Executive Shadowing Program

Employers are increasingly looking for graduates who bring a lot more than sound theory to the challenges faced in the workplace. It is a clear message that QTIC is getting from its industry members who expect degree holders who understand the ‘real’ business environment. As an industry organisation with a strong interest in business skill development, we are very keen to support and work in partnership with the School of Tourism because of the result-focused approach to education. From a personal perspective, I have been inspired by the enthusiasm and ability of their students and I am encouraged by the fact that many have gone on to put their skills to good use in our industry. The School of Tourism at UQ is offering students an outstanding opportunity that can give a competitive edge to anyone who picks up the challenge. Daniel Gschwind, Chief Executive, Queensland Tourism Industry Council Adjunct Professor, School of Tourism EXECUTIVE SHADOWING PROGRAM (ESP) The Executive Shadowing Program (ESP) aims to bridge the gap between classroom learning and practical work experience by providing mentoring opportunities for motivated, high-performing students. This mentoring style program gives students the opportunity to see the world from a more senior viewpoint and should serve as a major benefit in their professional development as they progress through their career. Equally, our partners enjoy access to the cream of Queensland’s graduates in the field, as well as all associated promotional activities that profile the program. Through this program you may find your future workforce. Student entry into the ESP is highly competitive. The School of Tourism restricts participation to the top 15-20 students in their final year of study. Students must have an exceptional academic record, a strong work experience history and must present professionally when interviewed by a panel from the Professional Development team. Students who excel in these three areas are then interviewed by the industry hosts, who choose which student they would like to offer an ESP placement to. Students need to complete a minimum of 60 hours in placement between August and early October. We recommend 60-80 hours. ESP can be undertaken as a block or a regular day per week; this can be negotiated with the student and yourself at the time of placement. Employers and students are supported throughout the placement by the School’s Professional Development team. The School of Tourism has attracted international recognition for the quality of its programs and commitment to tourism education, with award winning teaching staff and national and international collaborative links. The School continues to pursue meaningful, long-term relationships with highly regarded organisations across the private and public sectors. Such organisations recognise the benefits of forming linkages with and being associated with the only School of Tourism based within one of Australia’s prestigious Group of Eight universities. Executive Shadowing Program for 2012 for the UQ School of Tourism

Transcript of Executive Shadowing Program

Daniel Gschwind,

Chief Executive, Queensland Tourism Industry Council

Adjunct Professor, School of Tourism

EXECUTIVE SHADOWING PROGRAM (ESP)

The Executive Shadowing Program (ESP) aims to bridge the gap between classroom learning and practical work experience by providing mentoring opportunities for motivated, high-performing students.

If you are interested in hosting a high performing ESP student, please contact Cate Clifford or Angela Galantai to discuss further.
