FROM THE DESK OF FR. MIKE The year is 1950, his Holiness Pope Pius XII, after consulting with leading theologians and conducting a Sensus Fidelium (a consensus of the faithful), proclaims the second Infallible Statement issued by the Holy Father. The statement regarded the Ancient Tradition of the Church now being turned into an Official Teaching: That at the end of her life here on Earth, the Blessed Virgin Mary was assumed body and soul into Heaven. This means that she, like her Divine Son, took on at the end of her life the Glorified Body. No decay of death touched her body, for it was through her body that Jesus, the Son of God, took on our humanity and was born into the world. As mentioned above, this teaching was always part of the Ancient Tradition, and even though it is not found written in the New Testament, it was known from the very early day that this what happened to the Blessed Mother. So if this is the case, why was it made an Official Teaching almost 2000 years after it was accepted as Tradition? Well look at the year, this pronouncement was made just 5 years following the end of World War II, which happened twenty years or so after World War I, which was followed by the Cold War and all of the conflicts that have occurred and still occur since 1945. The Second World War was the worst conflict ever seen by humanity. There was a total disregard for human life and total disrespect for the human body. During the war civilian populations were killed, great cities bombed out of existence (on both sides), villages and their inhabitants lost for ever, and then there were the terrible crimes against humanity. This was seen in the brutal treatment of Prisoners Of War, Concentration Camps, and the genocide carried out by Hitler, Stalin, Mussolini, and Tojo. Likewise there were new types of warfare, terrible experiments on human beings, and it ended with a weapon that can destroy the whole world. Pope Pius XII knew that our help could only come from Heaven and for each of us to refocus our lives to the holiness of all human life and the human body. By stressing the Dogma of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, he wished all Christians and the whole world to see the high destiny that is in store for us when Christ our Lord comes in His full glory at the end of time.

Our dear Mothers Assumption into Heaven us indeed a great gift and privilege for her, but it is also a gift for us; first because as she has gone so will we, and second because she can continue her role in Salvation History. How does she so that; well think about how she has appeared throughout the centuries of the Churchs life. She has been able to appear and tell us that her Divine Son wants for and from us, because she has the Glorified Body Again like Jesus, on Easter Day, she is not a ghost, nor a figment of the imagination, no she is truly present and she can talk to us, and even be touched by us. And she constantly intercedes for us as the Queen of Heaven and Earth. Let us close with the prayer from todays Mass: All powerful and ever-living God, you raised the sinless Virgin Mary, mother of your Son, body and soul to

the glory of heaven, May we see heaven as our final goal and come to share her glory. We ask this

through our Lord Jesus Christ your Son, who lives, and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God for

ever and ever. Amen. Happy Assumption Day

Fr. Mike

Respect Life For years, Russia faced an under-population crisis. One conspicuous explanation stood out: an abortion rate near 70 percent. In just over a decade, the country shrank by 12 million, prompting the United Nations to predict that by 2050, Russias population would further dwindle to one-fifth of what it is now. Only recently did this t rend change. At a special convention in New York during the week of August 2nd , the Russian Federation announced the good news. Finally, more babies are being born than aborted. In fact, last year, Russia experienced its first annual population increase since 1995. Yet the UN experts were not pleased. Instead of encouraging motherhood and healthy families just as Russian leaders have done most recently with a national Week Without Abortions the UN had preferred Russian work on racism issues and boost immigration. That would solve the problem, they insisted. But the Russian government knew better. Abortion was too big to ignore, and it was affecting those left behind, too. Abortion has been recognized as a serious problem in safeguarding the health of women, Russian delegates told the United Nations. In fact, they shared another benefit of decreasing abortions: maternal mortality rates dropped, too! This was good news all around. Right? Not for the experts. Reportedly, the UN committee complained about women being encouraged to have children instead of being quickly sent back to the workforce. One expert allegedly disparaged a society where women hold roles as good mothers, wives, and caretakers, while men provide for their families. Others abruptly shifted the focus to transgender and homosexual issues. In their haste to be politically correct, the United Nations panel missed the big picture. When abortion declines, mothers are healthier, babies are spared, and nations are saved. When this happens in a land infamous as the first country to legalize abortion and notorious for having one of the highest abortion rates in the world, there is even more cause to celebrate. So even in the face of united negativity, well do what the United Nations sadly could not: offer our sincere congratulations to Russia on this wonderful accomplishment. Life Issues Institute, 7/30/10 BE READY! .are you registered to vote? Many candidates will face a primary challenge on Primary Day, Tuesday, September 14. Also, on Tuesday, November 2nd, you will be voting on two United States Senators from New York, the New York State Governor & Lieutenant Governor, Attorney General, Comptroller, all New York State Senators and Assembly members, many judges, and some local races.

