Getting To Know You

Last month the members of Indep Drop In Centre were invited for aguided tour around Ormskirk Police Station. The local PoliceOfficers have been visiting our Drop In on a weekly basis for severalmonths now and most of our members are on first name terms withthe officers.Everyone found the guided tour very interesting and enjoyable. Onarrival, the reception procedure was explained to us and MatthewHodge went behind the desk pretending to be the duty officer, whichhe thoroughly enjoyed. The visit to the cells was a bit scaryparticularly when we were locked in for a few minutes. We next had the chance to try on all the different uniforms andequipment that the officers sometimes use such as riot shields, hats, protective jackets and truncheons. Much laughter resulted when thedifferent uniforms and hats were tried on and some people lookedvery much the part!We then went outside to see Owen the dog handler and two dogs onecalled Narvic, who is a German Shepard and Flash who is a SpringerSpaniel. Owen told us about how Narvic had come from Germanyand Owen had to learn to speak the commands in German becauseNarvic only knew German, but Narvic eventually learnt thecommands when said in English. Then we sat inside the police car, in this case a Land Rover and wewere told how other vehicles can be stopped using a ‘stinger’, adevice which deflates a vehicle tyres if it tries to escape. We wherealso shown the vehicle that deals with the road traffic accidents andall signs that the police may need to use such as STOP POLICE.Sue and Simon both had a try at breathing into the breathalyser andthankfully passed the test. Two of our members were really nervous about visiting the policestation and found it difficult when they first arrived. After a bit ofreassurance they went inside and by the end of the tour they enjoyedthemselves every bit as much as we did.
