Our annual tournament generated funds predominantly for our EWISP and ASIST scholarships, as well as our general operating account. We are forever grateful that Hurricane Hilda weakened to a storm and did not affect our tournament!. We have reached the end of the 2014-2015 chapter year, and it’s been an amazing journey. Each of you has made significant contributions throughout the year and helped to make our organization stronger as we continued to focus on the 3C’s – Connections, Careers and Community. To the members of EWI of Honolulu . . . Thank you! Mahalo for your participation this year in our monthly meetings, corporate webinars, pau hana mixers, book club gatherings, our 20 th annual golf tournament, philanthropy projects, and lunch bunches. We continued to strengthen our own connections and our community. At the start of the year, I chose the word excite as the focus for EWI of Honolulu. From Merriam Webster, the word excite is defined as, to call to activity, to raise to a higher level, to cause feelings of enthusiasm and to make someone feel energetic. Throughout the year, I challenged all of you to participate in the monthly corporate webinars, have a one-on-one with another EWI member, send in your suggestions to help improve our chapter, share your New Year’s resolutions, promote your member firm, and volunteer for a philanthropy project. All of this was to encourage you to do more, to challenge yourself, and to help you grow as an individual. Your personal development is a key component to your success in your career and in EWI. But, wait, we’re not done yet. We still have a few more events to get excited about. . . Please join us at the Installation Dinner on Wednesday, September 9, Sheraton Waikiki – 5:30 p.m. as we congratulate President-elect, Maegan Brandt and her board of directors. This will be a business meeting and quorum will be required as we approve the 2015-2016 budget. Maegan Brandt, Jocelyn Palafox (Na Wahine Alakai Scholarship Winner) and Brenda Kanno (Parliamentarian) and myself will be traveling to Tulsa, Oklahoma for the Leadership Conference and Annual Meeting (LCAM), September 23-27, 2015. We’ll have an opportunity to connect and share ideas with other chapter members and have a little fun learning how to line dance too! If you haven’t had an opportunity to volunteer for a philanthropy project this year, you have another chance. Please join Wendy Kia (Philanthropy Chair) and her committee on Saturday, October 31 , at the Honolulu Zoo for our annual Reading Rally. Please contact Wendy to volunteer and wear a Halloween costume to the event. Look forward to seeing all of you there! Letter from the PresidentAloha EWI of Honolulu! 2015 is just marching along….moving forward now to April! We still have a lot in store for the rest of the year and look forward to your enthusiasm and participation.

Get excited and mark your calendars! • April 8, 2015 – Meet guest speaker, Vanna Novak of Speak to Persuade at our April dinner meeting

at member firm, Plaza Club. Thank you to Past President Gwen Fujie for her help in securing Vanna to speak to us.

• April 11, 2015 – Bingo at Pearl City Nursing Home! Reach out to Philanthropy Director, Wendy Kia (Marie Louise Fine Garment Cleaners) and volunteer! This is always a fun event! Prizes for the seniors are needed. Please bring these to the April 8th membership meeting.

• May 13, 2015 – We are giving out $15,000 in EWISP Scholarship Awards! Meet these outstanding high school seniors and their families! Support Jennifer Ihara (Level 3 Communications) and her committee.

• June 10, 2015 – EWI Executives Night – Invite your executive and be present for our first annual membership awards. An outstanding member firm and member representative will be honored. A special menu is being prepared by member firm, Plaza Club for this event.

• July 15, 2015 – ALERT! New Date! This will be the date of our ASIST Dinner meeting. (3rd Wednesday of July) Meet the adult students and their families as we all celebrate at member firm, Hawaii Convention Center, for dinner and awards. Another $15,000 in scholarships will be awarded to deserving students. Support Wanda Sanchez (Bank of Hawaii) and her committee at this scholarship dinner.

Attending our monthly meetings or philanthropic events is definitely one way to network with your fellow members. Remember that EWI is built on the 3Cs – Connections, Careers, and Community. Monthly meetings are a way to connect and also enhance your own personal development. In February, Craig Chong of Fresh Leadership focused on executive coaching and how we all can benefit by coaching others or being coached. In March, Jan Kaeo of Dale Carnegie Training spoke to us on the attitudes for service. She reminded us of the important principles of attitude control. Some of my favorite principles: “Don’t fuss about trifles. Create happiness for others. Expect ingratitude.” We were also so happy to have Past President Eleanor Urakawa in attendance. Eleanor and Jan previously worked at the same company and that’s actually how Jan learned of EWI of Honolulu about 20 years ago. If you have not attended a dinner meeting in a while, you could be missing out on a great opportunity to connect and enhance your career! Back in February, I encouraged all of you to reach out to another EWI member for a one-on-one. Did you have a chance to complete a one-on-one? Karen Garcia (Hawaiian Electric) and Nadine Uratsuka (Accuity) were the first to respond. They chatted over coffee and discussed the upcoming golf tournament and caring for their families and their aging parents. Please continue to have these one-on-one discussions. You’ll be surprised by what you learn.

Your next Connect Challenge will be to focus on the second of the 3 Cs – Careers. Did you know that one of your membership benefits in EWI is a monthly corporate webinar? Attend the April webinar (Tuesday, April 7th, 9:00 a.m. HST – Servant Leadership: A Business Management Strategy) and email me your takeaways from the webinar. Log onto the corporate website (www.ewiconnect.com) to register. (Refer to the webinar flyer in the Connect.) These webinars are free of charge to you and anyone within your member firm. Take advantage of it!

Warmest aloha,

Cora KimPresidentEWI of Honolulu 2014-2015

After graduation, Ashleigh moved to Hawaii to join her husband, Tommy, who is an active duty Marine. Ashleigh first met Roseann Freitas from Archipelago Hawaii through member, Abigail Jacinto of Accountemps. Through that connection and attending various EWI dinner meetings as a guest, Ashleigh felt a part of EWI. That’s when she knew EWI was a great organization that she wanted to be involved in. Ashleigh’s main responsibilities at Archipelago Hawaii include managing accounts payable and accounts receivable invoices, data-entry of client transactions, reconciling accounts, and billing. Roseann and Ashleigh collaborate together to manage and improve cash flow. In addition to accounting, she works alongside their designers to review plans and pricing to prepare for client meetings. Ashleigh never thought that she would work in the design industry, but has found that it is truly a blessing to be working with such an energetic and creative team! Ashleigh and her husband Tommy try to take advantage of all the adventures Hawaii has to offer. You can spot them almost every weekend relaxing at Lanikai beach. They also enjoy exploring different trails and eating at new restaurants. But above all else, they love spending time with their loveable and rambunctious German Shepherd, Kai.
