CODE OF CONDUCT

The wide variety of courses and programs offered give all students the chance to develop their potential. A certain standard of conduct is expected from all students. The basic expectation is that all students will conform to a standard of behavior that is generally accepted as reasonable and in keeping with the values and expectations of our community. All students will behave in a way that will bring pride to the individual as well as the school as a whole.

ACTIVITIES The following activities are available to students during the school year:Astronomy Club, Automotive Club, Badminton, Basketball, Business Case Competition Club, Business Club, Cheerleading, Christian Ethics Mission Trip, Cross Country, Curling, Drama Club, Football, Gay Straight Alliance, Golf, Improv Games, Intramurals, Iron Chefs, Jazz Band, Mathletics, Muna, Musical, Outdoor Club, Photography Shutterbugs, Radio Show, Random Acts of Kindness, Rodeo Club, Shouts, Skills Canada, Soccer, Social Justice, SRC, Table Tennis, Track & Field, Volleyball, Welding/Machining, Wired “Select Choir”, Yearbook. No extra-curricular activities are to be scheduled for ECS students during EXAM WEEK. Exam week is defined as starting on the last day of classes and ending on the day of the last exam. Students with poor attendance or who are not being successful in their classes may be asked to discontinue extra-curricular activities.

ALCOHOL AND DRUGS

The Estevan Comprehensive School believes that the function of the school is to educate and guide individuals in an alcohol and drug free learning environment. The school will not tolerate the use or possession of alcohol or drugs in school or at school related activities. It is hoped that the consequences will provide assurance to those who are in need of counseling and rehabilitation, and will serve as a deterrent to students who may be using alcohol and drugs. The school policy, which can be found on the ECS website, outlines the regulations for each of the following:

Regular attendance is a key indicator of a student’s commitment to achieving excellence and success. Parents may access daily attendance records through the HomeLogic system. The goal of the ECS attendance program is to increase student success by promoting daily attendance and to help students develop responsibilities in preparation for attendance expectations in their future careers. All students are expected to attend all classes every day. Although students are responsible for all work missed, being absent from class often means lost opportunities and experiences that cannot be made up through homework. Parents/guardians are asked to use the SchoolMessenger system to contact the school on, or before the day of their son/daughter’s absence. The absence will then be designated as “explained.” It is understood that an absence from school may be necessary from time to time. However, when a parent/guardian gives permission for an absence for illness or any other circumstances which the family considers to be sufficient, the parent/guardian also assumes responsibility for results of absences, such as lower or failing grades, or a much increased homework load.

Student attendance will be designated in one of six ways; “Explained”, “Ill”, “Suspended”, “Curricular”, “Medical”, or “Unexplained”. Curricular absences do not count in a student’s total absences (includes any school activities, sports, appointments with councilors in the school or buses not running) If buses are cancelled, please notify the school as we do not know which students take the bus. Response Details – (Skips) If the parent does not confirm the absence. Although every student’s situation will be treated on an individual basis, the following guidelines will apply in assisting students to be responsible for their attendance. At the end of every school day the school will send out attendance phone calls through the School Information System. In addition, a list of all unexplained absences is created.

Response Details – (Chronic Absences). These are absences that have been confirmed (explained), but the absences have resulted in academic difficulty in the class. In addition to the parent checking HomeLogic, the classroom teacher will notify the parent that the student is having difficulty in the class due to a lack of attendance. - The student will be referred to the Student Support team to work with student services and administration to put supports in place with the intent of improved attendance. - If the absences are out of the control of the student/family (ex: medical) an alternate plan between the teacher and parent will be developed. - Decisions regarding attendance will be determined on an individual student basis. Action taken for one student will not constitute a precedent for other students.

Lates - It is the student’s responsibility to be ON TIME for all classes. It is the expectation that all students are in the classroom prior to the sounding of the bell. Habitual tardiness will be considered a discipline issue and dealt with on an individual student basis.

AWARDS

Two separate Awards ceremonies are held in June to recognize student success in academic and extra-curricular activities. One evening is dedicated to academic and non-sporting activity awards and scholarships. The second evening will highlight athletic involvement. Three awards may be presented for each extra-curricular non-sporting club and for each athletic team. Scholarships/Bursaries Scholarships are provided to ECS graduates. All grade 12 students who meet the criteria are eligible to apply for these scholarships. Local scholarship applications are usually available the end of March and are awarded at the June Awards Night. Mr. and Miss ECS Awards Assuming there are suitable candidates, Mr. and Miss ECS Grade 9, 10, 11 & 12 will be selected annually. Candidates are nominated by the staff and winners are determined by ballot. To qualify for Mr. or Miss ECS, a student must achieve a high academic standing, participate in a variety of extra-curricular activities, and be active in supporting ECS activities. Candidates must be a leader and be respected by teachers and students. They also need to work to improve the conditions at ECS and to promote school spirit.

