Dharawal was proclaimed a national park in 2012. Pristine ecosystems, waterfalls, extensive upland swamps, steep-sided sandstone gorges, swimming holes and rock shelters are just some of the many fascinating landscape features you can explore.

Dharawal National Park is the perfect antidote to city living. At 6,500 hectares, the park supports a huge range of birds and animals, superb plant life, and features tracks to walk or ride along with scenic spots to relax.

‘Dharawal’ refers to the language group of the local Aboriginal people who have continued their relationship with the area for more than 15,000 years. Their long occupation of the area is evidenced by many Aboriginal sites, making the area among the richest in Aboriginal heritage in the Sydney region.

The Dharawal National Park is one of Australia’s newest national parks and is an environment rich in biodiversity and cultural heritage.

One of the best ways to discover the national park is to join a guided Aboriginal walking tour. The tours, which are held on the second Saturday of each month from February to November, give visitors a fresh look at the landscape from a Koori perspective.

The tours are led by Aboriginal Discovery Ranger, Deidre Martin, who shares stories of the local Aboriginal tribes and their culture, while also showing visitors the park’s waterfalls, steep-sided sandstone gorges, swimming holes and rock shelters.

The tours give visitors the opportunity to explore the strong relationship the Dharawal people have with the land, water, plants and animals, by showcasing plants native to the region and demonstrating how they were used for food and medicine.

“Through guiding these tours, I hope to increase understanding about our culture, customs and identity,” said Deidre.

During seasonal school holidays, special Sensory Walks are led by Discovery Ranger Jacinta Rheinberger. These walks are accessible to all and specially designed to learn about the park using all five of your senses. See, touch, taste, smell the diverse native vegetation and hear the unique sounds of the bush.

”I hope that by participating in the sensory walk it reminds people to use all of their five senses when out in nature, take it slow and enjoy the wonders and beauty that the natural world holds,” Jacinta said. With more than 500 species of native flora and a variety of native animals including birds, mammals, reptiles and a koala colony, the Dharawal National Park is an important ecological site that is open year round for visitors to explore and enjoy.

O’HARES CREEK TRACK AND LOOKOUTFor some of the best views over the gorge, make tracks to the O’HaresCreek Lookout. The 2.8km return walk is an easy grade and the scenic location offers views to the picturesque rockpools far below.

JINGGA WALKING TRACKFor avid walkers, the Jingga Walking Track offers a challenging 2.8km return walk at a hard grade. A scenic reward is on offer for those who undertake the walk, with the track leading to a spectacular waterhole along O’Hares Creek.

10T MANAGEMENT TRAILOne of the most popular walks in the park is the 10T Management Trail. Despite its rather uninspiring name, this medium grade trail will take walkers to one of the most scenic locations within the park – Minerva Pool. This wide pool with a rock island in the middle is creek-fed by a small waterfall. The 2.4km return trail will take you to a viewing platform or you can follow the fork in the trail down to the water.

10B CYCLE TRAILIf you’re looking to take your mountain bike out for a long ride, the 10B Cycle Trail offers the perfect day out. At 15km long, it starts from the Appin Road entrance of Dharawal National Park, and follows an unsealed road through open forest and woodlands along a sandstone ridge. This is a great bike ride for small groups and families with older children.

The Georges River and surrounds are a highly significant landscape feature of the Sydney region and the Campbelltown environment. It is home to much of the biodiversity that can be found in the region, including an active koala colony and provides immense scenic value to the area.

The Georges River was an important focal point for Aboriginal life and culture in the southern Sydney region, offering food, transport and dreamtime links. Several major language groups existed along the river: Eora to the east, Dharug to the west, north and north-east, Dharawal to the south and Gandangara in the far south-west.

The early 1800s saw European settlers migrating to the areas along the Georges River. Much of the catchment was cleared for farmlands and housing, however, the banks stayed relatively untamed due to their rugged slopes.

Campbelltown is home to some of the best bushland in the Sydney region, from closed forests, to open woodlands and the pristine waterways of the Georges and Nepean Rivers – it really does have it all!

Mitchell Clark is the Coordinator of Open and Natural Spaces at Campbelltown City Council and is responsible for maintaining the integrity and the diversity of our local bushland.

“The local bushland found in our city is very diverse and unique with sandstone vegetation occurring to the east and shale-clay based soils occurring to the west. Both of these soil types support different vegetation and a large variety of plants and animals, some of which are only found in little pockets through-out NSW.”

“We are very lucky in Campbelltown to have recreational areas where the community can get lost in. Our beautiful bushland easily access our key waterways and the best part is that it’s all within a stone’s throw from the city centre.” Mitchell said.

