HONORABLE MENTIONA note to former SC State Senator Lewis

Vaughn concerning his article in the Greenville News about the Honor Flights honoring our older vets by our Wilton Bagwell;

Senator:

Thanks for your very good article in today's paper about the Honor Flights for older vets. I too, am a Korean War Vet having served in the USMC aboard the Marine Air Station at Cherry Point, NC from 1952 until 1954. I am a member of the Marine Corps league here in Greenville and our unit had some folks over to speak to us about the Freedom Flights. Those folks do a great job and deserve our thanks. I hope that you and your family are all well. Again, thanks for the article.

Marine Corps History

Marines and the 1824 Massachusetts Prison Riot

The Nineteenth century was an interesting and eventful time for the Marine Corps. Fighting pirates in the Mediterranean and the Caribbean, protecting American lives and property in Haiti and China and lending support to the civil authorities during domestic disturbances.

On 12 March 1824, what started as an attempt to escape by three prisoners, sentenced to be publicly whipped, to avoid their fate by seizing a prison guard hostage, escalated into a full-scale riot by 283 of the prison’s inmates. The inmates quickly armed themselves with clubs, knives, hammers, and whatever other items came to hand and congregated in the dining hall.

While prison officials debated on their possible courses of action while accomplishing nothing, word quickly spread throughout Boston. An off-duty prison officer, his name unknown, hurried to the prison to assess the situation. He immediately, on his own initiative, sent a request to Major Robert D. Wainwright, commander of the Marine garrison at the Boston Navy Yard for assistance.

While waiting for news of the Marine, this officer determined to enter the dining hall and confront the prisoners. Alone, he demanded that they disperse and, when the prisoners demanded that the punishment of flogging of their three comrades be remitted, he refused. The discussion continued for some minutes, with each side immovable from its position, until some of the prisoners proposed killing the officer. At about this time the officer saw the Marines filing by the small windows of the dining hall. He took this opportunity to make his escape from the dining hall.

Major Wainwright was requested by prison officials to order his Marines to fire on the prisoners through the small windows of the dining hall, first with blank charges, then with ball should the blanks fail to disperse the prisoners. Major Wainwright refused, determining to confront the prisoners directly. He ordered the door the prison officer had just escaped from reopened and marched in at the head of 30 Marines, forming line across the end of the hall. Wainwright stated that he was determined that he would not leave the hall until every prisoner returned to their duties. The prisoners noted the disparity in numbers between the two groups, swearing to fight to the last to obtain remission of the flogging sentence.

Major Wainwright ordered his Marines to load their pieces, and to prove he was in earnest, had each Marine hold up the ball before placing it into the bore. The prisoners growled at this and none withdrew. They believed their numbers would swamp the Marines, destroying them after the first volley.

The Marines were ordered to take aim and Major Wainwright, desiring to avoid the bloodshed that would follow the volley, stepped forward to address the prisoners one last time, again urging them to disperse. The prisoners remained determined

to fight. Taking out his watch, Major Wainwright said, “You must leave this hall. I give you three minutes to decide. If at the end of that time a man remains, he shall be shot dead. I speak no more.” The prisoners waited, staring at the line of leveled muskets in the hands of cold-eyed disciplined Marines, waiting for Major Wainwright’s command to begin the killing. For two minutes, the standoff continued, then by twos and threes the prisoners began leaving quietly, then before another 30 seconds had passed, panic set in, and the hall was rapidly cleared of prisoners.

While this incident is nearly unknown today, this example of Marine courage and steadfastness was included in McGuffey’s Reader (1836 version), used in American schools for nearly 75 years.

Two of America’s Finest

UNIFORM TIPSWhen we are out in the public eye we are required to present a professional appearance. We all look sharp in our red jackets and receive many complements from those we serve. One area that needs attention is shoes. I shine my shoes and choose not to wear the high gloss that many wear. Having shoes that require no shining is good but we need to focus on the soles of our foot wear to look sharp. We all had to do that when we were in the Corps and now Marines don’t shine brass or shoes. It isn’t hard to do, just require a little more attention;
