According to a research from Gartner Inc. - By 2013, the no. of people accessing internet from their smartphones or tablets will exceed those using laptops or desktops. These figures show that a huge opportunity lies in front of the Telcos, but it may also pose a risk to consumer health, claim certain organizations. Recently Inter Ministerial Committee has recommended to reduce Electro Magnetic radiation from Telecom tower by one – tenth from the current levels which industry players claim would increase cost of deploying and operating telecom networks. Though mounting evidence is available on the internet describing health and environmental hazards due to EMF radiation, Telco's strongly oppose them stating that such studies have developed a negative attitude towards the subject. If science is to be believed, RF waves lie in the non- ionizing part of spectrum which means they do not have the capability to cause genetic damage. A constant monitor by industry bodies is the need of an hour while the debate is still open. I hope you’ll find the contents of this issue value adding and interesting. Drop in any queries or suggestions you may have at [email protected].

Like every growth story, India’s successful telecom industry is also not free from challenges. Undoubtedly, the ever increasing subscriber base and continuous innovations in the industry have helped in creating new opportunities, but those have also led to significant environmental concerns.

What’s the buzz all about The Delhi High Court recently issued notices to the central and the Delhi governments on a plea to ban high-frequency mobile phone towers in residential areas as according to the reports; its radiation causes health hazards. From September 1 this year, India will lower the level to one tenth of the prevailing standard - from 9.2 w/m2 (watt per square metre) to 0.92 w/m2. If Stastics to be believed, India's current radiation exposure limit (9.2 watt/m2) for mobile towers is higher than countries like Russia (0.2 w/m2) and China (0.4 w/m2). In USA, Canada and Japan, however, the radiation exposure limit is much higher (12 w/m2). The department of telecommunications has also issued directions for reducing the specific absorption rate (SAR), a measure of the amount of radiofrequency energy absorbed by the body while using a phone. In May last year, WHO classified radiofrequency EMF associated with a wireless phone as 'possibly carcinogenic to humans‘.

Telecom Radiations: Terminologies There are two kinds of radiations associated with mobile phones – the risk of radiation from the handset, and the risk of radiation for those living near telecommunication towers. Tower Radiations : Radio signals are part of everyday life, emitted both by natural sources like the sun, the Earth and the ionosphere, and by artificial sources such as: mobile phone base stations, broadcast towers, radar facilities, remote

controls, medical, electrical and electronic equipment. Cellular towers work in the non-ionizing spectrum which means they do not have the capability to cause and genetic damage. Moreover, the RF emissions from these sources are several multifold times lower than the safety limits set by international EMF standards bodies. Mobile Radiations : The other factor that requires consideration apart from the Tower Radiations is the Mobile Radiation or radiation from the handsets. Mobile radiation is measured according to its specific absorption rate (SAR), a measure of power absorbed per mass of body weight. Each phone has its own SAR rating, with the lowest number indicating the lowest emissions. Among the phones currently on the market, the range extends between about 0.3 and 1.6, which is the upper safety limit in the US and Canada.

The Telecom Operators are resisting the government move of cutting the radiation limits to a tenth from September 1. According to them, Lowering of EMF limits will give no health benefits but affect services. Reduced radiation from towers means deteriorated network coverage. In order to solve this problem, service providers will have to increase the number of cell towers which will increase the overall EMF radiation. Bad network means the phone has to work harder at a higher power to connect with nearest base station which will cause greater personal exposure. Also, if the handset works operates at a higher power, the battery will discharge faster, giving consumers lesser talktime/standby time, leading to degraded customer experience. In 2008, the government of India adopted ICNIRP guidelines for limiting the human exposure to EMF, for the telecom sector in India. While service providers have established necessary infrastructure for self-monitoring and self-testing of EMF measurement for complying with emission limits as per ICNIRP guidelines, people feel the industry needs an independent audit, which can go a long way in removing speculation over the veracity of such reports. Certainly, these people do not have the right to then blame service providers for bad network, delayed 3G and broadband services

Extended Deadlines Telecom companies now have more than 5 mnths to comply with the radiation norms. Earlier date was April 1 but government deferred it to September 1. In the meantime DoT has been asked to look in to issues raised by the industry. DoT in November 2011 accepted recommendation given by Inter-Ministerial Committee (IMC) on electromagnetic radiation being emitted from mobile phone towers. It decided to implement the same from April 1. However, there is no extension for radiation

guideline implementation date by mobile handset companies under which all mobile handsets to be sold in India from September 1 have to lower their radiation emission from SAR 2 to SAR 1.6. This means that the device should emit maximum of 1.6 watt of energy over 1 gram of body tissue exposed to it.