BELL AND PERIOD SCHEDULE

*Note: In the event a teacher is late for the beginning of a class, students are to wait quietly until the teacher arrives and not leave the area of the classroom. One student from the class may approach the office to inquire about the situation.

CAFETERIA Parents/guardians may purchase a meal account so their child can buy food in the cafeteria. Cash or cheques may be sent with the student and given to the cafeteria staff. Deductions will be made when food is purchased. Students are responsible for cleaning their tables and trays, and throwing away their garbage. Students who do not follow the rules of the cafeteria and/or do not follow the directions of the cafeteria supervisor, may have their cafeteria privileges suspended.

CELL PHONES/ELECTRONIC DEVICES

The Estevan Comprehensive School believes there are times when electronic devices can be a valuable tool for learning. We also understand there are times these devices become a distraction from the assigned work. Teachers will deal with the unwanted use of electronic devices as they do with any other off-task behavior. If the issue persists, students may be asked to report to the office to discuss the matter with administration. The use of electronic devices will continue to be prohibited in sensitive areas such as washrooms and will not be allowed during exam times. Any other class time use will be at the teacher’s discretion.

COURSE/CLASS LOAD Grade 9, 10 and 11 students should carry a full load (enrolled in 5 classes each semester). Grade 12 students should enroll in at least 4 classes each semester. Exceptions to this rule are made for adult students, students who return for one semester to complete their credit standings, and students who are Grade 12 graduates.

DANCE POLICY

- Doors open at 7:30 and close at 9:00 unless otherwise specified. - All students and guests must pass a breathalyzer test. - Invited guests by pre-approved invitations only. - Guests will not be admitted unless accompanied by their ECS host student. - ECS host students are responsible for their own and their guest’s behavior.

- No re-admissions (if you leave, you are out). - No clothing which violates ECS dress code.

- No admission on suspicion of any banned substance. Breathalyzers are used at the door. - No smoking. - No foul language, boisterous or inappropriate behavior, or un-cooperative attitudes. Any of these form the basis for expulsion from the building, and for further sanctions to be applied as per ECS disciplinary policies.

DISCIPLINE The following steps will be taken in situations that require disciplinary action. - Teacher handles to best of his/her ability. - If problem continues, then referred to administration. - Administration meets with student and conducts an investigation. If necessary, parental involvement will be sought. - Problem continues – suspension, removal from class, or alternate measures will be used.

DRESS CODE

The purpose of a dress policy is to reflect and promote respect for self and others. Students are encouraged to develop a sense of pride in themselves and in our school. Parents and ECS staff work together to prepare students for success, now and in the future. School should be considered a place of business, where the business is learning. Students and staff are expected to dress accordingly. - Dress and appearance should reflect cleanliness, tidiness, neatness and appropriateness and not interfere with student learning. - Messages (written or symbolic) on clothing must be appropriate for school (ex: nothing illegal, obscene, profane, or in bad taste. Nothing promoting alcohol or controlled substances.) - Hats/caps/hoods/headwear may be worn in Common areas at ECS. Some teachers may have a rule asking students to please remove their hats in class.

EVALUATION/ASSESSMENT ECS uses a system of continuous evaluation. Final marks are based more on day-to-day conversations, observations and evaluation of students as they go about their studies, and less on the comprehensive final. This system is based on: - Evaluation being directly related to all the activities of a class, experiments, oral work, performance, tests. - Evaluation being continuous so that teacher and student have a current record of the student’s performance, and to ensure that all aspects of a course load are evaluated. - Assessment being used to identify areas of weakness for the teacher and student so that remedial measures may be taken. - Evaluation being useful as a means of pacing the rate of advancement of a student into new work, new courses, and succeeding levels of study. - Assessment marks will be posted by teacher on HomeLogic. - As an additional support, students may be placed in a lunch hour study to complete outstanding assignments.

EXPECTATIONS OF STUDENTS

Each student will be in the classroom for classes at the sound of the bell. Students will come to class with the proper texts, paper and pen or pencil. Students shall do homework assignments as they are assigned. Each student is expected to remain in the class for the duration of the class. Students are expected to follow reasonable requests from all staff members.

