EXSA GOES DIGITAL!

EXSA welcomes you to this 2016 issue of the EXSA Diary and Portfolio of its Members. This year we have gone digital and will not be printing the Diary but it is available on the EXSA website for you to download. We have in-creased the size of the Calendar of Exhibitions which is now A2 – and we have printed this to insert into Meetings and Business Events Africa. You can also download this from our website or collect a copy from the EXSA office.

At the end of 2015 we launched the EXSA App – to incorporate newsletters; push notifications; and to assist with the various judging processes. We are certain that this will change the way we judge shows and stands in the future. We are sure that this will also increase the numbers of stands that we judge for our members at all the various exhibitions throughout the country and which culminate in the EXSA Awards evening at the end of the year – the “Oscars” of the Industry. What this space!

EXSA continues to grow from strength to strength. The Young Professional Forum has steered the new App in the right direction. The Venue Forum; Organisers Forum; and Suppliers/Services Forum all work tirelessly for the benefit of the industry.

One of the main objectives of this Association is to market the exhibition industry and to increase the significance of exhibitions and events. To this end, we have regular columns in all the industry’s media; we also have regular press releases on Biz Community, a leading marketing platform for our industry; and we will exhibit at Meetings Africa 2016. Our annual conference will be held at Spier in the Western Cape from 31 January – 2 February 2016.

The EXSA Express is the EXSA newsletter which is full of news from our members – please make sure that you (our members) send through your press releases and pics. Remember the more you put into your Association – the more you will get out. So get involved with your Association – come to the meetings and network with your peers. If you do not receive the Express – please subscribe on our website.

The EXSA office is always available with help and advice so please get in touch with us. We look forward to an exceptional year ahead.

Chairman’s Message As we turn the leaf and begin a new year, the EXSA Diary enters a new era, for the first time it will only be available in a digital download format.

The South African exhibition industry continues to prove to be resilient, whilst many other economic sectors are struggling.

Interestingly with all of the modern forms of electronic communication available, “Face to Face” is often the most preferred form of communication

Exhibitions engage all our senses and this leads to a better informed buying decision.

EXSA remains a democratically representative organization, where the members determine their own fate.

Programs and initiatives are member volunteer driven.

Young Professionals Forum Chair – Bronwyn Mathias

What a great year it has been for the Young Professional Forum. Our greatest achievement is finally launching the Association app which will now become the associations main tool for communication, and will keep all our members well informed, in the loop and connected!

Thank you to all our participatory young professionals for all your assistance this year, let’s keep the momentum going for 2016. And congratulations to Gemma Drynan for winning Young Professional of the year at our awards ceremony. Very well deserved!

Organisers Forum Chair – Andrew Binning

Organisers continue to be the drivers of trade shows and exhibitions in South Africa and thus drivers of the industry at large.

It is largely innovative and pioneering organisers who stimulate demand for products and services and in so doing play a vital role in shaping the size and extent of the industry and in fact contributing to the economy.

Support and resources available to organisers are therefore of paramount importance and EXSA recognises this. It is therefore resolute to redouble its efforts to caucus for members’ interests. With a unified voice and professional administration, the Organisers Forum is an important ingredient in our recipe for success.

A modest amount of interaction and deliberation has taken place among organisers this year and while this will vastly improve, it has laid the foundation for some creative ideas going forward. EXSA has taken the decision to continue to represent all sectors of the industry, including organisers, and this bodes well for the representation and growth of the industry and our business.

Your national industry association is behind you. With your support I am confident 2016 will be the Year of the Organisers!

Suppliers Forum – Graeme Marshall and Doug Rix

Once upon an EXSA-LLENT time, in a land right under our feet, there lived and worked an army of entrepenureal individuals that supplied a range of unique skills and services to the Magical World of the Exhibition and Events Industry!!!

We gathered regularly on a monthly basis throughout the year, under the influence of the caffiene bean potion, to share insights and successes, to problem solve solutions and generally to just inspire each other to continue with the brave efforts needed to overcome the many firey dragons we face each day on the Industry battlefield. Some of these – like the “Adequate Build Up Period Dragon” we have managed to conquer on certain battle fields by successfully combining forces with the Venue and Organiser Industry Armies.

However we still need to focus on continued constructive communication between ALL Industry Armies involved to ensure that OUR Industry does not fall victim to surprise ambush attacks that may compromise our Quests .

The “Stand Design Judging Dragon” has been an illusive beast for many a year, but through the evolution of technology we believe that the inclusion of “new ammunition” in the form of our revamped EXSA App will assist all those Design soldiers, on the ground at each battle scene, to be effectively empowered to document the multiple design structures before their demolition and removal from the venue.

