Executive Summary
Welcome to Bridging the Talent Gap —a campaign to help employers, learning providers and other community stakeholders understand and meet the challenges of ensuring a skilled and educated workforce. Campaign sponsor, The Graduate! Network, leaders of a national effort to increase college completion among adults, will collect employer data to identify ways to bridge talent gaps, one community at a time.
Bridging the Talent Gap helps your community move the needle on education attainment and ensuring a skilled workforce in three phases:
1. Assess your business community’s education and talent gap needs with the Talent Alignment Survey and interactive data dashboard.
2. Engage interested employers with customized employer profiles that help them understand their return on investment.
3. Drive results for you and your stakeholders through data-driven partnership development.
To get started, communities identify the best partner organizations to distribute the Talent Alignment Survey. For example, in Louisville and southern Indiana, the local chapters of the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) invited HR professionals to participate in the Talent Alignment Survey and earn professional continuing education units (CEUs) for both taking the survey and participating in a corresponding workshop. Chambers of Commerce, workforce development boards and economic development agencies are other examples of great partners.
The interactive data dashboard on our website, www.BridgingTheTalentGap.org, summarizes Phase 1, piloted earlier this year in Louisville and surrounding counties in Kentucky and southern Indiana. Each participating Bridging The Talent Gap community will have access to a similar data dashboard and other tools. For more information, contact Bridgett Strickler, Co-Principle Investigator and Business Engagement Lead, [email protected].

Louisville and Southern Indiana Summary
The Talent Alignment Survey was sent out to the HR Professionals in these communities over
a five-week period in January and February 2016. In total, there were 140 completed
surveys and 135 partially-completed surveys. This effort to date has
touched 275 businesses in the Metro Louisville and Southern Indiana community.
Respondents represent the broad community of employers in this area:
60% represent businesses with 1 – 200 employees
25% are medium-size businesses with 201 – 1,000 employees
15% represent businesses with more than 1,000 employees
And, we have heard from virtually every sector of our business community.
SECTOR NUMBER
Service Industries 24 (19%)
Manufacturing, Construction, Mining, Utilities 71 (56%)
Education, Community, Government 20 (16%)
Finance, Banking, 13 (10%)
Health care 42 (33%)
Information, Scientific, Technical 17 (13%)
Transportation 15 (12%)
Other 17 (13%)
(Please note, percentages do not add up to 100% because survey respondents could choose
more than one industry cluster.)

Louisville/Southern Indiana Survey Findings:
A total of 71% of survey respondents describe the economic conditions in our community as positive.
82% report that their respective companies are preparing for moderate to high growth in the next 3-5 years.
84% of the business community is currently hiring for full-time, regular staff. This hiring cuts across all levels of the workforce.
More than 60% are hiring management, non-management salaried employees and non-management hourly employees.
40% of all new hires require new or updated skills.
For positions where new or updated skills are required:
86% indicated that recruiting qualified workers is difficult.
85% are having a hard time recruiting employees in the areas of Skilled Trades and Highly Skilled Medical Labor. While Skilled Trade and Highly Skilled Medical Labor are the community’s largest talent gap, there are several other key areas where our community’s workforce is in need.
49% of organizations reported the need for employees with a minimum of a bachelor’s degree will increase.
27% say this same need applies for employees with an advanced degree. The skills we need and our economic prospects are indeed changing and fall under the heading of “a good problem to have.”
A workshop and panel discussion involving community leaders held on March 8, 2016,
provided a positive and productive think tank experience to the nearly 200 attendees.
