Expobiogaz 2017: Bordeaux’s first edition crowned with success!
The 6th edition of the EXPOBIOGAZ trade show, organized jointly with ATEE Club Biogaz, finished proceedings on the evening of 1st June after two intense days that went to
the heart of the biogas sector’s big issues. Expobiogaz, the definitive national trade show for
the whole of the biogas sector, kept all its promises in Bordeaux:
- to present the sector’s finest offering, with 191 exhibitors and brands
- to attract everyone involved in biogas: farmers, local authorities, professionals from
the agri-food industry, waste treatment, transport, and more besides—over 3,350
professionals attended over the two days
The success of this edition therefore continues on from that of Expobiogaz 2016, held in
Strasbourg.
The professionals who attended this edition discovered a trade show wholly in tune with
market dynamics, with 191 exhibitors and brands: anaerobic digestion unit builders, after-
sales and maintenance, equipment suppliers (preprocessing, digestion, purification, etc.),
digestate reuse solutions, injection solutions, CHP production, NGV (natural gas vehicle)
builders and associated services.
Expobiogaz 2017 put the accent on the people involved—exhibitors and visitors alike—
brought together by a wish to share and exchange concerning the sector’s advances and
innovations.
A further proof of this success and the sector’s vitality is the international professional
community’s ongoing enthusiasm for the event, with 23% of exhibitors coming from
outside France, representing 10 different countries, notably Germany, the Netherlands,
Austria, Belgium, and Italy, and also 9% of visitors from abroad, this time from 22 different
countries including Germany, South Korea, Spain, Italy, and Belgium.
The success of this Bordeaux edition can also be put down to the many highlights that
punctuated proceedings at Expobiogaz 2017:
- two visits to anaerobic digestion sites (the agricultural anaerobic digestion unit at Saint-
Astier and the UCVA distillery (Aquitaine wine cooperatives union in Coutras) on 30th
May, the eve of the show, in partnership with Biogaz Vallée®. The visits went down really
well with the 90 or more participants.
- 25 conferences over 2 days with free access, notably organized by ATEE Club Biogaz,
Biogaz Vallée®, ADEME (French Environment Agency), FR CUMA (agri-machinery
cooperatives network).
- presentation of the Innovation Awards by Marc Schlienger, General Delegate of Club Biogaz, with first prize going to the PRODEVAL company’s AGRIGNV® system, a
purification technology especially suited to agricultural anaerobic digestion units, enabling
farmers to produce, odorize, and distribute bioCNG in situ.
There were also two judge’s favourite prizes awarded by the panel of judges:
HYDROLYSE BOOST, a new separate hydrolysis technology, “BOOST”, which makes
anaerobic digestion more profitable by significantly increasing biogas output—a
competition entry from the EVALOR company
THE SINGLE PISTON PUMP, comprising a hydraulic cylinder, a rinse-water box, a
pumping cylinder, and an intake discharge section with hydraulically operated valves
developed by the SERIP company
- 276 business appointments arranged for the two days via our free “Business Meetings”
service, a simple, practical way of arranging meetings with relevant contacts—visitors,
exhibitors, and partners—ahead of the trade show
- over 50 agricultural project initiators were able to attend themed training workshops in
the Agricultural Village, a new feature of the show that enjoyed great success
- in-show features attracting a cross-section of market stakeholders in the scope of specific
themes

First-time or regular participants, exhibitors at the 2017 edition tell of their satisfaction:
“Organizing this edition in a city where there’s never been a specialist biogas trade show has been a great way of promoting the sector. “The local Aquitaine context, which already embraces the sector, is ideal for kindling contacts and boosting new projects. Every entity involved in the sector was on show in Bordeaux. Corridor discussions and exchanges at the trade show’s gala evening salon were also very conducive to pushing projects forward. The show’s essential premise, namely making contacts with new project sponsors, kept all its promises. We’ll be back!” enthuses
Julien Brochier, managing director of K-REVERT, back for the fifth time at the
EXPOBIOGAZ trade show.