During the economic challenges of this current period in our future history, we urge ALL members of the various Industry Armies to be role models to each other and lead as positive examples – to make decisions with OUR combined Industry as the core focus – to look at problem solving rather than side line finger pointing – to engage at the various Forum levels and find a way to add value and not negativity !!!

Ask not what EXSA can do for you, but rather what YOU can do for others battling side by side with you in this Magical World of the Exhibition and Events Industry in Southern Africa !!!

Thank You to all those brave members that gave their all during 2015 to positively enhance OUR Industry – We salute you !!! We look forward to a future of positive growth in membership, constructive involvement on the various battlefields as well as multiple opportunities to celebrate OUR successes together !!!

Venue Chair Message – Lorraine Strydom

2015 has been a good year overall for venues, despite worrying signs at the beginning of the year that the economic slowdown could hamper growth in the sector. High level gatherings were accommodated in different venues, and many of the repeat events saw greater exhibitor and visitor numbers than in previous years.

It was an encouraging year – and indications are that many of our member venues worked harder and smarter to achieve the success that they did.

This augurs well for a great 2016 for venues in South Africa. In the offing are several brand new events – some international and some local – signifying a growing interest in South Africa as a platform for reaching African markets, as well as an increasing confidence in the South African venue sector to offer a good return on investment for exhibitions and events.

My thanks to fellow members on the Venue Forum for their contribution this year. Together we have made some progress on several issues facing the venue sector, including ensuring greater levels of inter-forum communication.

I look forward to even more participation in an active forum in 2016. Thanks too, to the EXSA board for their support and co-operation.

TIPS FOR A GREENER EXPO FROM THE EVENT GREENING FORUM

Plan, plan, plan and plan some more – failing to do this from the start, will make it harder to implement and monitor the sustainability of the event.

Encourage the use of LED lights, tablets instead of laptops, and LED display screens. This can reduce the energy consumption drastically.

Technology can make exhibitions completely paperless. If this seems daunting, do it in steps – for example, start by doing registration online. Make use of event apps to provide visitors with up-to-date floor plans and information on exhibitors.

Host your exhibition at a venue certified by the Fair Trade Tourism organisation. Fair Trade Tourism has a list of certified suppliers you may want to use.

Plant trees to offset the carbon emissions generated by your involvement in an exhibition. One tree offsets 10kg of carbon per year, and you don’t need to get your hands dirty – organisations such as Food & Trees for Africa will gladly partner with you and do the dirty work.

What you can’t measure you can’t manage. Ensure that you have processes in place to measure and manage the various exhibition elements like the waste and energy consumption. This will provide insights into what you can improve on at your next exhibition or event.

Don’t be afraid to talk about the ‘greening’ of your exhibition. The more you tell the public about what you are doing and why you are doing it, the more support you will have.

Most of all, keep it simple – it’s the simplest ideas, such as installing a three-bin waste system throughout the exhibition hall, that make the greatest impact.

HALL OF FAME 2015

2015Dawn Olivier In 1987, Dawn started in the exhibition industry by designing stands for her brother Allan Coulson and Raymond Burke’s company “Shell Systems”. She commanded an army of well drilled designers, personally mentoring them, many of whom have made significant contributions to this industry.

Remarkably Dawn still had time to bring up her three small children. In 1994 she started her own business, Dzines, designing and building stands for some of the most recognized global brands. In 1998 she re-joined Shell systems, which became billboard to head up their design department again. In 2001 Dawn re-started Dzines and then opened Rekopane in 2002 as their manufacturing division. She has won many stand awards throughout her career in the exhibition field and has done a substantial amount of retail design and installation all over the country. Dawn is a true pioneer of this industry.

Dawn rarely misses an EXSA meeting and has made significant contributions to the exhibition industry. Today Dawn’s son Alex is part of Dzines and they are going from strength to strength.

Conrad KullmanIn 1989 started his career as a refrigeration technician, but quickly started selling Training centre equipment. In 1996 he joined his brother John and they started 3d Design, As with many successful companies there is often a ying and a Yang, Conrad was soon put in charge of Sales and Marketing.

Since 1996, Conrad has created four other companies nationally within the 3d Group. In 2016 3d will be 20 years young and will be operating in their brand new purpose built 6000 sq.m factory. Conrad has two children Luc 17 years and Cuba 12 Years old. And he recently got engaged to Lynn Chamier. Over the years the 3d’s designers have been credited with numerous awards. However without Conrad superb marketing and sales skills in winning clients, many award winning designs would not have materialised.

Conrad is one of the most enthusiastic and positive people around, he is always ready to lend an ear or a beer and will help anyone at the drop of a hat.

HALL OF FAME

2014Craig Newman Craig has over twenty years’ experience in the exhibition industry where he started his career at Forge Ahead Exhibitions. To date, he has successfully occupied leadership positions in companies such as Kagiso Exhibitions, Oasys Innovations, Balanced Solutions and TML Reed Exhibitions.

