Events with the Arts Club
we make any occasion a reality.
The Story
Telok Ayer Arts Club is a multifaceted, made-in-Singapore eatery that brings homegrown art, music, food and drink
together in unexpected ways.
Owned and operated by The Supermarket Company, the first location is situated in the heart of the busy Telok Ayer neighbourhood,
at the crossroads of commerce, heritage, culture and more.
Positioned as a fresh take on Singapore’s beloved community centre, Telok Ayer Arts
Club is an all-day, all- encompassing space where all are welcomed to gather at any time of the day – a jolt of creativity that is here to
remind city dwellers to think about the driving forces behind our work, our city, and our lives
as people.
The Design
“FUUR drew inspiration from built works of the 1970s that fuse art and
architecture – specifically, Casa Gilardi by Luis Barragan (Mexico City); Walden 7 by Ricardo Bofill (Barcelona,
Spain); the ’70s conceptual art and architecture of Superstudio; and Cave
House by Fernando Higueras (Madrid, Space). With these references in mind,
FUUR devised a “70s modernism remixed” theme for the Telok Ayer
Arts Club.”
“It was a period that had a kind of optimism about the future, something which we lack now. You could be many things in the ’70s. I feel that
kind of vagueness is much less celebrated in today’s discourses.”
—Jasper Chia, Co-Founder FUUR
The Design
Designed by FUUR Associates, the design of TelokAyer Arts Club was tasked to transcend labels beyond the conventional notions of a commercial space.
A full-length window of modest proportion reveals the soul of the space,
sitting between two curved mini brutalist structures. Clad in terracotta tiles of
varying tonality, these curvaceous walls call out memories of old red brick
buildings with a modern interpretation. Cultural junkies enter the 95-square-
metre space and see a bar made of 100-year-old teak reclaimed from old village
houses in Chiang Mai – a material language that continues internally and externally (used for the park benches).

and glass infills. A sleek lighting structure runs across the bar.
Complementing the bar are customised stools upholstered with ‘Raf Simons for
Kvadrat’ fabric with playful spot colours.”
