Exterior ballistics activities at the ISL Open Range test site

ISL has skills in the domain of exterior ballistics, covering all the processes from model and sabot designs to the aerodynamic characterization of vehi-cles in free ight. In this sense, free ight experiments – with several types of architectures – can be conducted at the ISL open range test site located in Baldersheim, about 25 km north of Saint-Louis.

Objectives: aerodynamic characterization of architectures, sensor perfor-mance evaluation, analysis of behavior of vehicles in ight, etc.

Characteristics• Velocity regimes from Mach 0.6

to 5.0

• 4 relines from 50 m to 1000 m

• Ri ed or smooth bore guns from Ø 20 to 105 mm

Examples of studied architectures• spin-stabilized model

from Ø 20 to 105 mm

• n-stabilized modelfrom Ø 10 to 98 mm

• sub-scale space probes mounted in the sabot and guiding the models within the launcher

Measurement techniquesSeveral measurement techniques can be deployed to obtain free ight data:

• Doppler Radar

• Embedded sensors: magnetometers, accelerometers, gyrometers, pres-sure transducers, …

• 3D high speed optical system composed of two trajectory trackers
