Before writing the arguments of Eid Milad-un-Nabi (Allah's Grace & Peace be upon Him), I want to clear the meaning of Milad according to literature and shariah. The word Milad has been derived from "viladut" which means birth. Therefore, according to Arabic language, milad is word which signifies the place and time of birth. In the light of shariah, we means, Milad is to remember the events which took place at the birth time of the Holy Prophet (Allah's Grace & Peace be upon Him) and we get the opportunity of narrating the seerat of the Prophet (Allah's Grace & Peace be upon Him) on this occasio n, we also presents the Holy Prophe t (Allah's Grace & Peace be upon Him) gifts of durood -o- salam. Question :

Please give me the evidence about Eid-e-Milad-un-Nabi in the light of Quran & Ahadith

Ans.Before writing the arguments of Eid Milad-un-Nabi (Allah's Grace &Peace be upon Him), I want to clear the meaning of Milad according toliterature and shariah.

The word Milad has been derived from "viladut" which means birth. Therefore, according to Arabic language, milad is word which signifiesthe place and time of birth. In the light of shariah, we means, Milad is toremember the events which took place at the birth time of the HolyProphet (Allah's Grace & Peace be upon Him) and we get the opportunityof narrating the seerat of the Prophet (Allah's Grace & Peace be uponHim) on this occasion, we also presents the Holy Prophet (Allah's Grace& Peace be upon Him) gifts of durood -o- salam. We mention before the

people attributes and praises of the Prophet (Allah's Grace & Peace beupon Him). We do not believe that Milad is specified with same night

but, we believe that the remembrance of the Holy Prophet (Allah's Grace& Peace be upon Him) is incumbent in each minute and second of timeand every Muslim should act it sunnahs in the whole life time. Milad un

Nabi (Allah's Grace & Peace be upon Him) is a great source of preaching. It is incumbent for scholars to teach Muslims nations on this Holyoccasion, moral behavior of the Holy Prophet, (Allah's Grace & Peace beupon Him) his antiquates, His affairs, His serat, His dealings and Hisworships.

Now I write the proofs of Milad from the Holy Quran, the hadith of the

Prophet (Allah's Grace & Peace be upon Him) and consensus of Ulmas.

Evidence of the Holy QuranThe Quranic verses prove that to celebrate Milad is not only a proper deed but it is also a praiseworthy.

1) Allah Almighty says in Quran:

"The peace is on Him the day when he was born and the day when he will

die and the day when he will be raised alive." (Kanzul Iman the

translation of Holy Quran, Sura Al-Maryam, Verse 15)

In the above verse Allah Almighty has mentioned the complete Milad of Hazrat Yahya (Alhis Salam). And before this Allah Almighty has

mentioned the events which took place before the birth. It is the sameway of celebrating birth day as ahle sunnat adopts for the Milad of thelast Prophet (Allah's Grace & Peace be upon Him) of Allah Almighty. Inother words the Prophet of Allah Almighty Hazrat Isa (Alahis Salam)celebrate his own milad.

2) As Allah Almighty says:

"And the same peace on me the day I was born and the day I will die and

the day I would raised alive."(Kanzul Iman the translation of Holy Quran, Sura Al Maryum , Verse 33)

Before this verse Allah Almighty has stated the whole story of Maryum(Allah may pleased with him) that who she got pregnant and gave birthher great son, the Prophet of Allah Isa (Alihis Salam). Allah Almightyalso mentioned the words of Isa (Alaihis Salam) by which Isa (AlaihisSalam) praised himself. This style of narrating story is nothing butcelebration of Milad of Isa Alaihis Salam. Ahle Sunnat also narrate thestory of Holy Prophet Muhammad (Allah's Grace & Peace be upon Him)in the same style. We too narrate the events which took place before the

birth and after it as Allah Almighty narrated about Yahya and Isa(Alaihimus Salam). Therefore, a person who has eyes of justice, willobviously accept that to celebrate Milad is an important deed which AllahAlmighty has done. So it proves that the bases of Milad is found in theHoly Quran.

