Panther at [email protected]

I HAVE NO IDEA where the story came from about Penrith chasing league bad boy Josh Dugan, but it’s not true. Despite what

The Daily Telegraph claimed on Monday, the Panthers are not interested in Dugan’s services. Ivan Cleary has made it clear in the past that he is not interested in having Dugan at the Panthers, and Phil Gould declared “no, no, no, no, no” this week when speaking with the Weekender.

One story that does seem to have legs, however, is the Panthers’ chase for Todd Carney. Phil Gould has been very coy this week about whether he’s after the Sharks star, who I understand wants to stay at Cronulla but is also not afraid to listen to other off ers. After last week’s shock signing of Jamie Soward, who knows what the great Gus may have up his sleeve.

Does anyone else think Laurie Daley is a fi rst class goose for anointing Mitchell Pearce (pictured) as the NSW halfback so early? I’m a Blue through and through and I would like to think we’d select the form halfback of the competition to lead the charge against Queensland. Plus, it puts added pressure on Pearce to not get injured in the lead-up to Origin and to make sure his form is of an acceptable standard. Daley = Dunce.

I’m not here to defend other media identities but I’ve got to give praise to two people this week. The fi rst is 2GB broadcaster Ray Hadley, who gave Dave Smith a bigger kick up the bum this week than the Masked Panther’s wife gives him after a night out celebrating a Panthers’ win. Smith is way out of touch with the needs and expectations of the fans and Hadley rightly gave him a serve this week, particularly on the City v Country crowd – which was woeful. As much as Hadley gets a bad wrap, he is still an authoritative fi gure on the game and personally I miss him hosting the weekend of league on 2GB and calling games.

The second person I want to praise is Weekender tipster and Channel Nine reporter Erin Molan. Molan has, and continues, to cop lots of criticism from various corners – and plenty of it is purely because she’s a woman working in a traditionally male-oriented world. I

can assure you that Erin Molan is more knowledgeable on rugby league than most of the blokes who criticise her, and her passion for the game is legitimate. The only negative? She’s a die-hard Raiders fan.

Not much has been said about this but the behaviour of some of the crowd at the Tonga v Samoa test at Penrith Stadium last weekend was pretty ordinary. Hopefully stadium staff and police dealt with a few of the idiots in particular and we never see them back. The majority of the crowd was incredibly passionate, however, and provided a great atmosphere.

Spotted: Ryan Simpkins enjoying a feed at Kelly’s Bistro at Panthers last Thursday.

Eels star Fui Fui Moi Moi will miss Monday’s clash with Penrith due to suspension.

Dugan won’t be coming to Penrith

THE FOOTY SHOW INS IDER

EXCLUSIVE to Extra Time, our secret insider drops all the goss and information from behind the scenes of one of the most popular rugby league shows on television, Channel Nine’s ‘The Footy Show’

SWOOPING INTO THIS WEEK’S column is long-time favourite of ‘The Footy Show’, Mario ‘The Falcon’ Fenech. The

Insider caught up with Mario as he refl ected on the 20 seasons of the show and the current state of rugby league.

Looking back on ‘The Footy Show’ and its stellar 20 years, Mario pinpointed the show’s infl uence on his life,

“Rugby league is such a hard game, and ‘The Footy Show’ gives us an opportunity to have fun from a rugby league perspective,”

he said. “However, if I was an animal the RSPCA

would be outraged at some of the things that have been done to me over the years.”

Always one to embrace the fun, Mario still has a lot of love for enduring host Paul ‘Fatty’ Vautin.

“He was a good player and a smart operator. He has always kept it simple and presented well … it isn’t rocket science,” Mario said.

A rugby league man to his core, Mario Fenech is passionate about spreading the wealth of the game to the community.

“I do a lot of work in western Sydney and it really is the soul of rugby league,” he said.

“So many kids aspire to play our game, when I was a kid I’d ask the question, could I do that?”

His passion exudes when asked about the state of play in 2013.

“I’m excited today. We have a great

opportunity to push rugby league as the number one sport in summer and winter. We have a new structure and have bound together, taking on the challenge from the AFL.”