FIGHTING Deliberate involvement in fighting will automatically invoke a minimum 5-day suspension.

FINAL EXAM POLICY

Any request for change in exam dates must be directed to the principal, who will consult with the classroom teacher involved. Students who fail to report to a final exam room at the time prescribed on the final exam schedule and who have not made alternate arrangements with the principal or classroom teacher in advance, shall receive a mark of 0% for the final exam portion of the course. Students required to write Grade 12 finals may be required to write either a departmental or accredited exam.

FOOD AND DRINK

In general, food is not to be consumed anywhere other than in the cafeteria, courtyard or foyer.

GRADUATION

Each school year the administration and staff of ECS hold a graduation ceremony to recognize ECS graduates. In order for a student to be eligible to participate in the graduation ceremony, he/ she must be registered at ECS in a minimum of 24 credits as required by the Ministry of Education up to and including two weeks prior to graduation ceremonies. - Each graduate may invite 3 guests (extra tickets may be available). - Cap and gown is the recognized mode of dress for graduation. - Graduation and related events shall be organized by the Graduation Advisors, plus the chairpersons of the graduation committees in cooperation with ECS Administration.

HARASSMENT Stated in simple form, ECS will not tolerate physical, verbal, mental, emotional, or any other form of harassment. The preamble to the SECPSD Administrative Procedure #412 states: “SE Cornerstone Public School division believes all students should receive educational services and enjoy the benefits that flow from being part of a safe, welcoming school community that is free from harassment and violence. All students should display respect, tolerance, care and compassion for others, and no student should condone or participate in any actions that may be regarded as demeaning, derogatory or discriminatory. To this end, the division commits itself to create and maintain school community environments where all people are treated with dignity and respect.” Key points in the Board’s Harassment Policy are: The framework for the definition of harassment comes from The Saskatchewan Human Rights Code and/or the Saskatchewan Occupational Health and Safety Act. Authority to act on the definition comes from powers granted in the Education Act. The following points outline the process to be used if a student believes he/she is being harassed:

- The student should try and talk to the other party and request them to stop the objectionable behavior.

- If a student knows another student is being harassed he/she should support that student and encourage them to report the harassment. - If a student cannot confront the harasser, or if harassment continues after a request has been made that it stop, the student is advised to report to a teacher, the school social worker, or the principal - The teacher or social worker receiving the complaint shall speak directly with the alleged harasser and attempt to resolve the situation in an informal manner. The incident should be reported to the principal. - If the matter cannot be resolved informally, or is of a serious nature the principal will investigate. All parties, including students and parents will be informed of the investigation and a written report will be given to the Director. - If disciplinary action is required, factors such as severity, persistence, attitude and cooperation will be taken into account, and a variety of sanctions up to and including expulsion may be applied.

- If a transfer from classes, a room, or a school is consequence of the case, the harasser will be transferred, not the complainant.

HOMELOGIC

Parents may check their child’s marks, attendance, assignments, etc. by logging onto HomeLogic. The following steps provide instruction for creating a new account: 1. Go to www.cornerstonesd.ca website, scroll down and choose ‘For Parents’ tab 2. Scroll down and click on ‘HomeLogic Parent Portal’; then ‘HomeLogic’ 3. Click on New User below the login button; select ‘Southeast Cornerstone School Division’ 4. Choose ‘Parent/Guardian’ 5. Fill in required information. Use full legal names– not abbreviations and no spaces between numbers

6. If your email does not appear, enter your email and click register 7. You will be sent an email with your user name and password. If you have trouble logging in with this password or you do not receive an email, please contact the school.

LANGUAGE

Students are not to use language that is profane, offensive or disrespectful. A student found to have used such language will be disciplined by warning, removal from class, or suspension.

LATE ENROLLMENT POLICY (JOINING A CLASS AFTER DAY 1)

All class changes are to be made within the first five days of the commencement of each semester. Students may be admitted to a class at any time at the discretion of the teacher in charge. In cases where admission is requested after the first 30 class days of a semester, there must be special circumstances to justify the admission (such as transfer from another school, extended hospitalization, a “repeat” student in that course, or some reason of equal consequence).

LIBRARY - GREGG TROUT RESOURCE CENTRE The school library is an ideal place for research, homework, studying or browsing for a good book. It is open 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday - Friday. The Library can assist you in finding material. Students may use the library during lunch hours and spares. All students in good standing in the library may borrow materials. Students are responsible for returning the material on time and for paying for lost or damaged material signed out in their names. Borrowing periods are approximately three weeks for most books; overnight for encyclopedias and new magazines.

