WARNING: Allow only qualified personnel to perform thefollowing tasks. Observe and follow the safety instructions inthis document and all other related documentation.

WARNING: Hot! Risk of burns. Hot melt material may bereleased under pressure. Wear heat-protective clothing, safetygoggles, and heat-protective gloves.

WARNING: Turn off the main circuit breaker (or maindisconnect switch) and disconnect and lock out input power tothe melter. Failure to disconnect external power to the melterpresents a serious shock hazard.

The Nordson CF 200 Controlled Fiberization gun applies a spiral patternof hot melt material onto a substrate when triggered by an electrically-controlled solenoid valve. Since this gun does not contain a heated airmanifold, the gun requires an external air heater (or heated hose) to heatthe air that forces the adhesive into the spiral pattern. This manualcovers the external air heater.

In guns with four or more CF 200 modules, spray air is delivered throughtubing connected to a separate single-channel or dual-channel air heater.The single-channel heater controls the temperature for one heated airsupply. A dual-channel heater controls the temperature for two heatedair supplies.

This section provides instructions for installing the external air heater.



CAUTION: Equipment damage may occur if the unit isconnected to any line voltage other than that stated on the IDplate.

Follow this procedure to install a single-channel air heater for a 2000Series applicator:

1. Use the mounting studs on the gun to secure it over the substrate andto reduce how much the gun moves during application.

NOTE: Mount the gun perpendicular to the substrate and in the samedirection as the travel of the substrate.

2. Complete the adhesive hose-to-gun hydraulic connection at the rearof the gun service block.

3. Use the installation kit to install the inline filter in the air manifold ofthe gun.

4. Secure the spray air hose to the inline filter at the rear side of the gunair manifold.

NOTE: Use only a new hot melt adhesive hose to supply spray air tothe gun. The spray air hose must be completely free of any hot meltmaterial.

5. Mount the single-channel air heater on a 1.3 cm (0.50 in.) diametermounting bar. Position the air heater so that the free end of the sprayair hose reaches the air heater. Then, tighten the lock-down screwsin the retainer clamps.

Follow this procedure to install a single-channel air heater for a 2300,3000, or 6000 Series applicator.

Follow this procedure to install a dual-channel air heater.



2. Secure the pair of adhesive hoses hydraulically to the gun serviceblock.

3. Use the installation kit to install the inline filters in the air manifold.

4. Secure the pair of spray air hoses to the inline filters in the gunservice block.

NOTE: Use only new hot melt adhesive hoses to supply spray air tothe gun. The spray air hoses must be completely free of any hot meltmaterial.

5. Position the air heater so that the free end of the spray air hosereaches the air heater without placing undue stress on the hose orconnections.

In some cases, it may be necessary to include a stand-alone temperaturecontroller in your system setup. For example, if you wish to control thespray temperature from a single source you can do this with astand-alone, nine-channel temperature controller.

When installing a stand-alone temperature controller, remember thefollowing points:

S Refer to the instructions shipped with the temperature controller forspecific information about your unit.

S Refer to the installation instructions given earlier in this section and inyour gun manual for general setup information.

S Locate the temperature controller so that you do not place unduestress on the electrical cables between the component being heatedand the temperature controller.

S Connect components to the temperature controller electrically afteryou have set up the rest of the system.

S Connect input power to the temperature controller after all otherconnections are complete.

This section provides information for operating the external air heater.



WARNING: Turn off the main circuit breaker (or maindisconnect switch) and disconnect and lock out input power tothe melter. Failure to disconnect external power to the melterpresents a serious shock hazard.

CF 200 guns and hoses receive input electrical power from theapplicator. The guns will not function until the entire system reachesapplication temperature.

Follow this procedure to set up the system to use a single-channelexternal air heater.

1. Install the system according to the applicator manual and Section 3 ofthe gun manual.

2. Turn on the main switch on the external air heater.

3. (Systems with stand-alone temperature controller) Turn on thetemperature controller.

4. Adjust the air heater temperature to 193 _C (380 _F) at the applicator.

5. Set the spray air hose temperature to 193 _C (380 _F) at theapplicator.

6. (Systems with stand-alone temperature controller) Refer to theoperations manual for your controller for information on settingtemperature.