Currently the CEO of the Johannesburg Expo Centre he has been instrumental in their renovation turning it into a world class facility.

Craig is known for his forward thinking, liberal, frank yet positive personality. As an active member in the exhibitions industry, Craig understands the market well but also believes that there is still great opportunity for growth, especially in the South African and Africnan market. Craig has recently been appointed onto the UFI board of directors

Doug Rix Doug started in the exhibition industry over 22 years ago, after graduating interior design. According to his then employer, he spent a lot of time lying on the couch. Fortunately over time he has become more involved in the business and took on more responsibility, and became an extremely reliable and likable person with his staff and clients. These qualities have not changed over the years, as he runs his own business Dk Design. He is still a person who can be relied on for a positive contribution by many including EXSA.

Nigel Walker Nigel by profession is an Environmental Scientist and has received numerous awards including the 2010 EXSA Chairman’s Award.

He holds a CMP and has been involved in EXSA in some form or another for well over 10 years, as Treasurer and Chairman, spending many long hours developing EXSA initiatives like the Young Professional Forum, whilst growing his own business, Compex. His interests include Fly fishing and Genealogy. Nigel has been a true champion for the Association.

THE 2015 EXSA INDUSTRY AWARDS The EXSA industry awards took place on 25th

November 2015 at the Monte Casino Ballroom with the

exhibition industry positively glittering in their “denims

and diamonds” which was the theme for the night.

The EXSA Awards recognise the excellence of their

members in various fields of expertise, generating an

awareness of the importance of the services that they

offer. The aim is to encourage healthy competition

and professional standards within the industry. EXSA

also recognises individual staff members at venues,

organiser and supplier/services companies who have

gone that extra mile during the year.

together to network and finish the year on a high” said

EXSAACADEMY FOR EXHIBITIONS & EVENTS


EXSA is pleased to announce the establishment of the EXSA Academy, which will meet the demand for skills development for our industry and will cover all compliance, legislative and training needs for its members and the larger events industry.

EXSA has partnered with Joy Donovan, of ExpoExpertise, to facilitate the establishment of the Academy. Joy, a previous EXSA Board member, has been involved with event training and skills development for over 40 years and brings her wealth of knowledge to this exciting new initiative within the Association.

“We’ve got to set our own Standards and start legislating the industry - SASREA already enforces full compliance with all other relevant SA Acts; to meet the requirements of the Occupational Health & Safety legislation; and of National Standards, particularly SANS10366, which demands that all people working at an event must have both experience and relevant qualifications,” advises Joy. “Each organiser should have written proof of such experience and qualifications, before they appoint their contractors. And the Act states that only experienced and qualified people may design and erect temporary event structures. The Academy will fill this gap and take skills to a new level in our industry” concludes Joy.

SKILLS DEVELOPMENT FOR THE EXHIBITIONS AND EVENTS INDUSTRY

EXSA recently stated that knowledge and skills development are vital to the health of organisations and are key to industry growth thus the motivation behind the establishment of the EXSA Academy.

The EXSA Academy plans to offer exhibition/event industry occupational standards from Grade 7 carpet laying to NQF level 6 degrees and professional designations in Event Management and Exhibition stand design, via recognition of existing skills, which will meet legal requirements, create a pool of skilled labour and significantly improve productivity. Professional designations will also set the standards for quoting competitively on hosting international events.

For every event standard or qualification, there will be a team of industry experts to help define the skills and experience required, plus to agree on how competence should be assessed – truly this will be professional recognition for the events industry, by the events industry.

If you are an expert in any of the following fields and would like to help ‘set the standards’, please contact the EXSA office:

event carpet laying, erecting shell scheme, assisting with custom stand construction, stand design.

As a starting point EXSA intends to award EXSA Academy Certificates of Competence in the above sectors and then to take it out to a far wider scope looking at standards and qualifications for all jobs within the exhibition industry. EXSA is already discussing the rigging standards with SACIA/TPSA.

The EXSA Academy will also be arranging CPD (Continuing Professional Development) to bridge knowledge gaps and keep skills current and relevant. And EXSA will liaise closely with the new Professional Body for the events industry – CEP Africa.

Transformation is a priority in the events sector which relies largely on skills development. The EXSA Academy will help its members meet the requirements of the BBBEE Act with initiatives designed to develop the competencies of black employees and establish clear career paths. And training your staff is vital to meet the new BEE Codes.

EXSA will continue to hold Training Workshops throughout the year to cover many different fields such as First Aid; Working at Heights; Power Tools; etc.

Each candidate who has completed and achieved a Certificate of Competence through the Academy will also receive an EXSA Academy ID Badge.
