Introduction of the Exchange booklet for international students

The information in this part of the booklet introduces you to the practical things of

your first days in Netherlands, Eindhoven and TU/e. The aim is to give you an idea of

what to expect in your first days here and answers questions like: What is the Meet

& Greet service? What’s the weather like in the Netherlands? How do I find grocery

shops? What are Dutch people like? With the help of an international student,

currently studying at the TU/e, information was gathered and put into this booklet.

Firstly here are some basic, but important “rules” which are followed here in the

Netherlands:

• Be on time for appointments – Dutch people are very punctual and plan their

time very well, so being late can cause serious delays and irritation;

• Time management – try to plan your time as it will make things much easier for

you the rest of your studies in the Netherlands;

• Communicate, communicate and communicate - if you have any questions

ALWAYS ASK. All the people working at TU/e (for example the Education &

Student service center) want to help you. If you don’t understand something, if

you are not sure where you are meant to be at a given time, if there is something

worrying you, don’t hesitate – come and talk to us. We are here to help you!

We suggest that you visit the following link and watch these interesting and very

informative movies about the Netherlands and studying here:

http://www.youtube.com/user/studyinholland

Please read the information in this booklet very carefully and enjoy your stay in the

Netherlands! It gives us great pleasure to welcome you here!

1.1 Accommodation

TU/e offers to arrange accommodation for all guests coming from abroad who stay in

Eindhoven for longer than one month. Exchange students are accommodated in

single bedrooms in student houses. Student houses are shared by several students,

usually internationals, but sometimes Dutch housemates too. The rent of a student

room is approx. €425.

For more information about the offer to arrange student housing by the TU/e, please

look at following website:

http://w3.tue.nl/en/services/stu/internationalisation/services/accommodation/acco

mmodation_for exchange students/

1.2 What is in your room?

Most student rooms for international students are furnished with a (single) bed,

table & chair, lamp, wardrobe, basic kitchen utensils, such as pots, pans, cups, plates

and cutlery, and use of a washing machine. If you already received information who

your landlord will be you could contact him before your arrival to find out what you

would need to bring with you. Otherwise expect mentioned things.

Eindhoven has a few well known and cheap shops for buying household goods, such

as the world famous

http://www.ikea.com/

And very common in The Netherlands:

1.3 Dutch eating habits

Although food from all over the world is available in restaurants and supermarkets,

traditional Dutch cooking shows no sign of dying out. Its origins lie in Holland’s

agricultural past and it features local produce such as bread, potatoes, root

vegetables, greens, pork and beef products plus a variety of dairy produce including

the famous Dutch cheeses.

An example of a traditional Dutch main meal is called “Stampot” and includes

mashed potatoes mixed with vegetables and usually meat of some kind (perhaps

pork sausage or bacon cubes) and a rich gravy. Meat balls are also popular served

with gravy and potatoes. Lamb and mutton are rarely eaten by the Dutch and are

therefore not as easy to find. However chicken, pork, beef and vegetarian meat

substitutes are widely available. Some of the more unusual vegetables eaten by the

Dutch are sauerkraut, chicory and kale.

Thick soups form another popular meal, the most famous being “Erwtensoep”, a

substantial pea and ham soup containing the ubiquitous smoked sausage. Another is

Brown Bean soup (“bruinebonensoep”) with brown beans replacing the peas.

However a majority of the Dutch (including Dutch students) don’t stick to the

traditional Dutch cuisine. On the contrary! Instead they prefer to choose

international “students’” cuisine, which mostly includes pasta cooked in lots of

different ways, rice, salad, yogurt, sandwiches and breakfast cereal. Students prefer

food that is easy to cook and does not take too much of their time. Price is an

important factor too – with their low budget, students shop for cheap food.

Holland has a colonial past and the Dutch have acquired a taste for the exotic,

particularly Indonesian dishes. Indonesian ingredients are available in supermarkets

and some have found their way into mainstream cooking. The same applies, to a

lesser extent, to food from the former Caribbean colony of Suriname.

(References: http://www.nlplanet.com/nlguides/traditional-dutch-food)

Dutch people usually eat at least three times a day: breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Some international students may notice that there is a lot of bread in the Dutch daily

menu. Sandwiches are very popular here for breakfast and lunch, although warm

dishes are also available on campus during the day.

It’s up to you to decide if you want to bring your own food with you to the campus

or whether you want to eat “Dutch-style” at one of the many eateries/cafeterias on

campus.

