    EXPERIMENT 1

Chemistry 0330 Laboratory Report 1How Can Eleven Colorless Solutions be Chemically Identified?

    1. Identify the eleven solutions by matching the solution number with the chemical formula. In the right-

hand column, cite the observation that identified each solution (the final step in your flow chart for

identifying that solution). The observation should be specific and brief: e.g. results of pH tests, chemical

formula and color of specific precipitations, flame color, gasses, etc.

    Chemical Formula

    e.g. Na2CO3

    2. Write and attach the flow chart for the scheme that you used (this may be different from the original

plan), and letter each step on the chart. For instance, in the example, A Solved Eleven Solution Problem,

you would indicate pH test (A), flame test (B), add BaCl2 (C), and so on. Your flow chart must justify the

identifications you made in Question 1 or you will lose credit for the identification. Do not include any

reactions in the flow chart. Follow the format in the Flow Chart of the Sample Problem.

    3. For each of the steps lettered in Question 2, write the net ionic reactions where appropriate. Indicate

the state (aq, l, s, g) of each reactant and product.

    4. For each verification test, prepare a table listing the compound being tested, the pair of solutions mixed

(by number), the observation or observations, and the net ionic reaction.

    Compound

    e.g. Na2CO3

    Pair

    e.g. 3,7

    Expected (Formula)

    e.g. CO2

    Observed (Event)

    e.g. bubbles

    Reactions e.g. CO32-(aq)+2H+(aq)

    CO2(g)+H2O(l)

    5. Use the Materials Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) from the Brown University Environmental Health and

Safety Site,, (use the Brown Secure website) to

answer the following questions for threeof the eleven solutions (your computer needs to login to the

    Brown secure website)

    a. CAS registration numbers

    HCl 7647010

    Ba(NO3)2 10022318

    Na2(CO3) - 6132021

    b. MSDS only lists safety information for 100% pure chemical compounds. Identify two potential health

effects if the pure compounds were used (do not be alarmed by any precautions, as we used very dilute

    solutions of the compounds).

f pure !"l were used in the lab# contact with the s$in would causeburns# dermatitis# and possible ulcers. f pure Na2("%&) were used inthe lab# contact with the s$in would cause blisterin'# seere irritation#
