Every year around March the Excelsus female herd is put through its paces and the rigorous selection process is one of our yearly highlights. Each cow is evaluated on phenotype,
her age, present calf and the calves produced over her life time. This selects then those who stay and those who have to make way for a younger heifer that shows potential.
Herewith the general breakdown of the Excelsus Female herd.
The Table left show all the Herd Sires that have three or more daughters older than 2009 retained in the herd
and their phenotypical scores out of nine. It should also be noted a lot of the Excelsus home bred bulls are usu-
ally used just for a season as a back ups to an AI program.
The bulls with just one or two daughters are too many to tabulate but form a very large and diverse genetic
pool. Bulls such as Sonbri De Lux, Maratana LP9911 and LP0135, AZ0311, DM96125, GH0416, FM9793,
Excelsus Rex, Excelsus Blou, Bulk en Brul Marloe (SIM) DSV96253 (Bra) , Makam Matrix, Zamugo Zorro,
MAS0323 (Bra), Excelsus oo7, Rx Platinum, Excelsus Galen, Texas Red, Belle-Ombre Jared, Bonina Futeris-
tic, Smith Top Shelf, Smith Sergeant, PRR Perfection, LMC Red Bullet and Wisp Will Zane.
In Total 61 Herd Sires have been used over the last ten years or so with Metsibra UDM9453B having the most
retention success. The two former Zamugo herd sires Maratana Langman and Wisp Will Enos bred top females
also. Of the imported bulls PRR Prevail came out on top breeding beautiful females. His son and heir Excelsus
Pacific has bred the best 2012 calves breeding fine looking bull and heifer calves. LMC Patriot also stepped up
onto the plate with truly beautiful females.

Fred Dell Inspection 2013
Our yearly Simbra Consultation also involves a visit from our Technical Advisor Fred Dell who inspected the late 2010 heifers and the 2011 heifer herds.

The 2011 and late 2010 heifers realized the first PRR Palisade calves. This is an underrated
bull being the son of PRR Pace Setter that bred taller, rangier animals. Stud breeding is a
mixing of desirable traits trying to paint a perfect picture. Palisade brought growth, length,
polls, PRR phenotype and medium framed animals. Palisade scored a 6.8/9 with ten heifers
and drew a lot of favourable comment from Fred.
The biggest winner was Diana’s Dynamite with 7.2/9 for five heifers and further justified
the many hours spent with Dr. Otto Herrigel who bred Diana’s James Bond and Diana’s
Gugi from which our Excelsus Galen line is built.
Excelsus Pacific had very few calves in his first year having been used as a twelve month
old bull and has scored 7/9 from four heifers. His 2012 calf crop is phenomenal and is a
worthy heir to his sire PRR Prevail.
Excelsus Patriarch was used for half a season and then replaced as a part of our rotational
policy. We only got four females from Patriarch and the two up for Inspection scored 8/9
Imported Genetics makes a huge impact at Excelsus Landgoed
If you consider the fact that 23 of the 51 heifers inspected were directly from our imported genetic program and also that Pacific and Patriarch are
sons of this program meaning over half this batch are bred from American or Namibian bulls. All these bulls scored highly and gives us a strong
polled base to work from. These are all bulls that have been carefully selected and bred carefully to the right type female. The Imported bulls are also
polled and homozygous polled bulls bringing a sharp injection of polled gene into the mix.
Pine Ridge Ranching remains the focus of our importation program and in our opinion the pinnacle of Simbra breeding.
