Lehlohonolo Motolo of the Lebohang Secondary School in Welkom achieved five distinctions in Physical Sciences, Life Sciences, Mathematics, Life Orientation and Geography. The 18-year-old said he attributed his success to everyone at his school who gave him the support and to his parents. “It was not easy, I put in time to obtain these excellent results. I want to thank the principal of the school, the teachers, my classmates and my parents for all the support and advice they gave me,” Motolo told Express. “I was not surprised to learn that I did so well. I have been working hard and attending extra classes throughout the year. I knew I was going to pass, but I didn’t expect to be amongst the top 100 learners in the province. Being one of the top performers came as something of a surprise,” he said happily. Motolo said he wished to study Medicine at the University of the Free State (UFS). “I was raised by my grandparents who are pensioners and they won’t be able to send me to university. But I believe I’ll get a bursary to study towards a degree in Medicine. If, for any reason, I won’t be able to study Medicine I would look at other options,” said Motolo. Thabo Kobeli (19) of the Kgauho Second- ary School in Botshabelo’s Section C1 also did well. Not only was he amongst the top 100 performers in the province, but he achieved five distinctions in Physical Sciences, Mathematics, Agricultural Sciences, Life Orientation and Life Sciences. “I’m very proud of the achievement. It was hard work and took a lot of dedica- tion. I dedicate my success to the matric class of 2013 in the province,” Kobeli said. Tshepo Moleko (18) of the Senakangwedi Secondary School in Botshabelo achieved four distinctions in Accounting, Mathemat- ics, Business Studies and Economics. “I’m really proud to say I got my four distinctions. “I’m also happy to be in the top 100. Now he wants himto pay up or else lose the club.Tshabalala sold Roses to Mnisifor a whopping R8 million inOctober last year, but theformer has allegedly not seen acent from the sale of the clubwhich campaigns in theNational First Division (NFD).Mnisi was supposed to have

paid the first instalment of R4million to Tshabalala by 31December last year. However,he failed to do so as per theirwritten agreement. The balanceof the sale agreement was dueto be paid on 31 March thisyear.“I’m very disappointed with

Sinki. We did this deal in goodfaith, but now he doesn’t wantto pay me. He failed to makethe first payment before theend of last year and he hasbeen quiet,” Tshabalala toldreporters at a press conferencein Bloemfontein on Friday. After the sale agreement

between the two gentlemen wasfinalised, Roses relocated toTembisa in the East Randwhere Mnisi hails from. ButTshabalala wants the club toreturn to Bloemfontein as amatter of urgency.“Mnisi must pay up or else

I’m taking back my team. Hehas failed to honour ouragreement. There was also aCape Town businessman whowas interested in buying Roses, but I turned him down, because I trusted Sinki. Nowlook what happens,” Tshabala-la fumed.“The club is sitting in the

relegation zone. I want to saveit, I don’t want to see it goingdown to Division 2, because itwill lose its value. The value ofthe NFD and Division 1 clubsis R10 million and R2 millionrespectively,” he said.Roses are sitting on position

13 on the 16-team log tableafter collecting 13 points from14 matches. They have just 3points more than 16th-placedRoyal Thanda Zulu who haveplayed 15 games. When asked to comment

CHILDREN from Moshompela and Moikan-goa Streets in the Bochabela Location havebeen using an open hole, more than 15 m inlength, as their swimming pool. The hole hasbeen left open by the municipality and hasbeen left this way for five months.Residents of the location said they had

complained at the municipality to close thehole. They said not only did it pose a threatto children who could fall into it, but thehole was next to the Bochabela PrimarySchool, which opened on 15 January.Angry parents said although they had tried

to warn children not to go into the dirtywater, some swam in it.Masechaba Nche (48), a grandmother of a

six-year-old boy whose name she did notwant to mention, said she had beaten himafter she had warned him several times notto swim in the dirty water.“The water is filthy and rubbish has been

dumped into the hole. We’ve complained

again and again at the municipality, butnothing has been done,” said Nche.Another concerned mother, Golo Madilelo,

said when she had recently walked past thehole, she had seen one of the children sittingnext to it, appearing very ill. When sheinquired about what was wrong, he repliedthat he had swallowed some water.“He had tissues in his nose to keep out the

water,” she said.Express managed to speak to the young

boys who were swimming in their makeshiftswimming pool. Thabiso Rantidi (13) ex-plained that all they wanted to do was tohave fun and swim, but they could not affordto go to the swimming pool in Heidedal.“We don’t have R8 for the Heidedal

Swimming Pool, so we’ll swim here,” saidRantidi. His friends all agreed with him and added

that they just wanted to swim.) At the time of going to print, Expresscould not reach the municipality forcomment.

AS we start theyear 2014 with joyand expectation, weall yearn for abetter world ofpeace and security, for justice andunity.Lasting joy and

establishment ofpeace and securityresult from materialachievementsreinforced byspiritual perfectionsand service to thecommon good.

According to theBahá’í Writings:“Happiness consistsof two kinds;physical andspiritual. Thephysical happinessis limited; itsutmost duration isone day, one month, one year.“Spiritual happi-

ness is eternal andunfathomable. Thiskind of happinessappears in one’ssoul with the love ofGod and one suffersto attain to the

virtues and perfec-tions of the world ofhumanity.”The Bahá’í

Writings furtherstate that “untilmaterial achieve-ments, physicalaccomplishmentsand human virtuesare reinforced byspiritual perfections, luminous qualitiesand characteristicsof mercy, no fruit orresult shall issuethere from, nor willthe happiness of theworld of humanity,

which is theultimate aim, beattained”.Happiness is

being filled with joy, peace, love and asense of well-being.Joy is the innersense that can carryus through the hardtimes. We all gothrough times of joyand sorrow. Thereis no one who isuntouched by thesetwo influences. Butwhen we look forthe reasons for oursadness, we see that

the sorrow and thegrief come from theworld of matter. But

the spiritual worldimparts only joy.True and lasting joyis, therefore, closelyrelated to spirituali-ty.Lasting happiness

is also conditionalto our unity. Thepeople and nationsof the planet arebeing drawn closertogether as webecome more andmore dependent onone another. However, thisgrowing interde-pendence and

intensifying interac-tion among diversepeoples posefundamentalchallenges to the oldways of thinkingand acting. For instance,

there is a commonview and practicethat we can uniteonly if we are of thesame race, religion, nationality andethnic, social andpolitical back-grounds. We areoften suspicious andmistrusting of those

who are not fromthe same back-ground, or share thesame allegiances, letalone entertain thethought of unitingwith them.In the Bahá’í

view, unless unityis attained - a unitythat embraces andhonours the fulldiversity of human-kind - true peaceand security willremain out of reach. The Bahá’í

Writings prescribe:“Love ye allreligions and allraces with a lovethat is true andsincere and showthat love throughdeeds and notthrough the tongue;for the latter hathno importance, asthe majority of menare, in speech,well-wishers, whileaction is the best”and “Until allnations and peoplesbecome united bythe bonds of theHoly Spirit in thisreal fraternity, untilnational andinternationalprejudices areeffaced in thereality of thisspiritual brother-hood, true progress, prosperity andlasting happinesswill not be attainedby man”.In this new year

may we each and allbe enabled to fulfilour high and nobleaspirations; mayeach increase inspirituality; may weall experiencelasting joy andhappiness in ourhomes, workplacesand in our commu-nities; may we eachcontribute our sharetowards peace, tranquillity and anever-advancingcivilization.For feedback