“Did you know that Keith Longhurst Reserve in Kentlyn, is named after local resident and passionate environmentalist Keith Longhurst. The trails take you through sandstone and heath vegetation and down some steep stairs to The Basin and the pristine Georges River, the perfect spot for a dip on a hot summer’s day.”

“Campbelltown hosts a range of threatened and endangered species such as platypus and koalas. Platypus are very elusive and have been spotted in various sections of the Georges River, you might be lucky to spot one at the above reserves early morning! Campbelltown is best known for its Koala population and one of the healthiest, disease free populations in the state. Spotting them in the wild is always a thrill, even after five years managing our local bushland.”

“There are many exciting programs happening in the Campbelltown area and many ways that the community and visitors to the area can get involved and learn about this unique environment.”

Campbelltown, settled in the early 1800s, is an historically significant region that has developed into a dynamic and energetic city.

Rich in history and character, links to the city’s colonial settlement are reflected in the large number of heritage properties scattered throughout the city, including Glenalvon House, Quondong Cottage and the Queen Street Heritage Precinct.

The city’s innovative and dynamic arts scene is showcased at the Campbelltown Arts Centre, which features a calendar of contemporary exhibitions and performances, as well as an interactive outdoor Sculpture Garden and tranquil Japanese Garden, complete with teahouse, koi fish and waterfalls.

Campbelltown Theatre Group operates from the historic Town Hall. The group have been performing since 1956 and are the oldest and largest theatre group in the region. The group is dedicated to being a leader in the local arts community.

Over five decades, Suzanne Archer has established herself as a painter, sculptor and installation artist. Primarily known for her large textural paintings, her work has been shown and collected by many institutions across Australia and abroad, including Campbelltown Arts Centre. Suzanne has maintained an impressive career that cements her position within abstraction and expressionism, a position defined by the objects and thematics she presents in her work.

Suzanne has strong ties to Campbelltown, living and working in the bush suburb Wedderburn for over 30 years where a number of resident artists play a significant role in contributing to the artistic and cultural fabric of the region. In 2019 Campbelltown Arts Centre will present Suzanne Archer’s 50 year retrospective exhibition titled,

Suzanne Archer: Song of the Cicada. A corresponding monograph of the same title will also be launched at Campbelltown Arts Centre in late 2019, celebrating this local artist’s illustrious career.

The exhibition will explore three major themes which recur in Suzanne’s practice - death and skeletons, travel and landscapes - and will trace Suzanne’s artistic success and personal tales. Linking these three major themes is Suzanne’s recurring fascination with text, pointing toward the diversity of mediums in Suzanne’s practice that span painting, sculpture, works on paper and sound. The exhibition will also feature new work commissioned by Campbelltown Arts Centre proclaiming that for Archer, there is still a lot more to come.

The Campbelltown Arts Centre is a state-of-the-art facility delivering a broad range of contemporary cultural programs in both the visual and performing arts. The centre features a range of exhibitions and artist collaborations each year and is an ideal venue for exploring the culture of Campbelltown or holding a private function.

Features include a sun-filled atrium, 180 seat performance studio, rehearsal studios, workshop space, exhibition galleries, Japanese Garden and teahouse, outdoor Sculpture Garden, cafe and an outdoor amphitheatre.

The centre hosts an annual program of workshops, visual arts, music, dance, live art and emergent practices.

The Japanese Garden has a traditional waterfall, koi pond, timber bridge, stonework paths and flourishing plants. The teahouse was a Bicentennial gift from Koshigaya, Campbelltown’s sister city in Japan. The garden and teahouse symbolise the beliefs and religion of both Shinto and Zen Buddhism.

The outdoor Sculpture Garden is a Centenary of Federation project, featuring a range of changing and permanent exhibitions and is full of works by renowned artists.

Felicity has a long and varied history as an actor and director and has belonged to Campbelltown Theatre Group Inc (CTGi) for a number of years. Felicity was recently awarded a Life Membership for her contribution to the group. She served on the Executive Committee in various positions including most recently, four years as Vice President. During her time with the group, Felicity has initiated many innovations, from being the first director to use a projector within a production (back in the 1990s) to digital website innovations for group members.

Campbelltown Theatre Group’s home is the historic Town Hall Theatre in Queen Street. Next year the group celebrates 40 years in this theatre, although they have been in operation since 1956 and are one of the longest established community theatre groups in Australia. It is here that Felicity began her association with the group.

Felicity’s acting career with CTGi began back in 1997 when she appeared as Mrs. Lacey in Rebecca - a play based on the famous Daphne du Maurier novel of the same name. Acknowledging her talent as an actor, she was cast in a number of different major roles in plays and musicals

with the group, her most recent as Mattie Fae in August: Osage County. Felicity started directing for CTGi with many well loved shows like One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, Arsenic and Old Lace, The Thirty Nine Steps, Sleeping Beauty and Of Mice and Men to name a few. Felicity has also worked as an actor and director at the Riverside Theatre, Parramatta, Casula Power House, The Depot Theatre, Tap Gallery and the IPAC at Wollongong and many other independent theatre and film companies.

