Colac Otway Shire voters have elected four new councillors and returned three sitting councillors in this year’s local government elections. Cr Chris Potter was elected to the Mayoral role for a 12 month term, with Cr Stephen Hart to serve as Deputy Mayor.

Cr Potter said he was committed to leading a group of productive and positive councillors, and identified unity and teamwork among councillors as a strong focus during his term of leadership.

“We have a new group of councillors who want their legacy to be one of strong, considered and transparent decision making,” he said.

“Our community has sent a clear message that it expects its elected representatives to conduct themselves and the business of Council with respect and accountability.”

Cr Potter said that one of the new Council’s first priorities was to develop a new four-year Council Plan, which would then flow into budget preparation.

“This Council Plan will be the first we have developed within a rate capping environment, which will present a new set of challenges for the entire local government sector,” he said.

“Our intention is to develop this plan hand-in-hand with our community.”

He said other significant projects included the development of a Colac 2050 growth plan; the completion of the Bluewater floor; progressing the Apollo Bay Harbour masterplan; and making improvements to services, including the planning department.

“Our community has entrusted us with an important job and our focus is on creating an efficient and effective organisation that’s well positioned to serve our community and create a vibrant future for our shire.”

Discover our best kept secrets The Christmas Day bushfires, coupled with extended closures on the Great Ocean Road due to flood and landslip, have had significant impacts on our local tourism operators.

As residents of our beautiful region we have the luxury of being able to explore and discover the magic while supporting the local economy. This summer you and your friends are encouraged to buy local, stay local and love our region.

Here’s a few hidden secrets to get you started.

Lake ElizabethDiscover the beauty of Lake Elizabeth hidden deep in the Otways, as you begin to explore the magnificent natural

playground in your own backyard this summer.

The calm waters, disrupted only by the trunks of trees past and the elusive platypus, were formed more than 50 years ago when the valley flooded to create this local wonder.

Enjoy a walk along the loop trail around the lake’s edge, or take a swim in the pristine water. Throw a rod in for good measure and a full belly. Then sit back and enjoy the peace and quiet.

Set on the bank of the east branch of the Barwon River and sheltered by tall eucalypts, you will find campgrounds for an extended and relaxing stay.

Now, let your mind wander to the many other hidden secrets our region has to offer.

There has never been a more important time to support our local tourism industry.

Glow worms Possibly the cutest insects you’ve ever seen. These fly-like insects called fungus gnats are better known as glow worms. They put on a spectacular light show amongst the dark shadow of night. Quiet though – the luminous larvae will go out if you’re too noisy.

Rockpools & underwater treasures For endless hours of beach fun you can ramble through the rockpools at low tide to discover mini ecosystems and secret marine worlds. For bigger adventures and more experienced swimmers, visit the protected waters of the Little Henty Reef system at Marengo. Composed of sandstone, and packed with sea life, it’s perfect for scuba divers and snorkellers to enjoy an underwater spectacular.

Waterfal ls Triplet Falls is an iconic waterfall, but have you ventured to enjoy the spectacular views of Hopetoun Falls as they crash into the Aire River? Or what about discovering the tumbling heights of Carisbrook Falls? With countless waterfalls in the Otway Ranges your challenge this summer will be which to visit first!

Redwoods Hidden down an old logging road near Beech Forest, these enchanting Californian redwoods invoke a sense of fairy-like magic. Only the crunch of the damp forest floor underfoot will break the peace. The 60-metre majesties will spark your imagination, deliver serenity and provide a cool oasis in the height of summer.

Berry picking Nothing tastes better than a fresh picked berry. Throughout December to March there’s an abundance of local strawberries, raspberries, bramble berries and boysenberries. Grab your buckets and the family, this is a great activity for kids and big kids alike.

