OF the 13 South African National DefenceForce (SANDF) soldiers who were killed intheCentralAfricanRepublic (CAR)by theSe-leka rebels, six were based at the Tempe Mili-tary Base in Bloemfontein.

Rifleman Motsamai “Mafu” William Boi-jane (27) from Masilo, Theunissen, was oneof the six soldierswhowereburiedduring theweekend.

Two other funerals, in Bloemfontein andBotshabelo, were also held for the other five(three in Bloemfontein and two in Botshabe-lo) soldiers.

The well-attended Theunissen funeralservice was held at the Masilo CommunityHall and among those who attended wereFree State Legislature acting speaker OumaTsopo, Lejweleputswa district mayor Math-abo Leeto, Tswelopele mayor Matshidiso“Matsho” Mathide, Masilonyana mayorStephen Koalane and speaker John Mabitleas well as several SANDF officials led by Maj.Gen. Mbatha.

The funeral programme consisted of twoparts, the first part included speeches by fam-ily and friends with the second including aservice by military officials.

Koalane indicated that South Africa wasnot an island, but part of Africa and also had

the responsibility of assisting other coun-tries. He reminded the mourners not to forgetthat South Africa had received freedom fromother African states.

He hailed Motsamai as a man of honourwho sacrificed his life for the betterment ofthe country. He also thanked the municipali-ty for the role they had played in assistingthe family with funeral arrangements.

Tsopo conveyed Premier Ace Magashule’smessage of condolences to the family.

During the military programme, it wasstated that Boijane had joined the DefenceForce in 2008 and wanted to become a para-trooper, where he became a rifleman.

The troopers were informed on 31 Decem-ber to report for duty on 1 January. At theparade they were informed that they wouldbe leaving for the CAR on the night of the 1stfor national duty.

An SANDF officer explained that Boijaneloved training by nature and continued withit in the CAR by using sandbags to train him-self and other soldierswhohad followed suitewhen they saw him train.

The SANDF stated that while the soldiershad been in the CAR, they had been heavilyoutnumbered but managed to fight the rebelswho were about 3 000 and managed to killmore than 600. Boijane was described as anasset to the country.

Mbatha pleaded with South Africans towake up because the SANDF was not a politi-cal football, and added that it was responsiblefor protection and peace-keeping in thatcountry and the continent as a whole. He alsosaid that the SANDF had known the trooperschosen as peaceful and disciplined, that Boi-jane had not died for himself but the countryand that if soldiers went to African countriesfor the money, they were in the wrong busi-ness.

He also indicated that Boijane had beenthoroughly qualified as he had undergone in-tensive military training and that the sol-diershad served the countrywithdignity anddedication.

He emotionally and humbly pleaded withthemedia to stop calling themnames, ridicul-ing the SANDF and embarrass them. He alsoadvised the media to do their research prop-erly before writing any story.

The Boijane family thanked the communi-ty, the municipality and the SANDF for their

comforting words and for assisting with thefunerals showing that they understood thattheir son had died for his country leaving be-hind a wife and small child.) Manoto is a senior communications of-ficer for the Government Communica-tions and Information Systems (GCIS).

IT is shocking that no senior FreeState government official was seem-ingly available to represent the pro-vincial government at the Bloem-fontein funeral for 3 of the 13 sol-diers killed in the Central AfricanRepublic (CAR) on 24 March. At the combined funerals of Cor-

poralNtebalengMogorosi andRifle-men Jimmy Mxhosana andKgobane Thulo held at the Vistacampus of theUniversity of theFreeState on Saturday, not a single sen-ior Free State government officialcould be seen.Thandi Tobias-Pokolo, Trade and

Industry deputy minister, who stillowns a house in the Grasslandssuburb of Bloemfontein where atleast two of the soldiers lived, spokeon behalf of the government afterrising from the floor to speak in theabsence of an official. She apologised in advance as she

had not been prepared to speak. That not a single German luxury

sedan could be filled up at the tax-payers’ expense and pointed in thedirection of the Vista campus stillbaffles my mind. For all the com-plaints that the media is negativeand should stop asking questions astowhy the soldierswere deployed inthe CAR to begin with and then tohave not one senior in the provin-cial government attending the fu-neral leaves a lot to be desired. At a time when the nation looks

for comfort from its leaders, it washeartening to have no less thanthree mayors, a municipal councilspeaker as well as a legislaturespeaker, all ofwhomare fromthear-ea, attend the Viljoenskroon funer-al.Outof respect forour fellowcoun-trymen, I’ll not repeat what ANCspokesperson Jackson Mthembusaid when questions were askedabout the troops’ deployment in theCAR.I would, however, want to hear

what Mthembu’s response is to thefact that no senior official of theprovincial government attended thefuneral.

