Advisory Council member and acknowledged his or her unique contributions. Tina Hoppe suggested a $95/$75/$45 ticket structure.

4. Experience Industry Management Academic Program Structure – Input: Internship unit increase to 12 units [from 6] Senior Project is shifting to a white paper focused on best practices and industry trends. Support Courses - adding managerial accounting, removing journalism course, adding advanced statistics. Addition of 8 units for added depth in 3 support elective areas [informal/not recognized]: Leadership & Mgmt., Mktg. Tech. & Analytics, and Sustainability & Global Society. Strengthening 'analytics' with variable topics course. Jerusha will present to CAFES Curriculum Committee on April 1. Three Concentrations: Event Planning & Experience Management, Tourism Hospitality & Destination Management, Sport & Recreation Experience Management. Students will attain depth in the curriculum. Sports includes outdoor and community. Sports is strong and growing, this will benefit outdoor, and community students in a repackaging focused on retention, stabilization and growth. Crossover and making teams "click" will occur in core and this is very important to Advisory Council. Design new and different ways for teams to be 'collective' and 'connective' - gap in thinking from 'outcomes' to 'business objectives'. Over-corrections i.e., Google patterns on what makes teams 'click'. Why some teams work and some don't work outcomes that people need to feel safe with same amount of 'speaking time'. The goal is to understand and speak the language. Teams made up of engineers and sales with two different ways of thinking need to understand what they will respond to. Business' fail because they 'fail' at the 'experience' - https://www.warbyparker.com/ is an example of digital>brick & mortar - all about the experience. Advisory Council applauded the RPTA curriculum changes reflective of guidance from October 2015 Industry Advisory meeting.

5. Curriculum Review Breakout Sessions: Advisory Council discussion with strong concerns about current and emerging 'disruptive' market trends and retention rates of Airbnb, uber, and millennial assumptions about travel. Advisory Council member focused on RPTA consensus of report - stating the compromise is for students to 'understand the business objective'.

6. 3. Advisory Council members commented on their shared history of completion of an MBA in order to gain the skills proposed in the new curriculum. Advisory Council members strongly recommended that RPTA graduates understand representing the owner, asset valuation, debt relief, insurance concerns and especially 'why' the owner is doing that. The Cal Poly student's aspirations to own or vest is different from Cornell graduates. Advisory Council wants students to 'dive deeper’ in understanding that 'this is a business', profit & loss, and have a general overview of understanding process. Need to include 'reputation management' and 'retention marketing strategy' - covered in RPTA370 and possibly RPTA320. Farm to table is similar to 'product to consumer’. 'Farm to Table - too focused. The 'linear event is going away. 'Systemic thinking’, i.e., checking in w/smart phone for airlines, conferences, hotels without linear constraints or patterns of A>B>C>D. Advisory Council supported three degrees - under the Experience Industry Management umbrella. Advisory Council requested course outcomes emphasizing understanding reputation management, retention-marketing strategies, and familiarity with industry analytical standards, i.e., asset valuation. Analytics is the back-of-house direction providing data for decisions on direction. Hotels and restaurants - too confining. Hard to find 'true hospitality' = service. Need to use David Evan's 'Futurist' example and be on the upside, not on the downside of where the industry has. True full-service 'hotel' coming close to obsolescence, i.e., Marriott/Sheraton transition to Airbnb and uber [current 20-30 year old], transitional generation [current 30-40 year old], and hotels older travelers or sales people, highway travelers. Hospitality is a narrow term translating to 'hotel'. The need is for a broader term of 'experience' by offering something of additional value. The Center for California Experience - possibility for naming. Need to add value and lessen risk of losing a generation [transitional 30-40 year olds]. Hospitality needs to stay in curriculum. To separate 'hospitality' from tourism or pull it out completely is a mistake. Advisory Council recommends the holistic approach - empower students to go in any direction. Discussion on 'who' and 'how' consumers choose accommodations and travel experiences. These emerging changes are shifting away from traditional values of hotels, shuttles & taxis towards Airbnb, uber, and experiences.

7. RPTA Update: 1. Cornell, February 2016. It is important to look at Cornell's recent merge of three schools into one College of Business - February 2016. UNLV, February 27, 2016 has developed a new plan creating organizational change going back to a department structure as soon as possible. The school suffered from low morale, faculty discontent that is critical of leadership.

