The K3 Sisters Band, a locally grownsister act, finished its award-winningconcert tour of dozens of public schools inNorth Texas that culminated with twoband members being awarded diplomasas well as the announcement of sevenconcerts for nonprofit organizations inNorth Texas. Bruce Ray Kassab receivedhis doctoral degree from SouthwesternSeminary, and Kalem received his highschool equivalency diploma from Rock-wall’s Quest Academy. Kassab has re-ceived new music, speaking andcommunity service assignments fromSunnyvale First Baptist Church, andKalem is already studying computer en-

gineering at Richland College. But contri-butions to their up-and-coming bandcould propel them to new heights.

In addition to producing and deliver-ing dozens of concerts featuring award-winning vocals, multi-instrumentnumbers and dance routines, the uniqueseven-person family band has met threetimes with television producers for NBC’sshow “America’s Got Talent.”

“We were blown away by the positivereaction of the show producers in Hous-ton, and last week we recorded two addi-tional YouTubes [videos] for the show,”said soon-to-be 12-year-old KaylenKassab, the oldest of the performing trio

of sisters. “Even if they don’t call us back, the interest of such high-level music in-dustry people has inspired Kelsey, Kris-ten and all of us to work even harder.”

As a thank-you to their fans and a cel-ebration of their recent achievements, theband planned to award seven free concertfundraisers to 501c3 organizations thatare religious, educational, charitable, sci-entific, literary or that promote the pre-vention of cruelty to children or animals.

The K3 Sisters Band can be seen per-forming locally at Lone Star Park inGrand Prairie on June 25, and will be atthe State Fair of Texas. For more infor-mation, visit www.K3Sisters.com.

The city of Mesquite has been engagedin Project Renewal for several years. Theproject’s main goals are to enhance thecity and prepare it for the future ahead.Part of that enhancement process in-cludes beautifying the city and addingamenities to make the city more attrac-tive to visitors and potential residents orbusinesses. With that in mind, the

Mesquite Arts Council developed a five-year plan to add additional art elementsto the city.

“Much of the work the city council isdoing has to do with Project Renewal tobring the city within 21st century guide-lines. This is one of those areas that thearts can have an impact,” said Mike Tem-pleton, Mesquite Arts Center director.

One of the items on the art coun-cil’s strategic plan includes a projectknown as Art Around Town. The goal

of the project is to contract with localartists to place pieces of art throughoutvarious public areas of the city.

“I think this project is very important.People enjoy driving through their com-munities,” Templeton said.

The project is modeled after the Henderson Art Project in Dallasand the outdoor sculpture program in Abilene.

“Being in arts administration there are programs that we comeacross and evaluate,” Templeton said.

Templeton said the arts council will place six pieces of art intoselected areas each year on a two-year cycle. Every year threepieces will be placed in an area of the city. All locations will be de-termined by code limitations, the amount of traffic that passes anarea and visibility.

“We have talked to the parks department and they have agreedto help us with placement of the art,” Templeton said.

At the end of each year the contract with the artists will bestructured so that there is a constant turnover of three of the sixpieces. The artist also has the option to remove the art if it is soldor after it has been displayed for 16 months.

Each of the artists will be given a $1,000 stipend, insurancecosts up to $5,000 and the cost of materials. The project will be

funded by the arts council. Any shortfall in fund-ing will come from the hotel/motel tax, which isallowed to be used to improve tourism. The art-

work can be considered a tourist attraction, allowing for it to assist in funding the project.

One of the first pieces the arts council tar-geted to be placed in the city is a sculpturecalled “Water Lilly” by Lauren Walters. Thesculpture is on display at the intersection ofGalloway and Grubb in the median.

The city also hopes to place artwork atthe trailheads of the city’s hike andbike trail.

The Mesquite Symphonic Band per-formed its 20th Annual “Music in thePark” free outdoor summer concert seriesin 2011.

“Music in the Park” is presented in co-operation with the Mesquite Parks andRecreation Department.

“We’re very excited to once again pres-ent this program for the enjoyment of thecommunity,” said Dale Coates, director ofthe band. “This is by far our most fa-vorite event each year. Being outdoors ina relaxed atmosphere gives the band anopportunity to see the audience interactwith the group and their families in away that’s not possible in a more formalsetting. We let our hair down and have alot of fun.”