3) Allah Almighty says:

"And remind them of the days of the Allah."(Kanzul Iman the translation of Holy Quran, Sura Ibrahim, Verse5)

In this verse Allah Almighty orders his prophet Musa Alahis Salam toremind his nation the days of Allah Almighty. "The days of Allah" arethose days in which great events took place or Allah Almighty bestowedhis great rewards to his creature. As the Holy Quran testifies thisexplanation of the days of Allah Almighty. In the Holy Quran Musa

Alaihis Salam says:

Page 3: Evidence of Milaad

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/evidence-of-milaad 3/23

"And when Musa said it his people remember Allah's favor upon you, when he delivered you from Firawn's people who used to afflict youworsly, and slaughter your sons and let your daughters live and in it there

was shown great mercy of your lord." (Kanzul Iman the translation of Holy Quran, Sura Ibrahim , Verse 6 )

According to the Quranic verse emancipation of the nation of MusaAlaihis Salam from Firawn is a day of Allah, so the birth day of the HolyProphet Muhammad (Allah's Grace & Peace be upon Him) is, with anydoubt, also a day of Allah, because the Prophet Muhammad (Allah'sGrace & Peace be upon Him) emancipated whole world from thedarkness of ignorance and brought them to the light of guidance.

Therefore, the birthday (Milad) of the Holy Prophet (Allah's Grace &Peace be upon Him) deserves to be celebrated then the celebration of anyother event. In case we would not be grateful to Allah Almighty for hisfavor, that is Muhammad (Allah's Grace & Peace be upon Him). He will

punish us severely . As Allah Almighty says :

"And remember when your lord proclaimed, if you will be great full thenI shall give you more and if your thankless then my treatment is severe."(Kanzul Iman the translation of Holy Quran, Sura Ibrahim , Verse 7 )

4) Allah Almighty says :"Then remember the bounties of Allah and wander not in the earthspreading mischief."(Kanzul Iman the translation of Holy Quran, Sura Araf , Verse 74 )

In the above verse Allah Almighty orders us to remember his bountiesand rewards. The last Prophet of Allah Almighty Muhammad (Allah'sGrace & Peace be upon Him) is, undoubtedly, great blessing of AllahAlmighty for whole mankind. Allah Almighty himself considers theProphet (Allah's Grace and Peace be upon him) his great favor for mankind as He says

"Undoubtedly, Allah did a great favor to the Muslims that in them fromamong themselves sent a messenger who recites unto them His signs and

purifies them and teaches them the book and wisdom and necessarily before that they were certainly apparent error.(Kanzul Iman the translation of Holy Quran, Sura Ale Imran , Verse 164)

Therefor, according to the Quranic commandments we must remember

Page 4: Evidence of Milaad

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/evidence-of-milaad 4/23

the beloved Prophet of Allah Muhammad (Allah's Grace & Peace beupon Him) and Milad-un-Nabi is a best way of remembrance of thegreatest Prophet (Allahs Grace and Peace be upon him).In another words Allah Almighty says:

"And publicize well the favor of your lord"(Kanzul Iman the translation of Holy Quran, Sura Al Duha , Verse 11)

The companion of the Holy Prophet (Allahs Grace and Peace be uponhim) Hazrat Abdullah Ibne Abbas (Allah is well pleased with Him )explained the word favors. He says here, In this verse favor signifies the

prophet hood and Islam.(Tafseer Ibne Abbas, Sure Al Duha, Page 651).

So in the light of the given explanation by the cousin of the Holy Prophet(Allah's Grace and Peace be upon him), we can say that Allah Almightyorders us to remember Holy Prophet (Allah's Grace and Peace be uponhim) in our gatherings between the people, in our mosque between theworshiper and in our houses between our families and Milad un Nabi(Allahs Grace and Peace be upon him), as I have written is a best way for this quranic purpose.

4) Allah Almighty orders us :"Say you oly Allah's grace and his mercy, on it therefore let them rejoice. That is better then all their wealth."

