Draft of Declaration 12.7

by Jim Worley, Rules Committee ChairSpecial Assessments for Capital Improvements(a) Voting of Special Assessments: Any Special Assessment equaling less than

$1,001 for each lot due in a calendar year can be passed by a majority vote of the Board. Any Special Assessment equaling $1,001 or more must have the assent of a majority of the owners eligible to vote. A vote for a Special Assessment equaling $1,001 or more can be taken by written ballot in lieu of a meeting or personal vote, by proxy or absentee ballot at a meeting designated for that purpose.

We have had several members ask about the above draft section, and we have heard that there are several more comments circulating about this section.

When my Rules committee was given the job of reading and updating the documents for the Association the draft that came to us listed a much larger amount that the Board would be able to assess without member approval. After discussion my committee thought that the figure was much higher than would ever be necessary and we moved the amount down to $1,001.00.

We have a strong, healthy and solvent corporation, with a 30 year budget plan in place, and a Board who feels strongly about their fiduciary responsibilities. We also have a very good insurance system in place in the case of a major emergency, hopefully negating the reasons for a special assessment.

Family Golf Day 2015

by Diana and Allan LindbergAnother year already! Some players wished that we had tee times in the

morning, like past years, but we had a large and steady playing fi eld this year when we tried two half days. 73 players were on the course in the afternoons, starting at 2:00 pm Saturday and Sunday, July 11 and 12. We had some of the nicest weather we have enjoyed in recent years this year.

Thank you to the following:Our own Pro Shop: Chuck Siver, Jim Worley and Larry Parker for their help in

organizing the time slots. Country Cottage for 10% meal discount coupons available for day of play.Woodburn Homes Realty, Lorrie Cox and her son Ryan Boulton, for contributing

water and a snack for the players.Gift bags and door prizes were donated by Allan and Diana Lindberg. Drawings

for door prizes were held at the end of each day and the winners were called that day.

We also want to thank the 2014 board for allowing this event for the fourth year and allowing green fees to be forgiven for family members who come and play with our members. As you may remember, this event was started in the celebration for the 50th anniversary for Senior Estates.

Our hope is that we can continue this fun event. If you participated, and think it was a worthwhile, please let the 2015 board know so that it may continue.

Women’s Golf General Meeting June 15, , 2015

President – Janice Aiken called the meeting to order at 11:45 a.m. A quorum was determined followed by the Pledge of Allegiance. Minutes for May 18, 2015 as published in the News & Views on June 12, 2015, were approved with corrections.

Treasurers Report – Nancy Reed:Statement Balance 4/30/15 $4,019.36Deposits $5,364.00Expenses ($1,434.04)Balance as of 5/31/15 $7,949.32Secretary – Judy Fredricks: Read the report for Rose-A-Rama. There were 68

ladies playing. Had more sponsors than last year so were able to pay an additional $325 to players and give back $324 for seed money for next year. Thanks to sponsors – Woodburn Homes Realty, Ted Ahre CPA, McCully Realty, Marquis Physical Therapy and Legacy Financial. Also a big thank you to all the volunteers.

VP – Paula Kilgore: The Pro Shop was monitoring pace of play during Rose-A-Rama and noted that 2 groups were behind 2 holes, but did not say anything to the 2 groups. During discussion it was decided that a Marshall would give 2 warnings. If the pace did not improve after the second warning the group would be DQ’d. USGA rules for slow play were discussed, motion by Marge Epling seconded by Louise Davidson that we accept the USGA rules. She also mentioned that in a Tournament, playing through is not allowed. Again the subject of gross and net arose. Louise Davidson said the rule is that gross is applied for the Club Champion. Gross and net applies for flights only. Marilyn Dykes said this is true for both 9 & 18 holes. Discussion was held on adding the bake sale funds, $232, to the Championship. $600 was budgeted for the Championship. Motion was made by Marge Epling seconded by Louise Davidson that the bake sale funds be added to the Championship. Motion approved. We will need 4/6 volunteers to set up tables and chairs and decorate the day of the event; Wednesday, August 12, 2015. We will not be able to do anything in the dining hall prior to 10:30a.m. We should be done by 12 noon or shortly thereafter. Please think about it, if you are not planning to participate in the golf itself you could be a great help. On the subject of potluck or catered, Marge Epling moved we have a catered lunch after the Championship and that we use Country Cottage. Jeanette Johnson seconded. Motion passed. Update on Golf shirts. I received orders prior to Rose-A-Rama of 26 shirts, and I was able to take orders for 20 more shirts. That order was turned in last Thursday. The order takes 4 weeks so they should be ready sometime around July 1. If you haven’t paid for your shirts in the 2nd order, please do so now, so I can make the payment. I will get your shirts to you as soon as I get them.

