Cultural and urban Tourism of the

Old Town PhuketPhuket, Pearl of the Andaman blessed with on land and under water natural resources, is no doubt one of the Places to See Before You Die for many travelers. Aside from its long list of natural attractions, another side of its charm lies in the old towns community where a mix of culture exists in harmony.

The old part of the city is filled with historical buildings in the style of classic Sino-Portuguese which were constructed during the reign of King Rama 5 when tin mining was the citys most prosperous trade. Today, the local residents are collecting data and historical evidence of these buildings in order to preserve history for the benefit of younger generations.

The old city with Sino-Portuguese architecture has its own unique Peranakan culture. At Phuket Thai Hua Museum is where visitors can find out about their story and how Chinese immigrants left their homeland and settled down in Phuket to work in the tin mine. Their fascinating stories have become a part of Phukets history and evolved into a unique culture of their own.

Sino-Portuguese architecture came from the words Chino or Chinese and Portuguese for European which includes Portuguese, English, Holland and French. These are separated into 2 categories:1.Shop-houses, also called Tiem-Ju by the locals, are residences/ shops that are narrow, long and has a path way in the front called Ngo Ka Kee.2.Angmoh Laos are mansions of the Chinese tin mine directors. Angmoh means Westerner or foreigner and Lao means concrete building. Some are now converted into restaurants or museums but all still retain their elegance of the bygone era.

Tambol Rawai of Baan Bangkontee Tourism Community

Enterprise

The community of Baan Bangkontee (North and South) and Baan Koh Lone of Tambol Rawai were set up 120 years ago with 80% of the population being Muslims and 20% Buddhists. Tambol Rawai is blessed with natural resources, both on land and under the sea. They have majestic mountains, beautiful sea, beaches and islands and even formed a community where traditional handicrafts are produced.

This community is one of the places in Phuket that offers tourism based on

environmental preservation. Visitors will enjoy local art, tradition and bountiful nature through a list of activities arranged by the group.

These include the Rawai Groups Idea Paint which produces Batik cloth, embroidery, different products made from Batik cloth, aromatic balms and camphor inhaler, bakery,

traditional Thai sweets, herbal compress, cold-pressed coconut oil and scuba/ snorkeling.

Baan Bangrong Agricultural

Preservation Tourism Group

Baan Bangrong is an old Muslim community whose main occupation is fishing, agriculture and general labor. The village is situated between the sea and mountain with waterfall and fertile surroundings. Tourists often come here to enjoy the natural atmosphere.

The people of Baan Bangrong formed a group called Baan Bangrong Agricultural Preservation Tourism Group to encourage eco tourism within the community. With proper management and beautiful natural environment, it has received a Kinnaree Award by Thailand Tourism Award in 2010 for Outstanding Community for Mangrove Forest Conservation, plus an array of other awards given by other institutions.

Pa Klog Sufficiency Economy

Learning Center

Initially, local villagers of Pa Klog earned their living by coastal fishing and growing fruits. As time changes, farmers began to grow vegetables as a sideline; they started off with easy-to-manage vegetables like Chinese Morning Glories which brought a lot of income to the community. Today, they expanded this side of the business fully and devoted all of their time to agriculture.

A system they came up with is to rotate growing a variety of crops, starting with vegetables most popular with consumers like cabbage, gourd, moringa, etc. Some are grown on the land while others in unused containers.

I have heard about rice being grown outside the fields before but today will be my first time seeing this myth. How this is done is quite simple: They are grown in plant pots! What a marvelous idea it is.

The advantages of being a farmer are the discovery of useful by-products like the bio enzyme extracts. These are made by fermenting unused vegetables, fish and other materials until they turn into bio enzyme extracts that are used to enrich the soil quality without adding chemicals.

Every square foot of space is being utilized; they even have a corner for raising ducks and cat-fish for consumption.More importantly, people have been educated about separating different kinds of garbage and learning to recycle some while fermenting others instead of just throwing everything away.

at Baan Kanan of Thalang

A small village originally located in AmphurThalang since the time of ThaoKasattri and Thao Sri Soonthorn, this is one community which managed to preserve its tradition, history and religion extremely well. Everyone looks out for each other like their own family member and lead simple lives the way their ancestors have done.