In this verse Allah Almighty orders us to enjoy on his grace and mercy. If we see around us we find that each favor of Allah Almighty is greatmercy for us. Even our existence is also a mercy of Allah Almighty. Butthe greatest of Allah is the Holy Prophet (Allah's Grace and Peace beupon him). As Allah Almighty says:

"And we sent not you but mercy for all world."(Kanzul Iman the translation of Holy Quran, Sura Al Ambia , Verse 107)

So according the Quranic teachings it is necessary for us that ewe must behappy and pleased on the birthday of the Holy Prophet (Allah's Grace andPeace be upon him). The one who pleases with the Holy Prophet (Allah'sGrace and Peace be upon him) is really a true follower of the Quran. Andit is obvious that, in whole world Muslims celebrates Milad un Nabi(Allah's Grace and Peace be upon him). Specially for enjoying the mercy

of Allah Almighty that is the beloved prophet of Allah Almighty (Allah's

Page 5: Evidence of Milaad

Grace and Peace be upon him)Therefore the Holy Quran itself confirmsthe Milad un Nabi (Allah's Grace and Peace be upon him)

5) The gathering of Milad un Nabi (Allah's Grace and Peace be upon

him) incite Muslims on saying durood and Salam ( to pray for prophet(Allah's Grace and Peace be upon him) of blessing and peace) AllahAlmighty says:

"Oh you who I believe send upon Him blessing and salute Him fully wellin abundance. (Kanzul Iman the translation of Holy Quran, Sura AlAhzab , Verse 56)

According to the law of shariah, a thing which is desired by shariah, is

exactly a like an aim of shariah. And the benifit of durood -o- salam areso much in numbers that can not be counted. Durood -o- salam causes for the help of Allah Almighty in this world and here after. So milad un Nabi(Allah's Grace & Peace be upon Him) is a source of fulfilling thecommandments of Allah Almighty

6) Allah Almighty says:

"And all that we narrate to you of the tidings of the messengers is for the purpose of strengthening your heart therewith." (Kanzul Iman thetranslation of Holy Quran, Sura Hood, Verse 121)

This Quranic verse reveals that the wisdom of mentioning the stories andevents of Prophets (Alaihis salam) was to stand fast the heart of the last

prophet (Allah's Grace and Peace be upon him). And it is obvious that weare, also today, in need of being stand fast. We must know that how, the

prophet of Allah (Allah's Grace and Peace be upon him) faced the problems of his time so that we may face the problems of our timesaccording to the Sunnah. Therefore Milad un Nabi (Allah's Grace andPeace be upon him) provides us an opportunity to know about the affair of the Prophet (Allah's Grace and Peace be upon him).

Evidence of Hadith (Narrations of the Holy Prophet (Allah's Graceand Peace be upon him)

There are many narrations, which proves the Milad sharif but I write afew.

1) The Prophet of Allah (Allahs Grace and Peace be upon him) himself

Page 6: Evidence of Milaad

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/evidence-of-milaad 6/23

stated his own birth from very beginning He says: "I had been transferred, continuously, from purified offspring to purified wombs. I had beengiven birth by a lawful marriage not by adultery. When Allah Almightysent Adam Alaihis Salam on earth so He put me in his spine and then

transferred in Nuh Alaihs salam in his boat, and then in Ibrahim Alaihissalam Allah Alighty transfered me continuesly from nobel offsprings tothe purified wombs up to that He brought me in my parents who never committed adultery."(Tafseer Ruhul biyan, Vol. 3, Page 54)

As I have written in the beginning that Milad means the time of birth or place of birth. So the Holy Prophet (Allah's Grace and Peace be uponhim) himself celebrated his own Milad. In the same way ahle sunnat

following the Holy Prophet (Allah's Grace and Peace be upon him)narratethe events of the birth of the Holy Prophet (Allah's Grace and Peace beupon him) .This hadith is the clear proof Milad un Nabi (Allahs Graceand Peace be upon him) and as well as tell us that to celebrate Milad un

Nabi (Allah's Grace and Peace be upon him) is not innovation (bidat) butit is a sunnah (tradition) of Prophet (Allahs Grace and Peace be uponhim). There are many other narrations which narrate that the Prophet of Allah(Allah's Grace and Peace be upon him) celebrate his own Milad severaltimes, some of those narrations have been written in mishkat sharif.