COMMITTEE REPORTS:OGA – Nancy Littlemore: No Report.Membership & Books – Marge Epling: Reported the paid memberships as of

today: 18-hole 53, 9-hole 49, Social 11. Total 113. There are three new members for 9 holes: Linda Penland, Pat Saylor and Judy Taylor. New members for 18 holes: Michelle Boston and Vicki Lambert. Social –Louise Davidson: No Report.Handicap – Marlene Johnson: The Spring Handicap starts this week and is a

2 week tournament with the winner being the low net player of both days. Donna Jentzen is doing the scoring for the 18-hole ladies. And ladies, after you post your scores, please toss the score cards. Please only put score cards in the slot for scores that are not posted. That will be a great help.

Rules Committee – Susan Gsell: Absent with notice. No Report.Golf Committee Rep – Barbara Briskey: Absent with notice. Report for

June 8, 2015 was read by Janice Aiken: Tim O’Larey, Golf Chairman: Greens recovery: The Majority of the problem with the greens after aerification was a crane fly infestation. After making a granular fertilizer and fungicide application the greens seem to be on their way back. Irrigation: Irrigation has been running exceptionally well. The only problem area has been around the 10th green. The green heads have been repaired, still need to work on some heads in the rough. Spraying weeds around trees. Holes 4, 5, 13-16 left to do. Stump Removal. No progress made, other areas were a higher priority. This month we will be working on installing a berm by the property line to the left of the 10th green. (Where the

Women’s Golf General Meeting

sandbags are currently) The new sprayer should arrive this week. Then we start spraying for weeds in fairways and rough. Especially the clover. Tim noticed some trees, mainly the smaller ones, dogwood behind hole 16, two of the Aspens on hole 8 and one on hole 6 where it looks like someone took something and removed some bark. Tim is going to get pictures, not sure if this is some kind of vandalism. The length of the grass on the fairways was discussed. Some feel it needs to be just a little longer. Sharon Schaub, General Manager: Ray Bryant, ODOT Mid-Willamette Valley Area, Construction Coordinator for Shane Ottosen returned her calls regarding the north end of the sound wall on I-5. The State does not have the funds to continue the wall at this time. Ray agreed to look at the gap between the wall and the golf course to see what can be done. Ray said he will report back to her as soon as he has had a chance to view the site. The south wall will be completed by August. Chuck Siver, Golf Pro: Chuck wanted to know if OB stakes on hole #2 should be moved or left where they are. They are about 2 to 3 feet from the wall now. The committee felt they should be left as they are. Respectfully submitted, Barbara Briskey

Men’s Golf General Meeting July 7, 2015

The meeting was called to order by President Fred Bourne at 10 a.m. in the Dining Hall, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance.

Roll Call: A quorum was established. Officers and Committee Chairmen/Members present were: Fred Bourne, Len Westphal, Jim Worley, Chuck Johnson, Allan Lindberg, Paul Eaton, Clint Hansen, Bob Price, Stan Hiller, and Steve Hobson. A total of 19 members attended the meeting.

President’s Report: Before giving his report, President Bourne acknowledged the presence of Becky Butts who was there to provide the members with a report on the Rally for the Cure Tournament which begins on August 4, 2015. The Men’s Golf Club Rally for the Cure Play date is Thursday, August 6, 2015. Becky encouraged that we bring guests to play in this event. The cost is $20 for members and guests with all proceeds going to research for a cure for cancer. There will be a luncheon to celebrate survivors of cancer and also a raffle, the prizes including handmade quilts. There is a flyer in the Golf Lounge providing information about Rally for the Cure and entry fees are payable in the Pro Shop. Following Becky’s report, President Bourne announced the winners of the Spring Handicap and stated that the Match Play Tournament beginning on July 9, 2015, would field 32 players. Those golfers not playing in the Match Play on July 9 will be able to also play that day approximately one hour following the last Match. President Bourne then reported on the upcoming End of Watch Tournament to be held on Saturday, August 15, 2015. He stated that currently there are 25 foursomes signed up for the tournament, including 12 foursomes from Woodburn Estates & Golf. The entry fee is $40 for members of Woodburn Estates & Golf. President Bourne then reported that a raffle is being held for a young man who has cancer, the drawing being held on July 22, 2015, in the Country Cottage Restaurant. You do not have to be present to win. Raffle tickets can be purchased either in the Pro Shop or in the Country Cottage Restaurant.

Vice President’s Report: VP Len Westphal stated that there are still many tree limbs on the golf course that need to be trimmed. The Golf Committee will follow up on this issue.

Treasurer’s Report: Treasurer Jim Worley stated that Gene Stiles is not present today; therefore, no golf balls are available to be given to the members today. Perhaps at our next Meeting, we can double up on the free balls. Treasurer Worley then reported that the current balance of the Club’s funds is $2,783.22.