The Research Continues The COAI (Cellular Operators Association of India), and Auspi (Association of United Telecom Service Providers of India), the two industries bodies representing GSM and CDMA players respectively, claimed that there is no scientific evidence as of today to suggest that the radiation emitted by the towers can cause cancer. The Telecom Engineering and Resource Monitoring (Term) cells of the department of Telecommunications test up to 10% of BTS sites randomly at their discretion. Additionally, the BTS sites against which there are public complaints are also tested by TERM Cells. The testing is done as per procedures prescribed by Telecom Engineering Centre (TEC). TERM Cells have tested more than 19,658 BTSs so far and all are found to be conforming to the prescribed EMF norms. Recently the government has decided to set up an expert panel to chart out a time-bound action plan for an in-depth study of the impact of radiation emanating from cell phone towers on human health and ecology since DoT and cell phone operators have been claiming there is not enough evidence to prove that "exposure to radiation" can adversely impact human health and ecology. This might come as a sigh relief for operators, manufacturers as well as new technologies, but the debate is still open. Thus at this stage the one question that seeks answer is – Will new norm be observed from Sept 1???

‘Resistance is futile’ and so is the case with professionals armed with their iPads and android smartphones. Proliferation of smartphones and tablets, improvements to internet access have exposed a new trend previously unseen in business today. The trend has become recognized as BYOD, or Bring Your Own Device.

What is BYOD??? The first question that needs immediate answer is simply ‘What is BYOD?’ In a nutshell, BYOD is the idea of allowing employees to bring personally-owned mobile devices to their place of work, and using those devices to access privileged company resources such as email, file servers and databases as well as their personal application and data. Before it was a fairly casual occurrence, employees would rarely have a personal mobile device with them while at work. However, with the inclusion of easy internet access, mobiles that were once only for individual use became smartphones that linked work and personal lives together. In the recent survey conducted on behalf of fortinet - almost 75 % of those surveyed actively use personal mobile devices in the workplace. 35% stated that they couldn’t go a day without checking their social media networks, and 47% wouldn’t be able to manage 24 hours without sending a text. Businesses realized this trend could be used to their advantage; saving them from investing in the expensive process of mass-distribution handheld devices such as smartphones and tablets that

many employees are now expected to be equipped with -- allowing flexibility and on-call contact. But BYOD is a double edged sword, and can be problematic too.

PROS: a) BYOD is generally seen as a cost-cutting measure because businesses can save money on such high priced devices that normally they would require to purchase for their employees. b) Employee Satisfaction: Employees are able to decide on the technology that they wish to use for work. Being able to choose which hardware and platforms creates more satisfied and productive workers. c) Employee Productivity: Though this is harder to quantify, but some companies are taking a stab at it. Intel quotes productivity gains on the order of 2 million hours gained over a year, and that is just for an initial 10,000 user rollout.

CONS: a) Security: A unique problem BYOD presents is the commingling of personal and business data. Left unmanaged, this practice can result in data breaches. The topic of BYOD and security came to a head recently when tech giant IBM announced it had banned the use of apps such as Dropbox and Siri. IBM provides BlackBerrys for about 40,000 of its 400,000 workers while 80,000 more use their own devices to access IBM networks. b) Troubleshooting: A problem like troubleshooting can pop up in an environment where users are bringing a multitude of different technologies. The challenges and risks posed should not be the sole reason to ban the practice of BYOD altogether. The trend certainly carries a significant momentum, and holds ample benefits for both companies and users. The trick is to understand the advantages, as well as the issues, and then employ BYOD in a way that works for everyone.

Always Plan Ahead

Once, there was a Kingdom with a mysterious rule for the King, who rules the Kingdom. The rule is “The King can rule the kingdom only for five years. On successful completion of his term, he’ll be left alone, in the inhabitable forest, filled with wild animals that exist beside the Kingdom. Those who go there will surely die as a prey to wild animals. The First king ruled the Kingdom for five years. Each day the King feared about the day he would be left alone in the forest to die. His fear of death had made him an inefficient King and he was not able to concentrate on ruling. After completing his term, he

was carried away by his servants and was left alone in the forest. The second king came to rule. He was so scared because he saw the fate of him right in front of his eyes, when the first king was leaving. He ruled the Kingdom only for three years. He died on the third year because of the fear and the stress. The third king took over the kingdom. He was ruling happily and efficiently from the first day he became the king. The people were so happy during his period. He was never worried about what was about to come. He enjoyed every day of his life. His term was about to complete within a few days. The people were so sad that they are going to miss a good King. But the King never seemed to worry about the same. The day came and the King was about to leave the kingdom. Huge crowd was standing to send him off. The King waved his hand to the people and went happily. One of his ministers asked him, “King, are you not afraid about your future?” The King smiled and replied, “There is no reason to be afraid. On the first year of my term, when we fought with our neighboring kingdom, I asked all the slaves who lost to us, to go to the forest and rehabilitate it. On the second year of my term, I helped them to form a civilization there. On the third year of my term, I’ve asked the people over there to kill all the wild animals. On the fourth year of my term, I’ve taught the people how to cultivate, trade, learn. On the fifth year of my term, I’ve built a huge Palace over there and have created a Kingdom over there. Now my Job is to go there and be a King, there too.” Moral of the story: If we need to achieve a goal, we need to plan and divide the Goal into a set of short term goals and make sure we are on track to achieve the big one. But, unfortunately, most of us, most of the times, see the big picture and get de-motivated and don’t even get started!
