• Amanda Linthicum teaches fifth grade in Concord, North Carolina and is a graduate student in the K-12 Reading program.

• Pam Long is a fourth grade teacher at Providence Day School and is a doctoral student in the Curriculum and Instruction: Elementary Education program.

• Lindsay Yearta teaches fifth grade in Rock Hill, South Carolina and is a doctoral student in the Curriculum and Instruction: Urban Literacy program.

Overview of Historical FictionLesson Plan

• Introduce the topic with some pictures, posters, and websites. • Begin a read aloud (you can begin this before you formally begin

the lesson) with a historical fiction novel.• Analyze some historical fiction novels (you could do this by having

students in literature circles- five-six groups of students where each group has a different novel that they read and discuss) for technique, form, and content.

• Read from social studies books, trade books, internet for the students to get the content knowledge.

• Use Google Docs to create historical fiction piece of writing.• Publish writing using online tool called TikaTok.

Using GoogleDocs

• An online word-processing tool• Allows students to share and collaborate on

documents• Chat option

How to share with GoogleDocs

• Look for the SHARE icon in the top right corner of the GoogleDoc

• Enter email addresses• Option for editors or viewers

• Students write their stories• Add pictures• Publish and order book

• Students can order a personal hard copy of their work
