1.  DNA is cut by restriction enzymes2.  Cut DNA is put into wells in the gel3.  When connected to current, the fragments move through the gel.  The smaller the fragment, the faster it moves.4.  The gel is stained so the different bands of DNA can be seen.

DNA Fingerprinting = the banding pattern produced by an organism's DNA

DNA is extracted and it is copied.  Then the banding patterns are compared.  This pattern identifies the individual.

• Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) is a technique to make copies of a segment of DNA, without using living cells. In about an  hour about a million copies can be made.• The sample can be small and very old and does not need to be purified.• Developed in 1983, it uses DNA polymerase to clone the DNA.• Used in medical research and gene testing, forensics and parenity testing.
