Snapback hats are a type of baseball cap and its name was derived from the plastic strip around the back which has an adjustable sizing snapping mechanism that allows for a perfect fit no matter who wears them.

Back in the day, as an advertising gimmick, snapback hats were a smash hit during the 80s and were mainly used for that purpose. Sports teams were quick to jump on the bandwagon to take advantage of America's love for baseball caps which could be quickly and cheaply manufactured for fans of all ages and all sizes.

But somewhere during the late 90s the comfortable and affordable hats became "old-school" and the cache began to slip.

Snapback hats became a thing of the past for advertising; while a few hits would appear throughout those years the hat style was dying a slow death and becoming a distant memory.

Even Will Smith was becoming up to date and was no longer the "Prince" of old school; he had transformed into the "Man in Black." And that man didn't wear a colorful baseball cap.

After the late 90s lull snapback hats are back in fashion. Travis Barker of Blink-182 has one almost glued to his head at all times. Lil Bow Wow, Chris Brown, Jay Z, Ice Cubs Sons and yes, even that back in the day icon, Will Smith, all wear their snapback hats proudly and frequently.


But then they made a comeback!


Fashion doesn’t make celebrities, celebrities make fashion. So the famous ones have spoken! And snapback hats are here to stay!