Was no one really available?

THEUNIS BOTHA,Christian DemocraticParty leader:

UNFORTUNATELY itappears as though doublepolitical standards applywhen it comes to who willreceive medical parole oreven amnesty. The medical parole

granted to the fraudsterShabir Shaik, after whichhe was shown playing

golf, means that anymedical parole will nowhave a cloud of politicalfavouritism hanging overit. It appears more andmore evident that Derby-Lewis is not being kept injail for his involvement ina murder, but ratherbecause of who wasmurdered. The 77-year-old Derby-

Lewis, sentenced to lifeimprisonment for hisinvolvement in the murder

of SACP leader ChrisHani, suffers from variousailments including cancer. This sort of inequality is

prohibited by the Constitu-tion.We call on government

to also look at whatpoliticking in parole doesto community relations inthe country. We cannot afford to

exclude fairness andforgiveness, thus creatingmore polarisation.

Political doublestandards

TEBOHO MOTLOUNG,Bethlehem:

I SAT with disgust as thenews unfolded that we hadlost 13 SANDF soldiers.I wondered if our

government thought wewere stupid and gullible.Statements were made ofwhy we had deployed armypersonnel in the CentralAfrican Republic (CAR) andthat the attack (on theSouth African soldiers) hadbeen due to poor intelli-gence. To point out a fewthings regarding the CARissue, the so-called presi-dent Bozize was not anhonest man. He took overthe country in the samefashion ten years ago andmany lives were lost andfamilies misplaced.

He ran the country likehis own little tuck-shop anddemocracy was just adream for the people of theCAR, and yet we deploysoldiers to the CAR.Why do we send out

troops to the most unstablecountry in Central Africaand then claim we weredoing our national duty?I think it is safe to say

that the reasons surround-ing the deployment arepolitically motivated andare in the interest of ourpresident and his cronies. There are mines andminerals in the CAR and ifone should dig deep, I amsure one will find some ofour leaders having sharesthere. Let’s not be fooled, people, every army deploy-ment is political and serves

the interest of the selectedfew and not of the wholecountry, so when we electleaders who are going tosend our brothers, sisters, cousins and family mem-bers to such conditions, letit be for the good of thepeople and not otherwise. How do we send an army

to protect a president whotook over a country bymeans of a coup and thenclaim we were doing ournational duty? Most of these African

presidents do not even stayin their respective coun-tries, they send theirchildren to schools inAmerica, Europe and Asiaand spend most of theirtime living abroad and yetwe send our troops toprotect them.

GOD is the Creator of all things, theearth, the heaven and everything inbetween.Hehas caused every livingthing to come into being. God’s lovefor us is the reason for our creation. The essence of God is beyond our

understanding, butHis love touchesour lives continually. The way God’s love flows to us is

through His Eternal Covenant.“A covenant in the religious

sense”, according to theBahá’íwrit-ings, “is a binding agreement be-tween God and man, whereby Godrequires of man certain behaviourin return for which He guaranteescertain blessings, or whereby Hegives man certain bounties in re-

turn for which He takes from thosewho accept them an undertaking tobehave in a certain way.”According to His Eternal Cove-

nant, God never leaves us alone andwithout guidance. He sends us Hismessengers or manifestations peri-odically. Manifestations of God areuniversal educators who teach ushow to live in accordance with thewill of God and how to achieve truehappiness.“The source of all learning,”

