Introduction Every school has its own story to tell. The context in which teaching and learning takes place influences the processes and procedures by

which the school makes decisions around curriculum, instruction, and assessment. The context also impacts the way a school stays faithful

to its vision. Many factors contribute to the overall narrative such as an identification of stakeholders, a description of stakeholder

engagement, the trends and issues affecting the school, and the kinds of programs and services that a school implements to support student

learning.

The purpose of the Executive Summary (ES) is to provide a school with an opportunity to describe in narrative form the strengths and

challenges it encounters. By doing so, the public and members of the school community will have a more complete picture of how the school

perceives itself and the process of self-reflection for continuous improvement. This summary is structured for the school to reflect on how it

provides teaching and learning on a day to day basis.

Description of the School

Describe the school's size, community/communities, location, and changes it has experienced in the last three years. Include

demographic information about the students, staff, and community at large. What unique features and challenges are associated

with the community/communities the school serves? Executive Summary:

Riverwood Middle School is a large suburban middle school with over 1200 students located in one of the three major neighborhoods that we

serve. The building currently has 80 certified staff members and multiple classified support staff. Over the past two years, Riverwood

Middle School's staff and student population continues to grow. In addition, the faculty and staff retention rate has increased markedly.

Riverwood Middle School continues to attract teachers with experience with AIG (Academically and Intellectually Gifted) certification,

National Boards, and advanced degrees.

Riverwood Middle School has the following student demographic breakdown: Caucasian-66%, African American-17%, Hispanic-11%, Asian

1.5% and categorized other-4.5%. A challenge that Riverwood is facing is an increasing student population due to new construction in our

attendance area. This is being addressed through additional district allotments of new personnel. In addition, mobile units have been added

to accommodate the continual growth of the student population.

Riverwood Middle School has a history of high success in proficiency and growth in End of Grade/Course testing. The challenge is to

maintain both high proficiency and continue to show high growth among our student population.

6. Systems Perspective: Understanding that alignment, linkage and coordination of strategies, processes, and resources are necessary for

the highest performance of our school system.

Riverwood Middle School embodies its purpose through the following programs that are offered.

Data drives Riverwood Middle School to achieve the goals and objectives to empower its students to become successful in the global

society. All core subjects will continue to use quarterly assessments and common assessments to identify the students' remediation and

acceleration needs. Grade level team meetings, grade level department meetings (Professional Learning Communities) are held weekly for a

minimum of 45 minutes to promote professional collaboration as well as to address student needs through analysis of data. The

enhancement department will continue to meet with their county wide PLC's monthly for a minimum of one hour. The minutes from each PLC

group will be placed on the school staff share under PLC minutes. Administration will monitor and review the minutes monthly to ensure

effective communication and collaboration. Professional Learning Communities continue to address both vertical and horizontal alignment

with curriculum. Through the continue collaboration of the PLC groups, members will actively align their grading practices on both quarterly

grades as well as common assessments. Mentor/mentee meetings are held to promote professional growth and collaboration monthly.

Instruction is aligned with the North Carolina Standard Course of Study. Pacing guides, extended curriculum, AVID strategies and

Professional Learning Communities are utilized by teachers to ensure curriculum development. Teachers use a combination of textbook

resources, quizzes, tests, project based learning, IReady assessments, common assessments, observation and performance portfolios to

assess student achievement. A school wide remediation and acceleration program is in place to provide support for academic growth of

students.

Riverwood Middle School uses a variety of strategies to ensure all students' needs are met. These strategies include; Cornell notes, tutorials,

WICOR strategies, philosophical chairs, Socratic Seminars, speech presentations, and 21st skills assessments. Advanced classes are

offered in both language arts and math (Common Core Plus 6th grade; Common Core Plus 7th grade; and Math I 8th grade) in all grades

levels. Identified LEP students receive individualized assistance with the ESL teacher on a regular basis. LEP students receive modified

assignments and assessments as specified in their individualized learning plans. Exceptional children receive various levels of services in the

least restrictive environment to best meet their needs, including inclusion and/or resource services as needed. These students also receive

modified assignments and assessments as specified by their Individual Education Plans.