Felicity is well known for her association with the Short and Sweet Drama festival in Sydney both as an actor and director since its inception 18 years ago. She was a finalist over six times as actor and director. She is also involved with film and has recently completed roles in the feature films According to Otto and Fragmentary as well as roles in the web series Romp and After Nightfall (season 2). She has a long list of short films to her acting and directorial credit.

Felicity recently retired from what she termed “her other job” as a Speech Pathologist after a long and distinguished career over 35 years. Felicity says, “Now I’m free to throw myself headlong into theatre and film pursuits.”

For lead vocalist, Paul Grierson, of award winning Australian country music band, Simply Bushed, becoming a musician was inevitable.

“I was a born a musician, I remember asking for my first guitar when I was only five,” explains Paul. “Growing up, our family would often go and see live music at a number of the local venues and I loved the energy of the music. We would also go to lots of bush dances and I think that is where my love of country music all started.”

For Paul, starting his own band was the next logical step in his musical evolution. Simply Bushed was the result.

“We are an Australiana act, based on the historical bush bands of the past, but with a modern polished, version, full of relevant, original and award winning music about Australia,” said Paul. “Our style is probably best summed up by the statement that we start our shows with – we sing Australian songs about Australia”.This motto has served well for the band, who has won a slew of awards over the years.

“My band has been going for more than 20 years, 10 of those with my current band partner, Chris Reiger,” said Paul. “We still love what we do and that makes it easy to keep on going. People always feel proud to be an Australian when we are finished with them at the end of our shows!”

Despite performing to audiences all over the country for Paul, there is nothing better than performing to a local crowd. “We always have heaps of friends in the audience and on stage we recognise a face from the local shop or someone you see down the street all the time,” said Paul.

In 2018, Simply Bushed powered on in the country music scene, with their recent hit and internet sensation, “No More Holdens.” The year of 2019, will see the band perform at Music in the Mulga and adventure outside of Australia for performances in Germany. These world record holders, who formed the biggest bush dance in the world, at the Country Music Festival in Tamworth earlier this year, are guaranteed to get your boots tapping on a great night out.

Local musician, Karleigh Rose has always been drawn to music and is now a prominent artist around Campbelltown and the Macarthur region.

Karleigh grew up with a love for music from a very young age and wrote her first full song at eight years of age. Karleigh says, “I started singing and taking piano lessons at nine. My parents were always encouraging and supportive and I’m so grateful that they picked up my love for music.” Since then, Karleigh has gone on to sing and play music fulltime and make a living from something she loves.

Karleigh has sung and coordinated music for large scale events around NSW, weddings, festivals, as well as award ceremonies and private functions. Karleigh released her first EP in 2013 and is currently working to release and record new music this year.

Karleigh’s sound encapsulates all genres of music. ”I think it is amazing how music can impact people. I love the deep, soulful sounds that send

shivers down your spine, the big belted notes that leave your jaw on the ground and the fun, cleverly written stories in country songs. All these things contribute to who I am as an artist and how I write and create my own music.”

Karleigh is often seen at venues around Campbelltown and says, “I absolutely love performing locally. I love that the region is embracing more live music and seeing the atmosphere come alive in venues, is so exciting! There are some amazing artists in the local region and I really credit venues who encourage and promote live music. Agencies such as Macarthur Entertainment have worked so hard to bring music back to our local area and they make it so easy for people to find and book artists for any event.”

Karleigh is constantly working towards bigger and better things musically, striving for big dreams but also enjoying the moment and the place she is in. “Each year that passes has been more exciting than the last and I cant wait to see where this musical journey takes me. “

Discover all that shines in the night sky and gaze on the moon, planets, nebulae and galaxies, when you visit the observatory on one of their public viewing nights.

Located at Western Sydney University Campbelltown Campus, these family friendly evenings are run by the Macarthur Astronomical Society in conjunction with Astrophysicist and Observatory Director, Dr Ragbir Bhathal.

The observatory is used for research and is the home of the Australian Optical SETI (OZ OSETI) Project. It is the only dedicated optical SETI project in the Southern Hemisphere. It is searching for nanosecond laser pulses from outer space with very sensitive and sophisticated equipment

“Established in 2000, Campbelltown Rotary Observatory is an excellent example of an innovative science partnership between Western Sydney University, the community and industry/business,” said Dr Bhathal.

“It is an exciting scientific and educational resource for the community, science teachers, and schools. It complements local libraries and Arts Centre by providing a scientific and educational experience.”

