This publication is devoted to promoting the best interests of Al Shamal Shriners inparticular and of the A.A.O.N.M.S. in general together with those of the MasonicFraternity and all Affiliated Orders.

Potentate’s MessageWhat a way to kick off 2010, a very successful ValentineDinner Auction! We extend a heart felt thank you to allthe committee members and volunteers that contributedto this success. We would also be remiss if we did notrecognize the number of you whohelped find sponsors, donors ofmerchandise and personaldonations as well as the units andclubs and their contributions. Thiswas truly a team effort and youshould all be proud of what we canachieve when we all pitch in andwork toward a common goal.

We have our Shrine Circus behindus as well, WOW. What a busy timewe have had with our two biggestfund raisers behind us. We mustagain congratulate our members, their families and the other Masonicbodies that again stepped up to theplate to make this event a huge success. Al Shamal Shrinersare the envy of many jurisdictions throughout Shrinedomwith the team efforts and results we continue to have withour many dedicated members and their families andassociates volunteering for each event. The success of eachevent is only made possible through the dedication of thoseof you who support us as you do. Again, a huge thank youfor all your time and efforts which made for the success ofthese major events for Al Shamal.

Looking forward, we invite you all to recruit some newcandidates and attend our spring ceremonial in Athabasca,Alberta 30 April 2010 through to 2 May 2010. The town ofAthabasca has the most outstanding facility we have everheld a ceremonial in and the town has been veryaccommodating and supportive of our attendance in theircommunity. Please come out and support our continuedefforts to increase our membership. Our membershipChairman, Neville Bush, has been working very hard toachieve our goal of having a second year running of anincrease of members. We are the only member of thePacific North West Shrine Association to have a positive gainfor the year 2009. Please assist us in any way you can asNeville needs all our support to make this happen for 2010.

Fraternally Yours,

sahidaRecorder’s RamblingsIt has been a busy first quarter. The Dinner Auction and Circus arenow history for another year. What can I say, Edmonton always talks

about the volunteer base we have in this city. Wellwhat support we receive from Al Shamal Nobles,Ladies and family members who make our eventssuccessful. Your time and effort are greatlyappreciated. THANK YOU.I attended the Recorder’sSeminar, a most informative session. It is great to visitwith Imperial Officers and meet Recorders fromnumerous Shrine centres. This year there were 122Recorders registered. It was hard to be humble when

team Canada won the Gold medal in hockey while we werethere. We have 129 Nobles who still have not paid their 2010 dues. Please remit your cheque as soon as possible or call if you wish to usea credit card or make arrangements. Should you require informationregarding our Shrine Centre please do not hesitate to call me.

Ian Skogstad, Recorder

Valentine Dinner AuctionCONGRATULATIONS to all those volunteers that made the auctiona success, your contribution was invaluable.

A Big Thank You to theDaughters of the Nile andthe Ladies Auxiliary fortheir assistance inselling raffletickets andregistering ourguests. Theirprofessionalismand graceadded to thehigh qualityexpected by ourguests at thisannual event. Thestaff at the EdmontonPetroleum Club was veryhelpful and considerate inensuring that we had a successful event.

This year set what I believe, was a record for auction itemcontributions. We had over 330 items in total submitted. Thisgoes to show that Shriners do pull together to “Git-R-Done”. Ittakes a lot of work to sort, distribute, display, tabulate and ofcourse collect the funds. A special thanks goes out to all thosethat helped with these activities. Denise Buhay participated in allaspects of coordinating the items with great success and kept therest of us in line. A big thank you, Denise!

This year we had 184 people in attendance for the dinner and avolunteer force of approximately 30 people to make sure ourguests were well treated and looked after. The final tally offinances has not as yet been confirmed. However, a cursoryreview indicates that our net profit for the auction will be around$60,000.00.

The only negative item to report is that 3 auction items grew legsand left the premises without paying. So if any Shriners happento find these lost items, it would be appreciated if you could guidethem home to the Temple. The items we are looking for is adonated print that left the Potentate’s office without so much asa goodbye, a signed Sydney Cosby print and a set of coppercookware that left the Petroleum Club without authorization.

On March 27th, there was an auction de-briefing and thecomments of all those who attended were welcomed and willassist us in making the necessary improvements to the 2011Auction.

Thanks again everyone, your support was very much appreciated!.

My Visit to ImperialShrine HeadquartersWhen I was down in Tampa, Florida in Januarycelebrating my mothers 80th birthday, her fivesons and one daughter got together. Our familytown is Dryden, Ontario and my father, Con Gould has been a loyalShriner of Khartum Temple for many years. Of the 5 sons, 4 areShriners, 3 belonging to Khartum and myself a member of Al Shamal. Our family keeps very active in the Masonic fraternity.

