introduction : ex æquo

All things are of equal value. Hierarchies have collapsed. Today, everyone can decide what is beautiful, what is true. And objection is no longer part of this world. The majority has been too great a disappointment, from now on each opinion counts. Thus, values fade. Beauty and ugliness are no longer opposites. No longer exist. No more than truth and untruth. Strength and weakness. The old and the modern. The people has freed its word. And the world has entered an unprecedented cacophony. No sorting, no filter. All is said, all is accomplished. Freedom and equality are no longer tempered by solidarity, but are exacerbated by individualism. I think; therefore, I yell. The truth has become a plural. No one is wrong any longer, since everyone is right. This era is no longer one of debates, but of demands. Each individual has become its own master. And its own slave.

Je pense donc je crie (I think therefore I yale).

The door of possibilities has opened. The world has become a maelstrom everyone can tap into. Past, forgotten, depreciated heritages find a space to express themselves. Reborn from the ashes of the collective memory, they are at disposal. They are there, beside the most insane innova-tions. Because this new world is also a chance to reinvent everything. A chance that many seize. And as will the rules of our time, everyone has the right to assert their truth. Guarantors of innovation as well as guards of ancient know-how. In each field, the past and the future seem to be embracing each other. Distance and closeness. Beauty and ugliness. Humanity is experiencing its Big Crunch. Everything is reunited in only one point. Perhaps the best definition of the present. Of our present.

aestheticSome who had tired of modernism looked in the rear-view mirror. What they saw dazzled them. Beauty was there. Since always. Ancestral. All we need to do is to tap into our common heritage. This is in any case, the opinion of a certain school of thought. Of those who believe that creation is not possible without roots. But some try the contrary. While believing that creation is only possible by clearing out the past. While the buds of this movement are hardly visible, one can already imagine their first flowers. Unknown beauties predicting unique bouquets. Two opposite movements which do however twine our reality.

A-NRDStones like thousand-year-old totems, lit up by neons, white lights of human attempts to chase away the darkness. A combination of the senses, of form and eras so improbable that, they are finally, obvious. The cold of the street moving into the cocoon. What is aggressive becomes reassuring. What is hard becomes a soft nest. The Milanese Alessio Nardi fed off multiple disciplines and did not make a choice. He combined, mixed, joined… because the era allows it. Because the world allows it. It has always allowed it. We merely discover it today. After all, why oppose the new and the old? And what if tomorrow were written with the ink of wisdom and the brush of youth ?

spatialEverything was there. Well in its place. For so long that without the intervention of man, eternity seemed his future. The puzzle is perfect. Most importantly, don’t touch anything. The humility of the creator consists in erasing himself before this layout, so lengthily matured. An act of wisdom. But man is an animal with two legs, who needs the support of his moderation just like his madness to find his balance. So, he disrupts everything. Deals the cards anew. A swarming flight. Too curious not to try. And after all, why deprive oneself? Beauty can also be born from chaos. Order and disorder assert their rights. And presto. They are not incompatible. On the contrary.

DIAMOND CUTTER DIAMANTOSCOPEWhat is art, if not a new perspective on the world? What is street art, if it is not art given to everyone? Hence, the Diamond cutter is perhaps the complete artist. In 2014, this 30-year resident of Caen installs observation telescopes with kaleidoscopic effects in the most symbolic places of Paris. It’s like seeing through the eyes of the good Doctor Hoffmann. Destructuring his world in a split second. Reconsidering space and culture. Plunging into another possibility. The Diamond cutter disseminated Alice’s burrows everywhere in the French capital. Because today, arguments weigh no longer. As everyone is certain of their opinion. Thus, one must show. Free the path. Destabilize orientation, to disrupt certainties.

culturalHumanity was divided into cities, countries, continents. Into castes, communities, civilizations. Each one dominating the other in turn. Each one imposing its culture and erasing the others. A play of hierarchy which annoys the spectators. Impossible to settle, to prioritize. The voices of the whole world make themselves heard and all appear legitimate. Thus, we flash back to forgotten knowledge. Minorities finally find open ears. And everywhere, an already existing creativity expresses itself once more. Worn out by atavistic dominations, some prefer to no longerspeak of the past. This past bearing painful memories. Of an overly dangerous structure. Destructive. So, new paths take shape. Never taken. Thronging the future, next to the old paths.

JEFFREY GIBSONBorn in Colorado, Jeffrey Gibson spent part of his childhood in Korea and Germany. Chactas and Cherokee blood runs through his veins. Mix of cultures, this artist knows what that means. Or perhaps he does not know, as one is unaware of what is innate. His punching bags make this obvious. A mix of this symbol of the popular culture, we hit like an outlet, like personified evil, an open door towards a controlled world. And of the old totems, that we consult like an outlet, like a divine personification, open door towards a higher world. Contradictory? Complementary? Impossible to say. Jeffrey Gibson leaves things open to interpretation. Because today, nothing is definite.

elementaryThis new horizontality is so deep that it is almost quantic. It modifies the flesh of our reality itself. Appearances change. The tree of life is redefined in its essence. Sometimes drawing from its roots. Sometimes giving up seeds of innovation to the wind of the future. The eternal elements of the universe remain. Determined to reassert their importance. They enfold our time, leaving the shadows where they had been relegated by man. But they divide this world with a rule less creativity. As if life itself wanted to attempt being reinvented. To give a new face. Each individual asserts his voice, his originality, his importance. The same applies to the universe. Tomorrow, atoms will take selfies.