Scheduling of students is a process that involves a matrix designed by the county to place students in Math and Language Arts appropriate

courses. All students are then heterogeneously grouped for science and social studies.

Enhancements for students of Riverwood Middle School are: Art, Band, Chorus, Physical Education, Computer Skills, Spanish, PLTW, 21st

Century Skills, Math and Reading remediation, Creative Writing, and AVID.

Recognition of staff, faculty and student successes is celebrated throughout the year at Riverwood Middle School. Staff personnel and

professional successes are recognized at our weekly grade level meetings, monthly staff meetings, and staff driven positive teacher referrals.

Staff will also be highlighted through student produced WRMS news. Student successes are recognized through awards ceremonies, grade

level incentives, positive teacher communications and an academic awards ceremony for students achieving a cumulative average of at least

95% each quarter.

Riverwood Middle School continues to strive to achieve a positive, supportive, collaborative school climate. The continued development of

Professional Learning Communities facilitates the professional growth of our administration, faculty and students. The continuation of the

AVID Program and AVID strategies will ensure the implementation of a rigorous curriculum. Our goal of high student achievement will benefit

all stakeholders in our community.

Riverwood Middle School holds weekly PLC meetings with grade level/content area PLCs. These groups have established norms and

roles for each member/group. The agenda and notes for each meeting are recorded and shared with an administrator for documentation,

questions and answers. Each content area meets monthly to align vertically with other grade levels.

positive environment that supports and is conducive to learning.

RMS's custodial staff works diligently to maintain an orderly and clean environment by achieving a Sparkle Grade of Excellent.

The counseling department has worked with students and created routine checks with students, a comprehensive year-long plan to

implement lessons for students, and divide responsibilities by grade level to better build relationships with the students and parents with

focus on grief counseling groups and anti-bullying. The administrators made transistion times a priority and were visible in their daily

schedule throughout the building during class transitions and cafeteria duty. RMS continued to use PBIS strategies with school wide

implementation and training throughout the year.

Goal 2: All Johnston County School students will demonstrate high levels of character, academic

growth, and achievement.

RMs continued with PLC growth in each content area as they met weekly and developed differentiation using

data from standardized tests and common assessments. MTSS students were identified and were given services through AIR (Acceleration,

Intervention, and Remediation) time 3-4 times a week.

AVID-students were identified and monitored and supported throughout the school year with AVID trained teachers, implemented AVID

strategies, and rigorous curriculum. Math and Reading remediation were offered for those identified during enhancement time for 45 minute

periods and also during school appointed AIR time daily schedule.

Goal 3: All Johnston County Schools will be provided the resources to meet the needs of all

stakeholders.

Technology was increased by collaboration with stake holders for students and staff need. RMS was able to increase our technology by

having 18 chromebook carts with 36 chromebooks in each cart.

Goal 4: All Johnston County School leaders will encourage and promote family, community, and

business involvement.

Administration trained staff during weekly hall meetings on specific communication expectations to parents throughout the school year.

Teachers implemented the REMIND app, their classroom websites, and using the student's daily agendas. Teachers were spot checked on

updating Powerschool with grades and were held accountable to ensure stakeholders had the most current information.

Riverwood Middle School has had a successful year academically with academics and communcations. We have seen an increase in

parental knowledge, staff satisfaction, and student accountability.

academic growth, and achievement.

Strategy 1: Extended Learning Time - Students will be provided 30 minutes per day, three times a week, to meet each student's academic needs. The link below explains, "The

evidence review confirms that high performing districts and schools analyze data to best decide how to increase academic learning time. Some accomplish this by

extending the school day and/or school year as well as reconfiguring the current school day schedule. These LEAs/Schools also closely monitor the results, namely

student achievement, to gauge extended learning time success." Research Cited: http://ncstar.weebly.com/uploads/5/2/4/4/52444991/b3-_01.pdf

Goal 3: All Johnston County Schools will be provided the resources to meet the needs of all

stakeholders.

Strategy 1: Increase Technology - Collaborate with the PTSA and other stakeholders to obtain technology for student school use. Research Cited: http://inclusiveschools.org/impact-of-parents-on-student-success/
