WHAT IS EXPLOLABS? EXPLOLABS (Pty) Ltd operates in the field of explosion prevention. We perform testing and inspections on new or in-service explosion protected electrical, electronic and electro-mechanical equipment (also referred to as Ex equipment, Ex apparatus or EPA) for compliance with South African National Standards. The Explolabs test laboratory is accredited to ISO17025 by the South African National Accreditation system (SANAS). The laboratory has been appointed as an ATL (Approved Test Laboratory for explosion protected apparatus by a) the Department of Labour under the Occupational Health and Safety Act and b) by the Department of Mineral Recourses under the Mine Health and Safety Act. Although testing is our main function, parallel services have been developed due to the need for expertise in these areas. Several years ago, the expertise developed through this activity has lead to an expansion of services offered and the establishment of further companies in the Explolabs Group. EXPLOLABS CONSULTING (SALLAB (Pty) Ltd trading as Explolabs Consulting) is an independent company and provides technical services for industries requiring explosion prevention due to the presence of flammable products. These services are important especially for manufacturing companies that prefer to contract out explosion prevention. They combine extremely well with the test function in cultivating the necessary expertise in our staff members. Many manufacturers and repairers choose to ensure production quality by operating under a product certification mark scheme. CERTEX is another independent company and provides a product certification scheme for Ex equipment and other equipment. The scheme has regulatory approval. This suite of services therefore allows Explolabs to offer a solution for

• Ex equipment suppliers, manufacturers and repairers;

• Owners and managers of plants, factories and mines with explosion hazards; and

• Engineering companies designing and constructing such facilities. Our experienced work force is motivated and delivers good quality service and value addition.

VISION, MISSION AND QUALITY POLICY Our vision is to provide a facility of international standing and to be the national leader in the field of explosion protection. Our mission is be financially and technically sound and to offer a valued service to our customers. Our quality policy is to establish Explolabs as a company of quality and integrity in the field of explosion prevention and related services.

HISTORY

• EXPLOLABS (PTY) LTD was started as department of SGS (SA) in May 1996 and soon obtained approval from the Department of Minerals and Energy for the inspection of Group I explosion protected (Ex) equipment. This was followed within a year by similar approval from the Department of Labour for Group II equipment.

• The demand for the addition of test facilities grew. A laboratory was completed towards the middle of 1998 and SANAS accreditation was received during November 1998.

• During November 1999 the laboratory was bought from SGS and Explolabs (Pty) Ltd was established. Cooperation with SGS continued with the appointed of Explolabs by SGS as test laboratory for Ex equipment.

• Steady expansion since 2001 resulted in the current staff complement of seven technical and eight support services staff members.

• The increased demand in test work lead to the decision by Explolabs Management to upgrade the current Ex Laboratory to a larger, modern facility. In 2012 this brand new laboratory was officially promulgated to ensure continual upgrading of the quality of our service to industry.

In looking for cost-effective ways to comply with legal and safety Explosion Prevention requirements, many companies prefer to contract out certain tasks. Considered as an industry leader in Explosion Prevention, Explolabs offers the perfect solution.