2) "The one who rejoices on the birth day of the Holy Prophet would not be severely punished and it is hopped that a Muslim who celebrate theMilad un Nabi (Allah's Grace and Peace be upon him), will not be

punished in hell. Imam Bukhari Rahmatullah Alaih narrates that AbuLahab would be punished lightly in the hell on Monday. Because herejoiced and freed his handmaid indicating by his finger, when theProphet of Allah Almighty (Allah's Grace and Peace be upon him) took

birth. So as a reward of happiness on milad un Nabi (Allah's Grace andPeace be upon him) he would be given water by his finger. (SaheehulBukhari Vol. 2, Page 764)

Imam shams ud din Naseer Al Damaishqi narrates this hadith in poetry. Here is its translation.

If such kafir was denounced (in the Quran)And perished are his hands, and in the flame is his eternal abode. It is narrated every Monday.

His torment is made easy for his joy at the birth of Ahmad. (Allah's Grace

and Peace be upon him)What is the expectation then of a servant who spent all his life.Happy with the arrival of Ahmad (Allah's Grace and Peace be upon him)and died on the one ness of Allah Almighty. (Haul-ul-Ahtifal Bil Maullid

Al-Nabvi Al Sharif, Page 11)

2) The Holy Prophet Muhammad (Allah's Grace and Peace be upon him)celebrated his own Milad by having fast. Imam Wali ud din write thisnarration with reference to the Sahee Muslim. When the Prophet of Allah(Allah's Grace and Peace be upon him) was asked about the fast of Monday. He (Allah's Grace and Peace be upon him) said:

"I took birth and the quran was revealed upon me in this day."

(Mishkat Sharif, Page 179)This narration proves that to celebrate Milad un Nabi is a tradition of theHoly Prophet (Allahs Grace and Peace be upon him) on every Monday.Secondly it is lawful to fix a particular day for Milad un Nabi (Allah'sGrace and Peace be upon him). Thirdly it is an act of sunnah to worshipin the pleasure of the Milad un Nabi (Allah's Grace and Peace be uponhim)

Evidence of general consensus of Muslim ummah and scholars(Ulma)

1) Imam Al-Hafiz Al-Suyuti in his famous book "Al-Hawii Lil-Fatawii"allocated a special chapter on that topic and named it "The Excellence of Objective in Celebrating the Mawlid" where he said: The question under consideration is what the verdict of the Shari'ah on celebrating the HolyBirthday of the Noble Prophet (Allah's Grace & Peace be upon Him)during the month of Rabbi-ul-Awwal. From the point of view of Shari'ahis this a praiseworthy action or a blameworthy one? And do those whoarrange such celebration Receive blessings or not? He said:

"The reply to this question is that in my view the Meelad Shareef (Celebration of the Birthday of the Noble Prophet Allah's Grace & Peace

be upon Him) is in fact such an occasion of happiness on which peopleassemble and recite the Holy Qu'ran to the extent that is easy. Then theyrelate the prophecies concerning the appearance of the Noble Prophet(Allah's Grace & Peace be upon Him) that have been transmitted inAhadith and Author, and the miraculous events and signs that took place

on his birth. Then food is set before them and according to their desire

Page 8: Evidence of Milaad

they partake thereof to satisfaction. This festival of celebrating the birthday of the Noble Prophet (Allah's Grace & Peace be upon Him) is aBid'ah Hasanah (good Innovation) and those arranging it will get

blessing, since in such a celebration is found the expression of joy and

happiness at the greatness and eminence of the Noble Prophet (Allah'sGrace & Peace be upon Him) and his birth".

Even Ibn Tay'miah said in his book "Necessity of the Right Path", p. 266,5th line from the bottom of that page, published by Dar Al-Hadith, thefollowing:

"As far as what people do during the Meelad, either as a rival celebrationto that which the Christian do during the time of Christ's birthday or as an

expression of their love and admiration and a sign of praise for the NobleProphet (Allah's Grace & Peace be upon Him), Allah Almighty willsurely reward them for such Ij'tiha". He then said: "Although Meelad wasnot practiced by (Salaf), they should have done so since there was noobjection against it from the Shari'ah point of view".And we certainly only celebrate Meelad out of love and admiration to theProphet of all Mankind.

2. Imam Al-Hafiz Al-Qastalani, who gave commentary on Sahih Bukhari, said: "May Allah Almighty shower his Mercy upon a person who takesthe days of the month of Rabbi-ul-Awwal, in which the Noble Prophet(Allah's Grace & Peace be upon Him) was born, as days of feast andcelebration for doing so is the best cure for the heart of an ailing person."

3. Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar was asked, same reference of Imam Suyuti, aboutMeelad Shareef. His reply was:

"Meelad Shareef is, in fact, and innovation, which was not transmittedfrom any pious predecessor in the first three centuries. Nevertheless, bothacts of virtue as well as acts of abomination are found in it (i.e.Sometimes acts of virtue are found therein and sometimes acts of abomination). If in the Meelad Shareef only acts of virtue are done andacts of abomination are abstained from, then the Meelad Shareef is aBid'ah Hasanah (good innovation), otherwise not."He then added ""To do any virtuous act and to observe it annually as means of recollection for any special day on which Allah Almighty has bestowedany favor or removed any calamity is a form of showing gratitude to

Allah Almighty. Gratitude to Allah Almighty is expressed through

different kinds of Ibaadah (worship) -prostration and standing in prayer, charity and recitation of the Holy Qu'ran. And what is a greater favor from Allah Almighty can there be than the appearance of the Prophet of Mercy (Allah's Grace & Peace be upon Him) on this day (i.e. 12th of

Rabbi-ul-Awwal)?" Some people do not limit it and celebrate the MeeladShareef on any day of Rabbi-ul-Awwal. Nay, some people have extendedit even more and increased the period to the whole year. According to thelatter, the Meelad Shareef can be celebrated on any day of the year. Theobjective here is the same, i.e. to rejoice at and celebrate the Holy Birthof the Noble Prophet (Allah's Grace & Peace be upon Him).

4. Imam Abu-Bakr Abdullah Al-Demashqi compiled a number of bookson the subject and called them "Collection of Traditions on the Birth of

the Chosen Prophet", "The Pure Expression on the Birthday of the Best of Creations" and "The Spring for the Thirsty One on the Birth of theRightly Guided".

5. Imam Al-Hafiz Al-Iraqi wrote a book and called it "The Pure Springon the Sublime Birth".

6. Imam Ibn Dahyah wrote a book and called it "Enlightenment on theBirthday of the Bearer of Good News, The Warner".

7. Imam Mulla Ali Qari wrote a book and called it "The QuenchingSpring on the Birthday of the Prophet".(Allah's Grace & Peace be uponHim)

8. Imam Shams Ul-Din bin Naser Al-Dumashqi, said in his book: "TheSpring for the Thirsty One on the Birth of the Rightly Guided" about thestory of Abu Lahab that he will receive a light punishment every Mondayfor expressing joy at the birth of the Noble Prophet (Allah's Grace &Peace be upon him) on that day. The Imam said the following verse of

poetry, the translation is: If such Kafir was denounced in the (Qur'an) and perished are his hands, and in the Flames is his eternal abode It isnarrated that every Monday. His torment is made easy for his Joy at the Birth of Ahmad What is theexpectation then of a servant who spent all his life Happy with the Arrivalof Ahmad (Allah's Grace & Peace be upon Him)and died on the Onenessof Allah.

9. Imam Shams Ul-Din Ibn aL-Jazri, the Imam of reciters, wrote a book

and named it "The Scent of Notification on the Blessed Birthday".

10. Imam Al-Hafiz Ibn Al-Jawzi, said in the description of Meelad:"Peace and Tranquillity takes over during that year and a good glad tidingto obtain your wish and inspiration".

11. Imam Abu-Shamah, The Sheik of Al Hafiz Al Nawawi, said:

"The best of the innovations of our times is what is carried out on the dayof corresponding to the birthday of our Beloved Prophet (Allah's Grace &Peace be upon Him), where people give out donations, practice what isright, express their joy and happiness, in doing so is surely a sign of loveand admiration for the Prophet (Allah's Grace & Peace be upon him)".

Bibi Aaminah Radiyallahu-Anha saw the gates of Heavenopen. The angels came down for the adoration of the newbaby. Three angels went towards the Kaabah. One angelstayed over the Kaabah, one went to the East and the othertowards the West. A light then spread out lighting up theuniverse. In this miraculous light, Bibi Aaminah Radiyallahu-Anha could see distinctly the palaces of Palestine and Syria.