8. Student Professional Development Challenge Fund: Advisory Council members are in support of the $1,000 donation. Recruitment of graduates is the main benefit. The possibility of an industry employee mentoring a current RPTA Student in a formal program with meetings. The connection of students working in industry supporting social media, special events, as part of the internship programs. Student support of industry members' support of 'non-profit' events. Inviting RPTA Students to participate as part of the industry member’s contribution. Advisory Council members’ support RPTA Students through 'donating' as part of the event with a residual check donation at end of event, i.e., Chardonnay Symposium’s $2,600 proceeds to RPTA and to WVIT. A campus tour led by RPTA students. The VIP tour given to Chris Myers of George P. Johnson of the Cal Poly campus, CAFES, and RPTA. Initiate formal speaker series for professional development inviting industry member to campus engaging RPTA and University-wide opportunities for engagement.

9. Consultant Report 10. Review Advisory Council Matrix - needed expertise: Weakness of current council talent is in both diversity

heritage and sports management. Tina: Molly wants to be part of it. Bill: Noreen stepping down. Lori is now part of it. Mike: Wyatt Mello makes a good fit. 2. Curriculum: Summer Fee Structure -- 2010 self-support $189 per unit rate or $289 per unit rate. Jerusha: RPTA 465 RPTA Faculty rotate w/ability to supervise intern 6 unites. In example, 3 sections – DH’s section would be at $189, other faculty sections at $289. We are at 6 units for 400 hours. So we’ve proposed 12 units. Richard: workload to faculty 12WTU = 6 units – cost to schedule is doubled. Fixed price regardless of unit count. Brian – build a fee proposal ‘special sessions’ for summer 2017. Bill – needs to be equivalent to spring quarter. Brian – subsidized v. non-subsidized cost. Concern about liability – summer term working but enrolled in Fall quarter. Full cost of recovery for internship for summer. Start building budget now for 2017 [a year in advance]. Bill – we may need to offer both. Brian – summer 2016 offer three sections, and summer 2017 offer 6 unit and 12 unit options. Richard – fixed fee for off-campus in flat fee. 3. Idea to increase spring break Dominican Republic participation, Keri will send DR info to CSU schools for distribution. Spring - RPTA412 for spring – Kevin [analytics], Susan [adventure tourism], Jerusha [wine tourism]. Spring RPTA321-sport mktg., sport ethics, courses that attract students.

4. Everyone is on a 45 load and the other 9 per week are for committees/service. Faculty need to demonstrate that the 9 wtus are being fulfilled before requesting additional assigned time. 3wtu week = 8 hours. Assigned time is a formal process. The reason behind is the inequity among departments.

5. Distributed internship students to Faculty w/focus. The key with supervisions is that we need to know your supervisions – Marni 2, Brian 3, Jerusha 2, Susan 3 [no 330], Keri 3, and Kevin 5. Send email every” quarter [day before] to students for “the opportunity to do 330’s and some faculty have RPTA400 – look for emails. If you have a qualifying projects students can come to individual faculty.

Office hours [5 hours] do not count towards service. Changes at university level coming down [online office hours] possible proposal that faculty be physically present for four hours and online one hour. The rest of service [lecturers don’t do] PRC work, advising student clubs, = 3WTU

8. Workload document is from 1976, old and only thing we have to use shows 8 hours per week. More than 32 hours per week teaching. We need to rethink how we approach this thing, and that service is an important part of the job, and how it relates to your career goals. Scholarship needs to be carved out and can come out of service hours but I resist this. So a possible draft might be made up of 9WTU teaching, 3WTU service, 3WTU Scholarship.

9. This would be a nice load, more balance, it appeals to me. We did develop a draft statement about service: do not expect assign time unless you are doing above 8 hours of service. Some departments that are out of balance. This is a draft statement. Brian will serve on this committee for EIM.

10. What I want is people to think about what is reasonable – draft at this point. Expectation is for service – draft conceptual goal is the 9/3/3.

11. Introductions of part-time lecturers – joining us [Kirk, Rene, Jenn, Jamie]. 12. Expectations have evolved – current expectations for PT and FT – guns and butter – cannot benefit both.

Proven. Teaching and Scholarship – scholarship is becoming a bigger and bigger focus. No expectations have been eliminated. Hard to do both. Difficult to measure quality teaching. Easy to measure how much money you’ve brought in for grants. Qualitative student mentoring is difficult to measure. Teaching is still at the core of what we do at Cal Poly. We focus on scholarship. We focus on research. So we institute the teacher/scholarship model that is an unfunded mandate. We are challenged with we need to support that scholarship and support the teaching side. We are going to be tapping those that are excellent teachers.

13. Chair of the distinguished teaching committee – watched teachers all over the university and the evaluation is always so interesting. Connection with students. Get to know their names is hard and challenging.

