From the PresidentAn exciting weekend of festivities is
planned for the annual Warren County Log Cabin Festival. In addition to our traditional activities we are sponsoring the S rst annual “Swan Chili Cook-Off.” Put on your chef’s hat and demonstrate your talent!
Our theme this year is “Farms, Barns, Seeds, and Breeds.” We have another book written by Jerry Beatty to go along with our theme. Learn more about Jerry’s book in this insert. If you purchased the Rural Schools Book last year you know his work is thorough and comprehensive.
We have a quilt that will spark memories of those who grew up on a farm, or spent childhood holidays and vacations on Grandma and Grandpa’s place. The Warren County Piecemakers have once again produced a memorable quilt that anyone would be proud to own.
Learn more about the weekend in this insert. This is an opportunity to help support the Historical Society Museum and Society mission of collecting, preserving and exhibiting Warren County History. It’s also an opportunity to celebrate our pioneer heritage.

Warren Gammon - First Breeder of Polled HerefordsThe Hereford breed was founded by farmers in the mid-18th century in Hereford County, England. Warren Gammon established the Polled (meaning, no horns) Hereford breed with eleven head of naturally hornless whiteface cattle in 1901. A historical marker marks the site of the fi rst breeding of Polled Herefords in America near Saint Marys, Jackson Township, Warren County, Iowa. To honor Mr. Gammon’s achievement, Rande Seufeurer, Director of Iowa Hereford Breeder Association, is sharing a life sized Polled Hereford Cut-out for a photo opportunity with the kids in
the Lester Building both Saturday and Sunday.
Pie and Cake AuctionSunday at 1:00
For many years, Mr. Kevin Putney volunteered his time and lively energy to help make our Pie and Cake Auction a success. Many know of Kevin’s deep roots in 4H and the countless ways he used his talents to contribute to the community. WCHS salutes Kevin who passed on too soon. This year we welcome Kevin’s son, Mark, who will pick up the baton as our auctioneer. Mr. Al Aldridge will return once again to help in the effort.Thank you Mark and Al!!
The auction starts at 1:00 p.m. just after the Chicken Noodle Dinner in the Museum Dining Hall.

Nancy DeLay, Linn Smith, Diana Brown, and Sharon Turner, Volunteers of the Year, have pieced together a stunning quilt honoring Agriculture in Warren County. Surrounding embroidered farm scenes are the names of Warren County’s 134 Century Farms and j ve Heritage Farms. To qualify as a Century Farm, a family must have owned at least 40 acres for 100 years or more. In the case of Heritage Farms, 150 years or more. Four additional Century farms and one Heritage Farm were added to the list this year. They are acknowledged on page 91 of Jerry Beatty’s book.
This quilt is a visually impressive tribute to these farm families and beautifully “acknowledges the deep roots of Iowa agriculture and the special bond that exists between Iowa families and the land they farm” - Iowa Sec’y of Agriculture,
Bill Northey. The Agriculture Quilt can be
viewed at The Stitching Place through Wednesday, September 24th. Rafi e tickets may be purchased on the square at The Stitching Place, Indianola Glass Creations, and Kerry’s Flower Shop. Tickets are also available at the WCHS Museum and online:www.warrencountyhistory.org.
Quilt Honoring Agriculture RaJ e Prize
This 280-page book is a tribute to Warren County, Iowa farmers—past, present, and future. It is an outgrowth of efforts by the Warren County Historical Society to recognize and honor the contributions of Warren County farmers in the social and economic development of this county.
In addition to library resources, this book is indebted to many farm families who shared a portion of their lives—backgrounds, stories, and pictures (over 100). Many interviews were conducted by phone or in person; some families submitted materials by mail or invited us to their homes or farms.
The book is divided into seven chapters. The j rst section describes the early settlements and various methods of farming on the frontier. The second part highlights the impact of mechanization and hybridization on agricultural production. Charts show the number of livestock and grain production overtime. The study also addresses the county fair, major farm organizations, special agricultural events and inventions, and conservation practices.
The bulk of the book examines many of the 142 family farms in Warren County that have received a Century or Heritage designation by the Iowa
Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship in cooperation with the Iowa Farm Bureau Federation. Other notable farms are also included in the materials. Some of the leaders in agriculture with a Warren County connection are identij ed.
The book recognizes a number of farmers and youth (4-H & FFA) for their achievements and awards.
People interested in history and agriculture will j nd this book interesting and informative.
All proceeds from the sale of this book ($30) are dedicated to the preservation of Heritage Village, Warren County Historical Society.
Agriculture in Warren County, IowaA Brief History
Farms, Barns, Seeds, and Breeds
1st WCHS SwanChili Cook-OK
Our j rst chili cook-off is in honor of Alexander Hamiliton Swan who heated things up in Indianola in the 1860’s as a land owner, a cattle baron, a state representative, a city council member, and a Simpson College Board member. He moved herefords from England, to Indianola, to Omaha, and j nally to Chugwater, Wyoming, home of a nationally known chili cook-off.
For $10 you can enter your chili to win. Competition types are Vegetarian, Meat, and Specialty and will be judged on color, aroma, and taste. Bring a gallon of hot chili by 3:30 p.m. to the WC Campground Shelter - judging starts at Call Linda Beatty at 961-3088 for details.
Quilt Display in the Horticulture Building Saturday and Sunday
This year's quilt show will feature quilts that have been donated to the Warren County Historical Society. You may come across one that was created by your very own great-great-grandmother. THANK YOU to
Kathi Stanfi eld and friends for putting our quilts on display.