After the birth of Muhammad (Allah's Grace & Peace beupon him) three angels appeared. One of them took a seal andmarked the right shoulder and handed the child over to themother. When Bibi Aaminah looked upon the face of the child,it was shining like the full moon and perfume of the finestotto(sweet -smelling essence) was coming from the body.

Hazrat Muhammad (Allah's Grace & Peace be upon him)was born without an umbilical (navel) cord, circumcised and hisbody miraculously pure and clean without any kind of blood ordirt on it.

At the time of birth of Muhammad (Allah's Grace & Peacebe upon him) Hazrat Abdul Muttalib, the grandfather of theHoly Prophet (Allah's Grace & Peace be upon him), and someother Meccans were at the Kaabah at this early hour beforedawn. All of a sudden they were surprised to see the walls of the Kaabah bow miraculously before Maqam-e-Ibrahim. AbdulMuttalib hearing the walls of the Kaabah talk and seeing all theidols fall.

There were a number of people at the Kaabah at the timeof the birth of Hazrat Muhammad (Allah's Grace & Peace beupon him), when all the idols fell prostrate. They picked up anderected the fallen idols, but the idols fell down again on theirfaces. They propped them up again but the idols collapsed for athird time. These idols remained prostrate on the floor for a fulltwenty-four hours. No amount of effort to refit themthroughout the world were successful. It was only on the nextday that they were refitted. This was witnessed by thousands ,not only at Mecca but all over the world

A'lahazrat had unflinching faith words of holy prophet (Allah'sGrace and Peace be upon him). He believed "East may be westand west may be east but what the holly prophet (Allah's Graceand Peace be upon him) has said, can never be wrong".Once upon a time, plauge was enaraging throughout bareilly. All of a sudden, A'lahazrat fell ill. He seemed to feel difficulty inspeaking. His thyroid glands jammed. Physicians wereconsulted. Every physician diagnosed that he was sufferingfrom the same epidemic. But A'lahazrat said, "No, I cannotsuffer from plague". Please treat me otherwise on seeingplague patients, he had recite a dua (invocation) for which theholy prophet (Allah's Grace and Peace be upon him) has saidthat whosoever recite this dua after seeing a patient, shallremain safe from such disease. True to my belief, the statmentof holy prophet (Allah's Grace and Peace be upon him) cannever be wrong. Thus, I can naver come under the clutch of plauge. Accordingly, some balck pepper etc. was administered

and to the surprise of the attending physicians, A'lahazrat wasokay. It was a miracle of the holy prophet (Allah's Grace andPeace be upon him) that his follower, who followed him to thefull, recovered to the full.

Similarly, during his first Hajj which he performed along withhis revered mother, his ship came under the grip of a severetyphoon. The panic reached the stage that the pilgrims beganto put on their kafans (shrouds). Like every one else, themother of A'lahazrat was too frightened. In order to console his

restless mother , A'lahzrat said, "O mother! by Allah Almighty, this ship shall not sink." A'lahazrat says that he had taken thisoath relying on a Hadith that whosoever recite suchdua(invocation) while getting in the boat or ship, remains safe.He then concentrated himself towards the Redeemer of Mankind, the holy Prophet (Allah's Grace and Peace be uponhim), with whose kindness the typhoon came to a standstill andthe danger was over. All the dangers and caastrophes can bevanished in no time with the kindness of Holy Prophet (Allah'sGrace and Peace be upon him), provided the standarad of our

faith is such as that of A'lahazrat.

During his second Hajj, A'lahazrat was suffering from fever. Asthe fever subdued, A'lahazrat took his bath and rushed towardsthe Haram Sharif. In the meantime, it began to rain. A'lahazratrecollected a hadith:"Whosoever performs Tawaf amid rains, swims in the bounty of Allah". A'lahazrat kissed the Hajr-i-Aswad ans started theTawaf forthwith, with the result that fever gripped him again. When hazrat Sayyid Ismail Makki, a noted savant of his time, came to know of it, he said to A'lahazrat, "You did not care of you simply for a weak Hadith". Upon this A'lahzrat replied:"Though the Hadith is weak, yet the hope is strong." The heart-touching point is that even a weak Hadith touched the heart of a A'lahazrat to such an extent

