Welcome...to Southampton Arts and Heritage spring/summer programme of new exhibitions, accompanied by a

fantastic range of activities for adults.

SeaCity Museum is our new flagship venue; we are delighted to now open the doors to visitors. The new

museum, together with Southampton City Art Gallery and Tudor House and Garden, brings a vibrant, dynamic,

cultural offer to visitors and residents in the city.

Titanic the LegendOn display until 30 August 2013

Titanic – the name is instantly recognisable across the world. One hundred years after she sank, the story of Titanic continues to fascinate. It has been extensively researched, remembered, commemorated, often glamorised and, sometimes, exploited. When did disaster become a romance? What lessons were learned? Should artefacts be salvaged from the wreck site? These are just some of the questions being asked in the exhibition.

Titanic historians, writers, academics and scientists explore how and why the legend endures through the literature, films and merchandise that has grown out of the story.

Whether you have personal links to Titanic or your interest is academic, or even if you don’t quite see what the fuss is all about, this exhibition invites you to share your views at interactive stations in the gallery space.

Clare Woods: The Dark Matter 25 May - 2 September, Galleries 1-4

This major exhibition explores the paintings of British artist Clare Woods.

The show features a number of new paintings made especially for Southampton City Art Gallery. Some derive from photographs, then drawings, of the land including standing stones, ditches, roots or pools. Using oil paint on aluminium, the artist creates controlled layers of intense paint that form images where colours and shapes swim together to create less recognisable and more abstract forms.

Also on display is the large scale work, Carpenter’s Curve, which has been commissioned by the Olympic Delivery Authority as one of two paintings to be transformed into a public artwork for the Olympic Park Utilities Buildings in London 2012. This show explores the subjects behind these monumental works, and the creation of this significant commission.

To coincide with her exhibition, Woods, who was Southampton born, has selected artworks from the Gallery’s permanent collection, many of which inspired her during regular visits to the Gallery as a child.

Drawing from the permanent collection, Rapid Formations brings together a group of artworks where the creation process has been guided, either partially or completely, by a system of rules and limitations that were predetermined by the artist.

This special collection display focuses on the video artwork, Chasing 1,000 (1994), an hour-long film piece by Glaswegian artist Roderick Buchanan in which the artist and his friend Paul Maguire header a basketball back and forth to each other, with the aim of eventually reaching 1000 headers.

Rapid Formations originated in a competition organised by the Contemporary Art Society, who invited young curators to choose a video artwork from Southampton City Art

Gallery’s collection and create an exhibition around it. Neil Jefferies was the winner of this new initiative along with Eleanor Nairne and Rebecca Lewin, whose exhibition Making a Scene took place in October 2011.

Don’t miss... Exhibition Talk: Rapid Formations curated by Neil JefferiesSun 12 Aug / Art Gallery 2-3pm / free talk

Susan Cutts: Cherish Until 7 October

We are delighted to present Cherish, an exhibition by the established paper sculptor Susan Cutts.

Cherish is inspired by the Hampshire tradition of maiden’s garlands, or virgin crowns. These garlands were carried at the funerals of young unmarried women and were decorated with flowers, rosettes and ribbons made of paper. The works created for Cherish are also a direct response to the Tudor House itself and the artefacts contained within it, represented in miniature paper sculptures of hats, gloves, fans, handkerchiefs and ‘Tudor’ roses.

Cutts uses traditional European equipment and techniques to create her intricate sculptures.