All in all the Netherlands has a long history of international relations and this is

reflected not only in the way Dutch people communicate with other nations, but

also, how they accept the variety of cuisines. So, you can be sure you will find almost

everything you need for satisfying your cooking habits in grocery shops or open

markets.

1.4 Insurance and bank account

Everyone who lives in the Netherlands is obliged to have health insurance and

personal liability insurance.

• For EU students:

Students from the EU can apply for an EU Health Card at their own health care

insurance company. For more information, visit

http://ec.europa.eu/employment_social/healthcard/index_en.htm.

• For Non-EU students:

Students from outside the EU are advised to take out health and liability

insurance from AON (https://www.students-insurance.eu/). You can take out this

insurance before or after your arrival. It costs approx. € 40 per month. Although if

you choose not to take out AON and if your insurance from your home country

also covers you in the Netherlands, then please send us a copy of your policy

before your arrival, so the International Office can assess whether your insurance

has sufficient coverage.

• Bank account

The International Relations Office assists you to open a bank account at a Dutch

bank, called Rabobank. After your arrival you can come to the Education &

Student service center to get more information. Before departure to the

Netherlands, please check with your local bank office, if money can be

transferred from the bank account in your home country to your new bank

account at the Dutch Rabobank and what arrangements you need to make to pay

money into your Dutch bank account.

1.5 Getting mobile: Dutch phone number

After you have arrived and have settled in Eindhoven it might be an idea to get a cell

phone for daily use here in the Netherlands. There are several options for students:

you can get a prepaid phone number or sign a contract with a mobile phone service

provider for 1 or 2 years.

Prepaid simcards and contracts for your mobile can be found in special telephone

stores, where all useful information and goods are provided. These stores are usually

named after the mobile service provider. We will introduce you to major mobile

service providers in the Netherlands. So afterwards, you can explore their websites

and find which way of getting mobile is best for you.

• Vodafone (http://www.vodafone.nl):

Vodafone is one of the largest mobile telecommunications companies in the

Netherlands and is part of the worldwide Vodafone Group, the largest

telecommunications company for mobile telephony world. The successful and

internationally oriented company distinguishes itself through a very open and

informal culture that aims to encourage people, to inspire and challenge.

Vodafone is a company in which people live, because they work with people with

the same boundless ambition and scope to new ideas and initiatives.

• T-Mobile (http://www.t-mobile.nl):

T-Mobile is one of the largest international suppliers of mobile communications.

Through its networks in many European countries, Asia and the U.S. make more

than 82 million people use our mobile services. At T-Mobile you can choose from

T-Mobile Subscriber or T-Mobile prepaid rate plans. With or without buying a cell

phone.

Netherlands and abroad for the inhabitants of the Netherlands. Our effective

organization we can respond quickly to local customer requirements. Telfort

1.6 Weather in the Netherlands

The Netherlands has a temperate climate, so its summers are not tropical and the

winters are not extremely cold. The average temperature of Netherlands is about 2°C

in the month of January and 19°C in July, so whilst you can where light to medium

clothing in the summer you will need medium to warm clothing in the winter.

The average rainfall in a year is 76.5 cm and rainfall is common throughout the year,

so it’s an idea to always carry a raincoat or an umbrella with you. These can be

bought easily once you arrive here.

For more information visit the following websites:

netherlands.html

1.7 Transportation

Walking

Although Eindhoven is the 5th

largest city of the Netherlands, it is still possible to

reach most destinations on foot, especially if you live and spend most of your time

within the central ring road of the city. The ring road is approximately 5km in

diameter.

Cycling

Riding a bike is the most common way of traveling in the Netherlands all year

around. The fact that the Netherlands is so flat gives the impression that the country

was built for cycling!

Cyclists must abide by the general traffic rules and there is also a separate set of

rules for cyclists

General traffic rules:

Because of the large number of bicycles, special traffic rules apply to bicycles and

mopeds.

The following applies to both:

• Give way to all traffic approaching from the right hand side, unless signposts

state otherwise.

• Pedestrians must give way to cars, lorries and motorbikes, unless signposts state

otherwise.

Rules specific to cyclists:

Page 9: Exchange BookletExchange Booklet Information booklet about the TU/e and other practical information CONTENTS Introduction of the exchange booklet for international students 3 1 The

Technische Universiteit Eindhoven University of Technology

9 Exchange Booklet

• Cycling side by side (maximum 2 persons) is only allowed if other traffic is not

inconvenienced.

• Lights are compulsory after dark!

• Cyclists are not allowed on motorways!