Our Visitor Information Centres aren’t just for visitors, they’re a great resource for locals too. Staff can assist in helping you plan your day trip, weekend adventure or summer holiday. Jump online for heaps more information on regional adventures:

The joy of adopting a rescue petThat warm and fuzzy feel-good factor that comes with adopting a homeless pet is real. Just ask Mardi Hayes, pictured here with her granddaughter Lara and best friend Maggie. Mardi’s pet rescue story harks back to 2014, when she saw a golden labrador advertised on Council’s Facebook page that reminded her of her childhood pet, Beau.

She called into the pound to enquire about the dog, and fell in love.

“We clicked straight away. She came over and sat next to me and I knew she was the right dog for us,” Mardi said.

“At the time, my husband was against getting another dog, but now he’s smitten.

“I never thought I’d let a dog inside, but Maggie spends her days in the house, and sleeps inside on a dog bed at the foot of our bed.”

Maggie is the perfect playmate to Mardi and Neil’s grandchildren and a loyal friend to the Hayes’s elderly kelpie lab cross, Jim, who is also a rescue pet.

Since joining the Hayes family out at Balintore, Maggie has never put a paw out of place, and Mardi said she’s quite sure that the labrador understands how fortunate she is.

“Maggie was perfectly behaved from day one. She’s been on a holiday with us to Broken Hill and Bright.

“She’s gentle with the children, a great defender of our house and just has so much love to give.”

Council’s Compliance Unit Coordinator Graeme Murphy said adopting a pet through Council was a ‘win-win’.

“You get to save a life and gain a best friend, and your cat or dog gets another chance at happiness,” he said.

Mr Murphy said Council advertised pets for adoption on Council’s facebook page, but was also happy to take down the details of people interested in adopting a cat or dog.

“If you’re looking to add a pet to your family, come and talk to us about a rescue pet.”

Six great reasons to adopt a rescue pet Free pet registration!

That’s right - for your generous gesture to these abandoned animals Council will give you a year’s free animal registration and a pet tag.

You’re not starting from scratchWhen you buy a puppy, you’re essentially bringing an infant into your home. Most rescue dogs and cats have been house animals in the past so they come to you with at least some basic manners.

Vet checked, microchipped, vaccinated and desexed!Your new pet is thoroughly checked by a vet, vaccinated, microchipped and desexed. All the things you need for responsible pet ownership are already done for you. Council makes no profit from rehoming dogs, the only expense to you is the vet’s services.

What you see is what you getWhen you buy a baby pet, you can never really be sure what type of adult pet you’re going to end up with. Council officers monitor animals for eight days to ensure they are not aggressive and are suitable to be taken home as your new pet.

Adult pets are better for familiesAdult pets are generally mellow in nature and often more cautious and patient around children.

The bond is just as strongAn adult pet that has been abandoned is usually eager to become part of a loving family. We often find that rescue dogs are eager to win over their new owners.

A majority of homeless pets have been lost and

are in desperate need of a loving home and a second chance at life.

If you’ve got some love to give and a home to share, then please

call Council on 5232 9400 for more

information about adopting an animal.

Going C oastalEvery day’s a holiday along our beautiful coast. Supporting our local tourism industry this summer is easy! If you’re looking for inspiration here’s some adventures for friends, romantics and families to enjoy.

Family funChildhood memories are made of simple pleasures; family days at the beach, wafts of sunscreen, sharing chips with seagulls and trying to gobble up your ice cream before it melts.

Shoes aren’t required to enjoy the three kilometres of eastern facing beach at Apollo Bay. This safe and protected bay is suitable for families and leisurely bathers, and is patrolled by the Apollo Bay Life Saving Club during summer. It’s the perfect place for swimming, sand castle building and everyone’s favourite – beach cricket. Cost is free; just bring your own beach towel, bat and ball!

If you need a break from the sun, why not introduce the kids to a true rainforest gully with a short walk to Maits Rest. Just a 15 minute drive west of Apollo Bay this protected habitat is reminiscent of the Otways 100 million years ago. Little lighthouse keepers can climb to the top of the Cape Otway Lightstation.