14. Expectations are clear and stick by your expectations. Students know that you care. Students don’t suffer from a rigorous course.

15. Student’s evaluations have a role. Invite your peers [including Nanine and Bill] to give your feedback for simple things that instructor could do to turn around the classroom experience.

16. How do you convince tenure track faculty to open up? Because of the system that is in place – the tenure track doesn’t want to admit vulnerability. Is the mentor circle a way?

17. Tenure track WILL be evaluated in an ‘evaluative capacity’ so it’s more imperative that you invite peers into your classes for one more change of input. Have a rehearsal that doesn’t count and gives you an additional chance for corrective action before official/formal review.

Page 11: Experience Industry Management Department Meetings January ... · Experience Industry Management Department Meetings 2016-2017 . January 13, 2016. ... Future RPTA Internship [2 years

18. Part of it is culture and we cannot change the university or college but we can change the culture of the department – whatever the score is we can improve it – from a 50 to a 60. If you are person visiting a class – just be kind and find things that people are doing well and find a way to deliver the message. Complimentary delivery is easier than constructive criticism. The culture of 97% of Cal Poly tenure track receive tenure. So there is that pressure to say what the good qualities are – but we don’t want to put bad things in their file. Kirk says ‘continuous improvement’ is a great method. Provost said last Thursday, “don’t give someone tenure if they are not teaching well”. Tenure track need to be vulnerable and need to be able to ask ‘how can I do better?’ Address the issue and seek help than avoid – does not go in the file. Evaluation is based on what you submit – real things not the informal stuff. Mentors will use their position to support you.

19. Student evaluations will be reviewed by people that have not seen us teach, so how much weight is put on these as opposed to other aspects? Student evaluations are very subjective. Student mood is more variable. Response rate may be low. Low sample size. And different sections [maybe earlier in the day] may have much different results. CAFES uses % students that agree. Student comments are where the weights or value. Only when it is written many times “assignments returned slowly” or “talking too fast”. Student evaluations are now a formal part of the process. It’s important to know that the information is available to read. Stop by and say hi – anytime you don’t have to have any reason.

20. EIM teaching goals -- Keri: Summer Undergraduate Research Experience – one of Nanine program. Worked with Paul Kreider – was a great program – ten weeks with very few parameters – survey/lit review/present poster/research journal articles. I thought it was great for us. I think Paula like it. She got paid. Paula will go on to work for Marni and Keri as a research student.

21. Kevin: I had two students – each student got paid $1500. Faculty member got $1500 each or 3000. Internet usage – how much information you get from internet vs. radio. With 6 categories Jack Elder and Candice Walton – they tried to do data analysis but couldn’t so I took that over. If you get more information from internet you are likely to spend more money. Good experience for students and myself. I want to submit a manuscript down the road and want to take advantage of this next summer. Both students are interested in continuing this for senior projects.

22. EIM teaching goals – page two of doc ‘2010-2016 strategic plan’ – 23. Goal #1 – we have declined in overall teaching excellence – we are not meeting the goal – so how are we

going to meet the goals. Common themes: clarity of assignments, expectations for grading, sticking to dates,

24. How are we going to get back to ‘teaching excellence’ 25. Marni will direct/facilitate/implement/leading an activity: what I want you to do is pull out a piece of

paper – give you ten minutes. Individual reflection: what is good about your teaching? And other side: what needs improvement? Individual – bullets. Now get in groups and discuss – get ideas from things that we need to work on. People will suggest, comment, and Marni will rotate. Now have each tenure track faculty member report what the ‘takeaway’ is. Developing a teaching identity – developing your identity as a teacher. We have a tendency to teach as we have seen others teach – and not being myself. When I looked inward: ultimately changed my whole understanding and development as a teacher. I needed to bring ‘myself’ to the classroom in order to connect. Instead of the know-it-all that I was projecting. Trying to be ‘professorial’. When I was who I am my teaching blossomed. Looking inward and realizing that who we are as a person should come out in our teaching. We do not need to be an ‘authoritarian’ unless of course you are than be the best ‘authoritarian’. We are fortunate that everyone cares about teaching.

26. Now Marni presents ‘planned workshop development assignments analyses. Next steps is to have a workshop is to bring in an assignment and develop the assignment. Encourage people to think about this is that we all need to work on our assignments this quarter and one winter quarter. How can we facilitate

Page 12: Experience Industry Management Department Meetings January ... · Experience Industry Management Department Meetings 2016-2017 . January 13, 2016. ... Future RPTA Internship [2 years

this? Involve CLT? What is the focus? Marni would you be the gatekeeper for the first topic? How about coming up with a topic now? Student evaluation takeaway would be developing assignments.