Every Monday evening in June, theband performed free concerts at WestlakePark on Gross Road in Mesquite. The au-dience enjoyed a selection of music rang-ing from classical to whimsical. Eachconcert promises to bring a varied pro-gram sure to delight the audience.

In 2011, as a testament to their dedi-cation to the community, the band recog-nized and hosted a different nonprofit orservice organization each evening. OnJune 6, the band recognized Mesquite So-cial Services and asked that the audiencebring donations of canned goods and sta-ple food items to assist them in providing

much needed help to families. On June13, the band recognized the Boys andGirls Clubs of Mesquite and asked thatthe audience bring school and art sup-plies. On June 20, the band recognizedthe Mesquite Animal Shelter and askedthat the audience bring chew toys andblankets. And on June 27, the band rec-ognized the Wounded Warrior Project andasked that the audience bring financialdonations for the needs of injured servicemembers.

As has been the tradition each year, the last concert was dedicated to the cele-bration of this country’s independenceand is the band’s Fourth of July tribute.Last year, as a special treat, the bandhosted the U.S. 4th Army Band, underthe direction of Howard Bell, who per-formed on June 27. The U.S. 4th ArmyBand, originating at Fort Sam Houstonin San Antonio in the early 1950’s, re-unites every year in a different city. Thisyear the group reunites in Dallas and hasaccepted the invitation to perform atMusic in the Park. Celebrate Mesquite!Held on the evening of the last Friday in January at the

Mesquite Convention Center, this event celebrates the accom-plishments of the previous year, honors many individuals whohave made an outstanding difference in the Mesquite commu-nity, and features the mayor's state of the city address. Businessdress is typical attire for this event.

Rodeo ParadeThe chamber partners with the Exchange Club of Mesquite to

produce this time-honored event. The Rodeo Parade is a 55-year-

old tradition here in Mesquite. Legend has it that the paradewas originally began when the founder of the Mesquite Rodeoand ProRodeo Hall of Famer, Neal Gay, rode through the middleof town (up and down Main Street and Davis and on HeritageSquare) heralding that rodeo season was beginning. Today, theMesquite Championship Rodeo still thrives and the parade re-mains a cherished memory for many generations.

Chamber.Golf.Classic.There aren't many better ways to business than at the golf

course on a beautiful day. The Mesquite chamber has been or-dering up perfect weather for this event for many years.Whether you are a novice player or a little more on the competi-tive side, the Mesquite Chamber encourages all who are inter-ested to come out and play (amateurs only, please).

Casino PartyThe chamber's casino party is a very young event. It made its

debut in 2010 with an outstanding response. The event includesdancing, drinks, hor d'ourves, casino games, door prizes and raf-fles. (Sorry, no money to be won here!)

Taste & TradeMesquite's own trade show has been running for over 15

years now. Every year, dozens of businesses come together toshowcase their services and products. Local restaurants pass outsamples of their featured dishes and everyone has games andprizes for consumers to enjoy. It is a community oriented eventbut not limited or restricted to Mesquite businesses only.

Mesquite has become a logistics hub for the greater Dallas-Fort Worth area, but it also has its share of manufacturing andservice-based industries as well. In eight years, more than 10million square feet of manufacturing and logistics space hasbeen constructed and leased to such companies as Georgia Pa-cific, Unilever, Benjamin Moore Paints and the A.H. Belo Corpo-ration (The Dallas Morning News)

Attraction and creation by the Mesquite Economic Develop-ment Division is a matter of selling the strengths of the area andthe community – business friendly elected leaders, location atthe convergence of four interstate highways, more than ade-quate infrastructure and the use of tax incentives and infra-structure participation in incentive packages.

Mesquite offers selected industries incentives for the expan-sion or relocation of their business to the community. The offer ofincentives is tied to an analysis of the impact on communityservices and to the goals of the community.

Eastfield College was recently host toPresident Barack Obama as he stoppedin Dallas County for some fundraisingand promotion of his American Jobs Act.