“We used the Business Meetings appointments service and enjoyed quality meetings with initiators of dynamic projects that were already taking shape. More of the same next year please,” is ARKOLIA’s verdict.
“Yet another fine edition of this trade show. Winning the Innovation Award for our AgriGNV® shows the bioCNG sector has a rosy future. Farmers can now produce and use their own fuel,” explains a jubilant PRODEVAL.
Our Business Meetings appointments service was very popular among visitors to this new
regional edition, one of whom was the FONROCHE company: “This scheme enables real time savings when seeking out companies and arranging appointments”. And, HAARSLEV
INDUSTRIES adds, “by concentrating many appointments into one day we avoid a lot of wasted time, which we can take advantage of to visit the other exhibitors.”
A BROAD, RELEVANT VISITOR BASE
Over its two days, Expobiogaz welcomed people involved all over the biogas sector: farmers,
breeders, local authorities, water and waste treatment professionals, agri-food industry
professionals, and more.
Key visitor statistics at the 2017 edition:
- 3,354 professionals attending over two days
- Local authority visitor numbers were double those of the 2016 edition
- 72% of visitors were project initiators or deciders
- 48% of visitors came from outside the home region, the Greater Southwest quadrant
- a rise of 9% in international visitors, from 22 countries including Germany, South Korea,
Spain, Belgium, Italy.
A telling proof of the unifying nature of this event was the presence of many institutional

A SIXTH EDITION PEPPERED WITH HIGHLIGHTS
At this first-class gathering of professionals from the sector, Expobiogaz offered a rich
programme of in-show events and highlights to let people discover all the innovations on
the market and to deal with all the sector’s current affairs.
TWO SITE VISITS
Over 90 persons participated in the two site visits we organized in partnership with Biogaz
Vallée® for 30th May, on the eve of the EXPOBIOGAZ trade show. The morning visit was
dedicated to agricultural anaerobic digestion and the afternoon one to the processing of
winemaking effluent by anaerobic digestion.
With industrial companies, local authorities, farmers, researchers, project owners,
financiers, and reporters in attendance, this day was a great opportunity to create real
synergy between the participants.

SAINT-ASTIER AGRICULTURAL ANAEROBIC DIGESTION UNIT
Sponsored by the Vallée de l’Isle Énergie company (V.I.E.) and running since 2015, this
farm-based anaerobic digestion plant brings in local breeders, cereal growers, and agri-food
industry operators and processes the region’s iconic materials, including duck manure. This
site innovates by processing the digestate with evapoconcentration equipment, which
extracts value from the digestate and monetizes the heat from CHP production.
UCVA DISTILLERY
This plant was created by the Doursat family in 1930 before becoming a cooperative
distillery run by the Union des Coopératives Vinicoles d’Aquitaine (UCVA) in 1949. Today,
the installation in the borough of Coutras is one of the biggest distilleries in France. Many
wine brands and groups of individual wine growers are brought together in this
cooperative, where by-products of vinification, especially grape residues and wine lees,
from over 7,000 wine growers across the whole Nouvelle Aquitaine region are treated. The
UCVA is constantly looking for ways to improve its systems in terms of recycle
performance, energy savings, and protection of the environment. The processing of liquid
rejects by anaerobic digestion meets these issues not just by combatting pollution but also
by helping make the plant self-sufficient in energy.
TOP INNOVATION PRIZE GOES TO PRODEVAL FOR ITS AGRIGNV® TECHNOLOGY
The Innovation Awards at the EXPOBIOGAZ trade show promote creativity and quality in
the products and services on exhibition at the trade show. This year the judges’ panel,
comprising representatives of professional organizations, trade show partners,
confederations, and trade press reporters, awarded three prizes, including two “judges’
favourites”!