Bahá’u’lláh says, “is the knowledgeofGod, exalted beHisGlory and thiscannot be attained save through theknowledge of His divine manifesta-tion.”Religionsbroughtbydivinemani-

festations are progressive expres-

sions ofGod’s revelation for human-ity. They all have the same basicspiritual teachings, which are re-peated from age to age.The differences among religions,

with respect to their social ordi-nances and forms of worship, existbecause various religions have ap-peared at different times in historyand among different peoples. The ability to distinguish be-

tween theeternal spiritual truthsonthe one hand, and the social instruc-tion specific to a time and place ontheother, makes it possible toappre-ciate both the unity of religions andtheir diversity. What is our part in the covenant?A covenant is a binding agree-

ment between God and us. God al-

ways keeps His side of the covenantby sending us His guidance periodi-cally and related to theneeds andca-pacity of humanity at the time theguidance is received. Our part in the covenant is to rec-

ognize themanifestation of God andto followHis teachings. Thepurposeof our lives, according to the Bahá’íwritings, is to knowGod and towor-ship Him.Besides, it is “to carry forward an

ever advancing civilization”.Knowledge and worship of God leadus to the love of God; love of God inturn leads us to obedience to HisCommandments and service in Hispath. To serve God is to serve hu-manity.Bahá’u’lláh says: “God’s purpose

in sending His prophets (manifesta-tions) unto men is twofold. The firstis to liberate the children of menfrom the darkness of ignorance andguide themto the lightof trueunder-standing.“The second is to ensure the peace

and tranquillity of mankind andprovide all themeans bywhich theycan be established.” Therefore, towork towards peace and tranquilli-ty for humanity is also part of ourcovenant with our Creator.AsBahá’u’lláh says: “Thewell-be-

ingofmankind, its peaceandsecuri-ty, areunattainableunless anduntilits unity is firmly established.”For feedback contact: man-

ABSA PREMIERSHIP log leaders KaizerChiefs were recognised for their consistencythroughout the third quarter of the season asgoalkeeper Itumeleng Khune and head coachStuart Baxter were named the Absa Premier-ship Player and Coach of the Third Quarter.

Baxter has led Kaizer Chiefs through animpressive period in the third quarter as the

Amakhosi collected 18 points from the eightmatches played. Chiefs were, however, pushed all the way by a resurgent MorokaSwallows outfit who amassed 17 points fromthe eight matches. After much deliberationthe judging panel decided that Baxter haddone enough to be named Absa PremiershipCoach winning R15 000 for his efforts.

Absa sponsorship manager Steward Mase-la highlighted Kaizer Chiefs’ consistencywhen the winners were announced saying:“Consistency deserves to be rewarded andthat’s why I congratulate both ItumelengKhune and Stuart Baxter on winning the Ab-sa Premiership Player and Coach for thethird quarter. The name of Swallows coach Zeca Marqueswas also discussed at length, where many ofthe judges in attendance believed Marquesdeserved to be recognised for turning aroundthe fortunes of the Beautiful Birds. Goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune scooped theR15 000 for winning the Absa PremiershipPlayer and was largely recognised by the

judging panel for being the standout perform-er. Khune was instrumental in the successfulrun Kaizer Chiefs put together and the clubkept four clean sheets andconceding just fourtimes out of the eight matches played. Judgesfelt Khune played a dual role for his team, notonly through his performances in goal, buthe also set up a number of attacks throughhis distribution.

The judging panel discussed a number ofplayers through the session with Khune’steammate Siphiwe Tshabalala featuring re-gularly. Tshabalala was commended for hisresurgence in form and versatility and forplaying a vital role for the club this season.

THE struggling Bulls willhave their backs against thewall when they entertain theToyota Cheetahs in a SuperRugby match on Saturday at19:10 at the Loftus VersfeltStadium. The Bulls were brought

down 23-20 by the Brumbiesin their last fixture in Canber-ra. In fact, before that loss thePretoria-side were beaten 23-18by the Reds in Brisbane and41-19 by the Crusaders inChristchurch.Against the high-flying

Cheetahs, the Bulls meet aside that is oozing confidenceafter registering five consecu-tive wins and will be lookingto stretch their unbeaten runstreak to six matches at theirexpense. On Saturday, coach Naka