Secretary’s Report: Secretary Chuck Johnson had nothing to report.COMMITTEE REPORTS:Mixed Tournaments: Allan Lindberg reported that the income/cost of

the Mixed Tournaments thus far is evenly balanced. The highest cost for the refreshments in the breeze way is beer. He also reported that all sponsors have paid their sponsor fee of $800 with the exception of Woodburn Hearing.

OGA: Paul Eaton reminded the members of special offerings on the OGA website for play at various golf courses. Currently Ocean Dunes is offering a special package. Paul stated that there is still a light out in the tunnel leading to the eleventh hole. He was told that ODOT has been notified. Paul also stated that some golfers had expressed that they would prefer to only play in the Mixed Tournaments without paying for the dinner. He had heard complaints about the quality of the food at our last Mixed Tournament dinner. He was informed that the $16 entry fee must include both golf and dinner for all participants and cannot be separated. Paul then began a discussion on the Horse Race Tournaments, stating that he would favor 2 flights when there are at least 18-19 teams involved. The Tournament Committee will consider 2 flights in the future when the number of teams warrant two flights. Paul also stated that he preferred that no teams be eliminated on the first hole of the Horse Race, an opinion that was not shared by the majority of members present.

Handicap: Clint Hansen discussed the need to carefully review score cards before signing and turning in the cards. Mistakes can lead to disqualification. Clint then reported that pairings for the Match Play Tournament have been made with tee times on July 9th beginning at 7 a.m. through 8:53 a.m. Clint

Men’s Golf General Meeting

also reported that Allan Lindberg has agreed to be Clint’s backup for handicap work during the fall and winter as Clint is a “snowbird”.

Sunshine: Bob Price reported that he sent out two cards last month – one to Don Briskey for back surgery and to Bob LaVere. It was reported that Pete White had just had a knee replacement and Bob will be sending Pete a card.

Membership: Stan Hiller reported that he had made 248 bag tags thus far, compared with 254 at this time last year. As Director of Marketing on the Association Board, Stan reported that our ads placed in the Woodburn Independent would be showing the cost to become an Associate Golf Member at our golf course and also to publicize the upcoming End of Watch Golf Tournament.

Unfinished Business: Nothing to report.New Business: Allan Lindberg initiated a discussion on payouts for winners

in our Club Play. In that very few golfers can actually compete for low gross, Allan suggest that low gross payouts either be eliminated or reduced according to those golfers who could actually compete for said prize. He reiterated that we are basically a “net score golf club”. During the discussion that ensued, it was generally agreed that low gross should either be reduced or paid to only the overall low gross score winner, dependant on the format of play for a given day. President Bourne was adamant that low gross should not be totally eliminated. Allan then initiated a discussion on the Calcutta betting involved with the Harvest Invitational Tournament. For the past few years, the betting has been limited to teams actually playing in the tournament, reducing the amount of money involved in the Calcutta betting. Discussion of this issue by the members followed with a motion being made by Allan that the Calcutta betting at the Harvest Invitational Tournament be opened to all comers, motion seconded by President Bourne, and the members voted unanimously to approve the motion.

Closing Comments: Larry Kemper inquired as to whether we could avoid “stacking” teams in Mixed Play Tournaments. He felt it unfair to have only low handicap golfers on a given team. Clint Hansen reported that he liked having formats where all golfers had to be involved rather than simply ride around the course, play a few shots, and putt. President Bourne stated that he rarely attempts to “stack” a team, but in some formats “stacking” can create completion in the low handicap flights. Allan Lindberg stated that he enjoyed the Modified Alternate Shot format used in the Memorial Day Mixed Tournament as it forced the two person teams to strategize when each person’s nine drives would be used. Clint Hansen concluded the closing comments by stating that the Club Championship should be the only gross score tournament and he also stated he wanted to thank the employees of the Pro Shop for the work they do.

Closing: President Bourne moved that our meeting be adjourned, motion seconded, approved, and the meeting was adjourned at 11 a.m.

July 16, 2015Coffee Hour Talent Show

Dee Hinman Pete Petroski

Kathy Hiller

by Kathy Hiller The fi rst of two talent shows at Coffee Hour had six performances. First up was

Dee Hinman who read an old Ann Landers’ column about “A Dog Named Sex”; it brought lots of laughs and chuckles. Then Chris Lang and Doris Kruse entertained us with fi ddle playing and keyboard. Chris invited us to sing along if we knew the words, and many of us did. Pete Petroski played several numbers from October Fests on an old squeeze box, sprinkling in comments along the way. His wife, Jan, had to help him into the straps on the old accordion. Kathy Hiller was next and read a story about “The Pee Little Thrigs”, and yes, it was much like the regular story but the fi rst parts of many of the words were switched around. She read the story slowly, but even she didn’t understand some of the words. When she fi nished, Doris Kruse asked her if she had practiced much, to which Kathy replied, “Not enough!” Ken Carr followed with several funny stories and jokes. Last but not least, was Ed & Ginger Yates singing and Doris Kruse accompanying them with her keyboard. By the time everyone reads this, we’ll have had the second part of the talent show on July 23, so I hope you got to see it in person.