On our visit to Imperial Shrine Headquarters, I was impressed by thefountain, statue and flagstones depicting the many Shrine Temples, ajob well done. The day was beautiful and while it was Sunday and theoffices were closed, it was nice just to be there and walk the groundsand enjoy the front monument. Even though the building was closed, there was activity in the area.

The park like setting allows people to rest and let the kids burn offsome energy. Sort of like an oasis in a sea of busy traffic and concretebuildings. The area was also like a sanctuary when I noticed a vanpull up by the front drop off zone and two kids with who appeared tobe their mother. She relaxed on her cell phone while watching her kidsplay around the bushes. A couple of minutes later, another car droveup by whom I assumed was their father who helped with themovement of suitcases and toys into the car. After hugs and kisses totheir Mom, the kids drove away with the vehicles going in separatedirections. I was proud to consider that our Shrine headquarters, eventhough it is closed, still offers peace and safety to children andfamilies. I also noticed that there were piles of bags of tin foil plusbottles & cans stacked against the massive front doors, obviouslydonations dropped off. It was nice to consider that drop offs could beleft alone waiting for the staff on Monday to recover the donations.

Thank you for allowing me to share our special Shrine moment in Tampa.

Noble Terry Gould.

MembershipI ask all Nobles of Al Shamal, have you brought a new Noble into theShrine in the past three years? If so, then have you taken the time tocall him lately and inquired as to how he and his family are doing, offered to go out for coffee, let him know of some of the upcomingevents that are occurring at the Shrine Centre, and most importantlyasked him to attend a function with you?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, then you are on theright path. Please remember when a New Noble walks through ourdoors and puts on his Fez for the first time, he probably still knowsvery little about the Shrine. We cannot sit back at our respective unitmeetings over coffee or a beer and say; "Yep, I brought a New Nobleinto the Shrine this year", and then do nothing else with him.Recruitment into the Shrine is very important but it does not stopthere! You must MENTOR this new Noble!

Now ask yourself this - What is a Mentor?

A Mentor is someone who has Experience and is also a Trusted Adviser.

How to be a Good Mentor:- Commit to at least one to two years with your New Noble.- Maintain a cheerful and positive attitude with him.- Demonstrate to your New Noble that you are consistent anddependable.- Be a positive role model in both words and action.- Do less talking and more listening so you can share his thoughts.- Have fun with him as you learn together.

I want to congratulate all our Nobles for making Al Shamal Shrine theonly Temple in the Pacific Northwest Shrine Association (PNSA) tohave a positive growth for the 2009 year. This is becoming a muchmore difficult achievement and it could not have been possiblewithout ALL OUR NOBLES going the extra mile in recruitment.

KEEP THEM INFORMED THEY WILL COME OUT!

KEEP THEM HAPPY & THEY WILL STAY!

With the Help of Shriners Hospitalsfor Children, Life is a Song

When Timmy Kelly sings, his unquenchable enthusiasm for life comes through loud and clear.

Perhaps the young man can sing with such a love for life because he has already endured, and overcome, so much.

for survival from the start. Born prematurely at 26 weeks, he spent four months in intensive care

emergency heart surgery, eight operations that could not save his sight, and then, he did not begin to walk.

At that point, Timmy’s family turned to Shriners Hospitals for Children — Philadelphia. Timmy was diagnosed with cerebral palsy, and a treatment plan of surgeries and therapies began.

Today, Timmy walks and plays, just like other children. He’s received awards from the Associated Services for the Blind and Visually Impaired, and The Philadelphia Unit of Recording for the Blind and Dyslexic. Timmy is also an honor student, and he was selected as part of the “Who’s Who Among Outstanding Middle School Students in America.” But his tremendous physical progress, academic achievements and awards are only part of his story.

Timmy recently starred in his high school’s production of “Grease” as the Teen Angel.

Timmy was born with an incredible singing voice and is well on his way to becoming a

of four, and he hasn’t stopped singing since. He’s performed at hundreds of public events, including Philadelphia Eagles football games, the East-West Shrine Game, the Governor of Pennsylvania’s inauguration and even at the White House.

Timmy’s tenacious spirit and incredible voice have led to numerous television appearances, including the CBS Early Show and Access Hollywood. He performed live when he was featured on the CBS Early Show’s “Extraordinary People” segment; and when he was selected to be featured on Access Hollywood, he had the opportunity to meet celebrities and perform an impromptu duet with Beyoncé Knowles during Grammy rehearsals.

Timmy Kelly is quite an impressive young man.