4. Operation Procedures

7. Set the supply air pressure to the gun solenoid to 40 psi (273 kPa) atthe air heater.

8. Use the heater’s air regulator to adjust the spray air pressure untilyou get the pattern that you wish (1-60 psi, 7-400 kPa).

You may need to adjust the pressure more, depending upon theviscosity of the hot melt material and the gun response requirements.

The system is now ready for use.

CF 200 guns and hoses receive input electrical power from theapplicator. The guns will not function until the entire system reachesapplication temperature.

Follow this procedure to set up the system to use a dual-channel externalair heater.

1. Install the system according to the applicator service manual andSection 3 of the gun manual.

2. Turn on the selector switch at the external air heater.

3. (Systems with stand-alone temperature controller) Turn on thetemperature controller.

4. Push in the temperature selector knob on the air heater and turn theknob until you reach the set point temperature of 193 _C (380 _F).

5. Set the spray air hose temperature to 193 _C (380 _F) at theapplicator.

6. (Systems with stand-alone temperature controller) Refer to theoperations manual for your controller for information on settingtemperature.

7. Set the supply air pressure to the gun solenoid to 40 psi (273 kPa) atthe air heater.

8. Use the air pressure control knob on the air heater front panel toadjust the spray air pressure until you get the pattern that you wish(1-60 psi, 7-414 kPa).

You may need to adjust the pressure more, depending upon theviscosity of the hot melt material and the gun response requirements.

The system is now ready for use.

Follow this procedure to shut down an external air heater.

1. Shut down the system according to the applicator manual.

2. Turn off the air heater (and stand-alone temperature controller, ifapplicable).

3. (Dual-Channel Heater Only) Turn off the circuit breaker for the airheater.

4. Reduce supply air pressure and spray air pressure to zero at theregulator on the air heater.

5. Trigger all guns to relieve any trapped hydraulic pressure.

This section describes problems that can occur during the operation ofthe external air heater, their probable cause, and the corrective action foreach possible cause.

Short circuit or low resistance Check resistance between the groundlead and each of the black power leadson the hose. If you find a short circuit,rewire the air heater or replace thedefective component. Restore thesystem to normal operation.

Defective Heater Cartridge WARNING: Disconnect andlock out input electrical powerbefore attempting totroubleshoot the externalheater. The equipmentcontains electrical potentialsthat could be fatal.

Remove the air heater cover and checkcold resistance of the heater cartridgeby reading across heater leads. If youfind abnormal resistance, replace thedefective heater cartridge.

Defective RTD To check the RTD:

WARNING: Disconnect andlock out input electrical powerbefore attempting totroubleshoot the externalheater. The equipmentcontains electrical potentialsthat could be fatal.

CAUTION: Do not heat anycomponent with an openflame or torch. Damage mayresult.

1. Remove the air heater cover.2. Disconnect RTD leads from cordset

leads.leads.3. Connect an ohmmeter set to the

lowest resistance scale.4. Heat the air heater RTD with aneat t e a eate t a

electric flameless heat gun. Note theposition of the ohmmeter indicator asthe service block/RTD is heated.

A resistance reading outside the normalA resistance reading outside the normalrange indicates a defective RTD.Replace the defective RTD and restorethe system to normal operation.

Faulty over-temperature circuit To check air channel over-temperaturecircuit:

WARNING: This equipmentcontains energized potentialsthat could be fatal. Disconnectand lock out input electricalpower before you proceed.

1. Turn circuit breaker off anddisconnect power to the unit.

2. Remove the four pan-head screwsthat secure the access panel to theleft side panel, then remove theaccess panel.

3. Check the continuity across the OTCfuse elements (wires 11-4D and20-4G).

If there is no continuity across one orboth circuits, replace faulty circuits.

Faulty mercury relay To check the mercury relay:


NOTE: Ensure that you have installedthe air heater in a horizontal position;otherwise, the mercury relay contactswill remain closed.1. Turn off the circuit breaker and

disconnect power to the unit.2. Remove the five pan-head screws

that secure the cover to the unit, thenlift the cover from the unit.

3. Reconnect power to the unit.4. Adjust the setpoint temperature to

approximately 10 _C (50 _F).5. Check for 240 V across the relay

coils.If 240 volts are not present, check thewiring back to the temperaturecontroller.If the wiring is okay, replace the relay.