President Obama’s visit to EastfieldCollege, part of the Dallas County Com-munity College District, highlights theimportance he has placed on education –not just education at four-year university, but all levels of higher education thatprepare the workforce. Education is acomponent to his jobs stimulus act withpart of the act spending $35 billion tokeep 260,000 teachers working.

Other parts of the act include tax cutsfor businesses as well as some tax relieffor workers and their families. The taxrelief will come in the form of cuttingpayroll taxes in half for 160 million work-ers next year: According to White Housereports, the plan will expand the payrolltax cut passed last year to cut workerspayroll taxes in half in 2012 – providing a$1,500 tax cut to the typical Americanfamily, without negatively impacting theSocial Security Trust Fund.

The American Jobs Act has become atop priority for Obama as he prepares forthe 2012 re-election campaign. Hestopped in Dallas for some fundraisinglunches before heading to Eastfield. There he rallied students, faculty andlocal dignitaries to ask their representa-

tives to at least put the act to a vote sothe country knows where they stand.

“Dallas, that starts now,” Obama said.“That starts with your help. Yesterday, the Republican Majority Leader in Con-gress, Eric Cantor, said that right now, hewon’t even let the jobs bill have a vote inthe House of Representatives. He won’teven give it a vote. Well, I’d like Mr. Can-tor to come down here to Dallas and ex-plain what in this jobs bill he doesn’tbelieve in. Does he not believe in rebuild-ing America’s roads and bridges? Does henot believe in tax breaks for small busi-nesses, or efforts to help veterans?”

The president spoke to a packed-incrowd at Eastfield’s gym. Students linedup early Monday to get free tickets to theevent and lined up even earlier Tuesdayto be the first in line. Mesquite MayorJohn Monaco, Dallas Mayor Mike Rawl-ings and former Dallas Mayor Ron Kirkwere recognized by the president for thework they have done in the area for jobcreation.

“The most powerful person in the freeworld took time to visit us. I am im-pressed that he can come here and makehimself available to people,” Monaco said.“It is a great honor for him to visitMesquite.”

The attendees who lined up earlierhad a cool morning to wait through as

they stood patiently waving banners andstarting impromptu Obama chants. Manystudents felt something like this wouldnot come their way again and wanted totake full advantage. Some even took theday off from work to hear the presidentspeak.

Priscilla Rivera, a student at East-field, said she was completely surprisedto hear the president was coming to herschool.

“[I am] out to see Obama. I wasshocked myself to see he was cominghere,” Rivera said. “But, it is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see him, so it iswell worth the wait. I am skipping worktoday and skipped work yesterday to gettickets. I would have skipped classestoday and would have done anything tosee him.”

Other students were eager to hearwhat he had to say on job creation asmany students are using the communitycollege as a way to train for better jobs.Raquel Torres, an Eastfield student, saidthe chance to listen firsthand is a greatopportunity so students can make the de-cision on whether he is right or wrong ontheir own.

Not everyone waiting for the presi-dent’s arrival were happy to see him. Asmall contingent from Eastfield’s sisterschool in DCCCD, Richland College, was

there to show their support for Republi-can, and perennial presidential candi-date, Senator Ron Paul. Zack Smith, president of the Youth for Ron Paul Rich-land Chapter, said Obama’s tenure up tonow has led the United States down thewrong path, and he cannot see the Ameri-can Jobs Act turning that around in anyway.

“I am here to protest PresidentObama,” Smith said. “Under his leader-ship, our government has grown out ofcontrol. This is just a remix of what wesaw at the beginning of his presidency: alot of stimulus money that goesnowhere.”

The day, ultimately, was about jobsand what education – from grade schoolthrough institutions of higher learning –means to job creation. The importance ofcommunity college in that role is some-thing that is not lost on those who are inthe trenches of educating America’s youth– the teachers.

Matt Hinckley, who is a part of theEastfield College History Department, said it is the work of community collegesthat will help turn the job situation ofAmerica around. For him and other fac-ulty, the fact that the president chose tospeak at the community college high-

lights the impor-tance these institu-tion play.

“This may be thebiggest event in thehistory of Eastfield,”Hinkly said. “I thinkhis visit highlightsthat community col-leges are at the fore-front of democracy, social justice andeconomic uplift.Community collegesare the last besthope for trainingand retraining theeconomically disadvantaged.”