With Channel Nine signing a new rights deal, Mario believes the NRL is in a very strong position.

“Our game translates better to television than the AFL,” he said.

Mario agrees that ‘The Footy Show’ has plenty more in store for viewer.

“We smile and have fun but always discuss serious issues. With past and current players on the panel, we tip into issues and say it how it is,” he said.

A prodigious ambassador of the game, Mario Fenech concludes: “The Falcon is The Falcon because of rugby league”.

Don’t miss ‘The Footy Show’ next Thursday at 8.30pm. How good is the new timeslot?

LOWER GRADES FEATURE STORY

NEW WINDSOR WOLVES COACH Garth Brennan has warned his players: “if you don’t perform, you’re out”.

The former Penrith Panthers Holden Cup coach revealed to Extra Time he’s already told his new team to leave their egos behind and perform otherwise they’ll be replaced by some talented prospects in the Under 20s.

“Even though there’s some guys there who have played NRL and are on big salaries, they’ve got to realise if they don’t perform I will replace them with these young guys who are hungry to play NRL,” Brennan said.

“I know what the culture is in that NYC team and that’s the culture I want in my NSW Cup team, either give it to me or you won’t be there.

“Some of the guys need to adapt and leave their egos at the door because I don’t care whether you’ve played 100 fi rst grade games or no fi rst grade games, one thing I am is honest and sometimes brutally honest, but that’s just something that players have to

understand otherwise they won’t be there, simple as that.”

And it appears Brennan has already started acting upon his passionate speech by promoting a number of NYC players to the NSW Cup to take on Manly this week.

Fullback Kieran Moss will make his debut for the Wolves, as will centre George Jennings, half Daniel Foster and Tony Satini, who debuted last week.

“Kieran was a stand out in NYC last year and has started this year really well too,” Brennan said.

Foster, who played for Tonga in last Saturday night’s international against Samoa will cover for fi ve-eighth Blake Austin, who is out for a number of weeks with a foot injury.

The third-placed Windsor Wolves take on the 11th-placed Manly Sea Eagles at 6pm this Saturday at Windsor Sports Complex.

Meanwhile, halfback Sam Scarlett will return from injury to take his place in Penrith’s Holden Cup side.

NEW WOLVES COACH GARTH BRENNAN HAS LAID DOWN THE LAW TO HIS PLAYERS, SAYING HE’LL REPLACE THEM WITH NEW TALENT IF THEIR EGOS BECOME TOO BIG...

JUN IOR RUGBY LEAGUE W ITH YVONNE PURTELL

IN VERY WET AND cold conditions at Campbelltown Sports Stadium the Panthers came away with two wins to move into the fi nals

of the Harold Matthews & SG Ball competitions. These games will be played on Saturday at St Marys Leagues Stadium with Harold Matthews kicking off at 10.00am against South Sydney and SG Ball at 11.30am against St George. Get to the ground and support the local boys as they play for their chance of representing their district in the grand fi nal.

The junior league season kicked off last weekend…. although a little wet all clubs worked hard to get as many games played as they could.

There was a little unrest by some with the cancellation of games at St Clair and Lower Mountains due to the weather. People involved in rugby league need to understand that there are times when clubs need to close their grounds for the safety of all users and the potential future damage using these fi elds could cause. These games will be

played at a later date as we have a BYE weekend scheduled to catch up games and no team will be disadvantaged by these fi elds being closed. Let me assure you that your club will not close a fi eld without good reason as they too would like to get all games played, but at times this is just not an option.

Saturday, April 20 saw the return of some of Penrith’s home grown NRL and Holden Cup referees to junior league football. Grant Atkins, Jay Farlow, Daniel Olford and Dave Ryan all refereed the under 6 games at Hickeys Lane in the pouring rain. To demonstrate a career path in refereeing, the former Penrith referees went from Hickeys Lane to then offi ciate in the NSW Cup and Under 20’s State of Origin that afternoon.

The NRL now boasts seven NRL offi cials who began their refereeing careers in the mini competition of the Penrith Junior League. Russell Turner, Rickey McFarlane and Phil Haines were unavailable due the Anzac Test and City v Country appointments.
