Dear Zoo Members and Friends –

In reflecting on 2009, we are pleased to report that Cleveland Metroparks Zoo and the Cleveland Zoological Society

once again demonstrated value as a local, regional and international asset. Membership grew, Zoo attendance held

steady, the animal and plant collections flourished, and thousands of under-privileged children experienced the

adventure of a lifetime: discovering wild animals amid beautiful, naturalistic settings.

Zoos are important bridges between animals and people. Thanks to the work of the nation’s leading zoos, public

awareness of the issues facing wildlife is increasing. Through interactive exhibits, interpretive tours and compelling

educational programs, 1.2 million Zoo visitors are brought face-to-face with living animals — encounters that are

catalysts for wildlife advocacy and lifelong learning.

The Zoo is an industry leader in international conservation and research, thanks to the winning combination of an excellent staff

and robust private support. Scientific studies conducted at the Zoo and in the wild are designed to improve the future for wildlife.

This important work also enhances the care of Zoo animals and informs and enriches public programming.

The Zoo Society is committed to advancing the Zoo as a leading civic priority. In 2009, the Zoo Society provided $2.3 million in

support of annual Zoo programs and operations, plus $4 million in cash towards the $25-million African Elephant Crossing as part

of our $12.5-million capital campaign commitment. We also launched a joint strategic planning initiative with the Zoo to align our

core values and begin shaping a bold new vision for the next decade. Thanks to this outstanding public/private partnership, the

citizens of Northeast Ohio can enjoy and take pride in high-quality education programs, outstanding animal care, vital local and

international conservation initiatives and innovative new exhibits.

Your support helps fund the margin of excellence we have all come to expect from the Zoo.

Thank you.

Robert J. Rogers Elizabeth T. FowlerPresident, Board of Trustees Executive Director

Visitors from all walks of life enjoy a beautiful, guest-friendly environment, connect with

animals and participate in informal conservation education programs at the Zoo. Free

Mondays and other free and discounted admission programs account for nearly 25% of

the Zoo’s 1.2 million annual visitors. With admission fees and membership dues below the

national average, a visit to the Zoo is an affordable family outing.

With support from Zoo Society donors, the Zoo provides free field trips, outreach and

interactive distance learning programs to 25,000 of Cuyahoga County’s most needy K-8

school children each year. The only zoo in the country providing its own free ZooBus for

schools unable to afford bus travel, we welcome 17,000 children each year and include

admission, lunch and science education — ALL FREE. Grant-funded scholarships cover

much of the cost. Additional scholarship funding makes it possible for 100 underserved

children to enjoy a free week of Summer Day Camp and 600 foster families to receive free

one-year family memberships.

Spending time in nature is critical for promoting children’s health and encouraging them to

develop an environmental ethic. Because the Zoo may be the first or only “nature experience”

for many city residents, their positive impression of wild animals opens the door to increased

awareness about animal behavior, endangered species and wildlife conservation. These

experiences, shared with other visitors of all ages and diverse backgrounds, make the Zoo a

place where learning, fun and community come together.

Livable cities offer access to education, economic opportunity, recreation and first-class

cultural institutions supported by an engaged citizenry. Great zoos can be primary attractions

for cities, and the Zoo contributes to the draw of Northeast Ohio as a place to live and visit.

Through education and conservation outreach initiatives, the Zoo / Zoo Society builds

community by partnering with Head Start programs, day care centers, social service agencies,

the Cleveland Metropolitan School District, the Cleveland Museum of Natural History, The

Holden Arboretum, Cleveland Botanical Garden, Cleveland Public Art, The Cleveland Museum

of Art, Auburn Career Center, Malone College, Case Western Reserve University, Baldwin-

Wallace College, and The Ohio State University. These collaborations are valuable for

their impact on animal welfare, education and the environment, and for bringing together

organizations with similar threads in their missions.

Whether visiting the Zoo for an hour or a whole day, families and friends enjoy the flexibility

and value of Zoo membership. The Zoo is also a catalyst for community involvement. With

41,500 member households, the Zoo Society serves the largest membership base of any

institution in the region, including all University Circle institutions combined. The 2009

recession encouraged many families to enjoy a staycation and the Zoo proved just the

ticket for value-conscious members. Thanks to this popular program, more than 300,000

members visited as often as they liked, enjoyed spectacular summer exhibits free of charge

and took advantage of discounts available only to members.