• Children aged 10 and younger must be seated in a child seat. These seats are

available for rent.

• To change direction, clearly indicate this with your arm.

Requirements for your bicycle and equipment:

Foreigners with their own bicycle will have no problems if the bike meets the legal

requirements of Holland. Legal requirements for bicycles are:

• safe and adequate handle bars

• a clearly audible and functioning bell

• adequate lighting at the front and the back after dark

• a reflector on rear mudguard and one between the spokes

• reflecting pedals

• recommended are reflectors or light reflecting armbands for night time - easily

obtained

Tips and suggestions:

• Bikes in the Netherlands can get stolen lots of times. Therefore we advise you to

never leave your bicycle unlocked or else it will disappear! In most major cities

and towns guarded parking facilities for bicycles are available. You can leave your

bike there without worrying but even here you must lock your bike.

• Make sure you carry a simple repair set (often available in a handy little pouch).

For other repairs, you can consult a bicycle shop, where the prices are

reasonable. You'll find cycle shops and repair facilities in virtually every village,

although you may need to go to more specialized shops in larger towns if you're

looking for high-end components. Large do-it-yourself stores also stock bicycle

parts and accessories. Some bicycle renting points at railway stations may

provide a (simple) repair service as well. Most bike shops will have a large

selection of tire sizes in store, including several MTB types.

Public transport

Within Eindhoven and from the city to surrounding towns and villages you can travel

by bus. There are several bus lines across the city and they all meet at the central

station. In the following link one can find the map of public transportation in

Eindhoven and the schedules of trains and busses (available only in Dutch, but it is

useful to check it out): http://www.oveindhoven.nl/

On the website below you are able to get all needed directions to reach set

destination, also you will find information about bus/metro/tram tickets in the

Netherlands (the price, the look, available discounts, etc):

http://journeyplanner.9292.nl/

To travel with public transport you need a ticket. The 'Strippen Card' is valid

throughout the country for travelling on a bus, tram and metro. Every city or region

has been divided into transportation zones with set tariffs. To travel one zone you

have to pay two 'strips'. You pay an extra 'strip' for each subsequent zone. Within the

same zone you may change within a time limit mentioned on the back of the card.

You can buy a 'Strippen Card' with 15 strips (+/- € 6,50) or with 45 strips (+/- € 19,20).

You can buy 'Strippen Cards' at railway stations, in post offices, some super markets,

department stores and tobacconists. You can also buy it on the tram or bus, but then

the price is quite a bit higher.

To travel between the cities in the Netherlands, take the train . Trains are a popular

and easy way to travel. The schedules are frequent and as the Netherlands is not

huge, the trips don’t take long. The Dutch railways have a general website where you

can plan your trips by train and get all the needed information about your journey:

www.ns.nl . Click on “English” for the English version of the website.

In the near future, exact time frame not known yet, more and more the ‘OV-

chipcard’ will be introduced. The 'OV-chipcard' is a new pricing system for the whole

Dutch public transport and will replace the earlier mentioned “Strippen Card”. The

card is the only valid payment method in Rotterdam and Amsterdam from the 3th of

June 2010. Make sure you have one on time! Please visit the official website:

www.ov-chipkaart.nl (and choose 'UK') for further information.

1.8 Working possibilities

It might be hard to find a job as an international student in the Netherlands. There

are several reasons for this: besides the fact that international non-EEA students

need a work permit and are only allowed to work for a maximum of 10 hours per

week, there is also language barrier and some other things. Before you start looking

for a job you should know some very important information.

• Working permits: Citizens of Austria, Belgium, Cyprus, the Czech Republic,

Denmark, Estonia, Germany, Hungary, Finland, France, Greece, Ireland, Iceland,

Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxemburg, Malta, Norway, Poland,

Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom

DO NOT need working permit, their working hours are not limited.

• Citizens of other countries do need working permit. They are also allowed to

work no more than 10 hours per week during the year (part-time job) or seasonal

job; June, July & August (full-time).

• To get a work permit, your employer has to apply for it. You cannot do it yourself.

• As soon as you start working you need to have a basic Dutch healthcare

insurance, even if you are EU citizen. This will be more expensive than the

healthcare insurance for students.

• Your job, by means of working hours, may affect your studies, so think carefully,

how much time you are able to work before signing the contract.

• Check Nuffic.nl for further information about finding a job, and what you need to

do before you start working: http://www.nuffic.nl/international-students/living-

in-holland/working-while-studying.

