iconic tropical Guam scenes in watercolor up at the exhibit. And there’s a special painting, with similar Guam themes, from her mother, Alma B. Vander Velde, up on the memoriam wall. “I wish I could paint as well as my mother,” Sayrs says. “She did a lot of local scenery, like houses and stuff, and I’d go with her and paint next to her and watch what she did and I always wanted to paint like her. I feel like I never re- ally achieved her ability, but I keep working at it.” Babauta’s name wasn’t in the original plans for the memoriam wall, but it was a bittersweet addi- tion and shows how the wall will evolve as other artists die. “I’d like to highlight every- body that has come and gone,” Alcon says. “But Joe, because he’s the most recent, it’s appro- priate that we talk about him. He left his legacy of art. ... I am happy that we have him here in the tribute wall.” The exhibit runs through the end of February. Its second phase, “Moon Art Exhibit,” will open on Feb. 6.