A'lahazrat has given us a lesson that the Holy Prophet (Allah'sGrace and Peace be upon him) is certainly a man but such aman that there is no man like him. The opponents of A'lahazratsay that he has denied the man-hood of Holy Prophet (Allah'sGrace and Peace be upon him) altogether. It is wrong andtotally wrong. A'lahazrat has declared in very clear terms thatwhosoever denies the manhood of Holy Prophet (Allah's Graceand Peace be upon him) altogether is Kafir. ("Fatawa-i-Rizawiyya, Part VI").It is funny that everybody calls his beloved matchless. Thenwhy can't we call the Mehboob of Allah, that is, Holy Prophet(Allah's Grace and Peace be upon him) matchless. A'lahazrathimself writes the Holy Prophet (Allah's Grace and Peace beupon him) to be a man but a matchless one.He says as translated: "From top to bottom grace of Allah he is

Like him no man, such a man he is.

Qur'an holds him to be Iman. And Iman says its soul he is."

Allah the most high calss upon the Holy Prophet (Allah's Graceand Peace be upon him) "That is, if you love Allah, follow me;and Allah will love you. The direction is double sided. On theone side, One must follow the Holy Prophet (Allah's Grace andPeace be upon him) if one loves Allah Almighty , while on theother, one must follow the Holy Prophet (Allah's Grace andPeace be upon him) if one wants to be loved by Allah Almighty. In other words, as far as love of Allah Almighty is concerned, the follow-up of Holy Prophet (Allah's Grace and Peace be uponhim) is a pre-requsite. This is what Allah Almighty declares. Now listen to what the Holy Prophet (Allah's Grace and Peacebe upon him) declares: "That is, none of you s Momin(beliver)unless I am dearer to him than his parents, his children and allother persons." All other persons would naturally include allrelatives, friends, authoroties etc. Thus, if we follow the HolyProphet (Allah's Grace and Peace be upon him), we must followthis Hadith, we must love the Holy Prophet (Allah's Grace andPeace be upon him). Love is a wide term. It carries severalaspects. Love me, love my dog, is one of the aspect. To lovethe friend of beloved, is to love the beloved and to hate theenemy of beloved is to love the beloved as well. Thecommander of the faithful, Hazrat Ali (Allah Almighty pleasedwith him) says that there are three categories of enemy, namely, 1) Your enemy 2) Enemy of your friend and 3) friendof your enemy.

A'lahazrat has given us a lesson of love for the Holy Prophet(Allah's Grace and Peace be upon him). It is his teaching of teachings. A'lahazrat is a by word for the Holy Prophet's love(Allah's Grace and Peace be upon him). He loved the love. Thisis why Hazrat Obaidullah Khan Azami calls him "Imam-i-Ishq-o-Muhabbat" (Leader of Love). In the eyes of A'lahazrat, Iman isthe name of love with Holy Prophet (Allah's Grace and Peace beupon him). Love means utter love, that is, love without anydisrespect. According to A'lahazrat, love and disrespect cannotco-exist. A muslim is not a Muslim unless he loves the HolyProphet (Allah's Grace and Peace be upon him) by heart and

mind and mind and heart. The more he loves, the more perfectMuslim he happens to be.

1. Imam Al-Hafiz Al-Suyuti in his famous book "Al-Hawii Lil-Fatawii" allocated a special chapter on that topic and named it"The Excellence of Objective in Celebrating the Mawlid" wherehe said: The question under consideration is what the verdict of the Shari'ah on celebrating the Holy Birthday of the NobleProphet (Allah's Grace & Peace be upon Him) during the monthof Rabbi-ul-Awwal. From the point of view of Shari'ah is this apraiseworthy action or a blameworthy one? And do those whoarrange such celebration receive blessings or not?He said: "The reply to this question is that in my view theMeelad Shareef (Celebration of the Birthday of the NobleProphet Allah's Grace & Peace be upon Him) is in fact such anoccasion of happiness on which people assemble and recite theHoly Qu'ran to the extent that is easy. Then they relate theprophecies concerning the appearance of the Noble Prophet(Allah's Grace & Peace be upon Him) that have beentransmitted in Ahadith and Athar, and the miraculous eventsand signs that took place on his birth. Then food is set beforethem and according to their desire they partake thereof tosatisfaction. This festival of celebrating the birthday of theNoble Prophet (Allah's Grace & Peace be upon Him) is a Bid'ahHasanah (good innovation) and those arranging it will getblessing, since in such a celebration is found the expression of