Prepare yourself for ship watching along the way and keep an eye out for koalas sleeping high up in the gums.

Back in the ‘Bay the little (and big) kids can continue the fun with a stop at the foreshore playground and skate park. Put on your eye patch and explore the pirate ship, or find yourselves a spot of grass or picnic table to enjoy your well-earned fish and chips. There’s barbecue facilities plus plenty of shade and you’re just across the road from the ice cream shop! A perfect place to watch the sun go down before you dust the sand from in between your toes and buckle up for the sleepy car ride home.

Adventurers & seafarersStart the day with an adrenalin rush of a different kind – coffee!

Hit up one of the coast’s ever growing list of cafes to kick start your big day, you’ll even find a boutique roaster of specialty coffee just a few leaps back from the Apollo Bay main drag.

Now that you’re caffeinated you can pick your own adventure, and there’s plenty to choose from!

Find your sea legs and reel in

something from the generous waters of Bass Strait. Don’t worry if you don’t have a boat of your own, there are numerous fishing charters operating from the harbour. These can be arranged through the Visitor Information Centre. Out at sea you’ll be hunting salmon, pike, barra and gummy sharks so make sure you’ve got a big enough barbecue ready.

Keeping it coastal (if you’re prepared to get wet) Apollo Bay, Wye River and Kennett River put on an endless number of beach, reef and point breaks suitable for beginner through to expert surfers. You can even book a surfing lesson with a local and hire all the equipment you need. If you want to try something different, hire a kayak at Apollo Bay for a paddle out to the seal colony.

Towel yourself down and strap on the boots. Apollo Bay is the starting point for the 100 kilometres of trail making up the Great Ocean Walk. With walking itineraries ranging from a stroll to eight days, walkers of almost any ability can trek the iconic coast. Head inland for the striking cool temperate rainforest of the Great Otway National Park. Discover waterfalls, lush forests, cliff top walks, and heritage trails.

6 | Colac Otway COMMUNITY MATTERS

Whether you’re a solo traveller, a loved up couple or a group of old mates getting away for a day or a weekend, make your next trip to the Otways fun-filled and action packed.

Romantic getawayThe Otways offer a perfect romantic escape for lovers to cuddle up for a day, a night or longer.

Saddle up at Bimbi Park for a unique horse riding experience at Cape Otway. No hand holding for this one; you’ll need both hands on the reins as you ride wild beaches, along coastal cliff tops and through stunning bushland.

Hit the streets for a spot of shopping and browse through one of the many independent local stores. You’ll come across treasures from brands born and made in the Otways, as well as the most on trend threads and plenty of cute and quirky home and giftwares. If you’re visiting on a weekend try to catch the weekly community market on the foreshore at Apollo Bay every Saturday.

If you’re up for a drive (and have a designated driver) head to the hinterland where wineries are abundant. Admire the scenery as you drive the winding roads before sitting down to drink the best drops of the region’s paddocks and vines.

Apollo Bay has a reputation for the freshest local seafood, for good reason. Find a restaurant advertising ‘fresh fish’ and you, your loved one and your tastebuds are sure to be delighted. If a night in sounds more your style then follow the watery trail to the Fisherman’s Co-Op to hand pick your own banquet of underwater delicacies.

Check in to one of our boutique accommodation providers, whether you prefer the mystery of the hinterland or the rugged beauty of the coast you’ll find a cosy yet contemporary home-away-from-home for a good night’s sleep.

Relaxing with friendsYou don’t need a boat to find your own fish in Apollo Bay, you just need someone to fish with. Our rivers and coastlines are abundant with fish. Drop a lure off the harbour wall and pull up a trevally or squid. Cast a longer line from Marengo or the Barham River and you might snag a salmon, bream or mullet.

Book yourselves in for a bicycle tour with a difference. An effortless ride on an electric bike will have you meandering through the rainforest and taking in the stunning Otway ridgeline views. These super comfy bikes give you all the joy of cycling without the huff and puff!