PORTER + BOWMANNothing is ever as simple, as smooth as man would like to have believe. Humanity is starting to realize that. The universe wants to use this opportunity to further prove its complexity. Like the water of the Lady Di-Memorial in London. Following a sometimes-perfect ground, sometimes chaotic, broad or narrow. Using levels, the current accelerates or slows down. Like an image of a human life. Changing. As strong and imperceptible as a water current. Nothing is set. Everything moves. The memorial of the princess of Wales is a work financed by the public of historical mobilization and generosity.

We asserted horizontality. But it exceeded our hopes. Exceeded social organization to infiltrate in all the layers of our existence. We killed the kings, God, the icons, the elites. The people imposed its laws. Internet slipped absolute knowledge into everyone’s pocket. Hierarchies gradually lost all leverage. Hence everyone is in possession of the weapons of their own universe. A multitude of certainties are exposed to each other, with their own balances, their own laws, without ever sinking into total anarchism. There is nothing more to prove. It is enough to just be. In one last surge, the old system attempts to tell everyone they are right. The individual is glorified in a sometimes real, sometimes fictitious originality. The world is shouting that we all are extraordinary. And we decide to believe it. Even if it means forgetting that what is extraordinary cannot be that common.

obviously commonWe shot down the political elites, doubted the intellectuals, abused the spiritual and popular icons. We rejected what was forced upon us, as a whole. An emancipation express train. And the total disappearance of benchmarks. What had to happen, happened: reality replaced the truth. All that is, deserves to be glorified. Reality has become the infinite material of a creation without restriction. A piece of trash is not of lesser value than a rare ore. The assemblies are incongruous. Heretical even for a vision of the previous centuries. Defects are exposed like good features. In reaction to elitism, we enhance all that comes from below. Without distinction. In mud we trust.

In mud we trust.

introduction : ex æquoex æquo : broken down numbers en nombre décomposé

broken down numbersIf everything is equally valid, everything could be just one. But no. Humanity shot down hierarchies to create a resolutely new world. To provide itself with new tools. New prospects. It is out of the question to mix all the colors of this new pallet. Each one must exist to offer a new possibility. Each entity must stay separate to not risk closing a door. We want neither to eliminate, nor to mix. Each thing, each individual, each culture, each time are in each other’s presences without merging. The borders have the wind fully in their sails. The universe has just realized its potential, its richness, and is trying to tame them. It is still too early to look directly at the sun.

mixed reasoningDescartes doubted, to prove his existence. We affirm, to legitimize ours. I think… thus I am right. We are all right. The latest elites confirm it reassuringly every day. We do not want to be contradicted, but asserted. As we don’t have the power, we want to be right. Democracy has found its limit in individualism. The majority has become a minority like the others. The complexity of the world has frightened the peoples. Simplistic speeches have become reassuring. A safe haven. Thus essential. Thus true. The vox populi is creating new dogmas. As many as there are humans. There are no more universal laws, but there is a universality of laws.

1 - Eking it out."This piece is made from a large variety of timbers. In a sense it is recycled twice; all the pieces are off cuts from other projects, which were also created from recycled material. As with my other work in the series, this is an investigation of material and what lies beneath its surface; finding a beauty within. It’s about minimising waste, making do with what you have and to a certain extent allowing the material to govern the form."Rupert Herring - Auckland - New Zealand

introduction : ex æquoex æquo : in decomplexed exclusiveness en exclusivité décomplexée

in decomplexed exclusivenessCelebrity nourishes itself. We are no longer followed because we are brilliant, but we are brilliant because we are followed. Ego does not resist such temptation. Impossible. It swells before the possibility of its popularity. The scenes are multiple. Accessible from anywhere. Why remain anonymous when celebrity is within range of a click? We all believe that we deserve attention. Even the contents of our plates become prone to exposure. Celebrity is given to anyone. Poisoned chalice which leads to believe that it is deserved. We are no longer recognized for our actions, but for how we stage them. Trivialization of old marketing methods. Our identity has become our greater wealth. Its maintenance hence dictates the urgencies of our world.

Everything has been reviewed, case by case. For centuries man has been fighting against the differences of the castes. Of hierarchies. By access to others, to knowledge, to communication, we are levelling the last bumps. But one question remains: was this horizontality an end in itself? Tomorrow, humanity could rediscover that all things are not of equal value. That truth and beauty well exist, even if they are subjective. Then, after having viewed all that is possible, man will recreate a new hierarchy. A more just one perhaps. More flexible. But this horizontality could just as easily last. Or harden even. In this multitude of truths, where nobody is wrong, cohabitation is only possible between individuals sharing the same opinions. The world will then give up its Utopia of universalism to gather by group. Places of safety. Where everyone agrees. Where everyone is alike. The path to a more restricted, surer happiness. Perhaps more real.Is the glorified individual the star which will clarify our future or is it a simple shooting star?
