Her parents Mary and William Sacrey raised Mable, her three sisters and four brothers in the small community of Pacquet. Her dad was a fisherman and woodsman by trade until he went to work at Rambler Mines. Her mom took care of the family. Mable recalls her mom carding wool and spinning it with the spinning wheel to knit socks, mittens and sweaters for the family. Their home was a bungalow with three bedrooms, a kitchen with a “daybed”, and a porch. The floors were covered with hooked mats (made from rags). These mats were regularly taken to a pond nearby to be scrubbed then hung on the porch rail to dry. Life wasn’t easy, but it was a good life. They grew their own vegetables, picked berries for jams and pies, dried and salted fish and there was also lots of wild game such as rabbits and moose. They always had plenty to eat. At the age of 14 years Mable left home to start her first job at the Twillingate Hospital. She later moved to Botwood where she met the love of her life, Gilbert (Gil) Brent. Her eyes sparkle as she recalls the first time they met and their first date. “He was so handsome”, she said with a grin. Mable and Gilbert married in August 1955. They raised their family of six, three boys and three girls, here in Botwood. She loves to tell us stories and keep us up to date on her family. There is so much pride in her voice as she talks about each one of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her love for them is unconditional. Mable moved into our home here at Lanes a few days after it opened in September 2007. This is her home and she is very comfortable here. Triffie Peyton

Triffie Pearl (Rowsell) Peyton the fourth child of Fred and Margaret Rowsell was born September 15th 1945 in Norris Arm. Triffie, her three sisters and four brothers grew up in Norris Arm where her father was a carpenter by trade and her mom was a stay at home mom. At the very early age of 13 years Triffie lost her mom to a disease called Rheumatic Fever, a life threatening disease that causes heart damage.Triffie who had started school at the age of eight, had just completed grade four, when her mom passed away. Triffie then left her schooling behind to take care of her family . This was a huge responsibility for someone so young but she did what had to be done without a second thought. Bringing water from a well, cooking, cleaning, washing clothes in a tub with a scrubbing board was now her new reality. There was little time for socializing. At the age of sixteen while attending a Friday night church service, Triffie met the man of her dreams, Hedley Peyton from Botwood. They had their first date on Easter Monday, and Triffie recalls how he would hitchhike to Norris Arm every night to see her. They were married one year later when Triffie was seventeen. One month before their wedding Hedley was diagnosed with the same disease (Rheumatic Fever) that had taken her mom. This disease left Hedley with a severe heart condition. He was a gentle man who never complained although he was seriously ill. Hedley survived four heart surgeries and lived against all odds to be sixty-six years old. When asked by a doctor why she married a man who was sick her answer was simple “because I loved him”. Although times were tough and their salary small Triffie loved her humble life. Triffie and Hedley raised three beautiful daughters and were blessed with four precious grandchildren. Her great-grandchildren Kalab and Jane are the light of Triffie’s life.I asked Triffie to recall just one happy moment in her life. She said getting her first washer at Botwood Stores for $15.00. Her husband bought it for her and paid it out in monthly instalments. That meant no more tub and washboard. Although her life was not an easy one Triffie treasured the life she had with her husband and daughters. She never gave up when times were tough and contributes her contentment to a strong faith in God and a good Christian home.Triffie has been with us at Lanes since October 31, 2018. Her energy and enthusiasm is contagious. She is so willing to help out and takes part in everything that happens here at our home.

Never regret a day in your life. Good days give happiness, bad days give experience, worst days give lessons, and best days give memories.

Angus Waterman

Angus (Bud) George Waterman made his first appearance on June 29th, 1935 to Fredrick and Gertie Waterman of Botwood. He came from a family of ten, five boys and five girls. Angus attended school here in Botwood until grade nine. When I asked him what his favourite subject was he said he had no favourites he just wanted to make it through.Angus was married for 56 years to Geraldine Peckford. They raised four children, three girls and one boy. He really enjoys time spent with his family when they visit. He loves to see his grandchildren and their little ones when they are in town.Angus got his first of many jobs pumping gas for Botwood Stores. He sold furnaces for Lloyd Wicks, delivered oil for Irving Oil and Golden Eagle, worked at a garage for BJ Elliott. Angus was the first tractor trailer driver in Newfoundland to truck oil from Grand Falls to Gander and although his truck could carry 45,000 gallons he was only permitted to carry 38,000 gallons.Angus worked as a driving instructor for Abitibi Price and worked with the RCMP Auxiliary for thirteen years. He retired from the auxiliary at the required age of 60. He also became self employed and with his own delivery truck delivered oil purchased from Golden Eagle. Angus had many years of driving experience, and he proved how good he was when he won first place at the annual Botwood Truckers Rodeo. As of Christmas 2019 Angus has been with us here at Lanes for three years. His sister Marion is also a resident here at our home. His easy going personality has captured our hearts. He’s always quick witted, has an answer for everything and is bound to give you a good laugh.