Page 8: EVERYONE’S ZOO A Value Proposition€¦ · Zoos are important bridges between animals and people. Thanks to the work of the nation’s leading zoos, ... Scientific studies conducted

8

In keeping with our commitment to environmental stewardship, the

Zoo / Zoo Society is dedicated to encouraging staff and visitors to learn

to live more sustainably and help minimize our ecological footprint. We

recycled more than 140 tons of materials in 2009, ranging from cell phones

to phonebooks. The animals contributed to the Zoo’s recycling efforts too.

Now in its 10th year, the ZooPoo compost program is a perennial favorite

and sells out quickly each time it becomes available, raising more than

$3,000 per year.

The greening of African Elephant Crossing has become a focal point for

many facets of the Zoo / Zoo Society’s sustainability plans, from water

and energy conservation to purchasing local materials whenever possible.

African Elephant Crossing will be one of a handful of Leadership in

Energy and Environmental Design (LEED-certified) zoo animal exhibits

in the country when it opens in 2011. This important designation requires

strict green practices in building design, construction, maintenance and

operations, and further demonstrates the Zoo / Zoo Society’s role as an

industry leader.

While wildlife conservation and education are worthy endeavors in their own right,

the Zoo / Zoo Society also delivers significant economic benefits to our region. Every

dollar invested delivers a five-fold return, making the Zoo / Zoo Society a leading civic

asset and an outstanding destination in Northeast Ohio. We are proud to note that the

Zoo Society earned the top rating of four stars from Charity Navigator, in recognition

of our overall efficiency and effectiveness. Also in 2009, the Zoo received its five-year

reaccreditation from the Association of Zoos & Aquariums.

This flourishing public/private partnership is a powerful economic driver. Each year

the Zoo / Zoo Society:

Attracts 1.2 million visitors, 20% of whom come from outside the area•

Generates $85 million in economic impact to Northeast Ohio•

Claims the largest membership base in the region (41,500 households)•

Provides safe, affordable family fun and green space in the heart of Cleveland•

Delivers informal science content to schools regionally and nationally•

Thanks to generous donors, the Zoo Society funds 50% of all major Zoo capital

improvements and 20% of the Zoo / Zoo Society $21-million operating budget. Zoo

Society donors have contributed almost $40 million to Zoo operations and capital

improvements since 1998.

In September 2009, the Zoo Society was awarded a $725,000 challenge grant from

the Kresge Foundation. This prestigious national grant was made to stimulate new and

increased gifts in support of African Elephant Crossing. “This award speaks to our

broad reach in the community, the quality of our project and the excellence of our two

organizations,” said Zoo Society Board President Rob Rogers. “The Cleveland community

should be enormously proud — this is a wonderful endorsement from one of the leading

foundations in the country.”

The most ambitious project since The RainForest, African Elephant Crossing will bring

together best practices in animal management, naturalistic environments and public

education. The new 5-acre exhibit — slated to open in Spring 2011 — will transform the front

portion of the Zoo and is on track to be the first LEED-certified elephant exhibit anywhere.

As of December 31, 2009, the Zoo Society had just $1.4 million more to raise toward this

$25-million exhibit, as it continues the largest fundraising campaign in its history. More than

2,600 donors (eight times more donors than to our last campaign) have contributed $11.1

million. Gifts given until April 30, 2011 will qualify for the Kresge match.

In 2009, 70% of Zoo Society expenditures directly supported mission-critical programs, services and capital improvements. Costs per dollar raised vary by program, from 30% for membership services to just 5% for the capital campaign.

Combined, the Zoo / Zoo Society has a $21-million budget, the majority of which is dedicated to providing top-quality animal care, education programming and visitor services.

The Zoo Society’s 41,500 member households represent more than 150,000 individuals who enjoy the value and benefits that come with membership.

The Zoo Society’s capital campaign for African Elephant Crossing had raised $11.4 million by December 31, 2009. Thanks to the generosity of 2,600 donors, the campaign is within 10% of reaching the $12.5-million goal.