What Is Scrip? Scrip is a term that means, "Substitute Money".

When you purchase scrip, you're purchasing negotiable gift cards that are used just like cash. The scrip is issued by national and local retailers where you probably already shop. These merchants want to support non-profit or-ganizations, and in return ask you to support them by shopping with scrip at their stores. You can use scrip to purchase everyday expenses like food, clothing, and other essentials, and with every purchase, you earn revenue for our parish.

How scrip generates revenue for the parish A Scrip clearance center acts on behalf of many churches, schools and other non-profit organizations to purchase large amounts of scrip from grocery stores, depart-ment stores, and other retailers. Because the scrip is purchased with cash-up-front, the participating retailers offer a substantial discount. We buy the scrip from a scrip clearance center at a discount, and re-sell the cards to you for full face value. The bulk of the discount - from two to fifteen percent or more - is retained by our parish as revenue.

Scrip is "shopping cart fundraising. The reason for the effectiveness of scrip is simple: families generate revenue through purchases they would make anyway. Groceries, clothing, toys, gifts; even gasoline can be purchased with scrip. It is estimated that a group of 150 families will spend between one and two million dollars per year on food, clothing and other essentials. If these families use scrip for these purchases, they can raise as much as $40,000 to $80,000 per year for the parish -- without spending an additional penny.

Retailers like Scrip, too. Families who purchase scrip cards actively support the retailers who participate in this program. The reason is simple they know that buying from a scrip participating re-tailer provides a steady source of revenue for their parish community.

Can I use the scrip cards anywhere? Yes, the cards are accepted at all prticipating retailer locations.

Does it cost a family anything to participate? Do I have to sell anything? There are no membership fees or application fees. You simply pay face value for the cards you purchase through the parish. The beauty of the scrip concept lies in the fact that you raise money for your parish by using your ex-isting household shopping budget. Some families may enlist relatives, friends and neighbors to buy scrip. But, unlike other fundraising programs, scrip families do not have to "sell" anything to help our parish raise money.

USING SCRIP MAKES

DOLLARS AND SENSE!

Scrip gift cards are available in the Rectory Office during regular office hours and in the Church vestibule after most Sunday Masses.

New! AÉROPOSTALE scrip is now available in the $25 denomination. Shop for casual apparel and accessories for your 14 to 17 year old.

Automated Contributions with Faith Direct!

As you are probably aware, church attendance during the summer months tends to drop off as families go out of town for vacation. On the other hand, the services we provide within the parish and for the larger community continue year round, as do their associated expenses. Thus, your consistent financial support of our parish is vital to achieving our mission. Please consider enrolling in Faith Direct today. Participation in the Faith Direct program for automatic electronic giving expresses the willingness of the faithful to be a regular part of the mission and ministry of St. Joseph Catholic Church especially during these summer months. You may visit www.faithdirect.net to enroll, our Parish code is NY252. You can also pick up an enrollment form in the parish office. What is the best way to ensure our parish receives the support needed for our operating expenses and ministries during the busy summer months? Electronic giving through Faith Direct. Increased enrollment with Faith Direct will help stabilize our parish finances during the coming summer months when many families are away on vacation. I pray you realize how important your gifts of treasure to St. Joseph are, and will continue to be, and how much I appreciate your generosity.

God bless you!

In todays Gospel, Mary went in haste to visit and assist her cousin Elizabeth and she shows us that true dedication to others goes hand in hand with the gift of availability and compassion. With love for your

neighbors who have nothing, look around your house to see what furniture, household items, and clothing you no longer use...and give it to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul.