LOCKERS

Each student is assigned a locker for his/her personal use, and is required to use a school lock. Students are required to use only the locker assigned to them and are responsible for all material found in that locker. This lock and locker remains the property of the school. Money or other valuables should not be left in the lockers. The school assumes no responsibility for lost articles or money. All areas of ECS are the property of the Cornerstone Public School Division and subject to search and seizure of banned substances at any time by administration. Administration has the privilege of opening lockers if there are reasonable grounds to believe that a breach of school rules is being or has been committed. Any liquor, drugs or other contraband discovered in school lockers shall be reported to City Police and appropriate disciplinary action will be taken.

MAKE-UP EXAMS

Teachers may ask students that miss an exam to write the exam during their lunch when they return or during Flex Time. Alternate arrangements may also be made as long as it is acceptable to the classroom teacher.

PARKING Students are permitted to park on school premises as a matter of privilege, not of right. The following regulations apply: - Students may park in the student parking lot only. - Students who consistently park in areas not designated for student parking, may be ticketed, and may lose the privilege of parking a vehicle on ECS property. - Inappropriate use of vehicle may result in loss of vehicle privileges at ECS. - Employees of the Board retain authority to conduct routine patrols of student parking lots and inspections of the exteriors of student automobiles on school property. - Employees of the Board may inspect the interiors of student automobiles whenever a school official has reasonable suspicion to believe illegal or unauthorized materials are contained inside the automobile. - Such patrols and inspections may be conducted without notice, without student consent and without a search warrant. - If a student fails to provide access to the interior of his car upon request by an employee of the Board, the student may be subject to school disciplinary action. - Students park in the parking lot at their own risk. The school is not responsible for vehicles which are damaged. - Students are to drive on designated roadways only.

PHOTOCOPYING

Students are asked to make use of the photocopier and printer in the Library. Printing in the office is reserved for staff use.

RECOVERY OF MATERIALS AND UNPAID ACCOUNTS

The careless treatment, abuse and loss of books, library materials and other educational materials provided to students is a serious budget issue. To minimize replacement costs, the names of all students who have not returned any texts, instructional materials, or tools, or who have other accounts overdue will be listed by all course teachers at the end of each semester. Invoices for missing materials will be mailed home.

RESPECT FOR PROPERTY

Students will be held responsible for any damages for which they are found willfully responsible. Charges equal to the cost of repairs will be levied in any such case.

SECOND ENGLISH

Students who fail English at any level will fall behind in this requirement. Statistics show that students carrying a double English load are subject to failure; therefore, ECS policy is that no student will knowingly be allowed to register in two English courses in the same semester, until within one semester of his/her graduating year.

STUDENT FEES Certain elective classes, because of their nature and the activities offered, require students to pay extra fees for materials, equipment or services. Grade 10 PAA courses are offered at no charge, unless the student chooses to do something outside of the required assignments. These charges are: - Auto body - Cost of expenses for painting or repairs - Construction - Project’s cost paid by students for Construction 20/30 - Welding - Gloves $6 - Physical Education - All students enrolled in Phys Ed classes are encouraged to purchase a Phys Ed uniform (approx. $36) and safety glasses ($3) which must be worn by the student in Phys Ed classes. Activities such as golf, swimming, bowling, etc. may be scheduled in PE 20 & 30 and students are expected to pay fees as they are required (Maximum $50.) - AP ELA (30) - Students enrolled in ELA 30 AP may elect to write the AP exam at a cost of approximately $110. - All construction, electricity, mechanics, welding and machining classes require safety glasses. ($3)

STUDENT REPORTS

Marks for all students in grade 9-12 will be available to parents, on-line through HomeLogic. Information can be found in this handbook under ‘HomeLogic’. Grade 9-12 students will have report cards issued twice each semester (midterm and final reports).

STUDENT RIGHTS

Each student has the right to expect: - Reasonable and thorough instruction - Fair and equal treatment Each student has the right to knowledge of: - Course content - Dates and conditions of all assignments due - Method of evaluation Students must be prepared to accept responsibility along with rights. This means that students must comply with school regulations and policies as a condition of remaining a student at ECS.

STUDENT SERVICES CENTRE

Our services include: post-secondary information (calendars, applications, scholarships/bursaries), career search inventories, counseling services, assistance to parents and teachers and student assessment services. The school personal counselors, and addictions counselor, have offices in the Student Services Centre.