As mentioned above it is pretty hard to find job for international students. But you

should always think positive. Also you should know, that in the Netherlands there are

several companies – recruitment agencies – which help students, who do not speak

Dutch to find a job. Below we provide you with the links to their websites. You

should definitely contact them, if you cannot find a job yourself.

2.1 City of Eindhoven

Eindhoven received its city privileges in 1232, though you will hardly find anything

from those times in this modern city of Noord Brabant. Today Eindhoven is an

innovative and modern city of the Netherlands. It’s the 5th

largest city in the whole

country and is called the center of technology, innovation and design.

There are a number of things what you, as a student can do in this city. Since it has

university and several other higher education institutions, sometime Eindhoven is

even called students town. Here you can find everything for your hobbies, such as

sport, photography to free time facilities from “Pub Crawling” to theater, concerts or

parties of famous musicians or DJ’s. There are also several annual events which

brings a lot of joy and attractions to all of the inhabitants of the city. We will talk

about some of them right away.

Festivals and Celebrations

18th

of September – The Lichtjesroute:

The Lichtjesroute is an event held every autumn. It starts on 18th

of September,

which is the day, when Eindhoven was liberated from Germany during the Second

World War. The Lichtjesroute starts with a big parade and commemoration of the

1944 events in Eindhoven. The lights which are build to create and illusion of fairy

tales are lit and stay on for about 2-3 weeks. There is 15 kilometers cycle path, where

you can enjoy the amazing feeling, which those lights create. Sometimes students

gather in groups, take some coffee, tea, cookies of other treat and cycle the route

together, you should try that too!

GLOW international Forum of Light in Art and Architecture: f

Eindhoven "The City of Light" is the perfect setting for the GLOW light festival. The

industrial city has a reputation to maintain in the areas light, art, design and

technology. In GLOW all these aspects come together in surprising light creations.

Page 15: Exchange BookletExchange Booklet Information booklet about the TU/e and other practical information CONTENTS Introduction of the exchange booklet for international students 3 1 The

Visitors have free access to the event. They can follow a route through the inner city,

where about twenty light designers and light artists have illuminated typical spaces

and buildings in a fascinating way. Participants are selected by the organization

based on their artistic originality and innovative use of lighting technologies, which

include computers, sensors, animation and projection. GLOW is a platform for

creative talent that uses light in all its applications as a tool to let the local

architecture come to life.

More information about GLOW:

Marathon:

Are you enthusiastic, sporty and stubborn person? Then this event is for you!

Every year many cities in the Netherlands arrange marathons. But as it is said in

media Eindhoven holds one of the fastest and the most enjoyable marathons in the

world. The major facts about marathon are:

• It is in the World’s top 15 fastest marathons

• It is a major event with approximately 17,000 participants and 160,000

spectators

• Includes the Runners festival a hugely popular festival throughout the country

with at least 15 musical attractions

• It is true city marathon (two rounds)

Christmas period and New Year celebration:

The city of lights looks just wonderful when the period of Christmas comes. Most of

the city is decorated with lights and other Christmas decorations. In the very city

center, Market Square, you will find the open air ice-skating arena and lots of people

enjoying it or resting while drinking a cup of hot chocolate. For the New Year

celebrations you also have a lot of choices. First of all, most of the bars and cafes are

open and usually have special parties. Most of the times you choose the place where

you want to go and after paying entrance fee enjoy New Year’s Eve with some nice

program, food and/or drinks. As mentioned above it can be either bar or any concert

hall, such as Effenaar or Philips Music centrum in Eindhoven.

Sometimes though there are private student parties, which are fun and nice place to

meet New Year.

Carnival:

Carnival is a huge and colorful celebration in the southern regions of the

Netherlands. Eindhoven can be proud of its parades and events in the city during the

four day holiday. Officially Carnival is held from Sunday until Ash Wednesday, 40 days

before Easter, but in fact the city starts its celebrations on Friday evening and

continues until late on Tuesday. Masks, costumes, loud music, beer and good mood

everywhere! You have to see it yourself. And the most important thing is that there

are no lectures at the TU/e in carnival week!

Page 16: Exchange BookletExchange Booklet Information booklet about the TU/e and other practical information CONTENTS Introduction of the exchange booklet for international students 3 1 The

Queen’s day:

Koninginnedag or Queen’s day is celebrated on April 30 in the whole kingdom of the

Netherlands. Queen's Day celebrates the birthday of the Queen of the Netherlands

and is supposed to be a day of national unity and "togetherness". Queen's Day is

known for its "freemarket" all over the country, where everybody is allowed to sell

things in the streets. Other activities during Queen's Day are children's games,

individual musical performances, and music concerts. The whole nation dresses in

orange and has a lot of fun. You will experience it yourself!