PRODEVAL, 2017 Innovation Trophy Winner
PRODEVAL is a French company involved since 1990 in the processing of and value
recovery from biogas released by anaerobic digestion of organic waste. An independent,
closely knit company, PRODEVAL and its subsidiary CEFT, in charge of the design and of
the Automation-Electrics, has sharpened its skills over three decades in order to provide
customers with innovative, bespoke solutions that address all the issues related to biogas
(biomethane production, bioCNG production-distribution, biogas odorization, boilers, flare
stacks, H2S and VOC treatment, collection and networks, maintenance, etc.).
The company has developed purification technology, AgriGNV®, especially suited to
agricultural anaerobic digestion units, enabling bioCNG to be produced, odorized, and
distributed in situ. Farmers can then replace their fossil fuels by the bioCNG obtained from
AgriGNV®, thus making their farms self-supporting in a circular economy. AgriGNV® is
therefore a solution for substituting fossil energy with the bioCNG produced locally though
the extraction of value from local waste.
Advantages of this solution:
- savings enabled for NGV users (no more fuel purchases, immunity to oil price
variations, vehicles requiring less maintenance, etc.). Payback is estimated at 4–10
years without subsidies, depending on the fuel used and its cost
- development of the bioCNG sector with a possible nationwide grid. Too sparse a
coverage of fuelling stations is indeed a big roadblock to development
- contribution to bringing down atmospheric pollution and consequently global
warming
Special prizes for EVALOR and SERIP FRANCE at the 2017 Innovation awards
Created on the initiative of farming cooperatives, Evalor has been developing high-
performance, long-term environmental solutions for more than 20 years—solutions like
anaerobic digestion, aerobic and physicochemical processing, or composting.
The company has developed a new separate hydrolysis technology, “BOOST”, aimed mainly
at agricultural anaerobic digestion units (new or retrofit) to provide improved profitability
by significantly increasing biogas output while decreasing the size of digesters being built.
SERIP FRANCE is an engineering company that specializes in materials handling, storage,
and the mixing of dough-like, dry products. The company builds full process lines in sewage
treatment stations, incineration plants, and anaerobic digestion plants. The pumps are made
in their Corrèze factory.
Their single-piston pump received the second of the “judges’ favourite” awards. It comprises
a hydraulic cylinder, a rinse-water box, a pumping cylinder, and an intake discharge section
with hydraulically operated valves, all actuated by a hydraulic pump unit. This innovation
enables all kinds of products to be pumped, including stones and pieces of metal, without
damaging the pump, and can guarantee 24-hour anaerobic digestion 350 days per year.
The 2017 judges’ panel consisted of Helène Berhault, National Technical Expert - Chambers of Agriculture; Antoine Jacob, Chairmen - ATEE Club Biogaz; François Morier, Consultant Engineer – Morier Process; Thierry Ribeiro, Head of Agri-Industrial Sciences and Techniques Department - UniLaSalle; Marc Schlienger, General Delegate – ATEE Club Biogaz; Stephane Signoret, Journalist - Energy Plus; Lionel Tricot, Manager and founder of Elanor Consulting.
A TWO-DAY CONFERENCE SCHEDULE OPEN TO ALL
In the scope of this 2017 edition, over 25 conferences were held with free access. There
were many participants at these conferences, organized most notably by ATEE Club Biogaz,
Biogaz Vallée®, ADEME, FR CUMA, and AAMF.
These conferences tackled a wide variety of subjects related to the sector’s hot topics: biogas
sector appraisal and movements in 2017; ported gas or how to develop injection in grids;
gas accelerator grids in the energy shift; feedback and new tools to help favour the
acceptability of anaerobic digestion and injection projects; how to optimize value recovery
from digestates, etc.
HIGHLIGHTS REFLECTING THE SECTOR’S VITALITY
Several exhibitors cashed in on the visibility provided by Expobiogaz 2017 to unveil new
projects or give updates on developments.