27. Task the senior faculty of each group from today’s group – however you want to do it in small groups. Marni – so here’s what we are doing – three groups with part-time, tenure track, and tenured faculty. How it relates back to objectives. a. Curriculum/Program Evaluation – 2015-16 Assessment Report b. Assessing all four standards – look at the results and go back into the classroom to help develop

the topic. Our students struggle with facilitating diverse populations. How can we bring these ideas in our classrooms?

c. We should look at the standards as how they apply to all classes we teach in the core not just classes associated with assessment. How can we teach better and reflect more?

28. RPTA students – 29 incoming EOP students. 2 or 3 in scholars program. We are doing the “herd competency” [Amy Herd developed competency of entry level professional in this field] assessment in 110 and 463 and taking them and doing an independent sample t-test. How competent do students feel at the beginning of their career and how competent do they feel at the end of their career? Change over time.

29. 7.0 is the analysis from last year – students believe that they can communicate well, however not confident in other areas. What classes are part of the assessment? Next assessment plan is part of the docs – we need to put together our plans for the next five years. Direct measurement is the agency supervisors evaluation of the student, indirect is a self-evaluation. Measuring the students’ knowledge through exam. Self-analysis is indirect measure of this knowledge. Rubric has several areas of evaluation for direct measure of student’s knowledge. Introduction – development – mastery – maybe taken during internship not 463.

30. Document senior exit interview – alumni report – in the senior exit interview, the students think they learned a lot from extra-curricular activities. Design/implementation events but they are not comfortable in data analysis – not comfortable with back end of analysis. BUS346 works or not depending who is teaching the course.

31. Budget/financial analysis is something needs to be addressed – 2017 students will need to take financial accounting and managerial accounting. So this is not news – but still coming up.

32. One of the things is that the perception is that any rec class are easy grades. We need to think of that in terms of rigger and also comments about busy works. Their comments support some of the other things we are hearing.

33. Alumni evaluation -- same items that we are measuring with the internships – the ones that come up strong – creating effectively – working in groups rated highest – diverse populations, interpreting financial data.

34. Need to have tough skin as we ‘continuous improvement’. 35. When a course is approved – it goes through a long process. Academic Senate is thorough as they go

through the apps for new course. Based on the rigger of the course [2 year process]. They take a good look at course learning objectives. It’s important that when you are developing your syllabus that we meet the learning objectives. If you need the correct learning objectives – ask for it and Jerusha will send. Post them to One Drive. The formal course description – can be elaborated however the ‘approved’ description needs to be part of your syllabus. The language is rigid. You can add to the course description.

36. 7.0 standards are ‘learning objectives’. In 257 add measuring diversity objective -- 12e – important we should be setting goals for ourselves – last year we did this and this is our benchmarks and this year we will shoot above this. I want students to understand how decisions are made long-term. Last year 60% understood and next year I want 80% understanding. Can be indirect measures also, not just direct.

37. Alumni survey at 70% and move up to 75% so that we show that we can improve on. Accreditation – if we are looking for benchmark than they need to be there. The instructor needs to be developed.

Page 13: Experience Industry Management Department Meetings January ... · Experience Industry Management Department Meetings 2016-2017 . January 13, 2016. ... Future RPTA Internship [2 years

38. 257 is an intro however where is the development and the mastery? 39. Diversity – where are your resources? Intro, develop, mastery 40. ‘Supervision’ of diverse populations? We don’t have that ‘supervision’ piece, as the students are not

prepared in ‘supervising’ diverse groups or ‘facilitate’ diverse groups. 41. Micro-aggression – what does it mean? Our students know however, we don’t know about them? 7.01,

02, 03, 04 – all this conversation should be part of how we interpret the changes we can make. It needs to be part of the report. The standards are very different than they were before. When we do the privilege walk it is amazing as the students converse. There are individuals that can tell stories about their struggles and their success.

42. Where are we articulating these benchmark standards? In assessment by October 30. Last year this was the achievement level and next year this will be what I achieve. At the end of spring quarter – I’ll ask for you to send your data. I will develop a matrix – for diversity.

43. Program Review – meeting every other week starting Oct. 3. Every course needs to look the same – standardized. Kathy to get accreditation notice of intent [due Oct. 1] and pay annual mx fee [March 2017]. Read COPART handbook and put on PolyLearn. Joe Ragsdale, Landscape Architecture – advocate of the program. Jennifer Jipson, youth research associate dean? Full? Rachel Fern Flores – big supporter of the program. Talk to Nanine and Richard for referrals for reviewers.