joy and happiness at the greatness and eminence of the NobleProphet (Allah's Grace & Peace be upon Him) and his birth".Even Ibn Tay'miah said in his book "Necessity of the RightPath", p. 266, 5th line from the bottom of that page, publishedby Dar Al-Hadith, the following: "As far as what people doduring the Meelad, either as a rival celebration to that whichthe Christian do during the time of Christ's birthday or as anexpression of their love and admiration and a sign of praise forthe Noble Prophet (Allah's Grace & Peace be upon Him), AllahAlmighty will surely reward them for such Ij'tiha". He then said:"Although Meelad was not practised by (Salaf), they shouldhave done so since there was no objection against it from the

Shari'ah point of view".

And we certainly only celebrate Meelad out of love andadmiration to the Prophet of all Mankind.

2. Imam Al-Hafiz Al-Qastalani , who gave commentary onSahih Bukhari, said: "May Allah Almighty shower his Mercyupon a person who takes the days of the month of Rabbi-ul-Awwal, in which the Noble Prophet (Allah's Grace & Peace beupon Him) was born, as days of feast and celebration for doingso is the best cure for the heart of an ailing person."

3. Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar was asked, same reference of ImamSuyuti, about Meelad Shareef. His reply was: "Meelad Shareef is, in fact, and innovation, which was not transmitted from anypious predecessor in the first three centuries. Nevertheless, both acts of virtue as well as acts of abomination are found in it(i.e. sometimes acts of virtue are found therein and sometimesacts of abomination). If in the Meelad Shareef only acts of virtue are done and acts of abomination are abstained from, then the Meelad Shareef is a Bid'ah Hasanah (good innovation),otherwise not." He then added "... to do any virtuous act and toobserve it annually as means of recollection for any special dayon which Allah Almighty has bestowed any favour or removedany calamity is a form of showing gratitude to Allah Almighty.Gratitude to Allah Almighty is expressed through different kindsof Ibaadah (worship) -prostration and standing in prayer, charity and recitation of the Holy Qu'ran. And what is a greaterfavour from Allah Almighty can there be than the appearance of the Prophet of Mercy (Allah's Grace & Peace be upon Him) onthis day (i.e. 12th of Rabbi-ul-Awwal)?"Some people do not limit it and celebrate the Meelad Shareef on any day of Rabbi-ul-Awwal. Nay, some people haveextended it even more and increased the period to the wholeyear. According to the latter, the Meelad Shareef can becelebrated on any day of the year. The objective here is the

same, i.e. to rejoice at and celebrate the Holy Birth of theNoble Prophet (Allah's Grace & Peace be upon Him).

4. Imam Abu-Bakr Abdullah Al-Demashqi compiled anumber of books on the subject and called them "Collection of Traditions on the Birth of the Chosen Prophet", "The PureExpression on the Birthday of the Best of Creations" and "TheSpring for the Thirsty One on the Birth of the Rightly Guided".

5. Imam Al-Hafiz Al-Iraqi wrote a book and called it "The

The Imam said the following verse of poetry, thetranslation is:If such Kafir was denounced in the (Qur'an)

And perished are his hands, and in the Flames is his eternal abodeIt is narrated that every Monday His torment is made easy for his Joy at the Birth of Ahmad What is the expectation then of a servant who spent all his lifeHappy with the Arrival of Ahmad (Allah's Grace & Peace be

upon Him)and died on the Oneness of Allah.

11. Imam Abu-Shamah , The Sheik of Al Hafiz Al Nawawi, said: "The best of the innovations of our times is what iscarried out on the day of corresponding to the birthday of ourBeloved Prophet (Allah's Grace & Peace be upon Him), wherepeople give out donations, practice what is right, express their

joy and happiness, in doing so is surely a sign of love andadmiration for the Prophet (Allah's Grace & Peace be uponHim)".