Why not plan your visit to coincide

with one of our great local events? The Bay’s annual Seafood and Local Produce Festival delivers everything you would expect from a town famous for seafood, and this aquatic smorgasbord serves up crayfish, abalone, calamari and maybe even the odd mermaid.

Low key but equally as bountiful is the Apollo Bay Farmers Market on the third Sunday of every month. Showcasing some of the finest culinary delights from in and around the Otways, you can meet the people behind the produce and get a real taste of the region.

There’s always something on at the ‘local’, so if live music is what you’re seeking, you’ll find entertainment from a talented local muso or some of the best visiting musicians at any number of venues.

Hand in hand with live music goes beer. There are multiple local breweries from hinterland to coast. Sample the nectar of the gods and try a platter of locally produced cheeses, dips, bread and olives.

What a day, what a night, what an experience! Just when you thought you’d seen it all, there’s another new or exciting activity just around the corner. This summer, experience the Otways and the Great Ocean Road like you never have before. It’s a holiday on your doorstep.

FIRE SEASON - be prepared

Bushfires are a reality of living in forest and farming areas, so it’s important to understand how to minimise the risk to your home and assets.

Forrest resident Tania Evans and her family are aware of the vulnerability of their property should they face a bushfire, and they actively prepare to protect their home and farm all year around.

Tania, husband Sam and their 15 year old son Andrew, moved to a 100-acre Forrest property early in 2016. Well before moving in they discussed the risks and responsibilities that came with a bush enclosed farm.

“We understood the threat that comes with living so close to the bush, and so we had the conversation as a family about what we would need to do around the property to make sure we are always fire ready,” she said.

The bush is only 100 metres from the Evans’ back door. It is here that much of the preparation is focused.

“It’s a family affair, and each of us has a responsibility for our safety,” Tania said.

“Since arriving in May we’ve all pitched in to prepare the property, cutting back tree limbs, collecting fine fuels, clearing gutters as well as burning off and clearing undergrowth.”

Being prepared for bushfire is a constant part of their thinking and behaviour. The pumps and generator are regularly checked for fuel and function. The firehose is ready for connection to one of six water tanks and the horse float is stocked with food, water and supplies should the family need to leave.

Although Sam is a CFA member of 30 years and the former captain of the Forrest CFA, the Evans’s don’t require any special equipment to be prepared.

“A chainsaw, pole saw, gloves and boots are all it takes to ensure the property is fire ready, and we also choose to have a fire hose and generator.

“Andrew and I would leave for safety. Sam’s experience in the field gives him the confidence to stay and protect the property should he choose to, but he’d never put himself in a position of danger.”

Council’s Fire Prevention Officer Doug Winckle says our shire is one of the most volatile landscapes in the country.

“Council sends courtesy letters to landholders annually reminding them of their responsibilities to maintain their properties during the fire danger period,” Doug said.

Council started its property inspection program in early November. Inspections start in the north of the shire where grass dries out first, and progress southward into the Otways. Once all properties have been checked, Council returns to the north for a second round of checks.

Doug said there were heavy penalties for failing to comply with a fire prevention notice. Penalties are set by the State Government, and this year includes a base fine of $1556 plus clean-up fees and costs.

Doug said Council always sought to work in partnership with landowners rather than issuing fines. He encouraged any landowners with questions to contact Council’s Compliance Unit.

The devastating fires at Wye River and Separation Creek last summer were a frightening reminder of the damage bushfires can cause. While no lives were lost, the fire resulted in millions of dollars of damage to homes and property.

Neighbourhood Safer P laces are locations that may provide some protection from direct flame and radiant heat, but they do not guarantee safety. They are not an alternative to leaving early or staying and defending your property; they are a place of last resort if all other fire plans have failed. It is important to remember that even if there is a NSP in your town the safest thing to do is to leave high risk areas on Extreme and Code Red days.