Summer Travel with Seniors

by Ty Burlingham, Owner Right at Home Summers are often the ideal time for family caregivers to take their senior

loved ones on vacation, to reunions or on group outings with family and friends. Travel can be physically and emotionally stressful at any age, so planning ahead will help ensure older adults stay safe and comfortable on the trip.

Many seniors eagerly look forward to summer traveling, but also can feel overwhelmed and nervous about getting to their destination and enjoying their stay. With a few pre-trip action steps, older adults can relax and enjoy their time away without incident.

We recommend the following summer travel tips to assist senior adults when driving, fl ying, taking a train or riding a bus.

• About a month before traveling, be sure the senior consults with his/her doctor to discuss any special health needs, refi ll prescriptions to last through

the trip and update any necessary vaccinations. If the older adult has a chronic medical condition, ask the doctor to write an overview of the loved one’s medical history and provide medication instructions in case of emergency treatment away from home.

• Know your elderly loved one’s physical limitations. Make sure the senior gets plenty of rest before and during travel. In the excitement of the journey, it’s easy to overdo and pack in too many activities each day. Take frequent breaks.

• Make use of travel resources. When purchasing tickets or detailing an itinerary for the trip, plan ahead for accommodations and any dietary, mobility or medical needs. Even if your older loved one does not usually require mobility assistance, walking longer distances in airports or train or bus terminals can quickly exhaust seniors. Also, check whether restrooms are easily accessible and consider aisle seats for easier maneuverability. Contact airlines, rental car companies and hotels about your senior’s special needs and allowing assistive medical equipment including oxygen tanks.

• Pack for the worst-case scenario. Keep all of the senior’s prescription medications with you at all times. It may be tempting to carry only the pills your loved one will need for traveling to your destination and to store the rest in a checked bag, but travel delays or scheduling issues are common.

• Ensure the senior carries essentials. During the journey to your destination and when traveling about each day, be sure the older adult keeps a bag with the following handy: water bottle, medications, snacks, sunglasses, sunscreen, sweater/jacket and proper identifi cation.

• Verify phone numbers with relatives and friends, and update emergency contact information in your cellphone, in case you need to reach relatives.

• Dress for comfort. In warmer weather, be sure the senior wears lightweight clothing in light colors to reduce overheating. Loose, comfortable clothing is best for traveling seniors to help with optimal circulation. If the elderly loved one is at risk for blood clots when sitting for long periods, ask if his/her doctor recommends wearing compression stockings while traveling.

• Avoid direct sun and too much heat. Seniors are particularly vulnerable to heat stroke and heat exhaustion. Be sure your older loved one stays hydrated and wears sunscreen and a hat.

• Prevent picking up germs and illnesses. Wash your hands frequently and carry a hand sanitizer. Staying in a hotel and frequenting public places leave the entire family susceptible to exposure to extra germs and sickness. Skip traveling overseas to regions suffering an outbreak of contagious disease.

• Consider travel health insurance. If your senior is traveling abroad, make sure you understand what your loved one’s health insurance does and does not cover. Medicare and many health plans do not pay for health services received outside the United States. For older adults traveling abroad, consider getting travel health insurance to cover emergency medical and dental services or medical evacuation.

• Visit tourist sites, public places and restaurants during non-peak times. Crowded, noisy surroundings can be diffi cult for seniors’ hearing and mobility.

• Let travel apps guide you. The plethora of travel apps for smartphones can point out directions, keep track of trip expenses, and provide weather information and much more.

When planning a trip, include your loved one in the planning from the beginning so he/she can communicate personal needs and travel interests and feels included. If your senior may need more assistance than you will be able to provide, consider hiring a caregiver to travel with you. Senior care companies like Right at Home www.rah-midvalley.com can offer senior care travel services.

by Don Hofstetter

Here is a story that might pique the interest of people who have lived here for years. I believe it is circa 2003. At that time, I was the team leader

and funding the Relay for Life from the Estates. Our goal was $1200. We did not have enough to meet our goal, so a last ditch effort was for me to pass my cowboy hat at Coffee Hour. I promised everyone that if we raised the last $300, I would dye my hair green.

I passed my hat and we went over the top! A week later, as I sat on the stage, Mabel Kewley dyed my hair. The dye was furnished by Dianna Hyder and it was supposed to be temporary. However, I think she set me up and I had green hair for at least a month.

At that time, the Relay was held at the Woodburn High School athletic fi eld and many of us camped all night in tents. Fond memories indeed!