44. Assessment plan due – Ru will turn in plan by Oct 30.External reviewers [appointed at end of the year] – will be no conflicts of interests with university that has biased view of program. Full draft May 8, review, submit to dean. CV limited page and format – due April 15. Amy used to be the assessment for School of Education.

45. 7 Goals – revise 2010-2015 Strategic Plan a. Do we want to align/simplify to align with CAFES? b. Jerusha typing up Goals/Objectives/Actions c. Paralleling CAFES Goals/Objectives d. Goal 1, 2, 3, 4, e. One-stop – can look at student records – read the notes from previous meeting. Jerusha and Bill

will be part of the pilot program. f. ICMA and AP are both being re-vamped. g. Reminder promote/we are having students meet with concentration coordinators – go to their

PolyPlanner and make sure it reflects the planning. Also check their DPR too.

Met w/Mike Casola and Mike Mancheck. Grant followed up w/VP Pebble Beach. This relationship will be developing again. Then Bill had a conference call w/a woman that is with VP Culture and People [HR] Allie Gaffin for Pacifica Hotels and is looking for talent [same for Pebble Beach]. Upcoming meeting w/Bacara about same issue – getting talent. Spoke w/Terrance of Dolphin Bay re: Chardonnay Symposium. John Martino runs the Chumash Casino, Mike Casola spoke with him about EIM. Bill is meeting with John this week.

We’ve developed a list of 15-20 ‘good fits’ to set-up meetings. Next step is to set up an external hospitality task force. Bill developed a 6-7 year plan. JG King, Mike Hale, and others to serve on task force. Bill has a meeting with ILPRA in December.

Three programs mean three program reviews. Without the hospitality, we won’t get the donors. What is the mesh of these three things: resort & lodging, food & beverage, Tourism and DM?

Temple University, school of sport, tourism and hospitality management: where is events? Put event [San Diego] – in both degrees – Sport, Event, and Recreation Management and Hospitality, Event, and Destination Management. Unique niche to have sports and events together. Destination management can do the same thing. If we only had two degrees I’d go back to Tourism, Hospitality & Destination

Page 14: Experience Industry Management Department Meetings January ... · Experience Industry Management Department Meetings 2016-2017 . January 13, 2016. ... Future RPTA Internship [2 years

Management and Sport Management How we are going to get where we are going to go – in past seven years same model: library orientation, senior project workshop, and ad hoc course instruction/less senior project workshops. Vote on new majors: see photo of white board. Advisory council – present and discuss curriculum. New students fall quarter. December deadline – curriculum new degree cycle

a. If there is no school of hospitality – move forward anyways? Yes Stay as is – status quo is an option – doesn’t make much sense

Transition in 2017 and make note in 2019. Two degrees will help us grow. Sport and event in degree title than we are going to grow. And capitalizing on major trend. Still not sure, about hospitality – resources will support this degree. Core will be the same: experience industry management and then new classes for lodging, food & beverage classes and sport needs some.

46. International opportunities: Keri – DR class offered this winter – similar set up as last year. Itinerary same and price went up a bit $2200 [no air]. So after this it’s open for another to take this over. Literally starting all over with forms with learning objectives. 2018 what about – part of this is who is interested and how we are going to figure this out? Costs might be? Recommend keeping some of the core information the same so that it retains some of the momentum. Recommendations on a process? Are other people interested? Kevin is interested in spring break 2018. And interested in potential other field trips also. More hoops to jump through if it’s not a break from classes. We need to fit it with purpose – with the course learning outcomes. Susan, New Zealand also has invited faculty/student exchange.

Kevin visited the convention center that he had been working for the past several years and a high-ranking import/export trade show [largest], special delegate [very important]. He is interested in having Cal poly students work at this trade show. This is high level so it takes time – will need to happen at a higher level [than Kevin].

We need to understand the China market beyond how you run an event. Broader perspectives – inclusivity and diversity. Talking to locals. Committee: come up with a strategy. Learning objectives. Funding. Rotation. Experiencing other cultures. Take into consideration sabbaticals [2018-19]. Rotation with names. Realize that there is no additionally funding – for international travel. When Marni put in all that time -- only 5 students [GE New Zealand]. Make sure our students are more aware of international opportunities. Doesn’t make sense to do DR three years in a row. China is not ready for us right now – takes time. International Engagement Committee: Marni, Susan, Keri, Kevin.