Young Ambassador AwardMichael Bell wins

Congratulations to Trinity College Year 11 student Michael Bell on winning Council’s 2016 Young Ambassador Award.

The Young Ambassador Award recognises the commitment or excellence of young people in the shire in one or more fields of endeavour, and includes a $1000 prize to assist with further study.

Michael was one of eight outstanding candidates nominated for the award this year. He impressed the judges with his dedication to piano and music, confidence in public speaking and general enthusiasm.

Michael began playing the piano at age four and has furthered his talent to include producing and composing music. He has demonstrated excellence as an orator, winning school and community based awards in the field of public speaking.

The passion and skill demonstrated by all the nominees made selecting an overall winner difficult, with the judges choosing to give special commendation to two additional nominees, sponsored by Amer Sports.

Summah Briggs, a Year 12 student at Apollo Bay P-12 College, was acknowledged for her commitment to combining academic success with her chosen field of gaming and animation, and dedication to advancing her talents.

Year 12 Colac Secondary College student Adam Vesey received a commendation for his achievements across multiple sports including swimming, football, mountain biking and surf lifesaving, as well as commitment to volunteerism and mentoring in sport.

Well done Michael, Summah and Adam and congratulations to all the nominees for this year’s award. This community is extremely lucky to have such high achieving and passionate young people in the shire.

Bluewater a training ground for open water swims

Summer means one thing for regular lap swimmers at Bluewater Leisure Centre – open water swims! Right now, dozens of locals are clocking up the kilometres in preparation for the many open water swims on offer along our south-west coast, including the iconic Lorne Pier to Pub, Anglesea’s Rock2Ramp, Point Lonsdale’s Rip View Classic and Torquay’s Danger 1000.

Among these dedicated swimmers are Colac’s Colin Ritchie, who has achieved Sharkbait status in the Pier to Pub and is heading for another tilt at the 1.2 kilometre course.

This year will be Colin’s 15th Lorne swim.

“I generally finish in the top 25 per cent of my age group, and I’d like to think I can swim it in under 20 minutes, but it depends on the conditions,” he said.

“It’s a challenge in the open water to get your rhythm with so many people swimming around you but if you get your breathing, arms and legs right then hopefully everything else falls into place.”

Colin trains five mornings a week, and as a former City of Colac councillor who played a role in the original development of Bluewater, he’s a strong advocate for the centre.

“Most mornings I swim about 2.5

kilometres and occasionally I join the open squad swimmers. Squad is a great change from what I do normally because I get pushed more and we do shorter and sharper swimming,” he said.

“I’m also doing some occasional deep water running in the warm water pool, it’s fantastic for getting the joints moving.”

Bluewater’s swim squad is great for anyone wanting to refine their stroke and be challenged to improve their speed and distance swimming. Open squad is at 5.30pm on Monday evenings and 6.30am on Wednesday mornings. Members can swim in squad for free, non-members pay $10.10 concession and $12.30 per adult.

Join Bluewater’s junior squadBluewater’s junior swim squad is a great way for older children and teenagers to train for Nippers or re-qualify for their Surf Lifesaving Bronze Medallions.

Led by a qualified swim instructor at 4.30pm on Mondays, Bluewater’s Aquatics Coordinator Dionne Smith said junior squad was a great way for young people to regain their water fitness after a winter out of the pool and ocean.

“The training goes for an hour and the program varies from week to week, but typically will incorporate some stroke drills, sprints and some endurance swimming,” she said.

Dionne said the junior squad was attracting

strong numbers, particularly from the Apollo Bay area.

“This is the time of year when everyone wants to get back into swimming, but it’s not quite warm enough yet to be getting into the ocean.

“We’ve timed it so people based in Apollo Bay have time to get to Colac after school, but can be home again in time for dinner,” she said.

Bluewater’s Junior Swim Squad operates at 4.30pm on Mondays. Members can swim in squad for free, and a casual concession pass is $10.10.