Not all faculty were sold on the pres-ident’s plan, but still praise the presi-dent for his support. Mike Noble, ahistory teacher at Eastfield, said hedoes not agree with some of the presi-dent’s policy and has not been sold onthe jobs act, yet the fact that he is at acommunity college to speak about itshows how important education is tothe president.

“One of the things that we think of asa community is the president is not reallyfamiliar of what is going on locally,”

Noble said. “He is isolated in Washing-ton. It is really impressive when we doget to see the president in our home, areaor workplace. And it seems like he is hereto hear our problems whether we agreewith him or not.”

Noble said his main concern with theact is the cost.

“If successful, I feel like the act will behelpful as the president has laid it out,but financially I don’t know if it is viableat this time,” he said.

It’s time to let the dirt fly every year as rodeo action ramps upand festival-goers celebrate during the Real.Texas.Festival.

at the city’s rodeo center, 1818 Rodeo Drive.“The rodeo is a pivotal part of the festival.

Sometimes it gets overlooked because of themusic. It’s important for us that folks getto experience the rodeo,” said DarenWatkins, Mesquite special events coordi-nator. “The rodeo will be well attendedduring the festival.”

The Mesquite Championship Rodeofirst opened its chutes in 1958. The

rodeo has been an integral part ofthe Real.Texas.Festival. since itsinception and is included in theadmission price to the event. Therodeo features performances bothnights of the festival.

The rodeo’s heritage is ondisplay every spring as thou-sands of onlookers line thestreets around downtown towatch the annual MesquiteRodeo Parade.

The regular rodeo seasonbegins in June and ends in

August. Matinee rodeos

offer the opportunity for students throughout the area to experi-ence the rodeo as part of their curriculum.

The rodeo changed ownership in May 2009 when a group of in-vestors formed Camelot Sports and Entertainment LLC to pur-chase the rodeo and arena from Hicks Sports Group. The newownership group stated that it wanted to re-establish the arenaas a year-round sports and entertainment venue.

After the purchase, Resistol Arena underwent renovationsthat included the addition of two large video boards, new chutes, the creation of the 8 Second Club and suite renovations. Since itsownership change, the arena has hosted mixed martial arts com-petitions, concerts, lucha libre wrestling and boxing events.

Advance ticket sales for the festival are available throughTicketmaster’s website. Tickets are $10 in advance, $15 at thegate and children 12 and under are admitted free. Tickets in-clude free admission to all of that day’s concerts, admission to aperformance of the Mesquite Championship Rodeo, admission tothe Cowboys & Chrome Car Show, a chance to watch the Taste ofMesquite Barbecue Cook-off and free remote parking.

Do I Need to File a Tax Return This Year? You are required to file a federal income tax return if your income is above a certain level, which varies depending onyour filing status, age and the type of income you receive. However, the Internal Revenue Service reminds taxpayersthat some people should file even if they aren’t required to because they may get a refund if they had taxes withheldor they may qualify for refundable credits.Even if you don’t have to file for 2011, here are six reasons why you may want to;1. Federal Income Tax Withheld. You should file to get money back if your employer withheld federal income tax from

your pay, you made estimated tax payments, or had a prior year overpayment applied to this year’s tax.2. Earned Income Tax Credit. You may qualify for EITC if you worked, but did not earn a lot of money. EITC is a refund-

able tax credit, which means yo could qualify for a tax refund. To get the credit you must file a return and claim it.3. Additional Child Tax Credit. This refundable credit may be available if you have at least one qualifying child and

you did not get the full amount of the Child Tax Credit.4. American Opportunity Credit. Students in their first four years of postsecondary education may qualify for as much

as $2,500 through this credit. Forty percent of the credit is refundable so even those who owe no tax can get upto $1,000 of the credit as cash back for each eligible student.

5. Adoption Credit. You may be able to claim a refundable tax credit for qualified expenses you paid to adopt an eli-gible child.

6. Health Coverage Tax Credit. Certain Individuals who are receiving Trade Adjustment Assistance, ReemploymentTrade Adjustment Assistance, Alternative Trade Adjustment Assistance or pension benefits payments from thePension Benefit Guaranty Corporation, may be eligible for 2011 Health Coverage Tax Credit.