The village is ideal for those who enjoy culture, tradition and being in a fertile forest environment with waterfall (Tone Sai Waterfall). It is a great place to learn about rubber plantation and fruit orchards as these are popular trades of the villagers.

By forming a group for cultural tourism which requires teamwork, the villagers also gain a lot in terms of bonding within the community.

Baan Kamala is not only the largest Muslim community in Phuket, but also connected to the history of PramaiSuri of Malaysias Lankawi; they also lead a life of mixed Buddhist and Muslim practice. Originally, most of the flat land area in Baan Kamala consisted of rice fields and orchards; but with todays changing trend, many of these properties have been transformed into accommodations for tourists. The indigenous plant which brings decent income to the village is Garcinia, also lovingly called Buffalo Oranges by the locals. It has an overpowering sour taste which is popularly used to add tanginess to cooking. Garcinia is also sold in dehydrated form and is available in the OTOP market in preserved, dried, as well as tablet form (believed to help reduce body fat).

The housewives also started a group which paints and embellishes their Hiyab cloth normally used to make sarongs and traditional costumes. These cloths can be custom designed to each customers preference. Being housewives, their other skill naturally involves cooking and making desserts. Among the varieties of yummy treats, you can see a cooking demonstration of Thai and Muslim fusion sweets like the KanomSaiSai (sticky rice dough with filling) and

KanomDuen that can rarely been seen nowadays. You can enjoy having a taste of these treats and purchase products made by the group at the community store.

Their vicinity takes up the longest beach area in Phuket, starting from Naiyang to Saikaew. And since it is the last patch in Phuket, both locals and visitors alike are particularly attentive because it means keeping tradition alive.

Working in the rice field

Taking a tour around the swamp forestSwamp forests take thousands of years to form as the water was originally sea water which had flown inland and got trapped by sediments. Over the centuries, salty water turned into fresh water and vegetation like grass and sedge started to grow around the edges of the marshland. Later, trees and bushes grew in place of the grass and eventually formed a swamp forest. Strolling along the swamp forest at the back of Mai Khao Temple is particularly peaceful and relaxing.

Other activities include Kapi cooking demonstration, rattan weaving and curry production by the sufficiency economy group.

The elderly believe that the sands of Mai Khao Beach are rich in minerals that can alleviate numbness in the hands and feet or even paralysis. Their method is very simple. A long, shallow hole is dug in the sand for clients to lie down; then more sand is placed on top of their body. They will remain there, nice and relaxed, long enough for the benefits of the minerals to seep in.

This activity is a lot of fun because it keeps everyone guessing how many will be caught in the net each time a big wave rolls in. Baan Tha Chatchai Community

Tourism Learning Center

The community of Baan Chatchai is a melting pot of different cultures as most of its residents moved here from other provinces. This community is also home to the Mogens, the original Sea Gypsies who have inhabited this area for centuries. Most of the residents living in the community work elsewhere during the day and return only to sleep at night. So basically, the village looks deserted. For this reason, leaders of the community got together to form a learning center where villagers could start an occupation and earn a living without having to travel elsewhere. Among the trades taught is bracelet weaving, with finished products being sold in hotels around Mai Khao Beach. The learning center gave people a sense of pride in their hometown, so much so that they came up with the slogan Frontier city, home of the Mogens, beautiful culture and legend of Sarasin Bridge.

Take a Closer Look at the fishermens (formerly known as Sea Gypsies) Way of LifeVisitors get to take a look into the lives of the fishermen who were formerly known as Sea Gypsies at Baan Hin Luk Diew (One-Stone Village). Although they have pretty much blended in with the villagers by now, the men still keep to their life-long profession of fishing while the women extract clams from their shell.

Diversity of the People and Customs They Brought AlongThe inhabitants of Baan Tha Chatchai consist of people who migrated from many different places, which naturally creates diversity in culture and groups of profession such as Batik painting, fish drying, bracelet weaving, etc.