If you don’t see yourUnit or Club news,

you missed the deadline!

Northern Lights Shrine ClubWell Nobles and Ladies, the club is growing a bit and work is wellunder way for the new crest design. We welcome Shriners in thedistrict from Drayton Valley, Evansburg - Entwistle, Whitecourt, Jasperand Hinton, and of course the central site of Edson. A crest design isbeing formed that will give us an important symbol that will unite usas a club and show the public who we are.

The club has also done its first BBQ fundraiser for The Brick. With allthat sunshine we had for the Olympics, The Brick store even had awide screen TV there so we could see the gold medal curling match.More fun & work is coming up with the return of the Highway Toll-gate, BBQs and not to mention the parades!

In March we were able to present to our dearest Noble René Lucas hisHonorary Life membership certificate. The first under the new name,to one of the founding Nobles of the original club. Helping childrenis first in his heart and he is proud to see members coming togetherto carry on the work together and not losing sight of the goals. Thephoto showing Club President, Brian Poltorak and High Priest &Prophet, Larry Howard with René in the center receiving the certificate.

Hope to see you all at the many functions coming up soon.BrianPoltorak, Northern Lights Shrine Club President.

P.S. Hard work & fun made for a lot of happy children at the Circus.

Legion of HonorPosthumous honour for André Juchli

On Sunday, 6 June 2010, starting at 11 00 hours, a ceremonyfor honouring our late Noble André Juchli, performed byEdmonton's naval reserve unit HMCS Nonsuch, will take placeat Pegasus Boulevard (107 Street) just north of 137 Avenue, for the purpose of renaming the street André Juchli DSM &Bar, MID Avenue. This is in Naval Centennial Park. A goodturnout of nobles, veterans and friends will be appreciated.

On the night of 12 April 1945, André prevented a disasterfrom happening to the torpedo boat which was then cruisingoff the Schelde estuary. What happened was that when hisand two other Canadian boats intercepted German E-boats ona mine-laying mission and attacked them with machine gunand 20mm gun fire at a range of just 20 metres, Petty Officerand Motor Mechanic André Juchli (pronounced Yookly) wasbelow deck when an incendiary cannon shell tore through theengine room and into the wooden bulkhead, next to a tank of23,000 litres of gasoline. With a pair of tongs, he quicklypulled the projectile out of the bulkhead, dropped it into ametal pail, carried it on deck and pitched the still burning shellinto the sea. Small wonder he was mentioned in dispatches.

This brief account of his valour fails to do justice to theactual bravery he then displayed. We certainly honour andrespect his memory and salute his ever loyal widow, HazelJuchli who still regularly attends the meetings of Al Shamal'sLegion of Honor.

Provost CorpsAll is well. We have members down south getting tanned upand ready for the next season of Ceremonials, parades, andgeneral Shrine socializing. We are looking forward to anothersuccessful season.

This will be family style dining with only230 tickets to be sold. We will have a big band with a largerepertoire of music for your listening and dancing pleasure. Also included for the families with little ones is free childcarein Biffs’ Lounge, administered by the Job's Daughters.

sahidaAl Shamal Soccer ProgramThe Al Shamal Shrine soccer program was started with Ill BobDean when he was Potentate. Bob asked Noble Gordon Harristo set up a program where Al Shamal Shrine could helpcommunity soccer teams by providing them with jerseys. Eachyear Al Shamal Shrine, through the various Masonic Lodgesand Shrine Clubs in Northern Alberta, make requests for thenames of organizations requiring soccer jerseys. The onlyrequirement is that the jerseys be presented to the team by aShriner and/or a member of the Masonic Lodge in the area.We ask that pictures be taken and if possible an article beplaced in the local paper.

We have provided 15 to 20 sets of soccer jerseys each year toteams from Central to the far Northern area of Alberta. If youknow of a community that would to participate in thisprogram, then please contact Noble Gordon Harris for the fullinformation.

In Focus . . .With the Temple PhotographerI would like to take this opportunity to thank Ill. Sir Jim Templeton forthe opportunity to be the Temple photographer for 2010. The role ofthe Temple photographer, as I see it, is to provide a photographicrecord of the Temple activities for the year. Yet such a record is of littlevalue if the Nobles and their families do not have the opportunity tosee and use the photos.

In this day of digital photography and the internet, it becomes veryeasy to share our photographic records of Temple events. Al Shamal isan extremely busy Temple and it is difficult for one person to attend allthe scheduled events so I am asking for your assistance. If you havephotos of an event that you would like to share please burn them toa CD and leave them at the Temple office where I will pick them upand be sure to include them with the rest of the photos I take.