More than one million Australians are drinking craft beer during an average month, almost double the number just five years ago. Craft beer, although relatively new to the Australian scene, has really taken off in the last few years. Walk into any bar these days and chances are, craft beer occupies prime beer real estate.

Craft brewing happens every day at the Otis Brewing Co, at its impressive on-site microbrewery located at Rydges Hotel, Campbelltown. Five boutique beers, as well as a range of seasonal beers and ciders, are brewed onsite at Otis and can be enjoyed straight from the bar.

Regular craft brews include the Pug’s Pale Ale, the Silver Fox Amber Ale, the Broken Antler Hefewiezen, the Mad Boar Pilsner and the cream of the crop – the Original Ghost Lager. The latter has earned plaudits from reviewers. Fairfax’s Good Food Guide gave the lager, with its distinctive branding, the following review: “Besides possessing a disturbing logo, the lager also has fantastically complex malt and citrus flavours.” Even more

importantly, a big thumbs up from patrons has made the lager the brewery’s bestseller.

The craft beers are particularly popular with the young professional after work crowd, who head to OTIS Bar on a Friday night to enjoy a drink and live entertainment.

Just one staff member works at the microbrewery, beermaster Alan Barclay, who has been there since they began brewing 10 years ago. Alan is very passionate about his product.

“Brewing craft beer is a slower, more refined process,” said Alan. “You are there and you are making the product. Every batch is slightly different.”

The microbrewery no doubt contributes to the popularity of OTIS Bar, which underwent a $700,000 refurbishment in late 2015, transforming into a sophisticated sanctuary designed for the enjoyment of gourmet food, chic cocktails, earthy brews and live acoustic music.

Since Seta Berbari came to town, the locals have been lapping up luscious lunches and bountiful breakfasts and great coffee.

Seta has been in the cafe industry for 15 years, opening her hip urban chic cafe on Dumaresq St, Campbelltown, in 2015. Seta’s Cafe is somewhere people can meet, talk and be together. “I wanted a place of solitude, relaxation, somewhere people can just enjoy being themselves. I want people to feel when they come to my café it’s like home.”

Seta’s Cafe does feel like home, when Seta’s offers some of her home cooked favourites. A popular current menu item draws from Seta’s Egyptian heritage. Shakshuka - a tomato based dish with beans, herbs and spices topped with two eggs and served with crusty bread. “The menu options are constantly evolving and changing. We look to use seasonal produce sourced locally to serve customers fresh, flavoursome meals. One of my favourites is the smashed avocado with ricotta and citrus. The team is

always happy to adapt menu items for those with allergies and food intolerances where possible.”

Seta’s Cafe is not just your average cafe; Seta’s creative team came up with an idea to hold fermentation classes. “It was fantastic to see so many people from different backgrounds together in the cafe learning about fermentation, its health benefits and enjoying each other’s company.”

Seta also likes to gather her customers for Trivia nights held at the cafe. “ The Trivia Nights are a great night for customers to make up their own table of friends and have a laugh, whilst enjoying dinner.”

Seta’s journey and dream of owning a cafe has come to fruition and Seta’s focus is on continuing to provide a community cafe that not only provides a variety of healthy and indulgent foods, but a place where community events and classes continue to take place, providing a welcoming space and atmosphere for others to also follow their dreams.

Love for people, in particular the community of Campbelltown, combined with a love of healthy, innovative food, is the passion that drives Shefali Pall, Head of Product Development and Marketing at Alkalizer Café, one of Campbelltown’s newest dining establishments.

“Whenever I am asked what made me want to get into the restaurant industry, the answer is simple…people. I have always loved food, as well as creating and innovating with ingredients, but I also love meeting different personalities. Working in hospitality is the perfect answer for combining my passion of food, together with meeting new people.” Shefali said.

Alkalizer was conceptualised with an aim to provide a way to help people achieve a healthy lifestyle and when developing the business plan, the only place Shefali could envision establishing the cafe was in Campbelltown.

“Campbelltown is my home, my heart, my love,” she said.

“I looked at many other locations to establish Alkalizer, but every time, my passion and my love for Campbelltown and the local community would bring me back.”

In late 2016, Alkalizer opened its flagship store in the heart of Campbelltown CBD. The café has a unique offering – alkalized water is served, and is also used to make specialty coffee and their own range of gourmet teas. All menu items are nutritionally planned, demonstrating that not only can meals be healthy, but also delicious.

The philosophy to create balance and infuse positive energy into people’s lives is important to Shefali and her team.

“That is why all the profits from the sale of our alkalized water are donated to the SPS Foundation, The institute supports deaf and blind children in Ludhiana, India and long-term, our hope is to raise enough money to fund a Braille computer.”
