ECU’s staff profile has a high proportion of female staff (60%) and compares well against sector benchmarks for representation of women at senior academic and professional levels.

ECU conducts a staff survey on a two-year cycle. The 2018 ECU Staff Survey results show significantly increased satisfaction in the areas of Teaching, Diversity and Technology since the previous survey.

ECU survey results were very positive overall when compared against the sector, the most positive results being for:

• Staff being aware of and believing in ECU’s values;

• Staff are clear on how they contribute to the success of ECU;

• Genuine support from immediate line manager for equality between women and men;

• Support for engaged teaching and making good use of technology;

• Overall staff are satisfied with their job; and

• Organisation commitment – staff are proud to tell people they work at ECU.

ECU was also rated as having a high priority on workplace health and safety.

STAFFECU has a strongly committed staff of approximately 1,800 employed on a full-time, part-time and sessional basis.

The proportion of academic staff with Doctoral qualifications has increased consistently since 2008. PROFESSOR ROBERT NEWTONAssociate Dean, School of Medical and Exercise Science Research Professor, Exercise Medicine Research Institute.

My principal research focus is exercise medicine for the management of cancer and treatment side-effects with particular emphasis on identifying and understanding the biological mechanisms by which exercise medicine suppresses tumour progression.

In 2002 when I was invited to come to interview at ECU and see the University I was highly impressed with the facilities, staff and university leaders.

I have seen all of the major laboratories and departments in my field in the world and can state that the capability at ECU then and now is second to none.

In my field of medicine and health, Perth in Western Australia is a particularly vibrant environment for research collaboration. There is a high concentration of world-class facilities, research scientists and clinicians developing and translating internationally- competitive solutions to contemporary health issues. The openness and collegiality of academics and clinicians in Perth is exemplary and refreshing.

ECU provides a very high level of support for research leaders to excel, grow their team and the capability to compete nationally and internationally for research funding, industry engagement and publication. This support features targeted funding for early career researchers, support for postdoctoral fellows, ready availability of excellent scholarships for quality postgraduate research students, very generous cash and in-kind contributions to industry and competitive external grant applications, and a strong commitment to infrastructure development and equipment acquisition.

The existing facilities at ECU are at world standard for research, teaching and engagement with the most modern buildings and equipment and new infrastructure constantly being added.

There are also numerous smaller start-up and established biomedical companies in Western Australia which are exciting to work with and are highly engaged with local researchers.

ECU’s research is characterised by its fundamental commitment to the pathway from basic research to translation to innovative implementation (including practice, service delivery, and industry adoption).

ECU’s commitment to this research pathway is reflected in its cross-cutting approach to research across each of its research themes and priority areas. These cross-cutting approaches are:

• A strong research–practice interface, including research-led practice and practice-led research, that involves and engages the professions, service-delivery agencies and other end- users (patients, clients, consumers, industry).

• Strengthening the evidence base by responding to the needs of high-end practitioners, policy-makers, guideline developers, activists, companies and governments, thereby ensuring they have access to expert advice and robust data for decision-making.

• Assessment, evaluation, advocacy, policy-making throughout all stages of planning, measurement and monitoring as well as the early stages of innovation.

LELIA GREENECU Professor of Communications and Chief Investigator, ARC Centre of Excellence for Creative Industries and Innovation

Edith Cowan University has an amazing energy for engagement on the one hand and transformation on the other.

Although I have worked here for over thirty years, the dynamism of the place excites me in a way in which my seven years with BBC Television failed to do. Working at ECU is intellectually challenging, emotionally satisfying and personally rewarding. Colleagues and students help create a friendly and supportive environment.

In my core areas of research – Communications and Media Studies, and Cultural Studies – the School of Arts and Humanities is amongst the most successful grant winners in Australia, and the outstanding performer in the State. ECU encourages excellence and collaboration, no matter where in the world these opportunities arise. For example, since 2006, I have been closely involved with a number of international networks funded by the European Commission’s Safer Internet Programme, COST Action, 7th Framework Programme and Horizon 2020. The University was whole-hearted in supporting these international engagements.