Drotské’s men showed charac-ter when they came frombehind to defeat the Stormers26-24 with the last kick of thematch. With no time left on the

clock, the Cheetahs weretrailing 24-23 and they wereawarded a penalty from a bitof an awkward angle, butBurton Francis made nomistake from the spot andsent the home fans into afrenzy with his winningkick.Drotské’s celebration after

the match showed that thewin was crucial to him andhis team ahead of theirupcoming fixture. He jumped, punched the air

and shouted “Yesssssss”.“It was tough. I thought it

was all over when the siren

signalled for full time.“But the players fought hard

to notch up the win. Credit tothe forwards; they won theball from a scrum and neverlost it.“It’s a win worth celebra-

ting. It was our first winagainst the Stormers inBloemfontein since 2007.“They are a quality side

with a lot of Springboks,”Drotské said.“It was very important

for us to win. I think everygame is important to us.“We’ll take confidence out

of this and will keep our feeton the ground. There is still along way to go.“We haven’t achieved any

of our goals yet; long-termgoals. We still have to putin a lot of hard work so thatwe can achieve our goals,” headded. The Senekal-born coach

believes sparks will fly atLoftus on Saturday night.“It’s going to be tough

against the Bulls. They aredefinitely with their backsagainst the wall after losingthree games on tour.“Loftus is a tough place to

play in; there will be approxi-mately 40 000 people on thestands.“We’ve got to be at our best

and keep the momentumgoing.“We haven’t been able to

beat the Bulls in Pretoria fora long time now,”“However, we’ve got to

keep the positive out of thepast five wins and stick tothat.“I believe we’ll surprise

them in front of their fans.”

BLOEMFONTEIN CELTIC havepromised to showKaizer Chiefs anexit from the Nedbank Cup whenthe two sides clash in thequarterfi-nals at the Free State Stadium onSaturday. The kick-off is at 20:15.The inconsistentMangaung side

have been blowing hot and cold inthe league, but their inspired cuprunhas themdreaming ofwinningtheir second silverware of the sea-son. Siwelele have already addedthe TelkomKnockout to their thendusty trophy cabinet in December2012. To reach the quarters, theydefeated minors Milano United 4-1in Bloemfontein before seeing offFree State Stars 2-1 in Qwaqwa. The last time Phunya Sele Sele

played Amakhosi in a cup gamewas in the MTN 8 at the Rand Sta-dium in 2010.Chiefswon thematch1-0, courtesy of a goal scored byKnowledge Musona (now plyinghis trade abroad) in the 22ndminute.Both sides have made several

changes to their squads since thatquarterfinal fixture and Chiefs areunder a new coach. On Saturday it will not be Clin-

ton Larsen (Celtic) versusVladimir Vermezovic (Chiefs), butLarsen versus Stuart Baxter.Playing at their happy hunting

ground, Larsen’smen need to go atBaxter’s troops from the openingwhistle and give them little spaceto move. But that is easier said than done,

especially against a side withChiefs’ cup pedigree. They are themost successful club in the PSL in

terms of winning trophies.Celtic’s newest striker, Roderick

Mutuma, said they were ready toshoot down Chiefs at the weekend.“Chiefs are a quality team with

quality players, but we’ll have togo for broke. We also have a quali-ty team with quality players thatcan match them pound for poundon the field. We want to avenge the3-0 defeat they inflicted on us twoweeks ago,” said the Zimbabweanwho made his Celtic debut againstMaritzburg United on Sunday.“I was happy to finally make my

Celtic debut at the weekend. Ithink my performance was not toobad for someone who last played acompetitive match in December. Ineed three or four matches to re-gain my form, but I’m almostthere. I want to help my team winanother trophy and finish the sea-son in a respectable position,” hesaid.“I’m positive we’ll return to our

winning ways at the expense ofChiefs. They won’t beat us againthis time around. We have recti-fied all the mistakes we madewhen we met them in the league. We need to go all out and win theNedbank Cup for our supporters. For us to achieve that, we need tobeat the best teams in the tourna-ment,” he added.Celtic will depend on speedy

midfielders such as JoelMogorosi,Ruzaigh Gamildien, Lyle Lakeyand forwards Luyanda Bacela andMutuma. They should give Chiefsanxious moments on attack.Teaming up with Siphiwe Tsha-

balala, George Lebese, Lehlohono-lo Majoro and Kingston Nkhatha, they could outfox the Celtic side.

Celtic will beminus LeratoMan-zini who is out for the remainderof the season due to an injury,

while Chiefs will be without theservices of suspended ReneilweLetsholonyane.

) Tickets for thematch are availa-ble at Computicket and ShopriteCheckers.