With the idea of sharing in mind I will upload many of the photos tohttp://picasaweb.google.com/alshamalshriners. Everyone should beable to view and download any of the photos from the website so feelfree to use the photos in your Unit newsletters etc. To date, I haveuploaded photos from the Chief Rabban’s night and Potentate’s Ball,as well as the photos of our guest speakers from the January andFebruary general meetings. You will also find some photos from the2009 ceremonials, PNSA and the Edmonton Capital Ex. Parade. I willalso upload the photos to the computer that runs the slideshow in thefront entrance of the Shrine Centre, so be sure to stop and take a look.

I would like to thank you in advance for your patience andunderstanding as I wander around Temple events snapping photos torecord the year.

Fraternally, Don AndersonTemple Photographer

sahidaClown UnitOn behalf of our President, Noble Gary Semaniuk, the members of theAl Shamal Clown Association and likewise Al Shamal Clown Unitunder the leadership of President Noble Dan O’Connor, we extend aheartfelt thank you to all the Nobles who supported us andvolunteered at our Casino. The results were fantastic.

Our members are busy planning for a very active summer again thisyear by attending as many parades and special requested events astime will allow. We are looking forward to see the new clownsbecoming active members of this, the most visible and recognized unitin our Temple. We can always use more clowns so if you are interestedor just curious, talk to one of our members for the lowdown on havingfun with a serious twist to it. We leave you with this poem.

A Shrine ClownThe other day a friend of mine

I’ve known for quite a spellSaid, “May I ask you something?

I really do mean well,But this has got me troubled,”

And he asked me with a frown –“Tell me just what good do you get

Being a Shrine Clown?”The question was sincere enough,

His attitude said so,And then I thought perhaps a lot

Of people do not know –Why it is that a grown man makes up

And falls down on the ground? To make these people laugh, I say,

This part time Shrine Clown! There are a few retired men,

A manager or two,Insurance, sales, employment,

railroads and farming, too,No matter what their walk in life –

It may be up or down. These lads bring people laughter

At being a Shrine Clown. But sometimes when a Shrine Clown

Makes people laugh with gleeThe makeup that is on his face

Makes it hard to see –But emotions sometimes gather there,

A tear sometimes falls down.A child in a wheel chair laughs at

This goofie Shrine Clown,A boy with braces on his legs says,

“See the Shrine Clowns come.”A clown works hard at clowningSo someday this boy might run,

So when people ask me what I get,The answer that I’ve found

Is the Inner satisfactionOf being a Shriner Clown.

Donor RelationsDon’t outlive your money --- leavebehind a legacy. Remember the oldadage that you can’t take your moneywith you when the good Lord calls. Soif you cannot take your money with you,how then can your money outlive you?How can this be done? In myperception it is simple. If you have beenblessed with the good fortune ofacquiring more money than you will

need for your lifestyle and pleasure and you have provided foryour children and grandchildren now or in the future, thenthere is something that you can do that can perpetuate yourname and memory in your lifetime.

This great land of freedom and opportunity has given some ofus the means and opportunities by which we have been ableto provide for our families and, in many cases, the ability toacquire wealth. There is a cost to our freedom and, of course,it must be supported and be funded by taxes during ourlifetime and afterward by taxes on the remainder of ourestates.

Your memory and name can be everlasting. There are manyways that your money, in a sense, can make you immortal.Your name and your memorycan be everlasting byproper planning and adesire to extend thehelping hand toShrine Hospitals.By your generosity, you canimmortalize yourname inperpetuity; inother words, youcan reduce your taxburden and provide agift in part throughthis tax saving. Shrineprovides many differentopportunities for your giving andfor the appropriate legacy of your choice. Just imagine thejoy and pleasure you and your family can have through yourphilanthropy while you can still be here to enjoy what youhave done.

Whether you have been blessed with great fortune or not, nomatter how large or small, your gift will help the children inneed, and the appropriate recognition provided you. It is yourchoice ---- your money can outlive you.

Pipes and DrumsMembers of the Pipes and Drums had a pretty exciting circus weekend. We had the pleasure of being asked by the Circus Producer if wewould like to perform in the centre ring right after the official openingof the final show on the Sunday afternoon and entertain the audiencewith our rendition of Amazing Grace. The band members agreed to dothis and when we had finished everyone in attendance gave the banda rousing reception and send off as we marched out. We would liketo thank the Potentate and Divan for allowing us to augment our bandmembers with a few pipers from Clan Mac Naughton Pipe Band alongwith a prospective new piper who is being initiated into the shrine atour upcoming ceremonial. He happens to be the grandson of a longtime shriner and former member of the Director’s Staff.