Earlier in my career, before I was a Professor, ECU also supported my work with the United Nations-endorsed Digital Review of Asia Pacific, which took me to a number of East Asian countries (2003-9).

The ECU research office invests in areas that combine excellence and opportunity, and supports both.

Although my research involves lots of travel, I’m always glad to get back home. Perth is a gorgeous place to live. It’s visually beautiful and culturally vibrant with an active arts scene and numerous opportunities to make the most of an energising Mediterranean-style climate. ECU’s great social and built environment complements this context.

PROFESSOR DAVID SUTERProfessor of Computer Science ECU School of Science

I came to ECU because of the opportunity to take up a research focused position, and to start up a new research group that is working on a number of exciting projects with a medical focus. ECU is willing to invest in good research.

ECU has some specific advantages over other universities, in part due to its youth and relatively small size. For example, it seems much easier here to form interdisciplinary teams. Likewise, we are starting to work with a small company on technology that could relate to learning technologies and general human computer interaction.

I’ve now lived in Adelaide, Melbourne and Perth. Each is a good place to live, but Perth has the best size – at around 2million people it is roughly twice the size of Adelaide, and less than half the size of Melbourne. It’s a size that gives all of the benefits of a large modern city without much of the drawbacks in congestion, pollution, cost of living, etc.

Perth also has natural beauty and wilderness (some of less populated places on the planet) on its doorstep, including a great lush green and scenic south coast region, that’s great for weekends away.

STEFAN IGLAUERProfessor of Petroleum Engineering ECU School of Engineering

At ECU we are building a new Petroleum Engineering discipline, which is an exciting and rare opportunity where I can realise my research vision.

The university has placed significant investment into our discipline. While the facility is not yet completely finished, this investment will lead to ECU having one of the best Petroleum Engineering laboratories in the whole world.

This opportunity has also enabled me to embark on several novel research streams which I believe can have high scientific and societal impact, including the impact of fossil fuel usage on society and environment, how these resources are produced, or around technologies that can substantially mitigate global warming.

I’ve discovered why Perth is one of the top ten cities in the world, and generally, Australia is a great country where people are kind and relaxed. The standard of living is very high – from schools to medical care – with plenty of sunshine and beaches close by.

EVALOTTE MORELIUSProfessor of Nursing, Children and Young People ECU School of Nursing & Midwifery

I was looking for a smaller university without too many organisational levels. I’ve found ECU to be a modern, upcoming uni, not stuck in old traditions, nor afraid of ‘new thinking’.

I could also sense that Nursing was an appreciated and valued subject at ECU, which was highly important to me. The School of Nursing and Midwifery showed a genuine interest in Paediatric Nursing, in both education and research, and I found several colleagues sharing my research interests. The School could also offer collaboration with the Perth Children’s Hospital, and that attracted me a lot.

Since I came to ECU I’ve had the opportunity to focus on my research and develop a research program around sick children’s stress. Coming from a position with heavy administrative and teaching responsibilities as the Head of Nursing Science and the leader of the paediatric master program in Sweden, this is wonderful. I loved my last job, but finally being able to put all my energy into research is great.

Perth is a beautiful city, big and small at the same time. There is so much to discover here and every suburb has its own charm. As in other big cities, there is always something going on. And if not, you can make up your own day trip to the surroundings; the sea, the Karri forest, the river, walking trails, the wineries…and the weather is absolutely wonderful!

ECU’s two largest campuses are located in Perth, the capital of Western Australia. Perth is Australia’s fastest-growing city and is vibrant, sophisticated and safe, with a high standard of living.

Perth is regularly rated among the top cities in the world for liveability1.

Home to almost 2 million people, and one of Australia’s most multicultural cities, with around 35% of its citizens being born in another country, Perth has also been rated the world’s #2 city for friendliness2.

And let’s not forget the weather. Perth enjoys the most days of sunshine of all of Australia’s major cities. The mild Mediterranean climate, endless blue skies, fresh air and brilliant white beaches are hard to beat!

Perth also benefits from sharing a similar time zone to many Asian cities. It’s also the closest Australian capital to cities in Asia, Africa, and Europe.1Source: The Economist’s annual liveability survey. 2Source: Conde Nast Friendliest Cities in the World 2017
