Anderson’s Adventure to Kenya

Peder and Bonnie Anderson have been asked to help in Kenya for 2 months this summer. Their dates for flight travel are June 11 (leaving Fargo) and August 13 (leaving Nairobi, Kenya). They will be helping at an Infant Rescue Center called “Mahali pa Maisha” (Swahili for Place of Life). The directors, Dave and Jen Bell will be go-ing to the US and wanted extra helpers for while they were in the US. Bonnie visited the Bell’s and did check ups on the infants at the rescue center when she was in Kenya in 2014. The program she was with (Least of These- World Gospel Mission) partners with Mahali pa Maisha provid-ing care to vulnerable children. A huge answer to prayer is that Bonnie was able to renew her Kenya Registered Nurse license. Bonnie will be providing medical care for the infants and will care for new admissions of infants when they first arrive, to assess them and get them on a feeding schedule. There are currently 27 infants from newborn to age 2 at the center. Peder will help lead a Bible study for the male staff at Mahali pa Maisha. He will get to help with gar-dening but this time in a greenhouse (they have 3). There will be plenty of babies that will love getting attention from him too. Ways Evergreen can go alongside Peder and Bon-nie- The most important way to help is to pray! There are ladies that are sewing bibs and tag blankets. (Ask Bonnie for a pattern if you want to help). You could donate ei-ther the items or cash to purchase these 2 items that have been requested: ** Flintstone’s Complete Children’s Chewable vita-mins (only chewable, no gummies) ** Aquaphor healing ointment (either tube or jar) If you would like to help them financially please talk to Peder or Bonnie. They will be sharing a brief presentation during worship on May 12. To learn more about Mahali pa Maisha and their ministry, go to their website- http://www.mpmkenya.org/ If you would like to get email updates while Peder and Bonnie are in Kenya, please email Bonnie at [email protected]

Monthly Offering:

Ahhh, Summer. I know I probably say it every year, but it’s hard to believe summer is already upon us. It also feels like it’s about time — I don’t know about you, but I’ve been ready for winter to wrap up for quite some time now! Longing for winter has brought forth one of my favorite activities: dreaming of summer adventures! I am looking forward to some hiking and camping and long bike rides. To road trips and sunshine and warm water amidst friends and family and laughter. I love summer. That’s why this summer, I want to invite you to join me: as a church, we’re going on a road trip together! Not just any road trip, though… and not even the kind you have to sit in a car for long hours for. Instead, in the spirit of summer, we’re going to go on our own little road trip: a Sunday sermon series titled, “Summer Road Trip through the Bible.” Starting May 19, we’re going to jump into reading the Bible together by reading the first few chapters of Genesis as we talk about how we’re “Created for Community.” Then, we’ll spend the whole summer working through much of the Bible (in the order the books appear). While we won’t be able to hit every story/character, we’re going to do our best to hit the highlights, all the way to the book of Revelation (which we’ll talk about in August). Our “Summer Road Trip through the Bible” will not only be our Sunday sermon se-ries (did you see worship is staying at 10am all summer!?), but it will also be our guide for our 6pm Wednesday Bible Study, starting May 22. Want to join in the fun, even if you’re on your own road trips? We have ways for you to do that, too! Come to church on May 19 to get Road Trip Kit to take on your summer adventures with you. As a church we’ll then be collecting (and sharing!) photos and sto-ries of our own summer road trips. I can’t wait to hear how our Biblical characters come alive and keep you company, wherever you may go!

Whether your adventures lead you far away, or you never leave Rich-land/Wilkin counties: I can’t wait to see where our road trips take us. That’s why we’re starting with our first big adventure together: be sure to bring your bike to church on May 19th for our Bike Blessing, and we’ll take a ride to the park together as we kick off summer ad-ventures and look forward to all that is yet to come. Looking forward to embarking on these new adventures together, Pastor Jen

Children’s News By Becky Dockter

We are coming to the end of our season for children’s school at Evergreen! The last night of Wednesday School and meal will be May 8th. Our transition to Wednesday evenings seems to have been a success, with more of our kids being able to come on a consistent basis. It has been so fun to gather for a meal on Wednesday nights with families and church members- thank you to all who have taught lessons, organized and served the meals! I know for me, hav-ing one meal a week that is planned for us is such a blessing. We were able to use grant money to help fund the meals since January, and will be looking for ways to financially sustain this program in the future. Look for registration forms for VBS in this newsletter (page 7) and at the church. We will again be partnering with Breckenridge UMC, Bethel Luther-an, and Breckenridge Lutheran churches to put on this program. This year’s theme is ROAR: Life is Wild, God is Good! Bethel will be the host church this year. VBS dates are June 10-13, with a meal served from 4:45-5:30 and activities running from 5:30-8:00. Last year we had about 70 kids, making for lots of fun through-out the week! Suggested registration per child is $10, but we never want the cost to prohibit participa-tion. All kids age 4 thru entering 5th grade (2019-20 school year) are welcome! Registrations can be turned in to the church office.

Mission News By Jan Moore

The Back Pack Project is always in need of donations. In August 2013, the Missions

Committee embraced the idea of “One Thing” which represents the collection of one designated item each month for a worthwhile cause. Our main goal since the conception of the idea has been to collect food items that are used during the school year in the Back Pack Project. This program sends easy to fix food items home with grade school age children each Friday to supplement their diets for the week-ends when they do not receive school meals. Look for the totes in the Fellowship Hall for your donation. During the month of MAY the “ONE THING” collec-tion is:

INDIVIDUALLY PACKAGED PUDDING CUPS

Thank you to everyone who has helped with donations to the Back Pack Pro-ject. During the month of April we collected 16 jars of peanut butter; 7 boxes of macaroni and cheese; 2 boxes of Jell-o; 132 fruit cups; 36 applesauce cups; and 6 parfait cups. Items that could not be used by the Backpack Program are donated to the Richland-Wilkin Food Pantry. Thank you for your support of this ministry!! Evergreen collect donations amounting to $433.94 for The Richland-Wilkin Relay for Life (American Cancer Society). We truly are a church of action, thank you for your support in the fight against cancer. Two short mission trips were accomplished during April, under the direction of Harris Bailey, to Raymond, South Dakota, to assist in packing solar ovens. THANK YOU to all who gave of their time. Wesley Acres is promoting the days of May 11 and May 18 to clean up the grounds in prepara-tion for the upcoming camping season. If you are interested in going please give your name and phone number to the Church Office along with the date(s) you wish to go. We will coordinate to arrange car-pools.

“For it is in giving that we receive.”