SUSPENSION POLICY ECS students may find themselves suspended from a class or all classes for serious violations of ECS school policy. Suspensions may be served at home under parent supervision or "in school". The student may also lose extracurricular privileges.

TELEPHONE USE

A student phone is available at the office for communication with parents/ guardians.

TOBACCO/TOBACCO PRODUCTS The use of tobacco or tobacco products or smokeless cigarettes is not allowed at ECS or on ECS property. The school continues to work with the Estevan Police Service to monitor and address incidents of tobacco use.

USE OF SCHOOL FACILITIES

The school should and can be used by all students. There are two simple but reasonable regulations governing the use of school facilities. First, all activities not regularly scheduled must receive the approval of the principal, and second, all student activities must be under the supervision of a teacher.

WITHDRAWAL FROM CLASS POLICY Administration will approve a request for withdrawal from a class for Grade 10-12 students provided the proper form is obtained and contains written consent from the following, parent/guardian, class teacher, homeroom teacher and student services. Grade 9 students are not allowed to drop classes. Student Services will discuss the effect that withdrawing from class may have on graduation requirements. Students who withdraw from any class during the current semester beyond 10 days after midterm reports may receive a failing mark at the end of the semester at the discretion of the teacher.

WITHDRAWAL FROM SCHOOL POLICY

Any student withdrawing from school must obtain a Student Withdrawal Form and follow the steps of returning texts, getting signatures, and reporting to the office to complete the process.

ACCEPTABLE USE OF COMPUTERS, NETWORK AND INTERNET This is an abridged version of Cornerstone’s Acceptable Use Policy. The complete policy is available on the division website. Students are urged to read the complete policy. The ECS network is provided for students to conduct research. Independent access to network services is provided to students who agree to act in a considerate and responsible manner. Parent permission is required for all students. Access is a privilege, not a right. Individual users of the school’s computer network are responsible for their behavior and communications over this network. It is presumed that users will comply with school standards and will honor the agreement they have signed. Network storage areas are the property of the Cornerstone Public School Division. Users should not expect that files stored on school servers will be private. Technology systems may be inspected, monitored or modified at any time. The following uses of the school’s computer system are considered unacceptable: Personal Safety - Users will not post personal contact information about themselves or other people. Illegal Activities - Users will not attempt to go beyond their authorized access. This includes attempting to log in through another person’s account or access another person’s files. - Users will not make deliberate attempts to disrupt the computer system performance or destroy data by spreading computer viruses or by any other means. - Users will not harm or destroy data of another user, the Internet, the network or any equipment belonging to the SE Cornerstone Public School Division. - Users will not use the school system to engage in any other illegal act defined by the law. System Security - Under no conditions should a user provide his/her username and password to another person. - Users will not create or willfully distribute computer viruses, malware or spyware. - Users will not change or attempt to change any of the system settings on any of the school’s computers. Respect for Privacy - Users will not re-post a message that was sent to them privately without permission of the person who sent them the message. Users will use the system only for educational, instructional, and professional activities. Students will not download files without permission from the Instructional Technology Coordinator. Users will not post chain letters or engage in “spamming” or “phishing.” Users will not access file-sharing programs. Users will not play music or live radio over the Internet, or stream movie trailers and music videos. This is an inappropriate use of bandwidth. Users will not play games on the Internet. Users will not use MSN messenger or any other pop-up messenger services. Users will not access chat lines. Users will not use the system for commercial purposes or product advertisement. Inappropriate Language - Users will not use obscene, profane, lewd, vulgar, rude, inflammatory, threatening, or disrespectful language in public messages or on web pages. Users will not engage in personal attacks or harass another person. Plagiarism and Copyright Infringement - Users will not plagiarize works that they find on the Internet, and will respect the rights of copyright owners.

Inappropriate Access to Material - Users will not use the school’s system to access, create, store or distribute any content that is profane or obscene (pornography), that advocates illegal acts, or that advocates violence or discrimination towards other people (hate literature). Violations to this Agreement - ECS will cooperate fully with law enforcement officials in any investigation concerning to or relating to any illegal activities conducted through the school system. In the event there is an allegation that a student has violated the division’s Acceptable Use Policy, the student will be provided with an opportunity to be heard as set forth in the school’s policy. Student disciplinary actions will be directly related to the violation and will encourage the self-discipline necessary to appropriately utilize an electronic network. If the alleged violation also involves a violation of other provisions of the school or school division policy, the violation will be handled in accordance with the applicable provision of that policy. Possible implications may include the complete suspension of access to the school’s network for a determined period of time.