Eligible individuals can claim a significant portion of their payment made for qualified health insurance premiums.

For more information about filing requirements and your eligibility to receive tax credits, visit www.irs.gov.

Agent A.R. Alcott, an engineer for theTexas & Pacific Railroad, filed the firstplat for the township of Mesquite withDallas County on May 22, 1873. In lessthan two months later, the first train topass through the area came through thecommunity. The train was traveling fromShreveport to Dallas and it caused quite astir among the new citizens, for withoutthe trains, they might never have come toMesquite.

No one really knows why the town wasnamed “Mesquite.” Speculation, however,is that it was named from the abundantamount of Mesquite trees that dotted thelandscape. In the 1870s, the town properconsisted mainly of a saloon, a blacksmithshop, a confectionery, the post office anddepot, and four homes. The businesses, which were wooden, faced Front Street, the first street in the central area.

It would be 14 years before the townwould seek incorporation. On Dec. 3, 1887,

an election was held in which 25 voteswere cast for the move and 14 against it.Mesquite was the second community to in-corporate (Lancaster was the first) outsideof Dallas proper. The first official leader-ship election of the newly incorporatedtown was held in April, 1888, and J.E.Russell was elected mayor. Others such asR.S. Kimbrough, J.C. Rugel, T.L. Paschall, and G.B. Gross, were all involved in theearly days of the city.

As commerce expanded, citizens’ rum-blings about the creation of an officialtown square grew louder. Those havingbusiness in the town had already beguntying their horses up to hitching posts atthe rear of the buildings to shield the crea-tures from the loud trains. Plus, a newbrick plant opening caused many of thebusiness leaders to want to replace older, wooden structures with more “modern”brick buildings. Nearly 30 years after thetown’s beginning, a public square becamethe center point of Mesquite. Such a move

opened more space for business and thetown grew.

Mesquite grew slowly in population. Inthe first U.S. Census, which was taken in1890, Mesquite had a population of 135.Ten years later, it had only grown by 270people. By 1960, about 27,345 peoplecalled Mesquite home. The estimated 2010population provided by nctcog.org is139,550.

Mesquite Metro Airport is not only a vital part of our City, but it is also something which we should be proud to be ableto support here in our community. Mesquite Metro Airport isan economic engine for us and surrounding communities, re-sponsible for $8.3 million in total economic output, 116 jobsand $3.2 million in payroll. The airport provides several com-munity based services and programs to enhance the health, safety, welfare, and quality of life to area citizens and adja-cent communities including police and fire support, medicalflights, pipeline patrols, and Civil Air Patrol search and res-cue and wildfire patrols.

Future plans for the airport also include a program to cre-ate high-tech, aviation related, industrial development to cre-ate good paying jobs and bolster the City’s tax base. The Cityalso envisions the development of an industrial district; whichis the most compatible land use adjacent to the airport. Theplan does not include cargo or freight related air traffic. Anyincreased truck traffic from the business development wouldbe routed to major thoroughfares.

Furthermore, the Airport Master Plan was funded by theFAA (Federal Aviation Administration) and TxDOT (Texas De-partment of Transportation-Aviation Division). Representa-tives from these agencies, along with local businessrepresentatives, pilots, City Council and City Staff worked di-rectly with a consulting firm, whose expertise is airport plan-ning, to ensure that future development (based on demand)fell well within the safety parameters and guidelines set bythe FAA and also provides for a competitive facility for corpo-rate air travel.

Future growth and development of the airport helps revi-talize our community and brings money and business to ourarea on a daily basis which helps keep property taxes down. The City’s revitalization vision for the airport and the entirecommunity is focused on building value not only in property, but also in the quality of life to all of our citizens.

In 2005, Mesquite Metro was named the “Reliever Airportof the Year” by the Texas Department of Transportation. Isupport the airport and am proud of its facilities, tenants, staff and the positive role it plays in the Metroplex.

I hope you will continue to support our airport, its excel-lent staff, and our fine city as we continue our positive revital-ization efforts.MayorJohn Monaco