Going out in Eindhoven:

Since Eindhoven is sometimes called students town, there are lots of places to go.

The most famous one is the bar street called Stratum. It is the longest pub filled

street in the Netherlands. On the peak nights (Thursday through Saturday) you can

meet approximately 20,000 people in that street! This is where you’ll find loud music

from the bar, salsa dancing in Santiago de Cuba and cheerful passersby.

Though it is great fun and a nice experience to try Stratum with all its bars, some

people are looking for something different. For those, who are more interested in

alternative music and specified parties, there are other places to hang out, such as

Irish pub or bar Hoogste Tijd. These places differ from Stratum with their bohemian

atmosphere and different kind of music. Sometimes you can find live performances

and famous DJ’s playing there.

Eindhoven and the world: Airport/Cheap tickets

While staying in Eindhoven you also have a nice opportunity to see the world, well at

least Europe, in a comparatively cheap way: travel from Eindhoven Airport . All the

information about the airport you can find in its website:

http://www.eindhovenairport.com/ .

You also have to know something about cheap airlines. Ryanair flies out of Eindhoven

airport with some very good bargain tickets (see http://www.ryanair.com/en).

Sometimes the prices of tickets are stunning, such as € 0.00! But you have to bear in

mind, that there always are taxes you’ll have to pay and the overall price will be

higher. Though it still worth traveling this way!

she will provide you with a short introduction to the department and inform you of

the practical arrangements that need to be made. If you are going to take part in a

research project or internship, please also inform your supervisor after arrival.

At the desk of the Education & Student service center you can collect your student

card and a letter with your identity number and personal code which you need to

access the Education Information system: http://owinfo.tue.nl

Students who have a residence permit:

I) On your residence permit card you will see your personal details. Check the

information carefully when you go and pick up your card. If it is not correct, notify

the IND (Dutch Immigration Service) and let them correct it.

II) Your residence permit is valid for the period you informed us for your visa

application. If you want to stay longer you need to contact your contact person at

the department and ask permission. This person needs to send an email to

[email protected] with your new enrolment date. Then you can contact Angie Vorstermans

to extend your residence permit.

III) If your residence permit gets stolen (in the Netherlands or abroad) you need

to go to the police and get a police rapport. This rapport is necessary to be able to

get a new residence permit card. Contact STU for help to fill in the form.

Please take care of your residence permit card because applying for a new one will

cost you 250 Euros!

Do not forget that you only need to carry your residence permit with you when you

are in the Netherlands, but when you go abroad you will also need your passport.

EU/EEA students:

Students from the following countries do not need a residence permit and only need

to register at the IND:

Austria, Belgium, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France,

Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxemburg, Malta,

Poland, the Netherlands, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland,

United Kingdom, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway.

Call the following telephone number to make an appointment: 0900-1234561.

Students from Romania or Bulgaria cannot register at the IND, but can apply for a

Proof of lawful residence. This is not mandatory! But if you are getting a part time

job you do need to apply for it!

If you want to apply for a Proof of lawful residence STU can help you.

All students:

All students need to register at the town hall as a citizen of Eindhoven.

For students that have an appointment with Angie Vorstermans (students from non-

EU-EEA countries) an appointment at the town hall will be arranged.

A few weeks after your registration at the town hall you will receive a letter from

them. Check the information in the letter. If it is correct you do not need to do

anything, but if it has changed you should notify them.

In this letter you will also find a BS-number. This number is the former social security

number. If you have opened an bank account at the Rabobank, you need to give

them this number as soon as you have it. You could also need this to apply for a

telephone or the internet and when you want to start working. But most students do

not need it at all during their stay in the Netherlands.

Do not lose this letter!

If you’re moving to a different address or if you are going to leave the Netherlands

permanently you should also notify the town hall.

If you receive a letter from the IND (Dutch Immigration Service) it will be written in

Dutch.

Please come to STU immediately so we can translate it for you and help you if

something needs to be done.

It is possible that a few weeks after your arrival you will receive some papers from

the tax office. These are in a blue envelope and written in Dutch. You have received

this form because you have come to the Netherlands and the tax office wants to

make sure that you do not need to pay taxes.

You can come to STU and ask for the translation of these forms or contact Angie

Vorstermans.

Please fill in the forms and send them back to the tax office!
